In this video I cover some of the major tasks involved in putting a Subaru EJ22 engine in my 1974 Beetle.
Backstory:
Here is my 1974 VW super beetle that has been in my family since 1983. When I restored this car back in 2016 I put in a rebuilt 1600. The stock engine worked well and drove it for about 30K but always wished it had a little more pep and could keep up with other cars on the highway.
In AUG 2020 I found and purchased a wrecked 1997 Impreza from an online auction site. It was the perfect car, it had the non-turbo EJ22 engine, decent mileage (109K miles), and it was wrecked so I didn’t feel guilty gutting a perfectly good car.
I tried to re-use as much as I could from the donor car, I have linked a parts list spreadsheet to all the parts I purchased for this build.
Music:
“Welcome Back” & “Let Yourself be Huge” by Cloudkicker
Big thanks to Ben Sharp AKA Cloudkicker for giving me permission to use his music for this video. Check him out.

The patience it takes to carefully remove the electrical stuff, test it and then reinstall all of it onto a car not designed to accommodate it.
Also, the knowledge to source and install the correct parts to bring it all together to life.
Much respect.
You have to admire the person who doesn’t except things as they are, and those willing to move the boundary lines.
I would have " admired" the "person" if he would have kept the Subaru 5 speed.... ua-cam.com/video/1xyE8oU-s4c/v-deo.html

How come 300 + people failed to appreciate the hardwork, determination and grit for this sleeper.
This is truly beast on the streets, nicely done.
If u cld c the smiling faces of people around these 347 when they die, u will know.
Because it fucking sucked what is the point of replacing 1 slow ass engine for another slow ass engine it’s was still slow af lol 😂
@@americanmuscleup2497 how can an engine be slow? It’s all about power to weight bozo
@@jasonnickerson333 you understand the point otherwise what did you respond to dumbfuck... you just want something to say are you happy now
@@jasonnickerson333 look a that name, he only thinks v8s are fast even at 5000 pounds bro
That job is intense but you made it look easy. The before and after acceleration runs brought it home how much the swap changed things. The electrical end of things would be my unicorn. Electronics is not my strong suit. Great job and another beetle still on the road !
One who never owned a bush frog can not truly comprehend the transformation.
Courage. And BALLS does it.
Excellent work young man!
You've answered the question probably every Volkswagen air-cooled engine owner has asked himself if he's replaced his own motor.
Excellent concept beautiful work thanks for sharing.
can be done to vw bus / van too also with porsche 6 cylinders to vans and trans from some porsches can be used for a 5th gear
I had a VW Bus PASS me on a hill north of Roseburg Oregon , I was in my empty log truck with a 425 cat and rolling 70, fucker walked by me like I was standing still. It was Subby powered. And I liked it!!
I always wanted to get myself a kombi and do a Subby swap on it. Sadly it's never going to happen, but it was a nice dream.
Your exhaust pipe modifications really changed the clearly identifiable Subaru sound to a unique exhaust note all your own. Sounds great!
Fantastic man. I as a 72 year old drive and love my 2008 Subaru WRX 2.5.turbo, beautiful ride and sound.
Takie serducho w garbusku.
To jak spełnienie marzeń niejednego gostka.Tobie sie udalo.
Super.brawo TY
Thats badass! Awesome job dude sounds much more lively. I bet it puts a bigger smile on your face when u drive it now.
That feeling when u start the engine for the first time is incredible! Good job man! This video is awesome!
Magnífico trabajo !! 👏👏👏👏👏 "Las cosas no se dicen, se hacen🚗, porque al hacerlas se dicen solas✈️ "... 👏👏👏👏👏
Nice work! I did my conversion back in 2008 with the ej25 SOHC engine. Retained the factory fuel injection as well but I mounted 2 radiators in the front fenders and a third behind the grill of my 71 Super.
Five gold stars. Much respect. Before/After format works great.
Woooow.... great!
Old Beetle never die❤️
Greetings from Germany
Nice swap! I spent many years playing with high-performance air cooled VW engines and always wondered about a WRX engine swap in a Karman Ghia.
Man, that would be a SWEET Ghia conversion
Nicely done. Great music choice as well. Love Cloudkicker.
1:09 ~ Nice! Love seeing the completed harness to the CPU. A pictures worth thousands of words here.
Cool how you did the before and after runs. It's quick! Nice build.
I'd totally bump it up another inch.
Hell Yeah Man!!! Huge difference on HP from the original engine to the EJ22. You taught me a future engine swap.
Learn something new everyday. I never knew Subaru had a flat 4 in its vehicles. On top of that, what a bad ass swap! Great idea...
Just curious... what did you think was under most Subaru hoods? A few got the H-6, while even fewer got the I-4.
Awesome. As I'm your dad's age now, and never had kids, these are moments I wish I had. Much respect young man.
Hay man nice job I have a 73 super that ive done An ej2.0 turbo swap in its been two years and I put crazy miles on this car 300hp to the tires its an absolute blast to drive. Again great job and welcome to the Suba Beatle family
Thanks man! What kind of mpg do you get?
I get 30mpg avg cruzing at 75 to 80 on freeway I have done sevral 1000 mile round trips with not one issue :)
Oh crap! A Beetle in the back mirror pushing it ;-)
Nice!
en mexico amamos los vochos, pero ver un vocho con motor de subaru es flipantee...!! alucinante
That is a Beetle that I would like to drive every day❤❤❤❤
This is an awesome swap. Great engineering. Wish you a lot fun and save miles
Muy bueno!!! Te quedó 10 puntos y con toda la personalidad. Si decidís sacarle ruido, por favor no le saques mucho.
Wow such a clean finished look. Good job!
Well done man! This video is awesome.. had a vision and ya nailed it.. at this very moment lifting my 1600 back into my ‘72.. must say I wouldn’t mind a sub engine going in instead 😂. Greetings from Oz.
I love the build. But, if I was going to put a radiator on a bug, I would have put a heater control box in with a manual water valve to make it bearable in the winter. Maybe an old Jeep control box would fit somewhere.
You should absolutely be in luck, as most of the guys doing this swap mention how the Subaru generally prefers a heater core in order to keep its cool.
Hi Anthony,
Great, great and great job! I also really enjoyed your video. The best part is the first start... I did the same thing with my karmann ( 97 impreza, blablabla... ) .my wife was waiting for the first crank and totally failed ; )
Anyway, super cool!. Jerome.
Nice report ! The best part is your love for your beetle .
This beetle has been in my family since the early 1980’s. It was my moms first car.
I've seen some people do those swaps on vw beetles here in Brazil, it's pretty sick
I heard a long time ago that actor Paul Newman owns a VW Beetle with a Porsche 911 engine.
Beetle of your Subaru engine is just as great.
This is so sick, I am currently putting an ej25 in my baja project, I would love to get more info on this build
Thanks! I’ll try to get some videos up detailing my build. I have a google spreadsheet of all the parts I used for this project linked in the description that may be of some use to you.
@@3DPrints4TC awesome, do you have an Instagram?

