The Hussars were one of the most disciplined units of cavalry in history to the point where you cant even depict it accurately in movies, because horses arent trained to ride as close in formation as they were back then. Hussars were typically noble sons and therefor equipped with the best possible weapons and training, elite both in status and in importance, and their horses were bred specifically to be THE best war horses possible. Both the horse and the rider were very important and therefor protected by the best heavy armor possible. The tactics they used were to charge in massive formations, just pounding the enemy with their large lances and riding them down in high speed. The drawback of course was that these troops were very expensive, but since it was such a high honor to be a hussar, they paid for their horses and equipment themselves, the only reason they were able to do so was because they were noblemen. That's why they sing "an army of kings" in the song, a lot of these guys had royal blood.
Most diciplined units of cavalry in history? they made 1 great attack the west remembers, thats about it.
and about horses not trained to run in formations? wtf had the whole of europe nobility, wich was BASED on heavy cavalry charges since the Norman conquest of england been doing?.
and i cant really find sources for horses having heavy armour to protect them, do give me sources if im wrong tough. the riders had ofc, cause they where nobles.
the tactics where the basic shock and awe tactics of old, break the enemies most important line and break morale, wich they did splendidly. the Phalanx of ancient greece was based on that.

@@LaserSeQ in Battle of Lubieszów around 1 500 polish hussars with assist around 1 000 polish musketeers perish sweden invasion forces in 10 000 strenght with only one charge, in Battle of Kircholm around 2 100 hussars with assist 500 light cavalry and 1 000 musketers crush sweden forces around 11 000 strenght, and in another battle (Battle of Klushino) 5 500 hussars and 1 000 musketers crush russian and sweden forces around 35 000 strenght, but yes, polish hussars is only nobleman with no achivements... learn some history and then tell something about this, this happened in era, when knigh doesn't exist ( from 16th to 18th century), because firearms spread across entire europe

This is a song about the greatest cavalry charge in the history of mankind. according to various sources, between 150 and 300 thousand Turks besieged Vienna. The "Holy League", i.e. the alliance of Christian states, had a total of about 50,000 army, and the decisive attack was the attack of John III Sobieski at the head of 15,000 horsemen and 3,000 winged hussars. It was one of the last battles of the Polish hussars, which two centuries ago won all the nominated battles, often with a huge numerical advantage of the opponent.

The Siege of Vienna was also the Inspiration for the Battle of Helms Deep in Lord of the Rings

@@divicospower9112 I'd say both cities. Each city pulls something from the battle of Vienna. Helms Deep has the walls being exploded and coming over the mountain. Minas Thirith you get that standard cavalry charge and the repeated strikes through terrified infantry ranks.

To answer some of your questions;
1. 3,000 Winged Hussars lead by the King of Poland (leading 18,000 total cavalry) vs 150,000 Ottomans & 40,000 Transylvanians.
2. Lances were their weapons of penetration, but they were masters of sword, mace, and club as well.
3. They remain to this day one of the most disciplined military units to ever exist.
4. We study their tactics and movements, especially that they were able to cross hostile territory efficiently and without a single casuality on their way to liberate Vienna and ultimately preventing the Ottomans from ever taking over Europe, to this day in the Marine Corps & I believe other branches do as well.
They also used one use pistols and ive read some records that some hussars carried some kind of grappleshots or shotguns also one use.

Sabaton has mastered the art of simplicity and consistency. Fun fact this battle was the inspiration for the siege of Helm's Deep in LoTR. The Winged Hussars never lost a battle except to time due to the invention of howitzers and tanks, it's sad though how Europe repaid Poland for essentially preventing the Ottoman Empire from gaining a foothold in Europe hundreds of years later when the Nazis and Soviets occupated Poland and they fought to regain their freedom from both and no one came to aid. Sabaton does a fantastic job of giving respect to Poland, one of the toughest and scrappiest nations in all of Europe.
So like, I get what you're saying and agree with it all, but did you really say decades later to refer to a war that happened almost 400 years later?? 😂
You say that, but realistically, what could the Allies have done to help Poland? They were on the opposite side of Europe, it would have been remarkably hard to send material aid. And the Warsaw Uprising happened after the D-Day invasions had already landed, so it's not as if the Allies were sitting around doing nothing.

