    Joe finally gives his Leatherman Surge multi-tool the video it deserves. This super capable EDC tool is a sufficient substitute for knife-only carry and adds a huge amount of other functions. Wire cutters, pliers, metal file, scissors, a bit driver, and the sturdiest awl you’ve ever seen are just part of the tool set here. Made in the USA with a 25 year warranty… It’s a channel staple for so many reasons! Even a secondhand Surge will serve well. See the links below and check out the Multitool video playlist!
    Note: Joe says several times that the GOAT (now officially the "Gear Of All Trades" tool) would be coming "this summer" which would have been summer 2021. Not sure where he got that idea, but the GOAT tools weren't shipped out until summer 2023. Please disregard this bit of stupidity, thank you.

    Just bought a Surge for my father's birthday, and more and more i think that I'll have to get one for me as well, this tool seems really useful and sturdy.
    Really looks like a must have!

    8 years Surge has been in my pocket. Just amazing. Saved me countless times, learned to sharpen it and all my knives with the diamond file to shaving sharp. In the beginning my wife was asking why I carry this thing with me all the time. Now she just asks for scissors or a knife or just fix my thing that broke. Love it!!! For 8 years I broke the scissors spring pin but it went through hell cutting things you would use a knife or sheers for. Replaced it and it is good as new. Service it my self as I am far far away from the US and shipping and possible transportation loss is not an option for me so when I needed the scissors replaced the local reseller changed it for a small fee. I think they scrap a bunch of tools to make parts from because it is so expensive to ship.

    Hi Joe, I've had the stainless version for about 2 years now and I can confirm that this one is the smoother version after playing with both mine and a friend's black version. As for the wire crimper, I've used it to rewire my horns on the side of the highway and it worked well when I did use it. The sheer size of the tool made it easy for me to really get a good grip on it. Great video, keep up the good work!

      @inkiron3907  Рік тому +1

      A few other owners of the SS version have said the same. I think now we’ve got a general consensus that the Black Oxide makes the tools stiff overall 👍good to know the wire crimper is effective. I still haven’t used it 😅

      Yep. What I find difficult is that Leatherman has the best all around multitools but SOG has pliers that are 2x-3x as good. With pliers that work that much better it's hard to go with another multitool. I like and agree with what he said here... "when I don't know what I'm going to need today, I go with the surge" (paraphrased). However I greatly dislike when he essentially apologized for Leatherman using the word "gentleman". Super gross.

      I've been using the surge 5 years, no problems and have not yet replaced cutters. I have sharpened the awl and knives, and the scissors. I have also reshaped the screwdrivers but it also has the exchangeable bit, which I have acquired extras.

    The thing I most used on my surge was the driver bit, it's great for that, and the extra bits you can get from leatherman just adds that much more versatility

    I use one of those chunky $5 ceramic/steel carbide sharpeners, I've been using it for years on my SAK & Multitool collection and in only 20sec it's brilliant. It leaves a much cleaner, sharper finish than you showed on your blade.
    A few UA-camrs have modified the wire stripper in their tool semi circular with a round file to make it more useful for coax & larger cables.

  • @michaelcolloton6971
    @michaelcolloton6971 Рік тому +6

    The worst part of the Leathermans that have the bit exchanger is the bits themselves. They're just too soft for any meaningful work.The Leatherman driver extension and the Weha 13-piece bit kit (which fit in a Tic-Tac box) solved that problem.
    The serrated blade is also great on slippery plastic stuff like dog food bags, cable ties, poly rope, etc.

    HAA ! That tool hardly looks used ! You should see mine . I am a Marine electrician, I used my surge 20-30 times a day 5 days a week . I carried the wave for about 10 years " broke 3, lost two in the water " I have carried my Surge 6 years now , and I am talking hard use, prying, cutting, driving fasteners , cleaning and scraping battery terminals , cutting wire and cable. I can actually cut #2 stranded battery cable with it . I carry a good sharpener in my tool bag because I need to sharpen both blades 2-3 times a week. Mine came black and most of the black is worn off. Strongest most versatile tool on the market. About 20 years ago the Electrician training me said " If you work with a leatherman on your belt for two weeks , you will never want to work without one " . He was right ! On days off when I go somewhere with my wife , I feel naked without it !

      I carry mine 24/7. Lol keep one in the bedside table… gotta trim a nail now & then. I’ve had easy jobs & rough ones. I have always found the need to use my leatherman wave! I’m planning to add the surge to my kit. Mainly for the variety I can have with the T saw adapter. The wood saw is good in the wave but the fine tooth doesn’t cut it .

