    +Survival Lilly That's a good-looking ax and you obviously have some experience with splitting firewood. In my teenage days, I split many cords of firewood with a hammer (8 pound head) and an iron wedge for big trunk sections of the tree, and an ax for the limb sections. You are so right about being safe - it costs much less than a hospital visit. Best wishes. Cheers.

    • @SurvivalLilly
      @SurvivalLilly  6 років тому +9

      Yeah with all that work you are doing I would get tired too. I only hurt myself when I was in a rush or sloppy. As soon as I recognize that I am getting rushed I force myself to make a pause or to pay even more attention to what I am doing. Since I am doing that I havent hurt myself anymore. I started to watch your entire cabin building series now, it is really great I like it so much!!

    Beauty, brains, brawn, and a healthy respect for the outdoors. Respectfully, wishing I could find a woman like you, Lilly. Another great video.
    I like those axes, too. The blade profile reminds me of ancient throwing axes. I'll ber checking them out.

  • @_WillCAD_
    @_WillCAD_ 6 років тому +2

    Those axes look like pretty high quality kit. Very traditional, none of the modern synthetic handle, powder-coated, odd-shaped head, tactical fighting axe features. No bow drill socket, no ferro rod notch, and thankfully, no bottle opener! Just an axe with a good steel head and hickory handle.
    You know Lilly, you do so many projects at the bug out camp, you should probably think about building yourself a workbench out there. Someplace where you can stand up to work on carving and shaping, lay out components, do product reviews, etc. It would be a nice project video itself and you'd also gain some storage area beneath the bench for supplies, gear, or firewood that could be covered with a tarp to keep the weather out.

    beautiful your field bench.
    A little idea for the next. if you leave the two front legs a bit high - the last you've put into the ground - you could make armrests by folding them with the backrest.

    Hi, Lily. I love your videos and look forward to each and every one of them. I am wondering why, however, you have such a beautiful ax and hatchet on your show, and yet you choose to cut your trees with a bow saw. Firstly, the weight of the tree is pressing down on the blade of the bow saw, making it hard to saw, and secondly, the ax could take down those saplings with only two or three well-placed chops. Hatchets are great for de-limbing as I see you are doing and you could use your bow saw to cut the saplings to length and to saw off the ends and make them more neat. Also, the ax (or the hatchet for that matter) would be useful to start a nice split at one end of the sapling and halve it using a wedge (or slim rock). Place your split halves on the two logs with the flat side up and it would be much more comfortable on the bum and back :) Great video and awesome bench tho - I love this bug out camp. Also, great tips on woodcutting safety - keep up the good work :)

    Biggest consideration in a survival situation is not getting injured or sick for fear of the number one killer back in the day, infection. So your wood splitting method with your position to cut wood with an axe is ideal to avoid injury.

    Good job on the bench, Lilly! Do you think you could make connections using mortise and tenons? I know it would be more effort, but it would last much longer than tied connections with vines and roots. Use your bow drill to bore your mortise, and carve tenons from sticks near the same diameter.
