Totally agree, besides the fact that the amp plays most of the breakup, the guy wants to show up more than the subject ... like a girl's video ... just annoying
The "unaffected" tone was far too crunchy already. It made all the pedals sound almost the same. They all sounded like the Origin's native overdrive. How do I know? Because I also have a Marshall Origin and it has a very characteristic overdriven tone. Despite the fact that the Origin is supposed to be a good 'pedal platform' amp, it's actually not that great as a pedal platform. Dagan always does a great job though, so I hope to see another similar video with a much cleaner amp!
Dagan you give exellent advice while still making sure the choice we Make is the best for our individual needs, and because of that I only watch PMT cheers mate.
@@glennlilley8608 I use overdrive pedals on clean amp. In this review I want see the pedal overdrive, his particular sound. I don't want a contaminate sound with a drive amp..
I discovered my tone recently by accident. I had some "expensive" pedals on my board, but removed them from the board. Think they won't be back there anytime soon. Three of those pedals are here in this video (TS808, OCD and MXR). I recently borrowed a Marshall Jackhammer JH-1 from a friend and couldn't believe my ears what it did in OD mode to my sound on a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, with the gain at 1 o'clock, as well with Strat as my Les Paul. It did give a beautiful boost to my clean tone I haven't heard from other pedals I own myself or tried from friends. After also some research on the internet I decided to purchase the JH-1. Could get it for just 30 bucks (second hand). I wasn't familiar with the "new" Marshall pedals so I did some reading and on the webpages about the JH-1 the Guv'nor 2 plus was mentioned alot too. How the Guv'nor is a much more versatile pedal then the JH-1 and that the DS mode of the JH-1 sucks. Which I noticed myself, DS mode sucks indeed. I will use the JH-1 only in OD mode. So I thought lets try the Guv'nor 2 too, which I purchased for 35 bucks. During experimenting and dialing in the Guv'nor I discoverd that I get an amazing sound with the JH-1, Boss Blues Driver and the Guv'nor 2 in conjuction with eachother. Never had a better tone. So I documented the whole setup with all the parameters. Incase someone might f$#k my settings up by turning the knobs. The sound I get now works extremely well for rhythm guitar as also for lead guitar.
The OCD took me some time to tame. I play line-in, and it benefits greatly from having the volume up higher than the gain, and only very slowly adding gain to hit the desired tone, maybe making adjustments on the pickups or whatever. It was also a game changer to run it through some EQ and a color filter (last thing in my chain before mixer is an MXR bass DI/preamp with distortion circuit, noise gate, and color switch). With some hard work I've gotten some fantastic tones out of the OCD with every setting on my guitar (a dual humbucker schecter with coil splitting, and, obviously, a tone knob).
Ibanez TS-808 and Maxon OD-808 have that low mid growl for heavy tones! Boss SD-1 is similar but has more upper mids and messes up, not as clear note-to-note definition. I have all three (well TS-9 instead of TS-808) and the best tone with a Tubescreamer is with the Level, or Balance in the Maxon, ALL the way up for pushing a semi-dirty amp, Drive at 9 o'clock, Tone almost ALL the way down! You can have '80s Iron Maiden or Judas Priest heavy sound and beyond depending on your amp! Boss SD-1 dialed similarly is better for American sound like Ratt and Twisted Sister.
I am pretty new to this. However I thought you ran an overdrive pedal on your clean Channel. I didn't realize you would stack it on top of your distorted Channel.
At roughly 18:10 you say the Fulltone OCD is the first to have MOSFET clipping stages in it and others are copies. It’s not. Look at the Blackstone Appliances MOSFET Overdrive. It’s been around for over a decade.
Dagan make everything good, real good, even with that amp set waaaayy too crunchy. Green Rhino IV or MXR Super Badass Dist, for me both are more flexible because they have more tone twisty knob thingys and make everything sound real good even without Dagan.
JHS has a video on types of Overdrives. How about a video or series of videos on the 5 best Overdrive in each type? Soft Clipping 1 (Non-Transparent: Mid Frequency Hump)(TS-9 Type), Soft Clipping 2 (Transparent)(Blues Breaker Type), Hard Clipping 1 (OCD type), Hard Clipping 2 (Centaur Type), Transistor Based (Blues Driver Type).
The point of Edge of break up is that if you really dig in it distorts and if you play light it sounds clean. He was digging in pretty hard I bet so it sounds gritty
Rock and roll Russell brand (no disrespect, RB is a bit of a goon) always comes through with solid gear reviews! Currently bored with my TS9 and looking for a different flavor. This was very helpful for narrowing down my decision
Fulltone OCD looks like really good to play some modern Alternative Rock, some Asian alt rock like Japanese Alt rock and Indonesian have warm, bassy and compressed-like sound
Awesome stuff as usual, Dagan. I live and breathe by the Boss SD-1. I've found it best to use it with a crunchy tone on the amp - not so much with a clean channel. Dunno, I've found it thin and harsh-sounding on a clean channel, but that might just be my own stupidity at play. Maybe I'm missing a trick there. I've tried all the others in the video, but I'm more than happy with the SD-1. For the price, there just aren't any more reasonable options otherwise.
Nice overdrive comparison but, what about those? The Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-9, Modtone Bohemian, Modtone Dallas, Boss Blues Driver, Boss OD-3 and TC Electronics Mojo - Mojo. It would be nice to see a comparison about them all.
You say that Boss SD-1 isn"t mid hump pedal but it is tube screamer version from Boss only with a asymmetric clipping. Switch on the Fulltone OCD is High Peak- Low Peak so it"s works on amplitude of signal ans it"s not high pass- low pass filter.
I have a full stack Black Star just the HT 100 so I need an Overdrive but should I go with the less expensive one cuz I only need it for a couple songs to push it up or Plunge and get a Friedman or a strymon OD pedal ? The song face down in the gutter XYZ is one of the songs thanks for the video I'll keep searching ☆
Of my knowledge the ocd is the best of the ones right here and the best overdrive pedal in the world is a argenziano efetti MKF this thing will make you trow all your distortions ts and ocd away the moment you plug it 😂🙌🎸
I use a Boss ""Power Stack"! The best I've ever used! Sounds a lot like the Maxon you reviewed! A world of OD'a in one pedal! From good dirty Blues to almost Metal! Why no review?!
Um...pretty sure I saw mosfet overdrive/distortion pedals in the 80's...by DOD and/or Digitech? Not to mention the Marshall 3210 Lead 100 MOSFET (and other models) amps that came out in the mid to late 80's.
Another useful demo from Dagan, one of my favorite youtuber's. I love his enthusiasm and Dagan is pure rock and roll.
I love this guy’s idea of “edge of breakup”
Lol seriously
Never call duegan “THIS GUY” he’s a legend
@Micah Leblanc never call Dagan "Duegan"
Yeah.. you don't even need an overdrive pedal lol.
Sounds like the Orgin is cranked to me.
I'm just happy to see that the 80s are alive and well in the UK
The sheer joy you get from playing makes me smile every time
Waste of time - Could’ve been a good video but all the pedals sound the same because the amp was way past ‘on the verge of break up’.
Agree, waste of time...
Totally agree, besides the fact that the amp plays most of the breakup, the guy wants to show up more than the subject ... like a girl's video ... just annoying
Agree, useless video, the guys a show off
You guys need French fries because y’all are salty af.
whalerider he isn’t a show off
I think you passed the verge and the edge a few miles back homie 😂🤘🤘
I love getting tips and guides from Russel Brand
Yes OVERDRIVE !! Next one of chorus or delay!!
I really adored the tube screamer
I think it’s my favorite one
Great video! Super job at demonstrating their characteristics and you knew your Maxon history!
The "unaffected" tone was far too crunchy already. It made all the pedals sound almost the same. They all sounded like the Origin's native overdrive. How do I know? That 808 sounds lovely
Love the energy, man! Great video!