    I’ve had a surge for several years now and overall really like it. I did customize mine with stuff I wanted namely, the eyeglass bit holder from the original, and a dedicated bottle opener(made from another can opener).
    Funny enough, I think the surge unmodified pairs really well with a swisschamp. Some tool redundancy but you have a ton of options

    Thank you for the review after use! It is 2024, Leatherman has many tools, but I went with (ordered after your review) the Surge for my go-bag. Hike, ride, office, survive, ...whatever - I look forward to reducing the number of other tools (many infrequently needed) I now carry. I will likely add the pocket clip for keeping in place in my bag. The blades will allow me to put my long serving Swiss army knife away with its corkscrew, tiny magnifying glass, fish scaler, being tools I never used. I prefer made in the USA and the tool set you presented - there are no other US options. I still went with the oxide finish, I do not mind the look of a little battle wear, I look like I have and its still stainless.

    I work at a metal fabrication shop and I find tons of uses for my Surge. I love the black one because it's easy to spot among the other chrome tools on the table. Had to pop off a pressed in bracket and the small flathead came through like a champ! I use the pliers to unscrew clamped way to tight Vise Grips and unfuck some shit that went on wrong pry off some shit with the plier head. I use my tools probably harder than most but not harder than a mechanic lol.

    I've been using it for 6 years. I'm currently on my third one - not because it failed but I lost one and had another stolen from me. As far as I'm concerned its the best multitool in the world. I never concidered them too heavy but on a my duty belt weight keeps adding up. Since I run more often than I need a heavy duty multitool at work I have replaced it with a SOG power pint.

    • @inkiron3907
      @inkiron3907  2 роки тому +1

      I’ve heard mixed reviews of the Power Pint, but it looks like a nice compact tool. Now that I have full sized tools from other manufacturers I think I’m even more convinced the Surge is the best on the market 😂

    • @TheKimjoh560
      @TheKimjoh560 2 роки тому

      @@inkiron3907 I think the mixed reviews is due to people comparing apples and oranges. The Power Pint is in the same size cathegory as the leatherman Micra or the later Style PS tools. Its about as long as a victorinox swisschamp but only half as thick. Its really a feat of engineering how much they managed to squeeze into such a small tool and how much more capable it is compared to other tools its size. It really punches way above its weight. Time will tell how it holds up but I have had zero issues so far. It certainly one for the shopping list of any multitool entusiast :)
      And yes, I bought a Gerber Centerdrive a while back. They really cant hold a candle to the Surge. The Centerdrive is a popular tool but the Surge makes it feel like a cheap toy.

  • @Ribosomedreams
    @Ribosomedreams 2 роки тому +8

    The Ultimate WEAKST point about the surge is the scissors construction. The way that the spring is held in place by 2 little metaldimbles , one visible one hidden, makes room for hard failure of the mechanism where one of the little dimbles break for seemingly no reason. This cannot be fixed by yourself unless you replace the entire mechanism.

    Also, have you tried loosening the inner tools just a touch? You can get the safety bits and take it apart, gets some good tool lube, coat the axel, and then locktite the “pivot” and put it back together just a touch less tight. They’re probably be pretty easy to open after that

    So I have to say that this video, was probably the catalyst for me subbing to your channel. I have always "respected" the Surge, but felt it was too heavy. Well, I have stopped being a prima donna about the Surge's weight, and now I can say I am a believer. I have owned my Surge for about a month. I definitely like it more clipped to my pocket, than at the bottom of my pocket, although I will say that Leatherman should refine the clip a little better for the Surge. I am amazed at this tool set, it quite literally hits every tool that I like to carry, and the scissors...well they are unrelenting. Move over Victorinox, these are your scissors killer! As for the rest of the tools love the simplicity, and yet I'm thinking of modding the smaller flat bladed screwdriver into more of a chisel, than a screwdriver. I have been very snobbish about only carrying a Victorinox brand. One reason was because of the scale tools. I have recently found that the scale tools I carried in the Handyman are easily stowable. I have a small ferro rod under the saw, and the tweezers under the serrated blade. Well, I can say that I am very satisfied with the Surge thus far, have to give credit to your channel for highlighting the tool from a user perspective, and not from someone pushing to sell gear, who has only handled it for a week.

It's actually makes the reach longer than the exchanger with the extension only downside is you have to have the sleeve with you .. but most people keep the standard bit that comes with the tool in the exchanger the number 1 and 2 combo Phillips with a 3/16 flat on the other end ..both the rebar and supertool 300 have that in the tool set ..so unless you need a odd size on hand your not losing any capabilities other than needing the sleeve with you
