"Deep Purple" was a very popular jazz song from the early 1930s; guitarist Ritchie Blackmore suggested that for a band name because it had been his grandma's favorite song.
the concept behind the band was to have a keyboard take the front in the way a lead guitar normally would thats why in so many of their songs it sounds like the guitar and keyboard are dueling
I grew up, back then, with Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Genesis, YES etc. This music will be the new classical music; most modern music you hear on mainstream radio won’t be remembered.
The band came together from a previous UK band called Roundabout in the mid-60's... In 1968, they decided to change the name. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore suggested the name 'Deep Purple' which was a song from 1930 - it happened to be his grandmother's favorite song. Alongside Blackmore (guitar) were Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums), Rod Evans (vocals) & Nick Simper (bass)... They recorded 3 albums and scored hits in America around 1968/ '69... In 1969, they decided to fire Evans and Simper and replaced them w/ Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass). This video was shot in 1970, when Deep Purple, inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, decided to relaunch themselves as a 'heavy rock' band w/ Ian Gillan on vocals... Their 5th record 'In rock' became a huge success in Europe... America would come around in 1972 after the 'Machine head' album and the live record 'Made in Japan'.
This is one of the few hard rock groups I enjoyed in the 60's-70's. My favorites are their covers of Joe South's "Hush" & Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman". Also like "Smoke On The Water", "Woman From Tokyo", "Highway Star", "Fireball", Speed King", "Space Truckin'", etc.
I saw Deep Purple in 1985 in Chicago, Perfect Strangers tour. Probably the loudest one I’ve been to. The paper next day said that “Ian Gillan can turn eardrums into a bloody pulp, and Ritchie Blackmore could level small villages with a single stroke of his guitar “.
The collective musicianship of this lineup is the greatest of the era and probably even today. I think "Deep Purple" was a favorite song of Ritchie Blackmore's (the guitarist) mother or grandmother or so I read. Love how you gave kudos to Jon Lord's organ playing. May he rest in peace. The crowd was directed to stay calm throughout.
During a brief tour of Denmark and Sweden in April, in which they were still billed as Roundabout, Blackmore suggested a new name: "Deep Purple", named after his grandmother's favorite song.
All of this lineup of deep purple were very talented! My my favorite song by them is called highway star and I really think you should check that 1 out!
Smoke on the Water is my favorite but anything Deep Purple does is great! I love that you really listen to these bands, their lyrics and music. Watched it all with you Adogg.
Hi ! i love the original studio song on Deep Purple in Rock Album ! The organ is the one most bands use because it s the best sounding organ of all times ! it s the Hammond B-3 and it s great to have a good look at it in this video !
This was great, thanks Adogg, glad you got locked in, Me too! Here are some others by them: "Highway Star" -the "Made in Japan" album version. "Space Truckin'" Original studio album version. "My Woman from Tokyo" original studio album version. "Burn" original album version. "You Keep On Moving" original album version. Enjoy!!
Imagine being 18 yrs old long hair , girls , a Yamaha RD350 listening to this 🙀 to be fair our modern day hifi systems are much better than anything I could afford back then
This band is one of the very best bands ever. There is no bad song by this band. Check them all out. PLEASE! i love your reaction. Another song I love is Rat Bat BLUE. check IT OUT. Ian Gillians VOCALS are off the chart on this one for sure. Every member of this band is as good as it gets. Ritchie Blackmore is one of the best guitarists ever. On keyboards is John Lord. R.I.P. and the man that formed this band.
The name 'Deep Purple' comes from a favourite song of lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's Granny . . the song talks about the deep purple shadows that herald the coming of the night.
72 yrs, DEEP PURPLE seeing them live during the late 1960s, and early "70s. You all missed it! What you hear now is weak. Think about that! Deep Purple is, was my favorite live show. Till Uriah Heep opened for them in 1972. Uriah Heep had folks running away from their music, into walls, people, seats, about anywhere but the doors. DP's second album; "Book of Talisman" is from 1968 or so.
I've said this many times before, as have others... I enjoy watching you react to new bands. Your love for all genres of music is SO fun to watch. That's why I will always watch and like every reaction you post.
Hey Adogg, Deep Purple is one of the founders of heavy metal music. They have a very extensive collection. Here's another song of "Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water (Live)" this is based on a true story, but I won't say anything more so as not to interfere with your reaction. Nice reaction, well done🔥🎸💖✌✌🎶
Very nice reaction, This is one of the best classic rock songs of all time lot's of history different lineups called the machs and forming band after Rainbow Whitesnake and on. Brun is another great song by Deep Purple.
They have so many great songs. Keep diving into their music...to many to name, and know others will give you suggestions. One of my favorite bands back in the day. I will suggest ( When a Blind man Cries. ) Awesome song if you like this one. They have alot of good rock songs also
If you do "When a Blind Man Cries" definitely do the original studio version -- far and away the best version of it. It's a mellow ballad -- not rock but still beautiful.
@@mickeyhank Absolutely. Live versions without Ritchie, the song loses the "feel" of the song. The guitar and voice work off each other to provide the emotion needed for the song.
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were known as the “Unholy” Trinity of hard rock. ADogg, Keyboard player, Jon Lord, primarily plays the Hammond B3 organ. The same organ played by Gregg Allman. Unfortunately, Jon and Gregg are no longer with us. The 70’srock bands you are reacting to are mostly World War 2. Babies; born within a year or two after the end of the war when all those soldiers returned home to England and the US. Many of the British musicians were formally trained in. Classical music and decided they wanted to rock out!
no back in the day the audience HAD to sit still and be quiet during filming i was there. ( in that era not this show) and youd be quickly removed if you got up and jumped around..
This is a great song by an amazing band, another one to check out the guitarist Richie Blackmore's work after deep purple he formed rainbow, with Ronnie James Dio. An amazing Duo with so much talent they were one of the bands that helped shape metal before anyone knew what metal was.
I always loved the crowd too, but I see terror in their faces, they look like a group of school kids with their teachers and parents, who were not prepared for the Purple.
There's a young group called Greta Van Fleet that has an old school rock vibe. They are 3 brothers and a childhood friend from MI . I think you may like them ....I recommend Heat Above, Age of Man , Stardust Chords. The vocalist is Josh Kiszka and his identical twin Jake on lead guitar. Younger brother Sam on bass and keyboards. Danny Wagner is the drummer.☮️💜🤘
The audience has never seen anything like this before and are unsure of how to react. They are basically in shock. It will take them time to digest what they had seen and to appreciate it.
Ian Gillan Was the voice on the original Jesus Christ Superstar album, not movie. He was the Jesus voice. Excellent. You should check it out. Also, as an aside, he is now 75-ish years old. Funny, huh?
How about a reaction to one of their contemporaries and the guitarist Deep Purple wanted to replace Ritchie Blackmore when he left? That would be the legendary Irish blues rock player Rory Gallagher. He loved the blues and played with the likes of Muddy Waters and Albert King. I highly recommend you check out "All Around Man" from the Old Grey Whistle Test video; "Do You Read Me" from Rock Goes to College" or "Shinkicker" from 1979 Montreux as a starting point for this artist's deep catalog. He was once counted among the best-right up there with Clapton, Beck, & Hendrix and is still revered by guitarists. He left us much too soon at the age of 47 in 1995 due to a MRSA infection.
First record I ever bought was "Black Knight" Deep Purple, second was "Paranoid" Black Sabbath. And so it began. 😂 Even all these years later this song is in my Top 5 Favourite songs with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (you should try Forestella's version of it.. 😲 👍). Chinese singer Hua Chenyu has two in my Top Five "Jackdaw Boy" and "Aliens".. but it changes as he covers every genre from Metal, Rock, Rap, Ballads, Broadway, Synth Pop, Pop, Chinese Reggae, to. Traditional Chinese, Peking Opera. Not in my "Top 50 Hua Chenyu Performances"... but "Nunchucks" is a good intro to his scope. You have to get beyond the piano intro to "get" what he's doing. 😂 ua-cam.com/video/lLs-0A0yEuA/v-deo.html

