    Honestly, most of those questions are ones that everyone should ask before bringing any animals into their lives. Is the animal legal for you to have? Can you afford it? Does it fit your lifestyle? What does it eat and what habitat does it need and can you provide them? Are you willing and able to give the animal the time and care that it requires without shirking other duties? Too many people I know don't do this and I see animals getting re-homed/abandoned or neglected and that doesn't have to happen.

      A bit late, and I'm not sure about Kizmit, but often "spiking" animals have soft spikes at birth.
      Also there's a more recent video where she explains differences between American an African porcupines. They don't have and use their quills the same way.

    Glad to know she is doing well. Same thing happened to my Syrian hamster. One night she didn't want to move, kept her eyes closed when she did and had a very bad wobble to her head. It looked like a neurological issue and I figured she wouldn't make it to morning. However, she did and after a day at the vets with some fluids and heat she was back to normal! Since then we have kept a space heater in the room and she's been fine ever since :)

    Kizmit is a really cool name, I'm glad she got over her hypothermia.
    I have the impression that evolution can be a political hot potato in some part of the U.S., not that we do not have some creationists here too. If you had (or have) to deal with creationists when visiting places with your animals, how do you do it?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  7 років тому +33

      SlyPearTree I've had a few creationists come talk with me after a public presentation. They've all been friendly and mostly just wanted to talk things over. I kindly told them my stance on species and evolution and they were respectful. Even if they have a different outlook on the world, like not trusting science and facts, it doesn't mean that they don't respect animals. They can help animal's lives better and make the world a better place by spreading love and kindness, even if they don't embrace evolution.

    • @WaltRBuck
      @WaltRBuck 7 років тому +8

      This is interesting indeed. I am a creationist. However, I believe that even the great Creator used (uses) many amazing sciences that we have and that we have yet to discover. Why is that? Because I believe that the universe is governed by certain laws and principles.
      How does that allow for a belief in science? I absolutely LOOOVVVVEEE science. It should be obvious though, that science is not much more than a human method of discovering the "laws and principles" by which all thing work, and this is true whether you believe in evolution or creation if you have even the smallest of inquisitive minds.
      The biggest difference (my opinion) is that evolution, as explained in biology, is a set of random events. Creation is not random. I do have a belief that nothing is truly random though. Once we know enough about a system, including its parameters, we can predict what is going to happen. Random is simply not having enough fact to predict. I hope that my point there is clear. There are many examples of this, and no I'm not preaching here. I think this is scientific.
      For instance, before we had an understanding of chemistry, we thought that many things just randomly happened (or that they were witchcraft). An understanding of thermodynamics and kinetics, along with a "few" other theories gives rise to understanding what will happen in a reaction under a set of conditions. We can now predict something that seemed random before.
      Anyway, the point is this, there should be NO reason, NONE, that creationist and evolutionists should fight ever. Having a difference of opinion is alright. In some cases it truly leads to amazing discoveries.

    • @Cwize1
      @Cwize1 7 років тому +1

      I grew up in a christian home but I am an atheist now. I really wouldn't say things like "not trusting science and facts" to describe creationists. Particularly in a public space like UA-cam. It is not so much that they don't embrace science but rather they are skeptical of the science of evolution. And when you are talking about 100s of millions of years, there is a lot to be skeptical about. I personally don't regret my Christian education. If nothing else, it teaches you to not always take everything anyone ever says at face value and to look at the facts themselves and come to your own conclusions. (Though certainly when there is broad consensus in the scientific community, it is a pretty good hint.)

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  7 років тому +7

      Walt R. Buck Thank you for your response :) I like meeting and talking with people who have a different point of view than I do. The creationists I've met wanted to talk to me about our Patagonian cavy, Chili Pepper. They asked if he could breed with a mouse and I said he could not because, even though both were rodents, they were different species. They countered that because they were the same "kind" of animal, that they could indeed breed. At this juncture, we could no longer continue our discussion on the matter because our opinions were directly opposing. My understanding of the fact that scientifically Patagonian cavies and mice cannot breed could not be reconciled with their belief in how Kinds of animals functioned. This is my only direct interaction with creationists, which definitely shouldn't represent all of you. I apologize if I've offended you and I'm interested in learning more about how science fits into your religion. Again, thank you for engaging and sharing your view.

    • @WaltRBuck
      @WaltRBuck 7 років тому +5

      My favorite word is probably "interesting", but I find this, in fact, interesting. Mostly because of the severe lack of understanding on the part of those particular creationists.
      I think, the thing here is simply the fact that they cannot interbreed. The flaw in their thinking was that they should be able to. The point that they need to understand is simply that they cannot. Then we can move onto bigger things like why they cannot. Through evolution it might be explained that over a period of time, what was the same group of animals, evolved differences through survival of the fittest due to environment or what have you. It simply might have been mutation(s) that, once perpetuated, caused a separate evolutionary path.
      Creationists might explain it by simply saying that God created two separate species that while close, are indeed different with different purposes.
      I see one of two possibilities here from their point of view, and one of them disappoints me a little, the other a lot. First, they might have just not had an appreciable understanding that the two species simply cannot interbreed and were arguing a misconception. Second, which disappoints me a lot, is that they were using a pointless argument to try to push their own point with some degree of force. In other words they were acting a little .. zealous instead of trying to meaningfully share ideas and beliefs. This almost never works.
      Why do these two things upset me? Pushing ignorance with no intent of having an open mind just makes a person look bad. Pushing a belief instead of sharing it makes that whole group look bad. I hope that neither of these were the intent on their part, but it seems just like the latter.
      As far as you are concerned, I found absolutely no offense in anything that was said. I think you come across in a very professional and learned manner. I deeply respect anyone that takes the time to question, learn, question that, and learn more, rather than hear something and assume.
      Sorry this is so long. I'm wordy. Lol
      PS I'd love to share with you more about my views and ideas about how science and religion work together. Is it alright to send it through a comment on your page, or through an email maybe? I'd prefer to leave less of my personal life on youtube. Lol

    Hi Jessi! I just wondered, how do you keep different animals with different diets but who still live in the same enclosure from eating each others food? For example Kizmit, who doesn't have the same diet as Chili Pepper and the guinea pigs.

    I know it may be a lot to ask, but I was wondering if you can eventually upload videos twice a week. I love learning about animals as well as many others. And I'm sure it will help your channel grow and flourish even quicker. Once your channel grows even more you will have more opportunities to make money to go towards caring for the animals. It's something to think about :)

      I think the reason there aren't more videos is because Animal Wonders is so small, and like she says in the video, a lot of the responsibilities fall on her when caring for the animals. Making more videos means time away from certain duties with the animals while filming and editing. I could see it being a possibility if Animal Wonders grew enough to have more full-time staff. Of course, to do that, they would have to have the money to do so, which is where Patreon comes in. :)

      Greg Bashaw I've thought about this so many times! There are so many things I want to talk about and so many animals to update you on, but I just don't have the time right now. Like +Yxaj said perfectly, if we are able to afford more help with the animal's basic care I'd have more free time to continue researching and writing scripts, filming episodes, and fulfilling Patreon rewards. Right now I'm split between the 80+ animals, being a mother, our public presentations (175 total in 2016! which brings in most our funding), and all the pieces of running a small business. Going to twice a week videos is definitely on my mind though!

      Hiring someone requires more money, which might not be something they have in surplus.
