I met my first and ONLY porcupine on my first visit out west. I was walking down a quiet back road in the Tetons( residential) and this “fuzzy” cute little animal kind of wabbled out of the woods. It walked towards me and stopped. I talked to it. It was adorable and was shocked to realize omg that is a PORCUPINE!!! I was calm- it was calm looked at me and wandered on back into the forest. Gorgeous super cute but I will give them space if that happens again. If I’m so lucky.
Most porcupines I have come agree just waddle along pretty slowly. However, I once saw a porcupine running toward a culvert when a dog was barking. I was pretty impressed with the speed and it was a lot more than 3mph!
Spiny tree beaver:-). They are one of my favorite critters to see when I visit states like Michigan, Minnesota, Mountain states, etc. They are adorable, and fun to appreciate from a distance.
They absolutely are intelligent. From the wiki: Consequently, the porcupine has "an extraordinary ability to learn complex mazes and to remember them as much as a hundred days afterward"
Man. What a nice educational video did I just see? I love it!. English is my third language, so I was very suspicious about you saying nocturnal, but couldn't do anything but trust you😹
Important Correction: Nocturnal means that animals are active during the night and sleep during the day. Diurnal would mean they are active during the day and sleept nights. Please ensure you have the facts right before teaching kids and unaware adults alike something false. Adding a corrective note at the relevant point in the video would also be helpful. As hardly anyone, especially kids, bother reading video descriptions.
One predator of the porcupine you forgot is the Fisher. They can turn porcupines upside down and kill them on the stomach where there are no quills. Porcupines like to eat rubber. There's a photo of a trailhead in Canada where all the parked cars have chicken wire surrounding the cars so while the occupants are hiking the Porcupines can't eat the tires.
They're just SO cute. What's crazy ... is that mountain lions apparently predate on NA Porcupines. Can you imagine how freaking DANGEROUS that has to be !?? Whoa.
I got too many suprises watching this ngl. First, the 30 000 quills note under the shirt. And the power move u did, sticking the quills onto ur palm just as u said abt how painful it is to pull out, like woah Edit: theres a lot more. But this one is my favorite.
Hang out with him! Just kidding. I would find plants that are native to the area that porcupines like eating, then lead him outside with them, literally like a trail of breadcrumbs, if you don't want him coming back, yell and stomp to freak him out, and he wont bother you. There could be several reasons why they are coming into your home. If it's a baby, please call a wildlife rescue. If it's an adult, he may just have been attracted to salts humans and our food give off. They don't run fast and pose no mortal threat. No need to call pest control or government officials if it's only happening once or extremely rarely.
Porcupines don't shoot their quills, but they do lunge backwards at you if you get to close. Do you really think a dog would bury it's face inches deep into a wall of quills? No, the dog got it's face close to sniff, and then the porcupine lunged backwards into the dog's face. A porcupine was walking down the middle of a dirt road near my house, so I had to ride my ATC around it. When I got about two or three feet away from it, it lunged backwards at my ATC, so I have some personal experience. Also, thanks to your video, I would also never know that porcupines are actually rodents.
What would you recommend as a couple the best foods to tempt a porcupine into a Have-A-Heart trap? I have a problem porcupine on my property that has already given my dog a face full of quills. If you have to get a vet involved removal of quills can be $500,--1000. I would like to relocate the culprit. Thanks for any suggestions.
hmm, Fruit is awesome, vegetables, thimbleberry leaves.... just be careful to not leave too much out for too long, their stomachs can be sensitive after a lot of sugar.
Oh I thought they shoot them ! My brother asked how to pet them and I said go from the top of the head and go backwards slowly and repeat that to prevent sticking himself 👀 also I told him that approaching one is best from the front so they can see you rather the back then touching them cause they'll stick you if they cannot see you
Nice porcupine
Nocturnal means the sleep in the DAYTIME and they’re active at night.
And dinural would be the opposite! That’s what us humans tend to do. On the topic… look into biphasic sleep in humans!
Yes, Sorry! I had to do this in one take, and I messed up that part. I made corrections in the description.
@@progenitor_amborellainteresting! Thanks dawg.
I was about to say
3am-4am is when I see them during fall
Anthony--You're an enthusiastic and informative presenter. Nice work.
thank you very much Gayle!
They don't shoot?🙄
@@Nigstesaba not unless you give them a gun
The sound the camera guy makes now and then is so nice it's calming. I wish i could hear him talking.

Porcupines have always been that one animal that i just want to hug and cuddle with em but i’d get quilled so badly if i did

"Nocturnal" does not mean that he sleeps during the night.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha Yeah, I did this all in one take so I had a little mishap. My bad!
Lol
Something about this video just makes me so happy and relaxed. Thank you for this!
Hey I appreciate that! thanks!
Great presentation… thank you … very knowledgeable. I liked the cameraman’s giggles.
IF YOU REALLY LOVED HIM , YOU WOULD HAVE HUGGED HIM ! I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU .. !
I had no idea that they could swim. I would like to see that.
You said nocturnal but then that they sleep at night?
Yeah Whoops. In the description I corrected it. They're Nocturnal. Brain fart.
Thistle be like: "Y'all needa switch to decaf, brah..."
“Look at all those chickens” I miss being at Pali institute
Jajaja I love that meme

Nocturnal means to sleep in the day not at night

Thank you Sticky Fingers. I will take the note and try to add an in-video annotation
UA-cam algorithm mistreated this guy!
Wow this dude is like really into porcupines
They’re so cute.
We have one living near our home and have had a neighbors dog get attacked.
Not sure if I should let him be or try to remove him.
These animals got tired of being pedded so much much that they had to put a stop to it. Very clever, it's not fair though.

don't diurnal critters sleep at night?
Porcupine, k8kw in abenaki language, these are absolutely delicious especially in winter, one of my favorite meats.
Doesn't nocturnal mean that they sleep during the daytime and roam at nights??
As a ct wildlife rehabber I'm interested In rescuing them. Thanks
it is so cute
Nocturnal means sleeps during the day, active at night....
That was awesome!!!!
Imagine going through life not being able to hug or embrace.
Porcupine Bizzes, bizzes are everywhere Man
I enjoyed this so much!
I love Thistle!
We gonna talk about how cute this guy is?
Thank you!!!
Well apparently they are not easily startled. That's what I learned.

That is awesome to hear, I aim to please, but mainly to surprise! hah
why didn't you pet it?
Thanks buddy what do I do if he’s coming in my home

You mean to tell me they made it from Africa to South America to North America walking at 3 miles per hour??
Very informative. Thanks a lot

also salty stuff!
I use apple with salt and apple cider vinegar to trap them. I like to eat them, especially in winter when they taste best.
Diurnal porcupines can climb apple trees
THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟❤️🖤💚🤎 FAMILY DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜,
Ha, this is great. Well done, sir. You should make more animal videos.

The Beaver’s more rigid and less productive cousin
❤
Nocturnal = Sleep at night? 🤔🤣
Well. I just caught one. And he flipped thAt tail hard as hell
Nocturnal means they are up at night duh
Nocturnal means that porcupines are up at night and sleep during the day, you got it backwards.
anthony is so handsome
The lecture is assuming that the watchers are complete idiots: he posts Post-Its on a blackboard.
Fun fact: you can sometimes poop porcupines out 😂

K9 don't have sharp claws.