Why not use clean Amp?
Why not lay off the "Just for Men"?
Fair point, But, it's an overdrive review, y'know
Because nobody has time for dust covers and lysol.
@@glennlilley8608 I use overdrive pedals on clean amp. In this review I want see the pedal overdrive, his particular sound. I don't want a contaminate sound with a drive amp..
@@macauley70 then just find another video 🤷
My favorite and effective overdirve pedal is OD 100 Behringer, spectacular
OCD always sounds the best to me.
Great demo Dagan and own the TS, OCD, and SD-1 which are all great but what surprised me was the Crayon!
The verge of breakup is already more overdrive than I want in a pedal. Ours go to eleven!!!!
Damn the crayon sounds amazing
Absolutely! - how come hardly anyone commented on that. I totally agree and think I may have to get one! *)
It surprised me too
You have to include the dirty shirley pedal from Friedman! It’s a killer overdrive! It makes any “regular guy rig” sound awesome!
I love how what Dagan calls "on the edge of break-up" is what I call "well and truly over the edge and hurtling towards the rocks below.
Tube Screamer best all around but I prefer the SD1 as a boost pedal for metal.
SD1 is very underrated.
Came for the pedals-stayed for the guitar and the nice playing
Aggressive nuzzle is something I get from my German Shepherd dog! Perfect description!

