18000 Horsemen in total, lead by 3000 polish winged Hussars. Largest Cavalry Charge in known history. fun fact: they say that the german and austrian footsoliders stopped fighting and simply watched the charge. So damn impressive it was.
I know this is late, but frankly...wouldn't you? heck, if something like that happened today, we'd be seeing drone-cam footage on the internet *minutes* after the drone got back, if not sooner.
It's actually nonsense. In reality the German soldiers were the ones who followed the fleeing Turks and killed a lot of them, too. And the Germans were the ones who said let's follow them until we get their leaders, but no one else wanted to follow. Read the battle story... it's pretty long but very, very interesting. Itwas actually a 100% cooperation of the Polish and the Germans back then.
One of my favorite things about Sabaton songs is one minute you're headbanging and the next you feel like you need to stand and either put your hand on your heart or salute the flag of whatever country the song is about.
Quick history note: the liberation army that fought for liberation of Vienna numbered about 65 000 soldiers and there were roughly 16 000 defenders left in the city. The 3 000 polish heavy cavalry, called the winged hussars because of the wings mounted on their saddles, managed to break the ottoman line during the battle with their now famous charge that carried them all the way into the ottoman camp. A swift victory was vital, because Vienna had run out of food and supplies and would have been forced to surrender the very next day. What was unique about the winged hussars was not just their uniform, but also that they carried pistols aswell as lances. This meant they could form a firing line similar to infantry after breaking through enemy lines in a charge. Small fun fact: the polish king Sobieski had delayed the march to Vienna for a few days to be present at his sons birth

I went with mij 12 year old son to Sabaton in Amsterdam. It was his first show he ever seen. Now he is playing only Sabaton songs on his guitar. A fan was born for life🤘🤘
The seige of Vienna was indeed an epic battle but the numbers are FAR more impressive. An army of 150000 to 170000 beseiged the city of Vienna which had a garrison of only 11000 soldiers and some 5000 volunteers. The plan was to hold the city until the combined armies of the holy league, The Holy Roman Empire(Germany) and Poland could relieve the city. Those 16000 soldiers fought very bravely. Holding the walls against all odds, including thwarting mining operations where the Ottomans placed explosives under the city walls. 12000 of the cities defenders were wounded or slain in the battle. Even as the combined army of the holy league arrived the Ottomans formed a line to hold off the relief force and ever more desperately assaulted the city walls so they could use the fortifications against the would be rescuers. But then... the winged hussars arrived! The king of Poland beign a veteran of many wars had been elected to lead the army and as the German and Polish infantry engaged the Ottomans the combined Polish and German , led by the king himself, charged down the mountainside. It is to this day the largest cavalry charge in recorded history. 3000 Winged hussars back up by 15000 German lancers charged the demoralized and tired Ottoman lines. The defenders of the city even sallied forth in a counter attack and the Ottoman army crumbled and fled the field.
Well, the Polish winged Hussars did arrive just in time and holy fucking hell did they make a difference. They even laid defeated the great Sweden forward movement which... Is quite a feat for the time. No one else ever made a dent, not the Russians, not the Finns, not the Germans, but the Polish winged Hussars held the line. BAM and decimated the troops in a week.
3000 were a spearhead of the coalition. The last shock cavalry of Europe. There were other units of cavalryman and infantry in that battle. Winged hussars had experience with war against Ottoman in the east of P-L Commonwealth. It wasn't a single charge, but Ottomans were rauted and their camp was taken. There were few factors that added up and the victory was easier. At that point Ottomans was shortly after the lost war with Commonwealth on terrain of todays Ukraine, and were generally in cease fire period.
It was 3000 winged hussars at the head of 15000 other allied cavalry, and there was an additional, estimated, 50,000 other troops made up of infantry and artillery.
