Timber Framed Barn Part 11 Cross Frames And Oak Pegs
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- Another week of timber framing. we have now done the three wall frames, both gable end cross frames and two middles frames. I have also taken delivery of pegs but due to them not being up to scratch I have had to make a tool to make them useable in the frame.
we have now run out of timber. ordered a 30ton load on the 13th of march but there has been delays in getting it so we now have to stop work. I am hoping to get it next week. I only need three days to finish all the timber we need. Then we can get back to the barn and get the framing finished.
What amazes me about you is when something goes wrong you make your own. No one can count on others to do the right thing and do it correctly. So impressed with your abilities.
Love the way you push on through when problems hit, you find the solution! We have had to do the same many times with parts or tools we have paid good money for, my son seems to be always correcting or redesigning the solution on his lathe etc. One example, he had rebuilt an engine for his classic mini, weeks of work and months of planning, fitted it in and ran it, then one of the bushings inside the gear which floats on the end of the crankshaft gave up, so out came the engine again, got the gear off, and it turned out this BRAND NEW PART had been made with the incorrect type of metal! He remade the bushing with the correct material on his lathe, fitted it, put the engine back in, and all is now fine. It seems that if you want something done right, you just have to do it all yourself! The progress is phenomenal with the guys you have working with you, we are SO excited for you and Dot and we love to see all the steps, big and small towards your wonderful goals
Those pegs? Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. As soon as I saw them my mind made a draw plate to fix them. Your jig is much better!
I follow your videos since you threw some tires into the mud for the round home and you never stopped to impress me. This barn is truly a big project and you will complete it just as sovereign. The peg thing is a test to your resilience I guess. Thanks for keeping up and good luck with whatever
Nice word usage Sir!
Thank you Sir 👍
It goes to show just how vigilant you must be when doing any project of importance, and quality. One foul up can put it all back with huge consequences to the job at hand. Those pegs seemed as if a kindergarten had, had the contract to make them. It was decent of you to not name and shame them, but that's not you Kris. The making of the tool to help correct them was of top class ingenuity and excellence. You Kris, are a man of many hidden talents and mentality of being a great thinker of resolving problems. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Top job. Can't wait for the build. 🖖👍
My dear friend I do not believe you've ever produced a video I did not like I enjoyed seeing all the skills that are displayed in your shows!
Kris Nice work and great recovery on the pegs. Brilliant.
Brilliant solution to those low-quality pegs!
The TimberRoots guys are the real deal!
Wonder where someone in Wales orders 30 tons of raw logs for milling.
It's going to be great viewing watching these gorgeous frames going up on the barn site!
Can me and my family come live with you? :) So envious of how hard working and smart you are. Not to mention such a kind hearted soul. I can't wait to see the barn raised. Hopefully your wood made it so you can mill and stay on schedule.
Chris, the round die you made to standardize the pegs was a big learning experience for me. I live in a c.1740 post and beam house in New England and appreciate every bit of the work you do (and the carpenters did 280 years ago).
What an incredible group of craftsmen. Shame about the pegs, your fix was so easy.
This is a epic build….. lots more please, it’s not everyday you get to see craftsman create 👍🍺👍
Absolutely genius to make that jig for the pegs! As you were using the draw knife I was thinking that you should create some sort of pencil-sharpener jig to speed up the process. Your idea is much simpler and just as effective!
You'll be a vampires worst nightmare in no time.
The man that sold you them pegs should have payed you triple; once for delivering garbage, twice for your time, and thrice for sharing your ingenuity with him and the world.
You’re a #1 star gentleman Kris.
HEAVY duty precision engineering with _NO_ room for error; AWESOME!
Looking fantastic Kris cannot wait to see this barn go up.
