- How do you launch a motorcycle and win a drag race at the traffic lights?
It is actually pretty simple, but almost everyone, including seasoned motorcycle racers do it wrong. Lets figure out how to be the first racer into turn 1! - Авто та транспорт
Cool, I learned something. But I just built a custom electric, so, no one beats me at launching now anyway lol
Hah, yeah no one is going to beat you on that thing, seriously cool build!
@@MikeonBikes Thanks!
Lmao nice
and thats why you have 2 step
"You don't want to give 1000cc sportbike a full throttle because you don't want it to land on your neck" )))
At 14” over, WOT and 10k launch is no problem. Fun fact.
Yeah
@@ToddSills
Launching like that still can be a problem!
@@yong7801 shouldn’t be. I even launch my short bike at 70%. 14” longer, you should be tossing it wide open. Just about any bike.
@@ToddSills
I got ya, it's all about that clutch hand!
What bikes do u have and what wheelbase?
Can we take a moment to appreciate how ageless the theme song at the end of the video is. Never gets old. Just the right dose
Song name?
👍
Can we take a moment to.......stop sounding like everyone else.
@@roshanbaig1487 have you tried using please and thank you any time throughout your life? The results are much better.
Does anyone know the name of the song please?
There see? Much more humanity and makes you come across as less of a total twat 😂

Your empirical data can't be disputed. 😁
idk, it's got some hole(shot)s in it
For anyone that drives a manual car this works exactly the same swapping your hands for your feet.
In a car, it’s more of controlling the starting throttle before the launch than it is during the acceleration. If you have optimal rpms, you’ll get optimal acceleration shared with minimal wheel spin. Then you just dump the clutch and pin it.
Been doing for years in my car and never thought to use on my bikes, but i don't launch on road much.
I was also going to try this with my car. Lol
I found it to be effective in my turbo diesel to give full throttle a second before releasing the clutch. It reacts slower than a husky 701 obviously.
Instructions confusing I bled out
Nine hours ago I thought to myself: "I wish Mike on Bikes would teach me something new today."
Lol i just taught myself 10 minutes before watching this video so funny 😎
Crazy audio/video quality, always something to learn and no click bait or beating around the bush. This is undoubtedly one of the best and my favourite channel on UA-cam!
This is the first video of yours I've seen and am already impressed. This was the first takeoff video I've seen to show a decent video of both the throttle and the clutch for the takeoff. Most just show the clutch at a and angle. This was a great explanation definitely gained a subscribed for sure
Awesome info! I always wondered about the amount of clutch drag at launch. Letting it out as soon as possible without wheelieing makes a lot of sense.
That’s an awesome tip. I’ve always wondered my 0-100 times are slower than others. Thanks man!
launching my modded DR 650 is so much fun because it really gets off the line super quick and then you can go full throttle almost immediately and its right at the edge of wheelying which is only controlled by shifting my bodyweight front or back. its about the perfect balance... so much fun and pretty quick
I really like your channel. Your content is always exceptionally good. Thank for sharing!
Doing that launch for many years, it is so well explained Mike. Keep sharing knowledge and uploding these kinds of videos.
Glad to see I've been doing it right, but also good to learn about other bike types!
You’re great mike on bikes. I’ve learnt a lot in your channel as well as life at Lean and others of course.
It feels oddly satisfying to find out that I've been doing it right, despite all my riding friends telling me I need to rev high and launch in 2nd gear. I just did what I do to start from a stop but faster.
Depends on the bike. 701 has a decently long 1st gear and sport bikes even longer. 1st gear on my 701 is somewhere between 2nd and 3rd on my fe501.
Best instructional videos on UA-cam 🤘🏼
That's so nice ...I will try it, I play before too much with clutch, like using it as a traction control...😅 worked somehow against amateurs 😅 but yours is sure much better 👍👍👍👍Thanx
Finally someone explained this in a way I can understand
Thank you kind sir
BRB gonna use this on my 125
Man I tried, you pretty much have to keep the clutch pulled in considering how fast they stall
BRB gonna go try this on my 300hp turbo busa 😂😂
@@jimmyneutron5679 it works fine lol, full throttle and legit drop the clutch, don’t work it, lean forward and drop
Yesterday I was looking if you already made a video of this subject..... None found.... Thanks for the quick response!