A '63 VW Beetle is my dream car. One day I hope to learn about cars so I can buy one and engine swap it
Just the wire harness gives me tics. 🤪
Great job, looking forward to seeing more of it. 👍
To have an old car with a modern engine is so cool🤙
Fantastic swap and the cooling system is brilliant !
Came for the swap, the music helped
Respekt für die Leistung und Hingabe das Ergebnis ist echt wow.
Great work, very nice. Congratulations!
From Brazil.
Thank you for that amazing ENGINE swap video!
1:00 I woulda thrown inda towel right here..
Great job M8!
Definitely know what you mean, or I would just went itb's on the engine and clear that stuff out.
Interesting muffler design, I wouldn't have thought to have the banks totally separate. Sounds good.
You built a little sleeper there! Nice!
Love this. All the best with this amazing build
When I was a teenager, my I lived next door to a guy who worked on old VW's like this. He could make a hot-rod air cooled VW engine and they sounded great, this seems like it might be less work.
Would love to try this- I have the mechanical skills but the wiring is so daunting to me
just wars dude.
@@marty0715yt yes Han
I think you can buy the wiring already done which is what I’d probably do. 🤣
Sweet little bug! What an awesome project.
I’m going to do this in a couple of months hopefully it will be as smooth as possible. Great video I’m pumped now 🤙🏻
That EJ looks beautiful in that car!
Que trabajo bien echo, felicitaciones, tuve un VW 1600 y también un Subaru 2.0 que sonido del Impreza, me encantó.
Gotta love the 1600 Half the fun is getting there so is a build like that well done
Awesome ! congrats from France !

