    Blood hunter is pretty cool in my opinion, it’s just lacking because Matt was too afraid of Matt making it OP.
    The thing with Molly is that he didn’t know about how he got his powers because of amnesia and his subclass (ghost slayer) was the champion fighter or hunter ranger, just making him more of a blood hunter. The lycan is the best werewolf transformation in d&d, surpassing beast barbarian in how much it delivers in the werewolf fantasy. The profane soul is the first 1/3 warlock to match eldritch knight and arcane trickster, also allowing anyone who gets to that level to use eldritch blast and other warlock stuff with INT or WIS, enabling SO MANY cool multiclasses. And the mutagen allows you to go beyond 20 in any stat if you accept the drawback.
    As for why it’s not a fighter subclass, why isn’t the ranger? The ranger is similar to blood hunter as it could be a fighter subclass but isn’t because it’s identity as being connected to nature is too integral to be a subclass, and there’s so many ways to do a ranger and so many different facets on nature you can tie to. A blood hunter is different from a fighter as it bargains and sacrifices for power, and they are transformed by the monstrous source they take power from, which defines their subclasses. While it may sound similar to warlocks who make a bargain, blood hunters differ from warlocks in the way they GET their power and what it means for them. Warlocks are given their power by their patron and when they cast their patrons magic is channeled through them. Blood hunters sacrifice their vitality to create a different kind of magic and integrate their monstrous power as a part of their very being. And so their bargain and sacrifice is thus as important to the blood hunter as rage to a barbarian, divinity to a paladin, nature to a ranger, and martial arts for the monk, because under your thoughts all of those classes could be fighter subclasses. And maybe they could be but, they ALL do better as classes.
    Also blood magic is cool,
    TLDR: the theme behind the blood hunter is becoming one with monstrous energy and sacrificing vitality for power, and this concept is as makes them different from fighters as much as nature makes ranger different from a fighter

      It was kinda BS tho. Look back at that fight and rewatch it. They were like 3 people going up against like 5-6 people of equal level. Half of their team was gone. it was a fight that never should have happened. They even had the element of surprise and only managed to barely kill 1.

      @1Hexxer 11 місяців тому +11

      @@Tsuusetsuwhy shouldn't it have happened? It was long time ago so i don't remember the details all that well but didn't they literally capture their party members or something? Should the rest of the party just sit on their ass or what.
      They had more people so more action economy and finally their boss was a frickin Oni or something, which is not bs it's world building to show that not everything plays at your level.
      Also suprise is not actually that great of a tool, like it can help but unless you can actually drop enemies during the suprise round it does not really decide anything.
      Then take also into account that the Bloodhunter class was and arguably still is very weak class whose main mechanics include doing damage to yourself for very small benefits.

      What makes the blood hunter different than the fighter is about making sacrifices. Most obviously is your health for abilities by way of blood magic, but the less hidden and more important is sacrificing humanity to become something else, and that something else determines your subclass. Making a deal with a patron, becoming a lycanthrope, experimenting on yourself with alchemy. It honestly has a lot of potential the only problem is that it’s abilities are lacking and restricted because Matt Mercer was too afraid of making the blood hunter op. Also order of the lycan is hands down the best class and subclass combo to be a werewolf in d&d, showing the blood hunters potential.

It generally works better for DEX builds since fewer "features" are shut off, relying on your damage bonuses to help you somewhat keep up with other builds. The MADness in general also hurts when it comes to feeling like you have enough versatility to justify your lack of full specialization.

    For my campaign I had a player who was a dragon born barbarian. She was turned into a werewolf after an encounter she was supposed to die from (this was the first in a long line of "how did you live?" Events). She became a lycan blood hunter as it fit better with the situation. That character being a blood hunter was honestly one of the coolest parts of the campaign as the transition was so natural. And while she kept barbarian habits she also leaned heavy into keeping the beast contained, and even completely changed her alignment, it made for a really cool character who sadly died at the end of the campaign.

  • @JonathanYeets

    I feel like bloodhunters are more of a character driven class. It was made by a story teller for story heavy games. They work great in combat too, but a lot of their allure comes from the stories that can be told through their Order.
    I had a character who's whole reason for being in the campaign was that his Order (lycan) sent him there (the in-game name was The Order of The Blue Moon)
    The only reason he was in The Order was because he and his were ambushed by a pack of magically rabid werewolves while on the road. He ran off to protect his childhood best friend/lover/detail, because no one had figured out how to cure someone cursed in such a way. Two years later, The Order of The Blue Moon arrives and begins to help the rabid werewolves, him included. Him, scared to return home, stayed with The Order.
    He turned wolf 7 times during that campaign. It was his last resort. He did it only when it was absolutely necessary and had as few of his party members present just in case he couldn't control it. (He could, but character continuity is important.)
    He was reunited with his lover by the end of it. He fully broke down into tears, which was completely unheard-of for him. He was very quickly deemed "The responsible and well adjusted party member" which he wasn't well adjusted at all. He was terrified of himself and what he could do to people. The immediate acceptance and love was just too much and he just broke down into his lover's lap. I have a core memory of his lover petting him and chuckling as he said "Yep. As dramatic as always." With the rest of the party being absolute hooligans in the background.
    So yeah...TLDR; Blood hunters are super character driven not class driven.😅

