I found an early 70s open runabout like this in the early 90s. Set it up with a yamy 90 and kept it stripped down as a dive/ski boat. Great fun knocking around down in the Keys in that old log. Back then they were still figuring out glass and everything was overbuilt
1963 Evinrude electric shift is in neutral until electric power goes to either forward or reverse shift coil in lower unit, use of correct fluid is a must. 1970 had a design change where it defaulted to forward with no electricity, you had to supply electric to go into neutral or reverse. Today's motor are electric shift.
I believe like the old 40hp Larks they have a thermostat that will open...but should see a spit of water out the top hole...at that age I highly doubt the rubber water pump impeller has survived. Cool video
It's in gear because it has electric shift and defaults into forward gear when there is no power to the shift mech ( so you can limp back to the ramp ) If you started it with the key switch it may get power to the shifting
Also nicknamed dockbusters because of defaulting to forward gear! LOL I have a 1972 Evinrude 125 electric shift. The biggest thing is cleaning the contacts on those push buttons to make sure power is getting to the shift solenoids, as well as keeping the button mechanics lubed so they don't jam up (I just spray a shot of white lithium grease)
These old motors are hard to beat. I have a johnson the same year. I also have an extra set of controls if you ever need them. Go to tractor supply and get a set of plug wires for the 6 cylinder tractor because the 4 cylinder will have 2 shorter wires. They are copper core also
The motor flush actually came with the boat so I’m not to sure where you could get one bit since these motors are so old might be hard to find them now.
Modern 2 stroke oil is quite a bit better than the old stuff so we were running it at about 46:1. Any where from 50:1 to 40:1 should be good. We ran it at 46:1 just to be safe.
Not running on all cylinders. I had an electric shift outboard for about 15 years. Never had a problem with it and ran it hard enough it shot a piston through the block one day. Also, go ahead and clean the carb. I'm sure the jets are plugged. Not good not having the oil getting to all cylinders due to lack of fuel. You'll score up the cylinders.
to what i heard, you're right, one of the cylinders is not firing, basically, the motor is very good but it needs attention, it is very important that that type of engine is not running lean because, it will overheat pistons, leading to gripping and scoring the cylinders. better to replace the water pump impeller before going to water, to what I understand, the condition of the water pump impeller is unknown.
These old V4's are tought to run on a hose. Better bet is to put the engine in a barrel full of water to ensure it gets cooling. Also looks like its starting in gear.
Thats what i thought too thats why we didn't run super long gonna try to run in a barrel next and see if that helps if not probably needs a water pump.
Put a dam impeller on it so it can cool more dum ass people ruin outboards looking at them not pumping water it's hard to watch people destroy good outboards from ignorance please
There's actually a document that shows how to add a telltale hose to the older V4s. It's just drilling and tapping a fitting into the upper starboard side of the water jacket. A Google search will lead you to the procedure.
I've given u a like but u need to sort your camera skills out use a tripod and use a phone not a go pro audio is low, sorry for the bad remarks we all got to learn somehow 😀
I disagree. You just have to maintain them properly, especially the switch contacts in the control box (which is the biggest fail point). I've got a 1972 Evinrude 125 electric shift that runs great and switches gears like it's supposed to.

Thanks for the video. Keep em coming!

That's quite a stylish & sporty looking boat

top hole is exhaust if im correct, any other video of them running doesnt show water spitting out that hole.

Thanks for the info thats what we thought but was not sure. Not a ton of info on the older engines. All info helps 👍

REmember seeing these boats ib Sears catalog, sold for around $700.00.

Thanks for the tip. gotta go there for our chicken food any way 👍
Hooked up catfishing. I would be interested in the controls. Please let me know if your willing to sell. Thanks
Hi. Where did you find the motor flusher for that engine. I've got a 1965 60 h.p. Evinrude Super Four.
The motor flush actually came with the boat so I’m not to sure where you could get one bit since these motors are so old might be hard to find them now.
Ok. Thanks. I appreciate your quick response. Also, how did the motor turn out for you?
I haven't tried to start mine. Is yours still running?
@@damaniryan1632 it was running okay but my brother wanted a little more power so he upgraded to a 88 special.
Hi Dan. Did you have a hard time selling it?
Hi Dan. What was the oil to gas ratio of this motor? Was it 50:1 or 25:1 ? Thanks
Modern 2 stroke oil is quite a bit better than the old stuff so we were running it at about 46:1. Any where from 50:1 to 40:1 should be good. We ran it at 46:1 just to be safe.

Camera person makes this look like a roller coaster ride
...and the main characters make it look like they have done very little preparation beforehand.

Yea thats what i thought need to get a barrel to run it in for sure.
Doing a compression check on a “dry” cold engine that hasn’t run in years is not a good indicator of a healthy engine.
Just sayin.
We put oil in cylinders before we started videoing.
Il sel 69 fishmaster with 40 evemruad good bout running great 900
Looks like the water isn't pumping? No tell-tale.

@@dirtydans4753 built before the peeer was invented.

Doesn't have a tell-tale. Impellers should be changed every couple of seasons anyway....this motor is well overdue. 🤣👍
Rule 1 Take the prop off for safety!!!
If you beat your cylinoid your probe will have plenty of juice.🤣
Needs a water pump. Run it in a bucket to be safe. It's only firing on 2 cylinders

Compression is quite low.
What the he'll are you doing with the wire tester in the plug wire socket dum
You can use a test light to test for spark... it can also be done with just a spark plug too.
Electric shift = junk
