Have enjoyed watching your videos for a couple years now, and have especially enjoyed watching the evolution of the technique for your faux integral bolsters. This one looks especially robust, and very nice looking too.

Brilliant work. What kind of steel is in a truck spring (besides the obvious spring steel) and how do you avoid getting cracks whilst forging? What a great way to make a knife!

A beautiful piece. Great for display. I feel I should out that historians say Bowie's knife was believed to be nine to eleven inches long at most. This piece is far to large if that is true.

Freerk; question for you about your technique. I've seen several different smiths do different things when it comes to forming the point of the blade as well as the tang. Curious, when you hammer yours into shape, rather than hog it out with an angle grinder or belt grinder (for general shaping, not final form obviously) is it to maintain the structure of the material? Or is it just a personal preference?
I'm looking into starting small blade smithing myself, and I've seen many people using angle grinders with cut-off wheels to hog off/shape the tip and handle, and was wondering, is that -bad- for the material? or is it just a more 'personal preference for those that don't have access to an air hammer/time to hammer it all in manually?
Awesome work, you've inspired me to start collecting tools and follow a bit of a 'dream' of mine that I've had since I was 12. :D Cheers, from Canada!

Every bladesmith has his own recipe for making knives. I am a hobby bladesmith and almost every knife that i forge is hidden tang and forged completely to shape just to save steel. And as you said its personal preference. Some like the heating and beating, some like grinding.

Someone PLEASE explain to me how that slotted gaurd stays together. I know he welds two middle pieces between the gaurd /bolster but when he's shaping afterward I'm pretty sure he's ground through all of the weld. I want to forge my sister a knife but I want a gaurd and I don't want to do a hidden tang.
