For future reference when working on a 2 stroke don't use starting fluid or break clean or parts cleaner to see if it will start or run on it can and will destroy a 2 stroke instead get yourself a squirt bottle and fill it with 50 to 1 mixed 2 stroke gas and squirter that into the carbs
You guys were killin me with the carb spray and runnin compression on dry cylinders. I'm sure those bottom 2 are wasted. Either borescope the cylinders or just rebuild it. I guarantee that thing will leave u stranded in the middle of the lake/river/ocean etc....
Using starting fluid will wash the oil off of the bearings and cause it to knock. Also after you hooked the oil line I didn't see anyone pump the oil primer bulb that also could have contributed to the knock.
Bottom carb is plugged and probably contributed to it burning up the bottom cylinders. You finished it off I'm sure running it with the starting fluid. The oil injection can't get oil to the cylinder without gas from the carb plus you didn't prime it back after hooking the hose up. Premix didn't matter since the jets are plugged. Overheating made it a 1000 times worse. Also fuel and water coming from the vent on top carb says float is stuck. Not being critical of you, but it is what it is. Go go ahead and clean the carbs and hope for the best. Delete the oiler and run premix. Will make someone a nice parts motor though.
I think the engine needs overhauled,( the #3 and #4 cylinders are low on compression probably caused by the lower carburetor being partially clogged at best! also the oil injection system (VRO=variable ratio oiling) system never was trouble free, there were tons of failures, and I wouldn't trust it! Also water pump should be changed, and fuel line and hoses probably need replaced. I worked on marine engines for 32 years and I have seen multiple engines just like it. Nice video!!
It could also mean the lower two cylinders got a little water in them at some point and the valves rusted a bit. Running it for a short while and then retesting may help that.
Next time before you even think of cranking over a man unknown engine use fresh gas (the lubricant for the internal parts is mixed in the gas). Drain the carburetor bowls, spray a small amount of any lubricant into each cylinder and rotate by hand. Compression test indicated a problem so retest that again. Good luck there is good promise for that engine.
As a mechanic that has rebuild hundreds of these you should take the carbs apart clean then good make sure they are all getting fuel then start. be careful with starting fluid as it can cause damage to cylinders that might have a clogged jet on the carb. that's not good compression either 20 psi difference not good. Rebuild it before it blows! and if that's a 87 you can't re-sleeve.
This video and many comments are so frustrating. I know that motor would've started in a moment if only you checked the fluids and knew how the controls worked.
to get fuel ⛽️ one make sure fresh gas. 1-2 primer bulb and vent on the tank needs to be opened knob on top of gas cap. all the way open loosely up lefty it may take several bulb will go firm. oil tank yes some have a metering pump self inject the proper amount of oil. but this is old school. prime it up i guess to get oil pre mixed till it’s firm. being that it sat mixed gas like for weed whacker thinned just to lube up cylinder walls prevent scoring the lever next to the gear shift is a choke lever that goes up till the engine catches put back down crank intervals it also revs the engine don’t go full boar out of the gate. thousand rpms till it warms up or it will stall. then put the choke lever down. need a drip bottle like a plastic ketchup bottle something you can add some mix gas. before running it off the gas tank. the pre mix temporally gallon of gas will smoke but will burn off after running a gallon through to get stuff lubed up. need to make sure that fuel tank has been flushed out then fill it the oil can needs to be dumped old oil. get a fresh two stroke goes in. next time for a water pump or impeller. remove lower unit housing under neath put everything back reverse order. next lower unit gear lube. drain. either on boat or put said unit on a temp stand remove vent screw and main screw let the oil drain if the oil is milky brown theirs a seal behind the prop behind the shaft that needs to be replaced add assembly lube to prop shaft. take a black sharpie to line up shifting cables prior to removal re insert unit. refill lower unit with gear lube till flows out the vent 🕳️ at the top. add extra to half a extra pump to make sure no air bubbles 🫧 top screw quickly install bottom wipe up excess oil. some have rubber rings or some crush washers replace if needed. charge your battery full 100% do the maintenance first then go crank it let it run. it will take water a bit to fill jacket and pea out should be steady not dribbles. little bit of lube spray on the starter yes need to get a proper staring. deep cycle battery.
Before this video I checked the plugs on the engine which one had aluminum on it so I knew it wasn’t long for the world this is because the previous owner ran is with a failing fuel pump which is leaking fuel every where in the video it’s a wonder it ran at all with how bad the bottom two cylinders were.
Had premix in the tank and oil tank full of oil. Motor had piston slap which wasn't caused by lack of oil its just a 30 year old engine thats wore out.
Yes heat will kill motors luckily this one only got to about 230 degrees Fahrenheit before we noticed it. This motor already had a bad knock before it got hot sadly but it was fun getting it to sorta run.
After a few seconds of running via quick start, give up and fix the fuel system , obviously has spark, dude running without a lubrication is like taboo
Actually it's the hand throttle for when the gear lever is in neutral. Holding the key in before starting engages the auto choke, as said in the video.
Omg. At least dont video yourselves showing the world how little you know about boats and motors. It’s less costly and smarter to watch people on video who know what they are doing and then just imitate them! Lucky you youngsters have years of time so you can gain real knowledge from older people who know how to do things. Watch more utube! In the mean time please don’t kill yourselves.
I'm not a mechanic, but any engine sitting for several years needs NEW GAS! DUH!