    I’ve played a few and while I whole heartedly agree the class is so bare bones it could just’ve been a subclass of the fighter or ranger, it might be my favorite thing Matt has contributed to D&D because I do love the niche it provides. It’s a ranger but instead of woodland beasts and cute fairies you hunt the seriously disturbing beasts things most people would say “Don’t bother” to.
    You can essentially fulfill the same niche with some flavor and feats. But the fact that it was essentially a Intelligence based ranger made it really cool.

    I have played as a bloodhunter from level 1 to now level 13 (still ongoing), lemme rate the features;
    Blood Curses: 1/10
    I either use all of my uses in 1 fight, or i go 6 sessions without using them. I feel like they should be a little more in the middle.
    Crimson Rite: 8/10
    They feel a little weak at first, and I picked Ghostslayer so that just gives me the only rite ill ever use, but I feel like if they all had some little ability tacked onto them it would be more of a choice to use. Overall I like the idea behind them. I love the recent change where they no longer go out if you sheathe your weapon.
    Brand of Castigation: 2/10
    Awesome name, terrible ability. I think if they wanted to make this better, instead of dealing your hemocraft modifier, it should do a die roll of your hemocraft instead, or possibly the hemocraft die + modifier. I do like how it lasts forever though.
    Grim Psychometry: 6/10
    Another amazing ability, but EXTREMELY dependent on having a good DM. If you have an inexperienced DM, this ability does nothing. Thankfully, i have a fairly generous DM.
    Dark Augmentation: 3/10
    While very useful, this is just weaker versions of other classes abilities that they got earlier. The save bonuses is Aura of Protection, but only for yourself and only physical saves, and the speed boost is a whopping 5 extra feet. Incredible. Thankfully, it does actually stack with Aura of protection.
    Brand of Tethering: 3/10
    Havent gotten to use this yet, but it seems like a good upgrade to a bad ability. Also, being able to prevent teleportation without magic sound great.
    Rite of Dawn: 7/10
    The only reason I have rated this lower than regular crimson rites is that it is the only one that gets special addons, thus making it the only one I ever use.
    Aether Walk: 15/10
    I fucking love walking through walls, there is nothing else in this class that compares to it.
    Brand of Sundering: 7/10
    This actually makes the brand useful. Good job.

    Ive tried really hard to like blood hunter, even look at the republish Matt Mercer did for DMguild (which is way easier to digest).
    Ive tried playing blood hunter, and looking at people play it, and it took me a bit to understand the class.
    I think one of the problems with Blood Hunter is that it immediately has too many options to pick from between levels 1-2.
    Like you have to decide through many mechanically complex curses, each with an enhancement bonus, its a lot to digest.
    I think damaging yourself to gain a cool lingering bonus like extra damage on weapon attacks is cool, but the maledict system makes it a hard entry into the class for me.
    That said, I do feel Blood hunter has like one or two features that is enough to warrent being a class, like Matt's thing for immense flavor in homebrew works perfect here to make Blood Hunter distinct, but a lot of that shine is muddled by some mechanical complexity.

The greatest benefit of Blood Hunter being its own class is that it gave us rules and mechanics for players to be werewolves, but since then, there have been feats made by people like Pointy Hat who have vastly improved on the idea by making it accessible to everyone rather than making it the entire identity of a whole subclass.

    Played a BH from level 2 to 8. It was the warlock-flavored 1/3 caster subclass, and it really highlighted the fact that warlocks and 1/3 casters overlap in a BAD way. Despite being the face tank of the party I was constantly getting knocked unconscious because I was shackled to medium armor, but I had also built into high damage with a greatsword which painted a target on my back from the DMs perspective. If I play another BH I'll probably do a mutant archer build, since that subclass seems really unique and doubles down on the theme of sacrificing one resource to gain another in a cool way

    Fighter needs more interesting subclasses so I’d agree with your idea. I wanted to like the Profane Soul but it gets less spellcasting than a warlock while offering a similar play style. And the ghost hunter just sounds like a couple home brewed eldritch invocations slapped together. The mutant and Lycan subclasses are the only two really worth playing