Im learning and this helped alot thanks👍 you answered some questions i had.
Great vid! thanks for the knowledge, looking forward to putting it into practise 💙
Dude this is great, time to change my technique again.
Love your tutorials 🤝 used 8n my videos all the time!
Thankyou very much for your sharing. I think I can start the bike faster now. 1 heart from Việt Nam.
I'm always waiting for the closing music. so cool! haha
Really cool video! Great explanation! Gotta go on and practice this now 😂 also I feel incredibly cool seeing you wear the same gloves as I do 😏😏 😂😂😂
The funny thing about me is that my race starts are Mike on bikes standard😉 but my slow starts need improved so much. I still learned a lot though thanks Mike but a slow start video would be good. BTW I am just a kid too and I'm really only on a bike with a clutch recently.
Don't need empirical data Mike, I've been doing it that way for years with my cruisers. This way is also easier on the clutch, so it made sense to me to launch this way every time. Ciao
Great vid, good info. Thanks, man. Gonna practice this one.
I need to practice this the next time i ride, thanks for the tip!
I knew i was doing it right🤘🤘. Thanks for the info!
Sir you are really a good teacher❤
Cool, learnt a lot. You earned a sub sir.
Learned something again! Thanks
Hey man. Your vids are great. You should do a vid on how to know when the front is about to give under full lean. Its the only thing that stops me from cornering harder. Im talking road bike road tyres, Hanging off ala motogp. Not counterweighting like on a dirt bike. Thats easy.
Tks mate, there is a saying that when your brain learn something new it increases his size and never comes to the previous size again!! And yes "there is always something new to learn"
That's a great technique! Dead simple too!
Me who is self traffic trained on the streets of India: Sounds about right.
Me as Indonesian 150 rider who always racing my bike when night ride or sunday morning ride with my friends
Just waiting for the green light holding the revs on your bike. 🤣🤣
Thanks for the video bruh I'm a beginner and these help me a lot
Quite brilliant!Thanks
Mike baaji! Best guide!
Absolutely love your content, I'll watch whatever you make lol
Got the same gloves, love them
awesome video............thanks mike
very informative and helpful sir. like. me I always mis that thing..
That was excellent!
Interesting. A buddy of mine did it the wrong way when I was doing a road trip with him. This was a few years back when I just got my bike and he was showing off a bit. I just let him "launch" while I took off normally. Nice to know how to do it properly, though I doubt I'll use this often if ever.
Pretty nice video for basic launching. Only thing I would add is using your feet, and or rear brakes to stay in place while you release the clutch a little past the normal friction zone. The difference is minor, but noticeable after some practice.
I love the end 🤘😎
Mike ..please we need more videos please
I was pretty good at Wholeshots . I was first out of 33 bikes to the first cornter in my first Motocross race 125 CC when I was 16 years old.. I did the port work and I ride the bike up and down a dirt road to warm it up a little so the spark plug would not load up .. 1976 Yamaha YZ-125-C
holeshot
Thanks man!
Managed to do a small wheelie on a 300cc with this method!
Throttle follows clutch - friction point and then add as req'd.
Revv and let-go is a no-no!
Are you Joe Satriani doppelganger? 😁
Great video!
Now I always do this on red lights 😁
Love it bro
This is helpful
I see some low sides.....Great videos.
Something new to try at the track this weekend!
That's exactly where it should be practiced haha gl on that. Do you upload anything about your track experience on youtube?
@@MrMaucool1 Are you asking me or Mike?
@@jmannUSMC you if that's fine, I like the sport and want to have some classes at the track one day 👌🏻
I have a 115cc motard with semi auto transmission (no hand clutch). I just step and hold the shift foot pedal, hold revs and release the pedal and WAY WEE GOOOO!
