I could have many more problems and id be still full of gratefulness for having that wonderful garage i swear you are very blessed. Gratefulness is a super powerful energy to be.
My garage floor is cold. I bought several packs of halfords foam floor tiles and cut/fit them into place. Work brilliantly, not expensive at all and you can stand on them in bare feet and still have some warmth, plus they are easy to keep clean and if they get damaged can be cheaply replaced as they are click fit.
A bit late... With the roller door. Make a plywood "screen" to lay against the door when you are working in the colder months. It works like double glazing. The heat will stay in the wood rather than being absorbed by the cold metal door. Have a play with cheap ply from shipping crates. Your work bench. Source old conveyor belt. It is about 1/2 " thick. Not too hard to cut and is super tough. I actually cut it wider than the bench and made a 6" splash back as well. It is heavy enough to stay in place and tough as nails. Your cold floor. Again rubber mats. I found some woven mats made out of car tyres. But there are some others called Rhino mats. They are inexpensive and help reduce fatigue from standing on concrete. Good luck . I love your workshop.
Excellent video as always Neil! Love the honesty in it, all good tips for others. My own roller garage door is single skin too, note you can get insulated roller doors too, so you won't have space reduced. I'd highly recommend the foam tiles for a cheap, comfortable option. It also helps massively with the insulation!
Useful stuff! I built my dream garage last year and this would have been welcome info. I have used stainless steel food preparation tables for my work spaces, and they work really well. Also picked up some cast-off oak kitchen cabinets for cheap because oak is now so out of fashion for kitchens.
Frame around the garage door and sheet it with osb. Build two barn style doors that open internally. That will keep the heat in and not take up a great amount of space. Bonus of that is it will allow storage above the garage door.
In true Brit style, you’re so calm! You could drop the car off the lift and ‘it wouldn’t be the end of the world’! You’ve not got this Influencer drama clickbait down just yet! Haha! Don’t change, you’re great (as Tony the Tiger once said)
The black worktop will unfortunately show everything up. I like a thin layer of rubber where I work on my bench at work. Is nicer to work on than stainless steel. Has a bit of give when putting heavy parts on it.
My garage door is a roller shutter type and all the slats are all foam insulated. My garage is the same temperature as the rest of the house so the door works quite effectively.
For me I would overlay some wood on the work benches with a metal checker board "splash back" Also I would just put some open type shelves up on the other side with plastic type containers. My opinion of course. Cheap & effective thats me!
Has thee gone soft lad? ,I'm 54 and still work in ALL weathers on my drive with jacks and axle stands, I could only dream of a garage like yours down in the warm South, its proper grim ooooop North thee knows ;) Great video nice to see an update keep em coming.
I have a big peace of plastic on my kitchen table to protect it from my daughters klumsyness. It helps a lot. Maybe you can do the same at your work space? Greetz from Holland
If that was my garage i would put some rubber carpet type material on the worktop. Nice content, just watched all of your bmw 5-series videos, because i bought a 530d touring e61 a week ago, loving it.
I feel like the more storage you have; the more shit you'll accumulate in your garage, and the worse the work will get because of clutter - I really like the idea of having it bare minimum
Champagne problems. Everybody needs more storage! It’s really a great setup. I thought you had a turning radius on your original architect plans? By the way that concrete driveway finish is really smart, what’s that called? What was the all in cost for your project? I’d love to do something similar and would like to start budgeting. Cheers!
Don't say that... I just had the exact same door in the exact same colour fitted a few weeks back, based on your review video. Only difference is my Z is Blade Silver ;) Love the door, time will tell how well it lasts :) And for what it's worth to anyone reading this, the discount code does work if you ask nicely ;-)
I got myself a dry suit overall. Basically a fleece onesie that goes under your overalls. Always toastie with that on. The only problem with it is if you are welding. Fire retardant fleece isn't a thing apparently.
I have a plastic curtain to subdivide my workshop, it's half transparent and half coloured. It keeps a lot of the wind out of my north facing workshop door. For a couple of hundred they are well worth it. I'd try aluminium sheet, 1.5mm on the work benches. Nice workshop though
Regarding the lack of insulation on the door, might sound a bit odd but could you put some heavy curtains across the door to prevent drafts etc? Could make it drop down like a blind?
Loved the series. I'm in the same boat as you, hopefully moving to a house with a huge back garden where I'm planning on building a garage and workshop. I'm also planning on a two post lift. You have answered a lot of questions I was wondering about, especially with regard to planning and cost. I've been lusting after a wooden garage, but was worried that it wouldn't be sturdy enough or that it would require too much maintenance, BUT after hearing the cost of brick I'm definitely going with wood. Thank you so much for posting all this.
Why not just to something practical but perhaps not very elegant for the door and have a heavyweight "curtain". Lots cheaper. Solid wood worktops and a "splashback" that you can sand down or stainless would be far more practical for worksurfaces in a workshop. Foam granules in the concrete would have made a significant difference. No need to get a 3dr party/specialist to pour it. Garages never, never, have enough storage. What about all that space above the windows? Every wall should be covered in shelves or hook/tool boards.
How are you getting on with that lift? , I spoke to TB today about your model and it seems like a good buy, maybe a quick talk about what's good and bad about it now you've used it . It's quite daunting looking at lifts, they're all quite similar but it's not something you want to get wrong.
You put windows in the weirdest places. Places where cabinets and storage could have gone. Would have taken the insulation money and bought a log fire place made of iron or something, put that in a corner with the small round chimney pipe coming out the roof, nothing fancy, 400 tops. Toasty af in there it would be. Anyways, what's with the window?
Is the big black wardrobe from IKEA too? Has it got shelving? Good for heavy or long tools? (Oh er matron) Doing up my own garage atm and need storage!
Any plans on taking the Z back to the track soon? I've got my first track day with my '03 scheduled next month, would love to see some more tuning and follow up testing.
Nice and interesting summary... I would have thought the garage door would be already better insulated from factory, sorry to hear it isn't... Still like your garage really a lot, great job! Greetings from Bavaria
Mate it’s all good I’d give an arm and a dick for a garage like that…..!!! Regarding the floor you can buy these rubber square tiles that just lay on the floor and they have electric elements in them and they’re heated pads I’ll try them Regarding the door yes I can see that problem I wonder if you could change it for a two door one piece Maybe extend the workshop doorway 3 feet outwards and have two roller doors…… All the best from Melbourne Australia
@@RoadandRacetv I've seen garages have their doors open in the winter, but with a big plastic insulation sheet there instead of a door that attaches to the walls and top and bottom. Don't know how that's easier than just closing the doors, but hopefully there's something you could put behind the door to keep warm while you're working inside. Of course, that wouldn't help if you need the door open to move cars in and out...
How about an air curtain? You don’t necessarily have to heat the whole room if you heat the air immediately in front of the door. Also the floor isn’t colder than the rest of the room it just ‘sucks’ the temperature away faster. This could be reduced with some rubber matting.
Thumbnail, OH NO I REALLY f---ked up, I can't believe this happened. Reality, 'its a small bit cold, he scratched the work top and drove over some grass once R twice.
Despite the small problems your garage looks like a really nice place to work in.
I enjoyed the video and these types of observations really help folks planning their garage builds! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Tom. I watched your garage build video a few times before building mine which really helped.
I could have many more problems and id be still full of gratefulness for having that wonderful garage i swear you are very blessed. Gratefulness is a super powerful energy to be.
You can use the curtain for the garage door from the heavy canvas or even plastic in winter to make the room warmer.

