The Subaru Engine and transmission sit in the VW Bus engine bay! The engine Install continues. Mick Longley busaru.com busaru@busaru.com twitter:vwbusaru
I’ve had a T3 and my biggest bitch was the air cooled engine and it’s maintenance. Do you do these on a regular basis and can I call you for a Westfalia conversion?
From your video's you do some nice work. Im considering a similar project to tackle but from what Ive noticed some people have used Honda V6's. From your experience have you done or seen any yourself. The boxer engine is a nice swap but the 300hp potential from a tuned Honda V6 is steering me toward it as we are a family of 7 and a few extra ponies always helps on road trips....
+rottysaurus I haven't seen a Honda swap but you'll get good power from a Subaru 6 cylinder too. Or you can go with a small Subaru engine and a turbo. Lots of support for the Subaru engine, I'm not sure about the Honda stuff.
Hey, Mick; I've got a question for you on this video: You show jacking the engine transmission package up from underneath. What are you using as a saddle on your jack to deal with the very lumpy underside of the Subaru case? I used to use an ATV lift on both Type 1 and Type 4 engines because of their flat bottom, but the Subaru engines don't play that. What do you use?
+Marshall Webber I use a motorcycle lift as well but there is an Outfront Motorsports shortened oil pan on this engine so it made for a really nice flat platform to balance the engine on. I keep threatening to build a platform for the ATv/motorcycle jack but it's really only used for an hour or so each project. Time:benefit is better spent on other projects.
So you always add your TVR after you've got the engine installed, yes? Do you just unbolt if you have to get it out, or do you raise the bus higher? I ask because once I got my TVR in place, I didn't want to unbolt it from the manifold and tear up the gasket which has gasket sealer liberally on it. Any ideas?
+Marshall Webber I use the composite/paper gaskets once installed. I generally install the TBR once the engine is in the engine bay. I can see your predicament. If you know you have a nice good deal on yours and don't want to break it then I'd just jack the bus up higher, but that's probably not the safest way...

Nice job , is the subaru motor alot quieter than the old motor or an aircooled motor?
+MrAllinclubs it is, unless you have a performance exhaust on it.

steve lopes sr published a picture of his motor carriage on FB.
+Mitt Stehelin Cool, if I had some Facebook I'd check it out.

Is this for sale? I've been seeing a veryyyy similar bus around craigslist and thesamba.com for sale.
+Jordan Taylor nope, it's a clients bus and they travel all over he place. I doubt it has the same setup as it's pretty original.