I'm so hooked on this build I had withdrawal symptoms last week when nothing came out. Thx for including the challenges cos nothing this big ever goes without moments of WT#! Hope the raw timber arrives soon and at the quality the barn deserves. Slow & Steady ... 😉
I hope and expect that the team that are assisting you with this fabulous build will get even more work from other like minded people like yourself. Their very obvious talents should be recognised. You and these craftsmen represent what many of us would like to be
Beautiful workmanship on the timbers. While I admire your quick work at making a die to thin down the pegs that were long enough and of better quality, you still have quite a bit of expensive kindling. I think that your time is valuable also. Thank you for giving a demonstration of why those pegs wouldn't do and for showing the time and energy required to solve the problem that someone else made. Best wishes for you and Dot and the timber frame crew!🕊🖖🐈⬛🫖📚🔭
Wow those pegs are absolutely diabolical you looked proper miffed while you were filming that segment, as you say if you want it done right do it yourself. I bet that company owner has nicked your idea for a die and made a set of his own for different sizes to avoid this happening in future, you should charge him a licencing fee for the privilege. On a happier note the lambs are looking happy and healthy and the barn is coming on leaps and bounds can't wait to see the assembly it's gonna be awesome well done Kris and Dot and the timber framing team.
Your mental, physical and spiritual energy never cease to amaze me! What an incredible testimony to you inventiveness, skill and determination. My life has greatly benefited from being able to share your journey. Thank you Kris.
Thanks Chris. Sorry for the poor workmanship, but honestly watching you make the tool and fix it is a testament to your amazing workmanship.
Just remember, nobody is ever completely worthless. They can always serve as a bad example. :)
Dear Ray Cronise
👍👌👏 This is exactly what I always tell people, even my daughter (always with a grin of course): At least I'm always good/useful as a bad example. 😁😁
Best regards, luck and health in particular.
@Ray Cronise - I had to laugh at the "they can serve as a bad example" but the chuckle was short lived when you remember that Bad Example got paid for that garbage with Chris's hard earned money.
Sorry about the pegs Kris. Really sucks when stuff like that happens, especially when it costs a lot of money. Glad you seem to have found the solution to fix the problem. Anyway, looking forward to the day the barn raising begins. Excited about it, lol. Also, just noticed you passed 500k subscribers. Congrats.
ask a pegleg to do the work not some @#$%^!, a pegleg knows what kind of wood he likes to feel up
Worst part of it is the time he has to spend to fix it, which is 1-2 days (including "complaining" about the quality). That time could have been spent better.
Gaining a new appreciation for timber framing! Seems like a giant 3-D puzzle, with Howard's (and your) meticulousness I'm expecting the whole thing to just fit together on-site like magic!
So much to know and skills to learn. You and the guys have it Kris.
Ingenious solution to the peg issue and a great example of solving a problem
What a beautifully done ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU ! The instructions and the photographs are brilliant. It is thorough and genuinely informative. Ryan got another winner! No one does it better!
Kris, when we in Western Australia think of a transportable building it is usually one of those tin framed fibro walled constructions brought in on one or two semi trailers and either dumped on a concrete slab or put on stumps,
Or a suitable older house that has been cut in half or more and transported to your property
But watching your transportable barn beiňg crafted by Craftsman
Working together as a team is glorious to see, the huge amount of work in sawing up the logs as you did and other prep work while doing daily chores on your property, then assisting the guys in carpentry, your should be extremely proud of your accomplishment to date.
Also the framers have shown the standard of work they produce, OB CAMERA, that alone speaks volumes for there reputation,
The peg maker hmm I wonder if that precious little 🦄 would do the same thing and let his workmanship show to the world at large.?
So impressed Kris, I have been watching you for years now and your skills never cease to amaze me, (even when you injure yourself and soldier on)
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Beautiful words Tony.
Hope you’re doing well!
Richard from Boston, USA
@@Richie8a8y hi Richard it isn't hard to praise a Craftsman especially when he has shown us so much, shared his tips and tricks and craft freely, Kris shows determination that many your people have not forgotten but don't even want to learn as life rarely exists outside of the smart phone anymore
I am 63 my health won't let me build but when I was able I had my 1/2 acre block under Permaculture, with chooks, bantams, geese, duck's, rabbits pigeons, Guinea pigs, silver perch (fish in my home built spa) and veggies of many types, fruit trees, most has fallen by the wayside now been tolerating recurring cancer since 2007 and radiotherapy it takes it out of you big time, I am getting the urge to get back into veggies again and am going to set up a fairly big raised garden bed in the next month or 2 (just on winter here we don't get snow) but this is about Kris (and Dot) he never fails to try to do his absolute best and that to me is so inspiring, and to see a project develop I think I am almost excited for him more than he is,
Let's hope we can watch his creativeness continue to develop for years to come.

