Volkswagen Arteon (ENG) - First Test Drive and Review

  • Volkswagen Arteon is a successor to Passat CC, later know as just CC. Ford offers Vignale trim for some of its models, Skoda has top of the line Laurin & Klement trims, and Volkswagen has a separate model above the Passat.
    If at first Volkswagen Arteon looks a bit like Audi A5 Sportback to you, you’re on the right track. I also thought about A5, but Arteon is bigger, and slots between A5 and A7. Compared to Passat Limousine it is around 10 cm longer, 4 cm wider, and has 4 cm longer wheelbase. And of course it is larger, than Volkswagen CC it replaces.
    Volkswagen Arteon is packed full of most recent versions of safety systems and driver aids, including Pre-Crash Protection System, Adaptive Cruise Control with traffic sign and route recognition, and Emergency Assist.

    Its a nice car,i visited in the local dealer, it had the R-line trim level what a beautiful car and yes the interior had that premium feel, i drove allot of bmw's and audi's but this one is something special that i like

    I know it's just an evolution of the cc in a new platform, but that name they could have chosen something better don't ask me why but it kind of reminds me of the second gen serrocco, from a certain point of view so why don't they use the sirocco gtx name

    • @MarekDrives

      What is the ultra advanced 1.5 engine? Sounds like the 1.5 TSI I had in the Golf.

    • @jh5kl
      @jh5kl 7 років тому

      its the 1.5 evo, it has cylinder deactivation (please remember we are talking about the ibiza segment), all aluminium block and variable geometry turbo! (not even all sport cars have that),again, please remember we are talking about ibiza segment and at seat prices. it is indeed the one in the last golf facelift

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому

      OK, AFAIK this engine isn't in mass production yet. Golf, Arteon, etc. will get this engine in Q4 2017. I expect it's similar case with the Ibiza, Polo (launch tomorrow), etc.
      So proper reviews of cars with these engines will start late this year/early next year.

    • @jh5kl
      @jh5kl 7 років тому

      true, but reviews on this 1.5 evo engine have been made because the car has already been available for press reviews (maybe only on some countries?). or even if it is in another engine it would be cool to see your video on the new ibiza, though this a really good engine

      Greg Sullivan one of the Chinese manufacturers MAY do something like that but no mainstream or prestige brand would dare bring out a low-tech high-end product, it goes against the way car production is going and would in fact cheapen the brand.

    I think it is a beautiful car, especially for a VW, but it is a bit too pricey. I will be curious to see what kind of incentives are offered after one year on the market. I think VW could have sold many of these had they offered it a lower price, but at this price it will remain a niche vehicle and be populare as a company car in Germany. I also think this body would be great on an EV, perhaps in 3 years...

    • @MarekDrives

    I heard in US we'll get a stripped down version of the Arteon, meaning options such as adding 20" wheel will not be available, no DSG transmission, it may not have the LED headlight just like the US version of a Passat and the base price will start around $39,000 I was going to trade my CC for the Arteon but after I heard the bad new, I will not wait for it. I'd rather spend little extra and get the Audi A4 or the Mercedes C class. 👎

      It looses the same percentage. It's more money simply because it's more expensive.

    • @Oherdom

    • @sic22l

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому +1

      From the perspective of an ordinary car buyer, yes. But here's a story of my friend, who was mid-management, and worked in a certain German company. This was about 10 years ago.
      The company had a deal with VW, so all company cars were either Polo, Golf or Passat. The type of car depended on how many years one worked for the company, and what was his/her position. She worked long enough to drive a Passat, but since her boss drove a Passat, she could only get a Golf. Internal petty politics. With the CC (now Arteon) on the market, she could drive a Passat, her boss could drive a CC/Arteon, and everyone would be happy :)

    A nice looking car on the outside, on the inside however nothing special really. For that price tag I would like to see more wooden and leather elements, especially in the dashboard area. However that seems to be a general trend in cars nowadays, less luxury and more tech and gimmicks.

      Martin Alexander WOOD?!? Bloody hell, perhaps we should also fit it with a carriage clock and a rocking chair! The Arteon isn’t the sort of vehicle where the buyers would need a wood trim, it’s not 1982, nor is it a Bentley ;)

      @@Tallandcharming that was Gold:) I have a MY18 Arteon and i love it, I used to have a 2012 Audi A6 complete with Wooden Trim and beautiful centre console although alas, no carriage clock.
      I'm now loving the Arteon R Line, it drives great with more power than i can use, the lines of the vehicle are outstanding and the inside is of great quality especially the tech but I do understand some people are looking for more of a Wow factor when opening the door. I love the Active Display Dash and the quality of the trim but would have liked a little more attention around the centre console, at least around the storage of mobile phones

      Craig Stephens great choice of car, ahhh yes the “wireless phone charger slot”, Shane they hadn’t thought to measure pretty much any modern smart phone before that genius move! People get so upset saying “it’s the same dash as a Passat”, funny as my BMW 4 AND 5 series shared their dash style with pretty much every other BMW of the time. The Arteon isn’t a stand-alone model pretending to be of a higher class than the rest of the VW line up, it’s simply a range-topper model with the all new VW design template so perhaps VW have outdone themselves if Joe Public is confused as to the role of the Arteon 👍 ps look up “Racechip”, I’ve had mine done and it’s now 335HP, bloody awesome!

      Because you think VW developed the Arteon in less than 2 years....
      Vw are known for their distinctive if not conservative designs in general. Renault on the other hand are known to copy designs from everywhere (they even made a documentary about it), just look at their cars and you'll realise that they try to completely change the design each generation, while some may think it's good, car people find it that Renault has no personality and design identity, which is understandable considering their market target, Renaults are like the old disposable cameras, they're not something you want to keep as soul car, and each generation they need a new design because people wouldn't buy them for something else, because if you dig a bit they're just Dacias with shinny plastic chromed bits.