The winged hussars never Lost a battle? A quick Google search already showed me 6 battles they Lost from which one by the lion of the north.
Actually it was the Charge of the Rohirim at Minas Thirith ... as in the books there is no cavalry charge at Helms Deep ...
It's worth mentioning that the weapon the hussar has in the picture is a lance, not a spear. Lances were designed to channel all of the energy from a horse in full gallop into a single point, whereas spears were designed to just use the energy from the user's thrust. Also lances were usually a lot longer than spears.
The energy thing makes no sense, because the core design of "stick with stabby end" isn't nearly versatile enough for that to happen. The structural design differences of a lance vs a spear is that a lance is usually a lot lighter and differently balanced so they could be effectively controlled with a single hand permitting the other hand to control the reins of the horse. And that's really it; outside of tournament jousting you could consider a lance to be a very light pike with a bit more balance toward the butt.
Those lances were about 12feet long, hollow and designed to break off.
@@nancyjanzen5676 true but that was kind of the point with them aswell it was for the initial charge they knocked someone down or killed them ( if not killed he would be stomped to death by the horses) and after that its just drop the lance and use the other weapon at your disposal like swords maces clubs and some other which were very effective, plus lances made for a better attack onto a enemy cavalery ( if they were doing a counter charge which against hussars would be pretty dumb) and after that its the ground forcesthat get their heads bashed in or cut off

fyi it was a cavalry charge of 20 thousand, charging at an army of 150,000. there was also 80-90 thousand infantry, but the cavalry charge came first and broke the vast majority of the army. the infantry broke the janisaries that were already on the walls and attempting to break through. at the head of the 20 thousand cavalry was the 3000 winged hussars. each one of them far better then any other cavalry of the day. their lances alone are almost twice the length of an average hussar. and then u add their fighting skill, start of the art weaponry flintlock pistols and cavalry hit and run tactics, and goodbye ottoman empire

Another thing to be noted about the Winged Hussars is that the wings weren't for show only. Being made of metal they also made an ungodly amount of noise, probably frightening anything around not expecting it

Let me add a history fact. This was during the height of Ottoman empire which had it's borders close to italy and poland Controlling land which would later become greece, yugoslavia bulgaria and nearly hungary.
The ottomans sent an army of 100000-150000 men to lay siege of Vienna. Vienna is a great and strong fortress(one of the strongest in europe) but it had very few men of austria and the holy roman empire defending it. The relief comes in the form of King john III of poland to aid the holy roman empire and Austria with 3000 winged hussars, but with those winged hussars he had like 18000 other cavalry. Which makes it the largest cavalry charge in history.
Resulting in a win for the christian coalition, later the holy league.
If you have seen the movie LOTR with the famous rohan charge, imagine that but 2 or maybe 3 times bigger army of cavalry.

Imagine 3,000 heavy horse. Huge animals wearing their own armor. Astride these beasts are elite trained knights in full armor. A terrifyingly long Lance and Sabre at their sides. On their backs a wooden frame covered in white eagle feathers in the shape of wings.
3,000 armored winged beasts with every intent to kill you and trample you into the bloody mud. This was absolutely by design to scare the fucking shit out of the enemy.
I was born in Poland and grew up with these stories. The Polish cavalry is legendary. Casimir Pulaski trained George Washington's army and established the first cavalry in the US. Pulaski actually died fighting for American independence in a cavalry charge

I just gotta say I started listening to Sabaton 11 years ago when I was a young metalhead history buff growing up in a small town in Idaho... it was 8 years before I met another fan. I'm now really enjoying the reaction videos from you and multiple other content creators because it's really cool seeing so many different people from so many different backgrounds, nationalities, races, both genders , and all ages coming together and agreeing that listening to Sabaton is a kickass experience that leaves you both pumped up by the epic music and inspired by the great deeds of heros of the past.

Hi Dave, once again I love your reaction! You always get to the point. The quality of the Sabaton's music is always consistently good, and I can't think of a song that I don't like. I took a quick look to see if there are any official videos (not live videos) with less than 500,000 views. The only thing I noticed was Reign Of Terror, with 473,249 views. But as I said, of course I couldn't check them all. However, I don't think the number of views is important to me if I like the music!

