You can check this relatively recent interview:
Q: Was Gillan a big influence vocally?
A: Ian was a big vocal hero of mine. There was Ian Gillan, Arthur Brown, Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, surprisingly enough, and a chap called Peter Hammill from Van Der Graaf Generator. They’re all in the same area of voices - they all had a ballsy sort of tenor, extended baritone thing to their voices.
Q: What other singers inspired you?
A: Paul Rodgers. I just thought that Rodgers was just stunning, and I didn’t even really try and copy his phrasing because I thought you just can’t it’s just he’s just so good.

Arthur Brown was and is one of the greatest singers in rock. His masterful vibrato & range was unmatched in the 1960’s. I don’t know for sure but I suspect Ian Gillan was influenced by him and King Diamond likely borrowed from Arthur as well.

I think 90% of those first reaction videos have to be bullshit. I just cannot believe someone remotely interested in something more than the latest summer hits (if you even can call that interest) or from a totally different cultural background, doesn't know Deep Purple. OK, this song is maybe not one of the most popular (like Smoke on the water or Child in time)... but it's close.
This band among a few other basically defined rock and metal for the next few decades. They still fill large concert halls today, so it's not like it's ancient history.

Hey Rafa, I admit I sometimes have the same feeling as I adore the era 65-75 but on the other hand : if someone would ask me to name some current superstars in music I would be finished quite quickly. From the entire hip-hop I would not be able to mention one name. So I might be a stranger to current reality as well.

We would pre order this and wait outside the record shop for it to open on release day. An album was relatively expensive back then. Would rush it back home and play it loud with a couple of mates on whoever had acccess to a parents 'hi-fi'. Rebecca - Love you and your videos! Ian Gillan is one of the best, especially when he was younger. I am including links to two clips that you must watch of Ian from 1970. They are both excellent and I will be surprised if you do not shed tears during "Child In Time." Deep Purple was my favorite band during the 70s and I used to sit and listen to him singing this song and I would sometimes just weep, prompted by the lyrics and Ian's incomparable vocal delivery.
Yes, Ian is still singing and with Deep Purple. He sang with them from 1969-1973, 1984-1989, and from 1992 to the present. In between he fronted his own band (s), Blackmore's Rainbow, Black Sabbath, etc. He is one of Rock's all-time great vocalists, for sure.

I just find that when people talk about the best front men they are more likely to mention someone like fredie mercury or Dio than him but to me he's right up there. Therefore he is underrated (not overrated as you may have thought I meant).

Hello - I want to start by pointing out that sometimes my honesty in my comments is read as negative. Criticism has two sides, it's not all about complimenting. That said, I have been an Ian Gillan fan since 1969, and have followed his very varied and impressive catelogue of music ever since.
I want to point out, you make some comments about lengthy instrumentals in this version of this song. Well, it is a live performance and Gillan comes from a line up of jamming instrumental bands - most namely Deep Purple. Hence long solos. The original studio version of this by DP only runs like 3:20. Have heard and seen many live versions by him of this song, and this is one of my favorites.
You tried to categorize him, and he's all that you mentioned. Great bluesy singer - hard rocker - soulful - emotional - great control in his prime - and when he wants, an absolutely beautiful voice.
Perhaps you are unaware he portrayed Jesus in the original Jesus Christ Superstar. Give it a listen.
And for a further adventure into his voice, I highly recommend this little piece DP did with orchestra in 1969 - ua-cam.com/video/dt-CX3k0PYw/v-deo.html. To make it more impressive, this is an unrehearsed piece that Gillan had just put words to less than an hour before performance - true story.
Finally, the scream. Yes, it is a scream. it is not nasely(sp?) or heady. It comes from the back of the throat - piercing, powerful. You can sing a bit operatic, but no offense, you don't scream so well. It is his trademark, and he did it for many years until age and wear and tear took its toll. No one else had "that" scream.
Someone else suggested Child in Time to you by Deep Purple. Yeah go for it. But remember, they are a jam band. Even the studio version of that one has long key and guitar solos. But do listen to it from the Made in Japan live concert and be ready to be outrageously impressed.
There's lots of music out there, but I do suggest that if you're the least bit impressed by Ian, that you dig further into his catelogue.
    Respect and happy music hunting

...and just to let you know: he has invented the belting vocal technique...he was the original (and best according to both the authors and Neely) singer on JCS...he was called genius by Pavarotti...and his highest vocal note is D6.

Well, you are young, but appreciative of great vocals in music and I thank you. I grew up listening to Ian and others like him. He's definitely on my top five list. Others below have mentioned "Child In Time" from the Made In Japan album. It will blow your mind, but one of my favorites is the guitar vs. vocals battle on "Strange Kind Of Woman" or the cacophony/chaos into melody of "Lazy".
FYI - You mentioned the long intros - this was early 70s music. Weed was much weaker back then. It took awhile before the buzz hit.

He's still out there with Deep Purple on the never ending tour. I believe they're winding down to call it quits. Sadly his voice is nothing like it was in his younger days, but it's the rare rock and roll singer that can perform at top level their entire career. Look into his early days with Deep Purple, from 1970-1973, for some truly epic vox performances, particularly on 'Made in Japan'. He will blow your mind.