Interesting Fact‼️👏👏👏
Teaching people how to speed out of traffic lights. Well done.
So this is something that I need to learn and fast bc I feel that the drivers around me think I’ve been riding fit a while and know how to gage off fast but in reality I just stared a week ago and I take off so slow 😬😬
I'm gonna practice this when I buy my ninja 600j2 in 3 days 🤞🏿
I was just wondering how to do this because I went from a pit bike to a 650😂 very in depth tutorial
sv650 yes?
I've never tried to take off fast. I may give it a try.
thank you
Thanks man
Will try it on my CB300R
That was really informative Mike. I'm racing with supermotos for the first time this year, I'll give good use to this advice :)
Quick question, do you use the launch control in the 450?
He dont he said it in another video
For the legion! For the empirical!
Any advice on how to take advantage of Launch Control? I'm always confused about whether to dump the clutch or be more gradual etc. By 'always' I mean that I started trying it yesterday haha.
Can probably just dump three clutch and yank the throttle. Might get a little wheel hop as the ecu pulls back throttle
Depends on your bike, but gradually work your way up on the throttle and clutch release speed until you find yourself doing the best launches.
The empirical data also involves a holeshot device on your bike right?
You made a really good case at the end of the video and it's a really informative video thank you. However do you not use the launch control on the FS450? I think all 2016+ models came with it as well as two engine modes.
you should also apply rear brake before launching the bike as it will prevent wheelie
Keep your foot over the rear brake.....
Slight press controls the wheelspin.
I can proudly say I learned this myself 😫
thanks
I suck at launches...I'll give your technique a try...
Handy to know. Especially the idea around trying to ride clutch at same rate as throttle control.
Question: say bike has great low range torque..instead of a 1st gear launch.... could a 2nd gear launch be quicker? (Thinking for example. Duke/rc 390 or smc690 kind of bikes)
Just launch at a lower rpm, dont use second gear. And U dont recall 390 producing torque in the lower rev range, 6k is when the pull is fun
On 2 stroke its a bit diffrent because you gotta ride the clutch almost whole first gear with higher revs because of the power band and how easily they wheelie. But as soon as possible full gas without clutch.
Aprilia rs 125 owner here. Yea We gotta hold clutch all until powerband comes in or else it just dies off. Theyre still quite fast on launches
What bike is that, I'm looking for a supermoto to buy, that looks good.
Those guys on the line were like "thats gotta be against the law!"
The clutch.. I was launching and thought I was already on basically full power, so I just released my clutch the rest of the way at that final 5-10% was enough to clutch up and I wheelied away off the line.
cool!
Should I get my bike to the start of the powerband to launch effectively?
Your hand guard misaligned drove me nuts. Excellent explanation though
Engage launch control and pin the throttle. Thought I’d burn up the clutch the first few times, but it’s amazing after you figure it out.
I assumed this was just intuitive. Maybe its because my bike has terrible low end torque that I naturally started to use this technique, but I'd like to think I would be doing it regardless. Perhaps because I can't drive a car I haven't had my technique diluted with a different style so it seemed easier for me to understand. I'm honestly not sure.
Going to try this on my stripped Savage. I bet the bike is going to left without me haha
Will this work on a 2 stroke too because of the powerband? If not then how should i launch
As soon as it stops raining I'm going to spend an hour or so practicing my launches
Careful with engine temp.
he didnt mention about the which foot on the ground or how the foot positioned on the pegs, does it matter?
try your method with a peaky twostrokea and you will just stall it. full throttle and control the wheelie with clutch
Yanking the throttle . But janking I suppose can also work as long as you moving forward. .
i tried to do launch control at like 4-5k rpm but did a high power wheelie instead, i dropped it with the footbreak but i wasn't aiming for a wheelie🤣🤣 i want a quick launch.
Yeah when I used to lunch my grom as I wasn’t racing I’d use the clutch a lot it’s at least 3 seconds slower lol
You sure you are not cheating. 😂
BTW, I hope I had found your channel earlier.