Then later as I learned that subclasses existed (I picked bladesinger) I just assumed Blood Hunter was a Bard subclass

    im currently playing a blood hunter for the first time because it was finally updated to not be quite as terrible. Sure you still hurt yourself, but now your weapons dont stop being juiced up until you take a short/long rest AND it just hurts you instead of reducing your max hp. It is MUCH better, even though the class itself is a little confused still.
    Im playing an order of the mutant for reference and am at level 5 so far. Its basically just a fighter with some fun very limited little extra bits though

    Honestly, I have made two for hunters ever, one based on the Warlock subclass which we modified so it felt a little more calmer and obviously the lycan one. I think those two are the most interesting sub classes it has, the other two are interesting, but they don’t shine.
    The class really wants to be an edgy alternative to the paladin I feel, but the entire energy of the class mostly swallows the energy of the add-ons. I have had the most fun with it however, looking at an archetype I have for a character that I like, that may have been based on like an old forum character or something I had when I was younger, but I can’t make it work with any other class. So I take my concept and did that. Which is funny, because none of my characters really lean into that hard-core edge, the bloodhunters tend to evoke from its players..

    You know what blood hunter feels more like, now that I’m musing on it? It feels like a prestige class from ye olde 3.5 days. I think it could be seen as reasonably taking parts from fighter, ranger, warlock and cleric, so I could see it being more effective as something that’s layered on top of those classes in some form of combination.

    Question regarding class vs subclass: If you have a good idea for a class/subclass, how do you know if your idea has enough character in itself in order to be a class by itself, or whether it should be a subclass?

    • @octavianpedigree5866
      @octavianpedigree5866 Рік тому +2

      I find it mainly depends on two factors.
      1) Theming. If the theme is very direct it might serve well as a subclass. For example, a knife thrower would work better as a subclass for fighter or rogue then a whole class.
      A broader theme the has multiple facets is where you start to look at a whole class, or sometimes a modular subclass like Beast Totem Barbarian. For example, you could do an Elementalist as subclass for wizard or sorcerer, which sub-options for each element, or you could make it it's own class, with subclasses revolving around each element.
      2) Mechanics. If the mechanics you think of aren't going to strongly differentiate you homebrew from an existing options, just tweak the existing option to fit what's desired. It's unprecedented, but making a subclass that removes or changes base class features is an option.
      Using the previous Elementalist as an example, whether or not you make a whole new class or not depends on what you want it to do. If you want it to cast spells, using druid, sorcerer, or wizard as a base is probably a good start. If you want a more physical class, think Last Airbender, you're starting to wade into more unique territory.
      PS. I know Elements Monk exists, but it's also bad so I ignored it.

    To be fair, the most likely reason you remember everyone else's subclasses is because 1) the version of Blood Hunter Molly used was a clunkier and less mechanically sound version of the class, and 2) the rest of the party leaned into the flavor of the class and their backstories highlighted exactly what they were on multiple occasions. Molly didn't ACT like a blood hunter, he very much went against type playing a hedonistic amnesiac circus performer, not a monster huntering badass.
    Plus Molly died well before we ever got into his personal arc where him being a blood hunter would actually be important.

  • @wolfflamekindl9339
    @wolfflamekindl9339 11 місяців тому

    (Before i start, lemme say that Bloodhunter is one of my favorite classes, and I often use it to invoke an Ursine Witcher or Ulfhednar style character)
    The Bloodhunter is, and always has been, a melee ranger with extra steps, but also wanted the edginess and debuffing cability of warlock, when in all reality, it would have been better to just play an oathbreaker paladin or hexblade warlock.
    People only like it because it's edgy and cringey... oh, and you can get an elemental weapon without access to Flametongue/Caladbolg/Frostbrand, so there's that.
    In terms of mechanics, it builds upon what the ranger does (but in all the wrong ways) by giving you the ability to change your damage to take advantage of various resistances and vulnerabilities, but it often doesnt deal enough damage to be worthwhile, and on top of that, how are you supposed to know what damage types work best without metagaming?
    Other features such as blood curses are meant to invoke a class that focuses on debuffs and striking against vulnerabilities... but isnt that what a warlock or wizard does?
    So yeah. A bloodhunter is basically the ranger if it tried to be more like the warlock, paladin, and wizard instead of being like the fighter, rogue and druid.

    I've tried so hard to get into DND but every game is a mess. So I have little experience. Finally got to have another game, and chose Blood Hunter because it seemed like warlock without the need for a sponsor. I based my race, background, everything on supporting the class with my asking the GM for approval every step of the way. They were enthusiastic until apparently they finished writing their world and my choices clash with their vision. Very draining and a big mood killer. If they had told me these rules from the beginning, sure. But we already had our first session and now the GM wants to shake my whole character up.