Good carby clean she run like a dream buddy good find
Man, always start off with new plugs fresh fuel and new primer hose if needed !
Thats big brain i had the oil injection hooked up and premix in the feul tank but that would definitely be better for the motor than starting fluid 👍.
You guys were killin me with the carb spray and runnin compression on dry cylinders. I'm sure those bottom 2 are wasted. Either borescope the cylinders or just rebuild it. I guarantee that thing will leave u stranded in the middle of the lake/river/ocean etc....
'87?!?!?!? BRAND NEW!!!! Of course it'll run!
Watched on a few minutes, she now run like 75% perfect,
Using starting fluid will wash the oil off of the bearings and cause it to knock. Also after you hooked the oil line I didn't see anyone pump the oil primer bulb that also could have contributed to the knock.
I have opened the engine and figured out it was piston slap all bearings are tight just a wore out engine.
Bottom carb is plugged and probably contributed to it burning up the bottom cylinders. You finished it off I'm sure running it with the starting fluid. Premix for life...ditch the oil injection..all that ether is noo good for long periods of use lol. Straight killed that motor.
Haha yep it definitely need a overhaul and a lot of love and the vro is definitely getting deleted reminds me of the oil injection on my jet ski.
It could also mean the lower two cylinders got a little water in them at some point and the valves rusted a bit. Running it for a short while and then retesting may help that.
TO BE! Conjugate the damned verb!

What’s wrong with pumping the fuel ball. Don’t need starting fluid bad idea
Starting fluid on a 2 stroke is a very bad idea! No lubrication!
As a mechanic that has rebuild hundreds of these you should take the carbs apart clean then good make sure they are all getting fuel then start. be careful with starting fluid as it can cause damage to cylinders that might have a clogged jet on the carb. that's not good compression either 20 psi difference not good. That clicking is the primer pump
Need to replace the impeller, that may be why it is overheating. Should replace it every other season.
$300 NICE!!!
Thats a nice boat i got the same mine is 89 put 115hp mercury elpto runs 34 mph with 4 people and fishing gear
Yea in my short ride in this one i fell in love with it just need to get the engine rebuilt.
Are you in florida?
@@marinemotorman8302 Yep were in the great state of Florida.
Im in Glen st Marys florida too

bypass the oil pump and run mixed gas. it's so much better. if that oil pump goes while you are cruising it will blow the motor
VROs will over oil if they fail.
That 90 should have at least 130 140
No smoking,e means no oil , why would you start it on strait gas, ??? Not knowing h if oil injection is working
Had premix in tank aswell.
Before doing this you maybe could have watched Mustie1 or NNKH service a boat engine.
Each one of those car breakers have got a screw on the bottom to drain the bulls take the screw out but the car breakers drain all the water out
😮 v clean carbs
don't trust the oil injection on those older models.
Haha yep it reminds me of the untrustworthy oil injection on the old 2 stroke seadoo's.
That starting fluid is a no no
$300 ?!! What a A-hole ! 🤣 LoL, the trailer is worth that!
Nice score!
Dude u do not need to be working nor being on a boat owner 😂😂😂. But i guess good content somewhat. Much love to ya from Maryland❤❤❤
Guys the camera is jerking around too much.
That fire extinguisher has been recalled.and a replacement is free.it will melt during a fire making it unusable.
No trolling motor 🤣 😊
The best money can
The worst thing you can do is spray starting fluid in an outboard engine do some research you guys are just gonna blow that thing up
Like put 90hp on old ranger fiberglass boat
Put some sea foam in it will be helpful
Those bearings are gone
U guys need some basic mechic classes. U do more harm than good to that engine!
Before this video I checked the plugs on the engine which one had aluminum on it so I knew it wasn’t long for the world this is because the previous owner ran is with a failing fuel pump which is leaking fuel every where in the video it’s a wonder it ran at all with how bad the bottom two cylinders were.
Good motor till u got it they are steps
I’ll buy it
Another one of those “VRO systems fail” warnings. They have failed and destroyed many OMC motors, don’t let yours get added to the list.
CRESTLINER MADE TO LAST FOREVER I HAVE A 1958 MODEL I WOULDNT TRADE IT FOR NEW FIBERGLASS BOAT
😮only run if clean dam carburetor
Whatever you do don’t use premix in a spray bottle .WTF.
130 is the mark
Johnson evenrude motor worth 1000 dollars trailer 500 hundred used
300 means you would quad your money if the motor was an ANCHOR
Brains trust
U probably have ruined that motor, should never use starting fluid on a 2 stroke it has no oil to lube motor. Should use some premix gas to prime.
Had premix in the tank and oil tank full of oil. Motor had piston slap which wasn't caused by lack of oil its just a 30 year old engine thats wore out.
Momma i love Vicky Valencourt and she love me!!!!
Running your motor hot is not good looks you just kill that motor
Yes heat will kill motors luckily this one only got to about 230 degrees Fahrenheit before we noticed it. This motor already had a bad knock before it got hot sadly but it was fun getting it to sorta run.
After a few seconds of running via quick start, give up and fix the fuel system , obviously has spark, dude running without a lubrication is like taboo
in my country newzealand you will not get a dinghy for 300 bucks hahaha
that lever on the shifter is your choke!
Actually it's the hand throttle for when the gear lever is in neutral. Holding the key in before starting engages the auto choke, as said in the video.
missing kill switch will not run need the lanyard.
Omg 😂