The number of hussars is beeing argued till today. It's between 3 to 20 thousand but Ottoman forces were 160 thousands. Janis series were the sultans elite forces.
Their lances were the unique trick of engineering that gave the Winged Hussars the ability to outreach the Ottoman pikes as they charged. They had no choice but to come up with something like this, because breaking the Ottomans’ pike formation/s was the ONLY way they’d have any hope of winning the battle. And there’d be no breaking that pike formation without an overwhelming cavalry charge. There was, however, no VIABLE way to mount a cavalry charge like that and simultaneously justify the losses you would suffer vs. the extremely minimal gains you would have attained. If the Hussars’ lances couldn’t reach the pikemen on the Ottomans’ front lines before those pikes could reach them, but they mounted a cavalry charge anyway? The Hussars would have gotten skewered in droves with minimal losses on the Ottoman side - there’s no way to justify the risk-to-reward ratio of a move like that. You would need, as an ESSENTIAL, lances that could reach out and touch your enemy before their pikes are able to touch you. BUT, if these lances that could outreach the Ottoman pikes were made conventionally, then the shafts of these weapons would have been extremely long, thick, and HEAVY as HELL, because they were made of solid ash wood. In other words, these lances would be way too top-heavy and unwieldy for a mounted horseman to use while charging at the enemy. The Ottoman pikemans’ pikes were heavy like that, but those guys were also wielding the weapons on foot, in formation, holding them with both hands, and bracing them with their entire bodies. Then from there, all the Turks really had to do was wait for the enemy to fling themselves right onto the tips of their spears (or so they thought at the Battle of Vienna.)
Contrarily, a heavily armored man on a horse and wielding a lance has to articulate that weapon with one arm, hit relatively small targets while riding past them at high speeds and bounding up and down (because it’s a HORSE, not a motorcyle,) and while also worrying about dodging pike-tips while sinking his own lance tip into human flesh. All of this while riding straight towards them and attempting to stab them with something that feels as heavy as a TREE in his one hand and crook of the arm? Unh-uh. The Poles said, “we gotta figure something out with these lances.” So they DID.
They made the exact lance that was long enough to outreach the Ottoman pikes, but light enough to be wielded by a mounted cavalryman. And they did this by hollowing out the shafts of these lances and gluing/binding the two halves back together. The trade-off is the MASSIVE sacrifice of strength and structural integrity of the lance - but the GAIN made that trade-off A-OK to the Poles, because it was still JUST strong enough to penetrate the bodies and armor of two to three pikemen… and that’s all the Hussars would need to do in order to break the Ottoman’s pike formation so that they could then proceed to dismantle the entire formation. If their lances broke after skewering, say, two to four Ottomans, then it would have been peachy at that point because they were IN now. All they gotta do is discard their now-broken (but intentionally disposable) lances and start taking heads off from atop their horses with their sabers. If their horses fell, they’d fight on foot with their sabers, maces, etc.
And hey, haters out on the inter-waves can talk shit on Poland all they want. They may not have the most illustrious track record of winning wars, but their victory in THIS battle is most likely the main reason that everyone in Europe isn’t speaking ‘Euro-Arabic’ right now. That alone, to me, is more than worthy of being sung about hundreds of years after the fact.
The winged hussars where so success full partly becouse of their overly long lances they could be up to 6 meters long! Whoch is much longer than a knights lance whoch is only 2.5 meters long and why they are so short is becouse of their weight while the winged hussars lances where hollow to make them lighter yet they where hard to break. So theu could reach a knight much faster than the knight could reach them

Witness reports claim that both sides fired shells at weakened peaks in order to bury the other side under snow and gain advantage. This day went down in history as White Friday.

The importance of the winged hussars or more specifically this song was about how around this time period heavy Calvary was starting to become obsolete, the winged hussars in general costed a lot of money and recourses to upkeep so much so that the men riding on the horses weren’t getting any sort of payment for their victories in combat. However when the holy league was formed with the other countries in Europe the polish contribution to the war effort was the winged hussars on the promise that they would be able to loot the men they had slain in combat for valuable goods since they weren’t getting paid. So long story short this was arguably the last major victory achieved by any sort of heavy Calvary in history. This was an end of an era and they went out with a fucking bang. They didn’t all die in the conflict, but they just won the last major victory for that type of unit.

I really Love this song, such a vibe and I love the choir at the end of this song. About the bad songs, I don't know a bad song personally, but I can say sometimes some of Sabaton songs sound the same 🤔Also while you was talking about ''the worst song'' I instantly thought about Metallica because Metallica has a clear ''worst song'' which is St Anger. Trash can snare, awful production repetitive lyrics that don't make sense and just weird structure in general. But then I thought about this, Sabaton actually has a cover from Metallica, its the legendary song For Whom The Bell Tolls, they made an epic cover and I hope you'll check it out. Great Reaction

This charge of 3,000 Hussars plus 15,000 allied horsemen was the largest cavalry charge in the annals of world history. An Epic event is a gross understatement. Not only were their the cavalry, but 10's of thousands of foot soldiers, spearmen, arquebus units and cannon. The rods they attached to their armor was to prevent sword slashes from their blind spots and every feather were from eagles, hawks, falcons. All birds of prey.
Fun Fact: The Charge of the Hussars was so impressive that the Austrians from Vienna Stopped fighting to watch the Polish Hussars Charge down the Mountain!

