    Do the flex test on the transom, lift your motor up and lock it in the up.position, then grab the lowered unit and move the motor up and down, if your transom is solid it will move your whole boat, if not you will see it flex under the weight of your motor

    Gotta ALWAYS replace the impeller. That's an annual job in my book. If you are replacing the lower unit oil, you should definitely be replacing the impeller. They are designed to be replaced and they are much cheaper than Tow Boat US.!!! Great video as always... Keep em coming!

    • @tim4269
      @tim4269 5 місяців тому

      That is a bit excessive schedule on the impeller. 5-6 years if you use the boat a lot like all year. My last boat was 20 years old on the same impeller but I only had 3 months out of the year I could use the boat and the last 10 years it got used 5-10 times if that.

  • @JW-fq1pp
    @JW-fq1pp 10 місяців тому +14

    To replace the transom the right way, you'll need to pop the deck off. The deck is attached to the hull at the gunnels under the rub rails using aluminum rivets. If you drill out the rivets the deck should just lift right off giving you open access to the entire transom. Helps if you have a hoist to lift the deck off. Then its just a matter of cutting the interior fiberglass layer out, digging out the old plywood, and putting in new ply with a new fiberglass layer on top. As I understand it, there are new products out there to use instead of plywood to replace it. I repaired at least 6 transoms that way (many decades ago), its labor intensive but definitely doable.

    Looks like the water might have just been years of condensation in there seeping in very slowly. looked like it was about a 9:1 oil to water ratio I wouldn’t worry about it too much on a free boat. Take it out a few times and sell her for an upgrade.

  • @daddski1

    one of the first things you should do guys , when buying a new boat is pull the prop off. The biggest leak of water into the lower comes from when a prop picks up fishing line and crap from the water and wraps it on the prop shaft in front of the propeller. I check mine every trip since it only takes 30 seconds and almost always is there new line. That line cuts into the main seals on the prop shaft when going fwd. The prop is trying to eat your lower so there is always fwd psi on the shaft. The reason it does not actually eat the lower is because there is a thrust washer on the prop shaft, in front of the prop, stopping it from actually moving fwd and damaging the lower unit. Anyway, always check it. if you have some, you will see how it has worked itself into the seals. You can normally, carefully remove it all and be ok.

    Holy mother of.... this is one of the old classics my dude. And in line with the boats used in some of the james bonds of the time. I myself have the 78 ssv115 and would literally give my left arm to restore this ol girl back to her former glory. These boats are pretty well built even if you have to redo the transoms and floors and pretty much replace the wood. I know i have on my ssv and my inboard one to. If you were close to Lafayette indiana id be willing to give you a hand for free just to help in any way. Give this boat all the time love and respect bro shes a classic glastron ya know.

    Try to find a marina in your area that recycles old boats. They'll have tons of old boat parts sitting on shelves. They'll usually let you browse through their inventory. You should be able to find control cables and a stern light for cheap. The stern light base on your boat is meant to have a telescopic lamp pole that is hardwired instead of having a removable pole with a socket in the base like most of the modern designs. Try to find a stern light with a bayonet style bulb. They last longer then the old automotive dome light style bulbs, especially if the motors charging system is unregulated as many old outboards were.

    Awesome vid! And what a cool old boat. She's got some real pretty lines to her, and looks nice running in that lake. A great little ride! And man.... the ole' Johnson 85 Outboard. What a motor! A legend out on the water, whether it's a "Javelin" or not. These were just phenomenal outboards. I'd love to have that boat. I'd polish the heck out of it, and bring that finish back out a little. Fortify that transom a little bit. Do a little work on the wood trim pieces. I actually like the gray carpet.... and I'd change out the seats and do a little more interior work. New guages and steering wheel. Looks like maybe it's not trimmed quite right, as it runs. Looks like the motor needs to come up just a bit, once it gets on plane. It would be awesome if a trim pump could be installed. And boom! I'd run the heck out of this boat... out on my Lake. Love this boat!!

    No way would I waste my time, effort and money re-doing the transom and stringers on that old design boat. I actually got the same exact type boat from my father in law many years ago that was in about the same shape and had that same motor. I passed on re-doing it and either gave it a way or sold it for almost nothing, I can't remember. I got it free, never looked back nor regretted it. A boat in great shape and well taken care of cost a lot of money and time to keep up in good shape alone, I surely don't want to start with a wore out old, outdated POS like that to start throwing money and time at but hey, you do you, I get you need UA-cam fodder but I'm out lol. I'll surely watch with a smile from my easy chair though.

    I just noticed. The transom is broken. You can see it at ua-cam.com/video/kd6ZeS41K6Y/v-deo.html both side are busted and leaning out. I would not put that in the water any further until a shop looked at it. At worst it'll break completely off losing the engine in the water and possibly sinking the boat. As for water in the lower unit. Only two ways for it to get in. Via the prop shaft seal or the water pump base plate gasket. Both are easy fixes.

    i think all the fiberglass on the transom will be cracked all over after first rip. you dont see old fiberglass boats near a lake anywhere around here in canada. they are always in a farmers field and stay there. Im really not trying to poke at good effort, but they just arent worth it unless you really wanna do the huge amount of work with new wood and fiberglass....if you do, thats what id prepare for

    Them old Johnson and Evinrudes are tough and resilient. You can easily hop up your 85 to a 115 or 125 hp. All you have to do is change the carbs and flywheel on those models. Block is the same.

    That transom is toast, you are going to have way more in time and glass work than you could ever get for that thing. Just my 2 cents….

    Great job! That 85 HP Johnson sounds great! I agree with the others that the transom be addressed right away. There are several options out there and you could possibly do a liquid transom. Again, great job!

      dont be a douche!@@jerrywilcox9890 it SHOULD be addressed even before taking it back on the lake again. a transom that rotten poses a significant danger to the engine falling off under load. severe risk of needing to be rescued from the middle of the lake, and don't dare bring friends/family on a boat with a transom in that condition

    Move that pin on the motor up one or two places you can trim her out and gain some speed.

    I'd try tracking down the cable and wiring to your speedo Joe. And I recommend adding in A belge pump for safety measures and purposes on that boat to.

    Try opening that fish finder if it's wet inside of it dry it out good. Then try some CRC electrical cleaner on the circuit boards. After soapy toothbrush and spray bottle rinsing the soap film off really good first then dry it out good and try that spray if it's still not working fully yet. Check the rubber waterproof seal on the casing of the fish finder to it could be bad.

    when you come up to speed tilt the motor up until the front end begins to bob up and down, then let the motor back down. This method will maximize fuel mileage and less rpm's to gain max speed. Great job

      Not a power trim (manual) so just about impossible to change the trim when he comes up to speed.

    Early 80s V-156, I had a late 70s trihull T-156. They were rated for 85 hp max, but they were just as fast and more nimble with the lighter 3 cylinder 70 hp versus the heavier 4 cyl 85.