Hi Noel thinking of swping a Peugeot 505 GTI executive with a Subaru engine....ever been done before in France? The car has character it's underrated actually.
Bro you got hell of a car. I've always wanted to swap a vr6 onto a cabrio, i bought the engine and other parts, then i chicken out when i saw all the parts lol. Great work, enjoy your car!
Super travail 👍👍
C'est un plaisir à regarder 😜
Awesome job. Sounds GREAT! I've wanted to get a Type 1 for a long time, and an EJ22 swap would be perfect for it!
Excellent work 👏 👍
What a swap 🤤
Congrats bro, have a pleasure with this magnificent beauty.
Nice video
Awesome job. Thanks for sharing the parts list. I'm thinking of doing mine🤙
That was great. How satisfying that must have been. Lots of complexity..
My dad always wanted to do this it was his car dream project
The Subaru to beetle swap is definitely the way to go. Mighty car mods did a feature on how to build a sleeper beetle about 5 years ago and it’s intrigued me ever since. Well done !
Bravo mate for the excellent work.
For future reference there is a port on the rear of the right hand head under a plate with two 10mm bolts.
That will accept a distributor from an EJ18.
This will remove all the ecu and allow carburettors for a real easy swap.
Cheers Matt
I have the same set up in a jet boat running on LPG (propane)
Funny enough I just bought a Yamaha jet boat last month haha
That is wild. You will love it mate..
I’m just finishing the build. 13 foot aluminium with a Hamilton jet on the back.
Funnily I am wiring the distributor at the moment.
It’s only taken me 12 years. Kids will do that to a plan.
I had the same engine set up in a Brumby, which is a Brat in America.
It had ej18 pistons in it too, to make good use of the 100 octane LPG.
Absolutely screamed.
Have fun mate.
Matt
Please tell me if I am being rude.
Another suggestion for you.
As you have good clearance under the hood, a Toyota SC14 blower gives around 6 pounds of boost with stock pulleys.
The computer thinks it’s all ok if you upgrade the injectors and keep it cool. I did H2O injection.
It spun all 4 all the way through second gear.
Remain having fun.
That car is now a rocket!!!
My god!!!
I saw you pass that WRX at the end! Lol. I bet the were looking out their window!
Excellent!!
from Japan with all my gratitude
good job! Well Done! Hug from Brazil.
Perfect mod for brasil.
What an awesome build man. Hope to see more videos with it
Much better! Great execution!
Sweet! You just built a VW/Subie Widow Maker! lol
I have heard of these swaps, but the classic sound will always win 🏆👌
Peccato che non si possa fare anche in Italia questo lavoro, solo per la pista.
Per Chi ha voglia e un po di soldi da spendere e tantissima passione è un immensa soddisfazione
Awesome swap dude 2 of my favourites mashed together 🤙🏻😜🤙🏻
I'm not a car expert and I always wondered how these engine swaps are possible at all, I mean, how it is possible to attach such a different engine to the drive chain. This adapter plate thing kind of explains it to me. 😉
Looks complex, though, especially all that work on the electrical parts. Very impressive!
All of your pains taking work to complete this project shouldn't be just compressed into less than 6 min video. I want to see more of your work! Great job at the end!

I've been wanting to do this but with a Karmann Ghia and drop a turbo in it
How Crazy this custom. Congrats. Put It down,.change tires and Brakes. You'll need !!!
Awesome job sounds great 🤙🤙
Kitbashing on a 1:1 scale. I love it!
I'm so jealous, I've always wanted to do that. Good job
Schöner Umbau - tolles Video👍
Great work if only I had the knowledge . From the UK.
The beetle it's stupidly simple, there is no easiest car to start with!
@@santiagoperez2094
Yeah I know I got two . I was on about the engineering and installation of the subaru engine and wiring. I would be scratching me head for a very long time .
Hi from france , congratulations , great work !
lovely edit mate- and project. well done !
Awesome project. Great video. Well made.
you unlocked BEAST MODE!
Cool project, like it a lot
Wish we had a complete video!
Nice , like the way it sounds
Great job mate, very well done, g,day from Australia. 👌👍👏
I lived in 29 palms and joshua tree, as well as Mesa Verde California, wich is near Blythe. The only parts of California i like are the desert cities . Also.. awesome beetle
The hottest cities on earth haha
Subaru engines are so beautiful
Electric cars may be the future, but you have to have the soul of a toad not to appreciate a gearhead conversion like this!!!
I cheered when you first started it up!