Ian gillan phenomenal singer . One of my favourites. Love deep purple. Gillan. Rainbow.
No auto tune, no special effects. Raw talent.
👍
Classic !! Anti-War... Gillan's wailing !! pure talent in Deep Purple !!
"Deep Purple" was a very popular jazz song from the early 1930s; guitarist Ritchie Blackmore suggested that for a band name because it had been his grandma's favorite song.

1970 one of the greatest rock songs of all times even today. It is written about the Vietnam war.
"In Rock". A PIONEER album, new sounds for that era, effects, solos, riffs, etc. etc. from top musicians. Huge influential for the following years

I love this, my favorite song of Deep Purple is Perfect strangers.

One of the best. Love Gillan’s voice!
The crowd? This is 52 years ago. They are stunned!! Such a proper acting crowd.
The BBC asked the crowd to be silent for the recording of this. They're being proper ❤

"Lazy" must be next. Can't stop foot tapping on that one! Also, my most favourite concert!
Burn!!
Burn, never before, alot of under rated songs.
"Lazy", from the album Machine Head. Probably their most fun song. 7 minutes of straight up groove!
Awesome to see a younger generation enjoy the music I listened to like fifty years ago as a school kid, thanks man.

Love love love Deep Purple. When my niece first learnt guitar at about 7yrs old, it was Smoke On The Water that was her fave. They are amazing 💕👏

Amazing vocal and musical POWER..nice reaction, and I agree, you are on a roll today,(everyday)
The singer, Ian Gillan, was Jesus in the original album version of Jesus Christ Superstar.
This was great, thanks Adogg, glad you got locked in, Me too! Here are some others by them: "Highway Star" -the "Made in Japan" album version. "Space Truckin'" Original studio album version. The studio version is good. But this live version is classic. Raw, in your face rock and roll.
‘Hush’ is a great song, a different lead singer. It’s an older song.
‘Highway Star’ is great too. Do the live performance.
Ian is the prototypical hard rock singer.
That was I think their best track, they have some other good ones but this one as you heard kicks some serious ass.
And to think three of them are still in the band and tour to this day.
Deep Purple was the favorite song of the guitarist mother.
Grandmother 😊
Can't go wrong with LEGENDS

Greatest singer all time
It's quite simple-there was no better singer than Ian Gillan during this era. Not just because of the amazing high notes.
The name 'Deep Purple' comes from a favourite song of lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's Granny . . the song talks about the deep purple shadows that herald the coming of the night.
Smoke on the Water a must listen
They billed themselves as the loudest band in the world at one time

I never cared much for DP, however I did/do appreciate the vocal range. Peace and safe blessings.