      Not a bad idea actually. There was at some stage an idea to use entire car windscreen for augmented reality. This would give the driven an opportunity to see the menu based on a diner billboard the car passed. This of course means the driver is not paying any attention to the road, so we have to wait for autonomous cars :)

    Volkswagens and Audis with the turbo four cylinder engines aren’t very reliable. My 2008 Passat only has 74k miles on it and already and I’ve had to replace the right transaxle, the sway bars and recently a turbo part. Not cheap repairs! At 55k miles it had a oil pump leak! I will not buy another Volkswagen! I don’t see new ones on the road and I never see anyone in the showroom at the dealer! Well, I do see a few SUVs but no cars! The new Arteon is probably a expensive piece of junk! Wait and see how they hold up before you buy a Passat or Arteon if you must have one!

    No rear wipe/wash. Big fail! Inexcusable. No how shallow the window rake and how the air flow prevents road dirt settling on the glass, it still needs clearing, say after being parked, for adequate visibility and safety. What were they thinking? That nobody would notice such a serious omission?
    Alongside poor door mirror visibility and design, I'll pass on this car thanks VW.

    • @fulllietuvostv

      I have my BMW 3GT- no rear wiper either. Never missed it for 3 years driving.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому +1

      This is close to a sedan body shape. Sedans usually don't get rear wipers.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 7 років тому

      Marek Drives
      No excuse. It is a hatch and even if it was a sedan, if you use your interior mirror for safety's sake, you really do need clean wiped rear window. Some people never use their mirrors, but that is hardly relevant or an excuse for depriving the majority of a clear rear view, especially if, as you say, the door mirrors are so poor. This isn't a blind van for goodness' sake! Even if you ignore the price point, if the old Ford Orion sedan was worthy of a rear wiper, which it was, then this thing should certainly provide it.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому +1

      +Huw Williams Orion with a rear window wiper... yes, I wonder why that never caught on. And I'm sure you also recall Peugeot 406 Coupe. That also had a rear wiper, for reasons which elude me.
      In a regular hatchback the reason for a rear wiper is obvious. There is enough turbulence behind the car that some of the (dirty) water settles on the rear window, and that needs to be cleaned. Fair enough. However in a sedan body shape the water doesn't travel that far up the window, and at higher speeds it usually nicely blown off by the wind. The Arteon has a rather high boot, so I don't suspect this is going to be a problem.
      An interesting example I have is Toyota C-HR. It's the last car I would expect to have good aero in the back, but it does. Over 500 km in snow and rain I never used the rear wiper, because wind would clear dirty water, before it settled. I was quite surprised.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 7 років тому

      Marek Drives
      Hmm! I've run many cars over the years and only those sedans with windows coated by me with RainX really kept clean for more than a few days. The problem is at its worse after a few days and the car has been parked, around town for instance, where air flow doesn't clear the water and dirt and/or dust residue off the glass.
      I would not even consider a car without rear window wash/wipe on it any more than I'd consider one without front wipers. Not even if it had a Rolls Royce badge.

      G Rodriguez I’m not sure if you’ve ever driven or sat in a modern car before but perhaps before spouting verbal diarrhoea on the interwebs you may wish to understand that the “panel gap” you refer to is in fact the void that you’d see on ANY vehicle which has a height adjustable steering column. It’s also not actually a gap at all, it is filled with a flexi-plastic material (just like every other premium car).

      I suggest you try something before you talk about it like you made it, because I have a 2004 Golf mk5 1.9 TDI with over 370.000 km and was remapped at about 100.000km to 145hp and 330nm from 105hp and 250nm. I had it since the day it came out and It never fail in any way or left on the side of the road and it still drives like new , I'm a network security engineer but also a petrolhead, so I do all the maintenance myself and other than General maintenance parts like timing belt, water pump (changed it just because it comes with the timing belt kit) some rotors etc... it never had a single failure.
      And on the electronics side, I had it with more options than most modern cars, I'm talking about stuff like adaptive dampers, adaptive xenon headlights (the ones that maintains a constant height automatically even when going over bumps and potholes), night sensing headlights, automatic whippers, malfunction steering wheel with fully adjustable position on 4 axes, full multifonction cluster display, touch screen multimedia display, Bi-zone climatronic going to the back passagers too, parking assist with sensors and camera, fully electric and heated leather seats, seat belts with pretensioners, auto dimming central mirror, electric and heated side mirrors with LED turn signals, tire pressure monitoring, ESP, ABS, ASR, 10 airbags and even more stuff I didn't even realise existed in my car until lately.
      And guess what none of those features failed in any way.
      Kia is catching up but it will never have the expertise of an old brand classed first in the world until now, you can tell just by the fact the golf had aluminium parts in the chassis, multi-link suspension and all those features and more in 2004.
      People nowadays are buying cars based on looks and cheapness, of course Kia will sell more cars by now but that doesn't make it better than VW in any way. It may comfort you that you could afford the house thanks to the Kia's cheapness, but let's be honest if you could afford better you wouldn't buy a Kia.
      Maybe you have the Us spec VWs in Australia because they're crap and maybe that's the source of your problems of maybe just because they're more complex than the Kias which will eventually lead to more failures, and that's a good thing for Kia if you only need 4 wheels and doors.
      Please don't take anything of what I said offensively I'm just defending a case here, and in the end if you're satisfied with your car nothing of what I say matters to you.
