Can the Leatherman Surge Diamond File maintain its other tools?

  • Sharpening, de-burring, and general maintenance of the Leatherman Surge Multitool can be mostly accomplished by using its own T-shank Diamond File. There are a few exceptions to this, which are demonstrated in the video.

    Good summary. Just a note: 'awl' is not a homophone with 'owl'; it is pronounced like 'awe' with an 'l' on the end or like 'all'.
    Also, it is a 3-sided file, in that one edge is also grooved. It can be used to at least notch metal. I wouldn't want to have to cut through a bolt with it, though. I have the file on my Surge installed so that the mill file side is out. That way the 3rd side is down when the file is deployed from its sleeve.

    I regularly use the diamond file to touch up the edge on tungsten carbide lathe tools in my workshop. I own both Wave and Surge, and I really like the removable file facility of the Surge - sadly at the expense of the micro screwdriver from the Wave (I wear spectacles).
    By the way, look on the edge of the file - it has 3 filing sides, not 2.

      My shop just got a lathe and some carbide tools so I’ll have to try that when they dull! The third side is technically a metal saw, though it can work as a file too

      @@inkiron3907 Remember to use it lightly - it is a hone, not a hogging file. Also avoid using the diamond hole on softer metals like mild steel - you risk pulling the diamonds out of the matrix.
      Also remember that most carbide indexable tips are sintered with a vary small radius on the cutting "edge" - this is why you'll have difficulty taking very small cuts (that last thou) with carbide tips. Exceptions are the highly polished special bits for aluminium (I'm South African, where that is the correct spelling 😉) which are sharp.

    Ok, so about the saw: My dad bought a SAK "clone" in Toledo (spanish city, but its basically just a bigger and beefier SAK) and he has one of those classial SAK-Style Saws, straight teeth, not like the Leatherman teeth which are focused on pulling back. That SAK is so old and used the ETCHING spelling Toledo on the main blade is barely visible anymore. This was his only pocketknife on years of Motorcyle travel. The saw still cuts perfectly fine. The teeth are somewhat dulled, but those will stay sharp forever.
    Tbh, I think your Diamind coated file will dull completely long before the saw dulls.
    No need to think about sharpening the Saw :D
    Thanks to you and TX Tool Crib, i will buy a Surge for my Adventures andas an allrounder tool!

    Thanks for the video. Is the double cut side for any specific materials (wood, metal, etc.)? Is the 3rd side of the file (the really narrow side) used for anything? Is the little notch at the end of the file used for anything?

    • @randomescu
      @randomescu 2 роки тому

      I think the double cut are for wood and single cut for sharpening metal. The 3rd narrow side is a metal saw. The notch is for cleaning nails of dirt. I would not use that metal saw. I bought 4 tshank blades for different purposes and I use the diamond file as a nail polishing tool.
      some ppl say double cut are for rough action, single for smooth.
      maybe they are right, any wood file i saw were with bumps, not cuts.

  • @VladimirLadev

    You can sharpen the serrated blade and the owl just not the way you imagine also not verry comfortable but that point on the file and that nail catch do work in a pinch just take way more time and precission.

      I’ve had a good experience with the Leatherman Diamond file. I’ve only needed 2 of them across 5 years! But I’m not often using them on hardened steel, but brass and stainless steel

      Yes, butif you abuse it. Or better said, if you use it a lot. Is very small but is a decent quality diamond file. Equal quality thah my Lanski dedicated sharpener.
      I now that the diamond file on cheap ozrak multiforce China MT wear off immediately....

    I've owned and used both, while I really like the p4, the surge is definitely better made. The p4 is covered in razor sharp edges, I can't count how many times the tool cut me just by adjusting it in my hand. For such an expensive and relatively well thought out product (way too many useless flat drivers) they failed the fit and finish portion. The surge isn't perfect either, it's very chunky but I think I like it more.

    • @inkiron3907
      @inkiron3907  3 роки тому

      Yikes, it sounds like your P4 experience was rough. I agree the fit and finish had a long way to go on the P4, kind of like my SOG Poweraccess tool. I get gouges in my fingernails while using it

    • @inkiron3907
      @inkiron3907  2 роки тому +2

      Mine is also not as smooth as stainless steel tools I own even after years. The black Surge shed gritty black stuff for months until I scrubbed it with a steel brush and isopropyl alcohol. Now it’s smooth enough not to mind. If I could go back I might have gone Stainless instead

      Depends on what I want. If I want to treetop hairs then I’d have to fine tune the sharpening to the steel. But if I just need to cut some plastic straps on a pallet or break down cardboard boxes, diamond file serves adequately
