This was the blood hunter subclass I wanted to play first, but the limited spellcasting and lack of power compared to the Hexblade or genie lock made me drift towards the Lycan bloodhunter. The lack of envocations means your eldritch blast will be a fraction of the power of the warlock. The actual blood abilities are fun ways to change up your fighting style. Maybe if the profane soul could have multiple patrons, meaning you can pick abilities based on what you want rather than sticking to a single patron, your character would feel more like a Constantine or Harry Dresden. I think envocations are a must if you’re going to make something like a warlock. At least if you could a patron ability whenever you leveled up and didn’t have to stick with a single patron, while getting envocations, it would make up for lack of total spell slots. Even dipping into this subclass for eldritch blast isn’t worth it because you could just ask your dm to homebrew an Int or Wis based warlock for your character idea instead.
I just had an idea to rework the Profane Soul a bit. It's pretty rough but tell me what y'all think. So instead of choosing a Patron like a Warlock, you choose a plane of existence to draw power from. The Upper Planes, the Nine Hells, the Elemental Planes and the Feywild for example. This order chooses to undergo a ritual which tethers their soul to one of these planes, profaning it in some way but now able to draw power from those planes. Each plane has a unique handful of spells attached to it. You get a number of charges equal to your hemocraft die that recharge on a long rest and you can use these chargers to cast any spell from the unique list you picked equal to half your character level rounded down. This would not only give you more spells to work with but I imagine these unique spells would involve a lot of saving throws specifically to synergize with the Brand of the Sapping Scar (which would be tweaked to include all magic and not just your own). This would completely replace the Warlock spellcasting, giving the class something more unique to stand apart from the Warlocks.
The pitfalls are mostly why im redesigning the subclass to be closer to the Eldritch Knight with a required amount of blood magic spells (Using Deep Magic, a supplement from Kobold Press that adds 750 spells to 5e, including about 25 blood magic specific spells)
That is EXACTLY the character I'm building. The background I'm building for the character is a vampire hunter who is captured in battle, forcefully undergoes a vampiric transformation but it is interrupted by his guild (hence dhampir vs full vampire). Knowing he has become what he hunted he self banishes and seeks revenge on those who corrupted him.
So i am playing one from level 3 up to 6 now and i am really powerfull in the party and have many new things to add, even though we have a cleric ,paladin and rogue in the party. The DM assumed the crimson rite is only once per turn but nope. In long battles lots of extra damage with no extra ,slot or whatever spent, i choose ranged weapon fightingstyle so extra +2 gives a pretty high to hit overal. You get blood curses aaand magic, if you make sure your str or dex is good enough and pick high con, so u will be durable, than just pick utility spells that recuire no dc or to hit, like:mage hand, prestidigitation(very flavourfull and combined with a good speach good for intimidation), unseenservant, comprehand languages, expiditious retreat, and you have lots of other options to play around with. And if you actually get to track down feys, fiends and undead it feels really cool. I played all the classes exept maybe 2, but this is the coolest most flavourfull class by a longshot and you know your backstory about how you became a bloodhunter and got your pact will be awsome.
I dont know if you will see this but I would love to see you do the Horizon Walker Ranger subclass in one of these. You explain things well and I've always been curious yet confused about that class.

I ended up combining my level 8 rogue arcane trickster with three levels of BH Profane Soul for a level 11 character. Having an additional spell slot via my pact is honestly pretty nice. Plus given the bonus damage I can do with sneak attack and blood maledict make for a great combo especially when adding Hex into the mix. I'm shooting for potentially a 13 Rogue + 7 Blood Hunter combo so I can get the extra spell slots and attacks with the brand of castigation to really dish out damage.

Hey, quick question. Has anyone been having trouble watching the "You might be a Ghostslayer" blood hunter video, because whenever I try to click on it to watch, it says that the video is age restricted. I'm not sure if that's a thing for anybody else.
UA-cam age restricted. I tried to ask why but they didnt respond. I assume it was because I used a mortal kombat clip? But they didnt give me a reason.
Maybe, maybe not? Whatever the case is or was, I liked that video. As the Ghostslayer blood hunter has to be my personal favorite DnD subclass. And it hurts to see a man with such high charisma get age restricted in one of his videos.
There's just really not a good reason for this subclass narratively or mechanically that can't be filled out by a different subclass. It doesn't substantially stand out from even other bloodhunters or the warlocks it's ripping off. I feel it would have been better to create a focused eldritch blood hunter, which at least would be able to offer something that other Bloodhunters can't with their default spread of tracking fae, fiends, and undead. Specialized in using the powers of the deep ocean and deep space to hunt the servants of Old Ones and Mindflayers. Maybe have something about tentacles as living whips.

The spell slots rely knee cap it through and it doesn't compare to the other subclasses for example at ghost slayer at leval 17 with the polearm master feat dose 14 d10 damage plus 1d4 plus 15 coming out to an average of 102 damage to undead or enough to kill a vampire in two turns

What about making each level of gaining a patron related class feature a choice between all of the patrons and you can pick previous tiers options as well. So thematically, you steadily sell a little more to the patrons and barter more harshly than a warlock who is tied to one greater patron for a bonus and slew of magic and blood powers rather than chunks of magic power in the form of invocations and stronger spell casting as a warlock gets? You could mix give them an invocation or two, but I'd rather see something more inspired by the warlock style rather than the outright mechanics. Maybe just add a few patrons like ancestors, with options for protection and summoning, and dragons, with extra elemental stuff and resistance, for some class specific patrons and the aforementioned change to make each patron bonus feature a choice and you bump this up in terms of fun and power to be more like a warlock but with less raw spell casting power
as someone who loves the warlock, eldritch knight, and blood hunter classes, this one feels so... boring and pointless. it almost feels like it was designed for tables that don't allow multiclassing, and yet this subclass is just way weaker (and honestly less flavorful) than simply multiclassing blood hunter and warlock.