Really enjoying your superbly put together video posts. I envy your skills and if I were a younger man I'd be out there with you living off the grid .
Well done my man 💪.
This is going to be a beautiful barn. Shame about the setbacks with the pegs! Great work Kris
ask a pegleg to do the work not some @#$%^!, a pegleg knows what kind of wood he likes to feel up
you hardly ever see such a beautiful piece of work anymore ---this is going to be the most beautiful barn in england for a long time ---great work!
never would have thought it was that "easy" to make the pegs with a die... Great Job Kris, congrats on 500k subs. really stoked about this build, can't wait for the next video.
Awesome Kris. I especially enjoyed your fix for the pegs, sorry to see you got stuck with crap, but that is business today.
You certainly experienced a contrast of workmanship. Howard and his team at one end of the scale, the guys that made the pegs off the scale at the other end.
He's a very clever chap
Really enjoying these long, framing videos mate. Right up my alley! But I can't believe a so called reputable company could get those pegs so wrong. Such a simple and straightforward job. Even a first day apprentice should get a peg right! Like you say: if you want a job done right - do it yourself. Good luck mate!
Yeah ... "wrong" is a nicer word than they deserve. "Wrong" is when you make a mistake, say make them the wrong diameter. These are just plain badly made. Incompetently and/or indifferently made. By people who just didn't care.
I think iv said it before , but these guys and the work must be costing a fortune .. still it’s a pleasure watching them work and you are getting what you want and dream of , that makes it worth every penny . Can’t wait to see it all going up together on site . You are such a determined man .. I love watching your channel 👍
Well done Chris with the peg sizing tool ,so frustrating when you pay good money for a product and it arrives incorrect and some of the pegs no better than kindling ,.Looking forward to the rest of the build .
Nice to see so much craftsmanship working on that beautiful building.
Utterly excellent work, and also a fabulous insight in to how a gang of craftsmen would have constructed a significant size building all those years ago, and of which probably quite a few are still standing.
As will yours - I have no doubt that it's looking at easily 600yrs + !!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you got a VERY decent, (like 100%) discount from that dowel/peg supplier.
I would have been livid, especially if it had held up construction.
You are an inspiration to us Kris - well done again.
Regards Mark in the UK
So nice to watch this, just got home at 3:30 am from closin the bar. Thank you Chris.
Hey Kris, been watching your channel from day one. Totally understand how you feel about poor workmanship. Remember you have good lads helping you with that frame, I can't wait to see the completed structure.
I am amazed at your calm in the brewing storm - NO RAW
MATERIAL. And then you have crank up the team again and get this team going in symphony. I’ve worked in management almost my whole life and I feel your pain.
Always look forward to your Awesome Vids Kriss.
Keep you n yours safe.
Be here waiting ✋️ ❤️ Mate 🇬🇧🇺🇲
At least you’ll have plenty of wooden stakes if Dracula or his brides come calling 😂😂
What a massive undertaking! been loving the footage!!
We have some unique treehouse to refurb and rebuild on the Edge of the Black Mountains at The Goytree. Thanks for the inspiration. Banging.
Realy nice to see young people keeping old skill and traditions alive fantastic to watch 👍👍
Your tolerance of the peg supplier is something i admire. I don't think I could be as forgiving. There is nothing acceptable about what they did, deliberately trying to mislead with a good sample, then sending rubbish through. They could jeopardise the fantastic quality of your build and they simply dont care. I'd love to know who and where they are. I would have named and shamed them, they don't deserve the generosity you have shown them, you're an inspiration to us all.
In my opinion generosity is not about who deserve it .
And when one respects one becomes respectful person when one shames one becomes a shameful person . The other that was not honest. They will not feel any shame , so not worth it .
You would think that 13 YO Chinese political prisoners would be better craftsman,er, craft-person than that
@@sandratestolinilembo3915 So very true.