I would suggest you take a look at M539 garage videos about his garage. It might inspire you and make your life easier when working at the garage.

Hi There - What make is your roller door?
I like how bright your lighting is. Still a really nice working enviroment!
Looks lovely in and out
How much was all of this buddy? What’s the size and highest point of the garage. Brilliant job! Cheers
Put a jumper on 😂
Or insulated overalls, they're a thing.
When your garage has a 'mezzanine' you know you are balling 😂
Stick a TV up on one of the walls itll make it a little more homey to have something on in the background while your working.

My unit is the same. Mine is a bit bigger so I use a blower fan to heat the area I’m working in.
Looks fab though!
For the floor just use a carpet or oversize doormats. Since I don't have a lift and roll around on the floor a lot carpets really help you stay warm.
Put a out let exhaust pipe so the fumes go out of garage, start the car with heater on and run for 5 minutes, your garage will be warm

Every in the UK would agree that 10C is indeed “toasty” mate 😌
I’d love to have a garage so I’m very jealous as yours looks great 👍
Possibly a quick easy winter fix is to have HD lined curtains fixed to the roller shutter box.
UV radiant heaters don’t care about insulation or drafts. They heat every object in line of sight.
Incredible garage build! What are the dimensions?
My exact same 'dilemma ' on garage door on new build garage

Nonetheless, a very cool garage!
Great looking garage! Can you share how much something like this would cost if you’re comfortable sharing that information? If not, that’s okay too.
If you follow the series, he does mention it every step of the way.

How much did you end up spending on the whole project

What kind of current house price are we looking at with the same land / house without the garage yet built?

Yes, booked in at Bedford at the end of Sept. Will make of video of how the suspension mods perform.
@@RoadandRacetv Exciting, good luck!
To solve the turning circle issue, just replace the z with a London taxi?
Perfect.
What are the dimensions of the garage?
6 x 7 metres
All in all, there are worse things to worry about. Personally I could live in there with my car 😉.
Nice and interesting summary... I would have thought the garage door would be already better insulated from factory, sorry to hear it isn't...

Thanks mate. The garage door has some foam in it so it has some insulation but it's not great.

They never insulate your ceiling
It came pre installed.

A blackout stage curtain would hold the heat in. We have one in the camper difference in cab temperature to habitation is incredible !

What happened to the clio?
The videos didn’t get many views so we thought no one wanted to watch a Clio. We sold it.