The Hussars were Polish cavalry . The wings were from the actual wings they fashioned to the back of their battle uniforms. The song lyrics include "Death from Above". which is the battle motto of the US Army air assault divisions . We're still making the enemy bleed. 101st ARBN. DIV USA. '
Love when you do the Sabaton songs because you feel the song and your energy is contagious. Hope to see more and that you one day get to see the band live.
Eleven years ago, one of the biggest Heavy Metal concerts was held in Poland -Woodstock 2012. I'm curious about your reaction to some songs: Ghost Division, Uprising, Cliffs of Galipoli, White Death, 40:1, Carolus Rex.... and other :D Greetings from Poland ;)
Formerly known as the Lithuanian commonwealth which was a polish,Lithuanian & others i believe it was the biggest cavalry in history comprised of 20,000 on horseback
Polish Winged Hussars were the best heavy cavalry in history. Literally no enemy ever managed to stop them once they gained momentum. There is only one man who managed to win against Winged Hussars: Zenobi Chmielnicki, leader of Cossack army. And he did so by preventing The Hussars from gaining momentum in the first place. All who allowed The Hussars to gain momentum and attack - were defeated as a result. Usually in a crushing manner. ALSO the Polish army actually was told to go away soon after the battle was won. The king of Austria refused to give the Poles any credit. It was so bad that reportedly the king Jan III Sobieski have told his soldiers that he actually would let the enemy massacre the city if he knew what kind of thanks he will see after the fact.

It's crazy how a bad day turns 180 when I watch You react to good music. 🙃I just love Your engagement and emotion in every song that You really like. THANKS for savig my day! Tonight I'll have an even better day/night as I'm going to see Nightwish live in Stockholm tonight! Should I give Floor a shoutout from You?
I would like to spread the word, Sabaton is "Valor Metal". I wonder if the scene in LotR: The Two Towers, Gandalf arrives at dawn at Helm's Deep with the Rohirrim, was inspired by this battle?
Possibly, but the King of Rohan arriving with his army to break the siege of the White City and that charge down the hill into the ork army is virtually a recreation of the charge of the Winged Hussars at the Siege of Vienna.
I'm surprised you haven't done Lion from the North (English or Swedish version) yet... You want to put that hair to good use as a windmill, that song should do it.
This song is very dear to my heart and as you I get goosebumps everytime I listen to this song especially when the chorus kicks in. An interesting fact, had the Ottoman Empire succeeded in their siege of Vienna, they would've gained important trade routes throughout europe since Vienna at the time was a very big hub for trade, it would've further expanded Islam into europe and I bet all our lives would look very different now.
Islam expanded into Europe anyway much later.. Irony of fate - Turkey was the only country which didn't recognize partitions of Poland in the XIXth century..😏
I really recommend listening to Sabaton "Shotgun" it's a little bit different than all other sabaton songs but it's really good, at least in my opinion :)
Winged hussars were pretty bad ass but it was mainly the fact the ottomans got over confident that no one was coming to aid them in the time allowed unfortunately for them they wanted to siege instead of assault if they assaulted the walls immediately they would have won lost a lot of men but that was never the issues for them but the commander wanted the city mostly intact and the riches to be his instead of looted by his army and the ottomans had less guns as well they almost won anyway by blowing up the walls but the polish and other troops arrived just in time many mercenaries as well
yeah they weren't deployed to resist a flank utter arrogance by their commander and you don't tend to bring heavy cav to a siege yourself if they hadn't been in such a rush and had deployed properly the polish heavy cav and their support wouldn't have won the day hurt them oh yeah but compared to the city no they would have taken it might have taken longer but still would have been faster than the other armies gathering to fight them.
The Winged Hussars were a Polish Shock troop calvary unit, who would arrive onto the battlefield and cavalry charge into the enemy lines. This song talks about how the city of Vienna held off the siege from the Ottoman Empire, long enough for the Winged Hussars to arrive and break the Ottoman siege and rout them completely from the area.
Yes, but Vienna was saved not by Polish, but by Hungarian winged hussars. The very first winged hussars appeared in Hungary. Then the Poles took it to themselves
