Thank you for the awesome review. This product goes into a category of products that are just good enough. In my option there have been a string of cameras and accessories that offer less for more. I understand videography is expensive however I haven't felt valued by gear manufactures in a long time. Sorry for venting, I've been racking my brain for over 3 months looking for a new camera to upgrade to.
I think a lot of this has to do with being first. Being first is so critical these days with people looking every day for new gear. With cameras, a new announcement can be made and immediately, people ask, ok, but what is next? So, manufacturers are putting stuff out as fast as they can to be first. Gone are the days where manufacturers sat on future technology to trickle out slowly….
@@ScottBalkum Thank you for your reply. You’re absolutely right about the speed cameras are being released at. I’ve never filmed with Canon and their lineup is tricky to navigate. I ordered the c300 mark iii only to cancel the order to look at the c70 for the 20th time lol. It literally is coming down to SDI & EF mount vs no SDI / RF mount / recording media . The Komodo would match my Raven however 14 weeks to get one is steep. Sorry again for the word vomit.
Ha, no worries. There are a couple of dealers you can call that might have Komodos a little faster. It just depends. Word vomit is ok. I feel like that’s what I do in my videos, talk too much for most people’s taste… but hey, I yam what I yam.
@@ScottBalkum Thank you for the tip!! It never dawned on me to really call around. Your channel is outstanding. Thank you for listening to my issues lol
@@ScottBalkum Hey Scott! Another super informational vid! I live and work in Indonesia and I'm trying to find a Komodo that a friend can bring back to Bali from the US in the next 8 weeks but I havnt managed to find any dealers that can fit that time frame. If you know anyone that can help me out that would be amazing!!!
Hi Scott, Are you still satisfied with this monitor? I am looking forward to get something smaller than my Atomos Shinobi 7 for handheld shooting and with RED control for my Komodo. Next option would be the Smallhd Indie 5 which is price wise on a different tier. I heard that lots of Portkeys BM5 WR monitors would randomly shut down and never turn on again.
Hi, yes, I will enjoy using this monitor. It has worked fine for me. I haven’t experienced the issue you described and I can’t say that I’e heard of it before either. It is a compact monitor and plenty bright. I am currently testing the 7” model which is also nice.
@@ScottBalkum Hi Scott, Thank you for your quick reply and your honest opinion on the monitor! One more question: Does the monitor also show the deep camera settings as the Smallhd ones do?
Scott nice review! I bought this monitor for my Komodo based on your review. Can you or anyone else here explain how to use the A - B focus puller? Thanks!
Scott, thanks for the video. I assume that if I were to use the wireless control, I would still need to connect the Komodo to the monitor via SDI in order to monitor the camera image real-time?
hi there, i'm trying to use the False Color feature on the BM5WR (and not the false color on my BMPCC4K), But the color chart showing the IRE is Not showing up. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
getting close to 1 mill ssubbbbbbbb boiiiiiiiiii lets goooooo. fr fr i love your condent! Would you recommend this monitor, or the shinobi 7 in or the smallhd indie 7?
Compared to those 2, I’d probably look at the Osee G7. They are all 7” monitors. the Shinobi is going to be larger and heavier than the other 2. And the OSEE will be much brighter than the SmallHD.
Thanks for this, this could be a great solution. How would you use a battery with it? Also what's the monitor mount your are using in your outrigger handle? Thanks
You can use a standard Sony NP style battery, it just clicks into the back or use the dtap cable like I am. The monitor mount is just a simple 1/4 20 mount from smallrig, tilta, and many others. Nothing special.
Loving your channel, thanks for the great reviews! I was looking at this monitor for when my Komodo arrives, and was wondering about latency using wireless instead of sdi? All the sdi issues i read about have put me off of using that connector, and for my use, the only time I would ever use it is for the monitor. Cheers!
what about the colors are they are accurate as i had the older version and the colors are really off and its not usable, i know we are recording raw but i it dose not solve an issue with colors
There is no “best LUT”. You add a LUT to conform the image to what you are wanting. If you are looking for something close to what a TV broadcast would look like, look for a LUT from your camera brand to REC.709. Log-REC.709 but it needs to be for your specific camera. If you are using a Komodo, just change the output to REC.709 instead of REDWIDEGAMMA
I have bm5wr is that same as bm5iii -wr ? mine just says bm5wr twice unlike yours and it says max power 13w not 16w . also color :8+2 frc instead of 16.7m . I ordered on the website just last week . so its same one up now for $749. I did most recent update via usb that comes with it and it still does not connect to red komodo . I changed to all the proper ad--hoc settings said and all of that .
I have a couple of doubts about BM5WR PORTKEYS, I AM BUYING A Komodo CAMERA, only that the komodo camera only has an SDI output so my question is the following, I have a TERADEK, I will connect my TERADEK BOLT 500 to the SDI Komodo output of the TERADEK SDI output I can send the signal to the PORTKEYS BM5WR SDI input and from the PORTKEYS SDI output I can send the signal to the OEYE RED EVF to use the PORTKEYS BM5WR as a bridge or what solution can you give me to use an EVF, a TERADEK AND THE MONITOR
Thanks your review, Does the monitor has wifi connection problem? I use my iphone12pro as Komodo monitor and sometime it lost wifi connection like electromagnetic interference. Dose the PortKey has this kind of problem? thx.
I have an issue using this monitor with the komodo, the video signal goes in and out. I tried changing the sdi res output the hz and other things, new sdi cable even new batteries on the monitor and its the same thing. It works fine but after a few mins the signal starts to go in and out help!! Am I doing something wrong?
@@ScottBalkum Not sure I only have the portkeys. Today I tried it and it stayed on for about 10 mins, after that it started to go in an out like its loosing power, but if I disconnect the sdi cable the monitor stays on so its not the battery
great video!! i just paired my bmpcc 4k with the BM5WR just now,. i'm able to control it from the monitor but the monitor isn't showing what's on my camera, the screen is the default screen. do i need to connect something else via cable? i thought that the blue tooth connection will also connect the video? thanks!
Question. Do you have to pair the portkey and the komodo every time you boot up per hand ? or do it only once and then its automatic. So you can turn them both off between takes.
This monitor was a massive disappointment for anamorphic … after de squeezing and putting on frame guides (aspect ratio) the viewable screen becomes 2 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall .. it doesn’t adjust for the aspect ratio and fill out the screen, so you end up with this tiny little frame on a 5.5 inch monitor
Fantastic explanation of the Portkeys-one of the best explanations of technology I’ve seen in a while. You sold me 100%! Thanks.
Fantastic explanation of a product I’ve long been tempted by. Thanks a million for the terrific explanation of the Portkeys. Many thanks.
Great job on the review, answered a lot of my questions on functionality. Ordered one, thanks!

nice vid! I'm interested, shooting on an FX3 this seems like a handy, compact but capable piece of kit. It seems like a decent value for the money!