Nice Vid Dagan! Please Demo and Review the Boss BD-2! Thank you Sir, and please keep up the Good Work! You’re a HELL of a Guitarist!!
Dagan us like a little kid in a music havin too much fun playin with his toys in the video but then again who doesn't love Dagan. Hugs.
The one I like Is the Crayon.
Cool video. But that slightly breakup-y tone is full on crunchy.
But too many Tubescreamers, just sayin'.
SD-1 is so good. loved how Zakk Wylde used it when he started with Ozzy
Which Origin is in this video? I like that “verge of break up” sound on it’s own.
Dagan looks like he just stepped out of the 80s. He may be a hard rock time traveler.

Great video. I felt into the crunchy amp the TS808 & SD-1 sounded great. They were similar, the SD-1 sounded slightly edgier.
They are similar OD in circuits.
Ooii!! Sometimes you remind me of Captain Jack Sparrow... 🤘🏻
Cck
I like the Crayon.
I am pretty new to this. However I thought you ran an overdrive pedal on your clean Channel. I didn't realize you would stack it on top of your distorted Channel.
I think the "verge of breakup" is not that bad. Especially since I also plan to use a pedal on an already high gain tone.
At roughly 18:10 you say the Fulltone OCD is the first to have MOSFET clipping stages in it and others are copies. It’s not. Look at the Blackstone Appliances MOSFET Overdrive. It’s been around for over a decade.
Giving me Nino Bettencourt vibes with the riffs/solos you were playing!
OH COME ON GUYS I COULDNT DECIDE SO I BOUGHT ONE LITERALLY YESTERDAY LOL
If you only you used a cleaner tone on your amp first instead of such a high gain to begin with. How can we tell what the pedal is doing to the tone?
Dagan make everything good, real good, even with that amp set waaaayy too crunchy. Green Rhino IV or MXR Super Badass Dist, for me both are more flexible because they have more tone twisty knob thingys and make everything sound real good even without Dagan.
I always go back to the Ibanez TS 808

How long did you have to save up for the Gibson Custom and all of those pedals?
OCD is my most favourite distortion pedal of all time.
Howabout the MXR Powerstack,it sounded like real Marshall overdriven to me.

Unaffected? His "unaffected" signal is the amp gain jacked to breakup? Makes it hard to tell what the OD is doing vs what the amp is doing

The reason of BOSS SD-1 's price is because it debut 3 decades ago and it didn't changed itself much.
TS808 Oasis through and through Noels pedal for years
Try using a Marshall BB2 pedal and running a TS before it, the BB acts like a slightly broken up amp and the TS does the rest.

awesome