@@sandratestolinilembo3915 your comment has zero logic...more like the attitude of a sheep.
The Peg company should be asking you to make them some tooling for them to produce consistent products absolutely stunning craftsmanship that barn will be I am extremely jealous
Hard to believe it was a company. Hobbyist at best
I was soo looking forward to seeing the new video on this build.
The quality of Kris's design and prep, the superbe quality of the timber framing - watching those big beams come together in complex joints with millimetre precision, and then ... Those pegs. I think Kris was very controlled to camera though the frustration was clear. A tribute to you Kris that you kept it together and as always took it forward. Im constantly Impressed by what you do!
Hey Kris, you don't know the anticipation of these Video's... This project is so cool.
Nice save on the pegs. I do hope you got more than half of your money back.
Nice job on the peg die. Not all of us have the machines to make one of them.
Maybe make another one to send to the business what sold you those pegs. Help them improve their product.
👍👌👏 2) Sooo great that you are able to saw your own construction wood/timber. Especially important nowadays! Congrats. 3) Until now I didn't realise how much precision work has to go into high quality timber framing for a building. So: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all involved life forms humans (animals and plants).
Chalk and cheese really, the quality of craftsmanship by the whole team offset by a peg supplier with no quality control and pride of product, I admire you Kris because you remained professional even though you probably wanted to scream from the nearest hill top. This barn frame is looking so very good and will look the same when all completed and on your land. Great job👍😎
Goodness me, felt like I got proper name-checked in that vid!
Best to you,
Steve.
This is going to look fantastic when it's finished.
2:30 Kris, PLEASE wear a dust mask.
I lost a good friend & fellow woodworker to pneumoconiosis directly caused by inhaling fine wood particles & another ended up with nasal cancer.
Nice job on your die for cutting pegs. When needed, you'll be able to count on that tool for the rest of your life. 👍
This is nothing short of perfection personified. In every aspect it demonstrates what thoughtful planning, problem solving and skills in handling tools can achieve that all combines here to create a massive monument in wood that will for generations last well beyond the lives of those craftsmen that built it. As each stage is met, you can hear the cries of joy by those involved when it all comes together.
looks so good. that peg situation is a travesty
You got me on the dodgy pegs, Kris. My immediate thought was, 'why doesn't he turn them an a wood lathe?' Your solution was brilliant and solved the problem in a fraction of the time of my idea. To myself. "Go back to bed, Ron and leave it to someone who knows what he is doing." Great stuff.
Makes you wonder the condition and state of thier timber frames probably tell thier customer's that the splits add character to the frame. You can't fit a square peg to a round hole. Brilliant, really enjoyable site, thanks Mick.
A fascinating process. The pegs aside, the carpentry has been top notch.
Hehe 'top notch', pun intended?
@@SteveYoules Haha. Not at all. I hadn't even thought of it.
Great to see you and the skilled craftsmen doing good job in the barn for the barn. Interesting!
What a great journey this is, setbacks are just part of it. Your solution to the setback is one I will keep in mind to, don’t trust other people easily with your own high standards. It’s going to be such an amazing barn. So cool you make all the videos about it, looking forward to the next one!
Patience is rewarded Kris but it’s more rewarding to be able to do the job yourself, kudos on your tolerance.
cant wait to watch it go up, how exciting for you and for us to watch!!
If this barn and your other builds is anything to go by your eventual next house is going to be immense.
Nice work Kris shame about the pegs but you came up with a great solution good job. ❤
On the bright side Kris, you are now all tooled up to start that Vampire slaying side gig.
I always wonder what people like the one that sold you the peg think. would they buy their own stuff? frustrating
The peg sellers strike again.
The mind-boggling thing* is they obviously had to put in the work to make them, so why not also put in some effort to make them properly? Costs next to nothing extra to make such a simple item better.
@@Memphisko People like that don't care about their work at all. Only do the bare minimum to not get fired.
If it was a company that’s trying to grow, it’s possible the samples were done by the owner, and the shipped pegs done by apprentices, without proper oversight or review by the owner. I’ve been that owner before and learned a valuable lesson from it…hopefully they do too. When your reputation is on the line you make damn sure what’s being done by others meets your standards. It’s hard to un-pay someone for a poor job already completed…so you pay for it in money and reputation. 😬
@@davidprins9401 Well said.