They had special breed of horses - 1 horse was worth 1 village, they had 5-6m special lances hollow inside, special training from the youngest both horses and hussars
Heh, bringing up Magic The Gathering. I think it is relatable, because this battle was drenched in politics. I used to play a multiplayer Magic game every morning in high school. My favorite deck was a White deck of Benalish and Icatian. It gave no attack power, but i can tap to deal damage to an attacker or blocker. I can tap to give first strike. So i can interrupt the game politics anytime i want. Usually meant taking second place in a 5 player game, but 1st place would thank me for showing up and helping. Much like this battle. The credit went to the infantry. The King of Poland-Lithuiana knew he ended it, but did a boss move "Nah, y'all did the work"

This battle decided the fate of Europe. If Sobieski had not come to the rescue, the Turks would most likely have taken Rome and expelled Christianity from Europe.
According to captured documents, there were 170,000 Ottomans. This was reduced to 150,000 on the day of the charge. Presumably, the other 20,000 were guarding the long supply lines.
There were 16,000 garrison troops in Vienna. Another 65,000 troops followed in the relief force.
Without food and with their supply lines disrupted, the Ottoman force was forced to retreat with heavy losses. It had taken decades to prepare supplies for the attacking army, so this defeat wasn't something that could be turned around despite the Ottomans outnumbering the Viennese even after the defeat.
Had the West lost either this battle or the Battle of Lepanto (a naval battle), Europe would have been forced to convert to Islam.
The Winged Hussars used a secret technique to hollow out their lances allowing them to be lighter and much longer than most lances. They were longer than pikes and thus they were the only cavalry that could break pike formations. They dominated Eastern European combat.
"its a desperate race against the mine and a race against time" also earns explanation, one of the more common tactics of the era was to "Sap" an enemy fortress' walls, this was a strategy that was even practiced as far as WW1. Sappeurs or Sappers were combat engineers that often dug elaborate tunnels underneath the enemy's defenses which they would then fill with explosives or simply burn the supports out of in earlier eras.
In both cases you were literally creating a giant land-mine or sinkhole that the enemy's defenses would collapse into. It wasn't unheard of for defenders to actually counter-dig such things and it led to men fighting hand-to-hand with knives and clubs or pistols in WW1 in tunnels so narrow you often couldn't fully extend your arms in some places.
It is actually said that when The Winged Hussars charged the Ottoman Army near Vienna, all infantry ceased to fight and watched in awe, with jaws dropped to the ground.
That's how powerful of a sight it was.

I believe the wings also caused the enemies horses to freak a bit, while the Hussaria's horses were used to the sound, having trained while hearing the sound, and the sound might have served as a signal to the Hussaria horses to fall into line and sync their step with the other Hussaria horses. I believe the charge always was began with the horses lined abreast and walking in step, then gradually picking up speed as the Hussaria lowered their lances. Also, the pennants might have served as a distraction for the oppostiion, also. There is so much to learn from the Hussaria history.

It's probably too long, but you might want to view Sabaton at Hellfest 2019. There are two videos of this concert on you tube. Winged Hussars looks and sounds so cool at this festival, with a big horse and rider crossing the stage on the back screen. Also, this concert, where Tommy and Chris had to sing after Joakim lost his voice after Winged Hussars, this concert is mesmerizing to listen to. They have a chorus in WW1 uniforms, and the concert is some sort of magic.
They have an unofficial music video using clips about the Siege of Vienna that gives you an idea of the numbers and what the Ottomans and the besieged city were seeing with the charge (you don't have to do a reaction to it, just thought I'd let you know). *edit* Look for Knight SGC Archive.

The whole cavalry charge in itself was around 18 thousand cavalrymen, at this point still the largest cavalry charge in history.

Am I the only one who noticed the potential spiritual meaning to this song? The lyrics seem to be comparing the soldiers to angels. The Bible talks about how Elisha and his servant were surrounded by armies. The servant starts panicking and Elisha prays to the Lord to open his servant’s eyes. Suddenly they see angels all along the mountainside. In short, God protected them from the armies. When I hear this song I picture multitudes of angels arriving on the scene, especially when the lyrics say things like “armor and wings” and “death from above, it’s an army of kings”. Are we not kings and priests according to the Bible?

Its just a song about the winged hussars which have deco on their armor and come from the mountain thats why they sing death from above it has nothing absolut nothing to do with shit religion or the fucking bible
It was the largest charge in history. There were 18000 involved, but the Winged Hussars only numbered 3000. They however held the position of honor in the vangaurd. The frightening thing about the Hussars Charge is it started slow and disjointed, but as the horses reached full gallop, the Hussar ranks would tighten and become a charging solid mass of mounted warriors carrying 15' pikes at the enemy. Enemies would either break or be trampled.
Shortly after the battle, the defeated Ottoman General was ordered strangled with a silk rope by a group of Jannissaries for his failure. In the Ottoman Empire, failure was not an option.😉
