That TRUCK ❤❤❤. The barn is also beautiful; just my style 😊. May I say, I am always amazed at ALL the gazillions of building codes "for our own safety", some of which definitely are good, but we have way more cheaply built, "un-crafted" houses today than ever before. Problems arise from the beginning with these houses and yet houses from over a hundred years ago, no building codes, are still standing and still in use. And if you go to Europe, houses that are 4 and 500 years old are still standing. Anyway, beautiful work as always. Love watching your creations.
That is beautiful and really cool barn. We are so glad to have been able to see it in person.
Thank you! We love the barn tour during the in person courses!
tHanks for the tour.
,All the ghosts in rickety old barns across the land must be jealous of that great post & beam!
Hey Gaius!! It's good to see your face on all these videos lately!
I don't remember you saying this thing at 8:40 (I was quite probably ADDing...), but it makes sense. I always thought that timber framing--as opposed to stud framing--eliminated worries of shear from the equation.
Give yourself and your dad and Blueberry (et al) all hugs for me. I do miss your energies, and I hope you're all well! 💙

Thank you so much for watching!!
When you mentioned rigidity, my heart and mind went to the Japanese who suffered the terrible tsunami, and the craftspeople who built the timber frame buildings that floated like boats and resisted the terrible forces of Nature. That is the quality and integrity you need to strive for when doing timber frame construction. If you can’t build on that level, then you’re still an apprentice. Best wishes in your endeavors. Take care.
Nice old Mack.
Can never go big enough.
Gaius just wanted to say that I miss you guys and miss the three courses I took with you and your family. Hope all of you are healthy and happy. Also wanted to let you know that the timber frame pool house has been a great success. My wife Simone and I are considering a new home all on one floor and Shelter will certainly be involved. Hope to see you soon Brian Petrocine Albany county NY
Thank you so much for the kind words Brian! We’re very happy to hear that the pool house has been a success, great project
What a beauty!
Thank you Brady!
Clayton, thank you for the tour of your barn showing some of the interesting features. You and your wife have designed and built one of the best barns I have seen. I have admired and appreciated many barns over the years and scan the features of each. This barn is large and functional so it is very efficient. Blessings to you.
Thank you so much for watching!
Looks like a dream - all of it
OK fess up. Why the extra brace pockets? And is it related to the gin and tonic dispenser thingy up on the top shelf? 😁
Good eyes Eric! A lot of the timber in this barn was taken from the boneyard at Shelter Design Build and had ‘typical’ joinery cut in it but was culled before use (hemlock is subject to ‘shake’ which can show up late in the cutting process), but was good enough for Gaius’ barn. He used larger braces than typical due to lack of panelized shear walls such as SIPs, which required adding mortices.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Beautiful space that you have created for working on things you enjoy! Great video, and thanks for the tour! I am just about done your online course and planning to get started with my first timber framing projects very soon. Learning about structures and joinery with the reasoning behind nontypical or unique features is very helpful for developing options and ideas for future builds! Thanks
Thank you for watching and taking our course!
Thanks for sharing. It was really neat to see your own personal projects. Amazing barn! Beautiful truck, Love that color
Thank you!!
love the intimate space and family story!
Thank you!
Really nice. Thanks for the walk through.
Of course! Thank you for watching!
Truck tour next!
Absolutely stunning
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing that.
Awesome.
Hey Gaius, just FYI: if you want to get a vehicle lift, they come up pretty often on the government surplus auction sites and quite often they're barely used. You can find all kinds of other tools there, too.
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you.
Nice looking old Mack
Excellent video guys like this are killing cable tv Yeeeee Eeeeeeeee
Are there plans available to buy for this barn? Incredibly,I have been planning to build a 38X60 barn with a wide center alley to store my father’s antique Diamond Reo truck when I retire next fall. This barn is exactly what I had envisioned.
That was very interesting! How often do you take the Mack out?! Anyone having parades must beg you!!
Embarrassingly little, we may to incorporate it on every project
@@ShelterInstitute Certainly would be welcome on our project! 🛻
You did put footings under the post? Those footings get shot in with transit why wouldn’t they be level?
Hey Jon-Gaius’ barn sits on a monolithic slab with no footings. It is 12” thick for 4’ around the perimeter and then tapers to 8” thick in the interior with (2) mats of reinforcing bar, 3” up from bottom and 2” down from top. While the firms around the perimeter were shot with a laser prior to pouring, the middle got a little off here and there during the pour!
Is that a B61 Mack
Man just go ahead knock another 8” off of each side of that beam you cut and add like a collar tie going back to the roof on each side creating a pocket . I bet you would if that was one of your customers you wouldn’t leave it like that . Just a real nice barn.
Lovely barn Gaius. But, but now I have to go rejigger a few things on my barn idea because of this. 😏
Spiral staircase??
How about one of those stairs that fold up flat against a wall when not in use?
Great ideas-Gaius has some stair commitment issues to work through!
@@ShelterInstituteCounterbalanced stairs, that pivot down from above.
A remote start for the hoist and a Barcalounger on the wood pallet. Just because it's a barn doesn't mean you shouldn't travel in style. @@ShelterInstitute
@@tray2637no doubt!
Nope A model.
Would like to see a video on just the mack.
Incoming!