Only made that mistake once, it still haunts me 30years later.
Finding a floor manager/foreman/chargehand/chief whatever that really cares is a wonderful thing.
If you’re trying to grow a business and you’re lucky enough to find the right one, cherish and reward them as family or better because they’re worth their weight, possibly more.
Hello from America
I've been watching your videos for some time now and I'm waiting for more on your barn build
I find it very interesting in your work
Keep up the good work
Waiting for more on the barn
Thanks again
Just about to watch, fingers crossed we get to see some baby 🐑🐑 too ! 😂👍
Love it Kris well done mate
Starting to feel the excitement brewing there from here on the other side of the world down here in NZ as you inch your way closer to barn aising day. I hear you on doing the job yourself ie pegs. Keep focusing on the end goal and what it'll feel like having all that shelter and undercover space. Cheers Mike 🇳🇿
I love watching you work with this skilled and experienced crew of woodworkers who are dedicated, positive, creative, ethical and smart LIKE YOU! How awesome to work together with such a team - you always find solutions, and are happy all the while. You always want to learn and grow, either alone or from experts. Can't wait to see your finished barn!
I always look forward to your videos and am never disappointed.
Thanks for the video.
Nice work and very funny see you all making the item. Best Regards.
The ambition with this is amazing. Its like a Cathedral.
This portion of the project is moving along well hopefully you get the logo that you need so you can start back on the Mill work. Thank you for sharing
Jesus. Your channel is just so satisfying. Thanks, man.
It’s a good thing that company doesn’t make wooden legs,we would be walking backwards..Great videos 😊
He build is moving along well!
Kris, if you had made a close-up video - with no sound - of you driving 600 of those pegs through the die you made...I would have happily watched it ❤
Thanks for posting and sharing. Glad to see you were able to adjust the pegs so that they weren’t a complete loss.
It's a lovely frame Kris.. gonna be a awesome barn..By the way.. you need to buy that old camper and do it up..
Realy like the tool you made for getting the pegs at the right size. As simple as it is effective. Great job!
I'm new to the channel. I'm researching timber framing. I have always loved old barns. This channel is a real encouragement! I've watched a few episodes, and I am learning a lot!
I'm so emotionally invested in this Kris. God only knows how you must be feeling....😅
That little tool you made is genius! I was so impressed when that first peg went through. Top class!
Fantastic video already my favourite series. I would have wanted all my money back. Someone else is going to have a shoddy job done if they are not named. Keep up the fantastic work. John Scotland 🏴
A good thing to come out of the crappy pegs is the die you made. That will come in handy many times in the future, I'm sure :^) There's always something earned from every mistake, even the mistakes of others. I make a lot of different stuff myself and am constantly learning-very often by my stupid mistakes :^) It's frustrating, but it pays in dividends later on :^)
Great work by you and the timber framers! And the sheep and lambs :^)
So true what you say, if you want it done right, do it yourself. But sometimes , you can't do it all. Great solution to make the retooling of the pegs a bit easier. The barn framing is looking beautiful and sturdy .
I really enjoy your videos!!
I can't believe how much work is envoled in making this barn!! Great work and unbelievable designing this project.
Looking forward to the " THE GREAT ASSEMBLY.
Let’s hope the quality checking will improve with company who made the pegs, although they seem to have known what they were doing, if the sample pack is anything to go by, so somethings isn’t quite right there.
Thank goodness you are so inventive and overcame that hurdle.
Things are certainly moving along, won’t be long now 🌈
This is a really interesting build and its easy to see why you elected to enlist professionals to help you. I have no doubt you could have done it all by yourself but given the man hours and other factors, the cost versus time versus wear and tear on your body ratios I think its a very sensible decision whatever the cost. Good job.
Fantastic job looks like it will last forever and quite a beauty ! Smashing job !
Dot needs to get a camera to capture all the stuff going on at home while you're out putting together the barn. I would love some lambing and/or some gardening videos!
