- In this video I'll talk about Red Komodo and in real life use for 3 months.
In short words, the camera is incredible and produces a stellar image quality, but this camera isn't for everyone.

Good straight forward review! Appreciate your enthusiasm on how this camera worked for you!
Thank you for this review!
excited for you posting more! Would love to see c500mkii vs mini LF
Well done, thanks for sharing your experience - global shutter is very appealing, not just for light flicker but handheld, in the car, person standing at the metro and the train goes by quickly, lightning, very cool size and love the batteries on top of the ND options with drop in filters
Great video! Lots to think about here. . . .
I love my Arri Alexa classic!
It would be cool if you can make another video where you compare the Komodo with other cameras. Or even do a blind comparison!
I enjoy your channel and the information you provide. Especially because it's delivered without all of the hand-waving, wanna-be-comedian, look-at-me-I'm-cool bravado. Keep up the good work, Hugo.
Thanks
Hi there, quick question. Can you have a live fullscreen view with the app or web page and wifi connection? And how fluid and stable the stream is? I'm wondering if it could be a way to have a low-cost monitoring solution for a director while still getting acceptable quality (not like super smooth no delay, but watchable with compromises).
(btw thanks for the great review and information sharing, liked the appeased vibe without a thousand of quick cuts and beauty shots of the cam haha)
yes you can do full screen. quality is acceptable for clients monitor. I wouldn't use it to pull focus though.
Nice video Hugo. I agree, Global Shutter is so lovely to have.
It really is!
Hey friend. For first glass purchase for Komodo; what are your thoughts between getting RF 28-70 f2 vs a cine-zoom (3k budget)? Thank you!!
I'd be interested to see what you think of the Vazen anamorphics.. that's what I'm hoping to get whenever I can afford a Komodo.
That 28mm especially looks attractive
Late comer, but much appreciated - thank you! (I sub'd)
Hi, im very interested about the car mod with this camera. Do u have any preview i can watch? :)
Hey man! Great stuff. Do you always use the Canon focal reducer on Komodo or do you just use it at certain times?
only when I need a full Fram field of view or an extra stop of light. otherwise prefer not to use since it flairs easily, but if the environment is controlled, then no problem at all.
@@HugoWill Awesome, appreciate it!
Great video, so what do you think that should i buy Komodo instead of helium? as both has same image quality
well that depends what you need. Weapon has it's own advantages over the Komodo. But if you don't care about high speed, than maybe Komodo will satisfy all your needs
Are you liking the tilta cage ? I love the aesthetics
Why do you think red chose to use the older canon batteries
And why are they so pricey
yes, tilta is a very good cage for a good price. not sure why they chose older canon batteries but it's not a big of a problem..
How do you like the Red Komodo skin tones compared to your arri alexa classic ?
Love the skin tonnes. Absolutely comparable. I used to shoot a lot with Alexa and red simultaneously and there was no issue color matching them
I think zcam has a global shutter s6 now. Not sure how it stacks up though.
Yes, you’re right. Zcam carried this on. Hopefully more cameras will have it now
Very very interesting.. Thank you.
I remember a video of you where you compared the Arri classic to modern Arri mini and stated that the classic was more organic..
I totally agree, how would you compare modern Komodo to old legacy Red like Epic X or Red one Mx?
Is the Komodo sensor too modern for that organic look? That's my only concern, keep up the great work !
The thing about red is that their cameras are pretty much are data collection machines. If you shoot in raw you get all the data you need to manipulate the image and make it the way you want it. Even legacy reds are recording the same r3d files and even though you can't monitor in IPP2 on them, you can work with IPP2 on post. so let's say you've got a old epic DSMC1, you still can take advantages of the organic IPP2 pipeline. and it is absolutely possible to get the same look of Arri with a Red camera. All Arri did, is developed a look that applies on the data that collected by the sensor. But the source data is the same if you shoot in RAW on any camera. Steve Yedlin has been talking about this in his studies that changed my thinking about cameras overall.
@@HugoWill Absolutely, Steve Yedlin has an interesting view on this topic, but being a celluloid film lover, his Film vs Digital test would have been way different in richer and more complex lighting situation..
But that’s an other topic. And you’re right about Red cameras (and all Raw digital cameras) being data collection devices that you can manipulate to give it the look you want, but like film stocks, i believe that every digital sensor has its own DNA.
I can make Kodak 250d looks like Fuji with grading, but not without denaturing its original characteristics and degrading it in a way. I prefer to preserve the characteristics of a stock to keep it natural.
Anyway, i played with some Komodo R3ds and tried the legacy mode, it reminds me of the old Epic which is a great thing..
Would be interesting to see a side by side Komodo in legacy mode vs your Alexa Classic or Helium or old Red ..
Keep up the great work my friend! You’re now the owner of an impressive and powerful little camera ;)
чувак) sony fx3 или komodo?
Depends on your priorities
are you a editorial videographer?
I’m not
Hi i want know where you buying your red komodo please i want one too
Directly from red
@@HugoWill ok but why do they say they are out of stock if you managed to get one there?
@@jahpuy_art7473 they are out of stock and very on high demand. That’s why you have to reserve and wait
I placed my order 4 month before i got it
How do you compare image quality of this camera with Alexa?
honestly I can make them look identical. I probably should do a video about it
@@HugoWill Thanks, I own an Arri Alexa classic that I love, the image is outstanding but ofcourse heavy, no autofocus, no 6K...
@@sixsoxsex1 I had Alexa plus. Great camera. Strong name. Clients loving seeing it on set
@@HugoWill Did you sold it? Why?
@@sixsoxsex1 everyone wanted a mini thinking mini is way smaller and 'better" . I just decided reinvested in something that can make more money. But it's a great camera. it's just sometimes we have to buy stuff that is better for the business
it's not good, its fuckin awesome!
Sounds like you need a Canon C70...
Why?
@@HugoWill It shoots beautiful 120 fps, the AF is awesome, the codecs, the versatility, you already know Canon. It sounded like some of the short comings you talked about of the Komodo are answered in the C70. From what I've seen, many people love the image from the Komodo at first but after time get frustrated with what it "doesn't" have. JMHO.
@@scottievee7467 if I need slow motion or autofocus I have canon r5. But surprisingly I’ve been quiet alright without all that since I sold c300mk3. Very happy with Komodos even though c70 is a great camera
@@HugoWill I'm glad you're happy with it bud.
Im sorry, but in 2021 camera reviews/opinion vids with sample clips need to be in 4k. Hd is fine for consumption, but when someone wants to show the iq of a cam it needs to be 4k, or yt compression EATS IT
