many thanks!
Great demo guys :)
Thank you!!
You guys are best!
Thanks Thor B-E!
Is this a young Chappers and Captain duo? Cause I subbed either way.
haha...thanks
I bought a SubnUp today after doing an in store shoot out between them. I can think of absolutely no reason to get the POG over the TC. It is double the price, doesn't track bass as well, doesn't have the 2nd octave down, and doesn't have the toneprint capabilities.
And also cannot switch between mono and poly
can you do a synth bass sound with it and a drive?
I thought that at first. I got the sub n up had it about 6 months and sold it and I'm now wanting the nano pog. Theres something about the way the Pog sounds, especially with drive that other octave pedals just dont do! I think it's the synth vibe it ads to the sound. Theres the pog in it's own category then all over octave pedals.
POG (and most of EHX pedals) is a piece of garbage which costs like 3 amazing sub'n'ups !
The "chop" in the Octachop is controlled by one of the Sub knobs, you have to crank it quite a bit to hear it. Great demo!
I think that the Pog has finally been dethroned
Mmm… it still sounds better on chords. The TC has more features but does not beat that sound quality of the EHX.
We've done a demo of the Pitchfork
ua-cam.com/video/TBO-SdQuy-E/v-deo.html
I think its a bit of a different thing again...I'll see if we can do a "three way" with the Pitchfork, SubNup & POG sometime soon
Some of the TC tones sound pretty organ like to me, the POG definitely has a more "artificial" synth like sound.
It really depends on the sound you're looking for. Personally, I prefer the imperfect, almost synth-y sound of the POG on chords. It's more musical to my ears, but I say that with a certain expectation of octave effects (think "My Iron Lung"). I imagine many players (to whom a truer replication of the root note is more vital) would prefer the TC.
Absolutely...I love the way the notes glitch when you play chords on an old monophonic Whammy (like My Iron Lung)..I think imperfection is what makes things more interesting - to me anyways...its all personal preference! We just filmed the Pog/SubNup/Pitchfork 3 way shootout and that was the main thing we kept saying...its all down to what sound you are looking for...they are all different and great in their own way -Gabor
I thought to myself, who would do a great comparison of octave pedals, and there you were! Really wanted to see if it was worth buying a POG given I already had a SubNUp.
Sub N Up is a no brainier.I went for it,It's just superior 2octaves down, that are absent on POG,poly and classic modes, absent on POG,Toneprint editor where you can make you own custom octaver sounds,I mean the price is twice less than POG and the sound is great ,what's not to like here.
Only thing making me lean towards the POG is stereo outs
I place sub n up before my Boss CE 5 chorus ensemble which is stereo out and I split it into two amps,so I stil get the stereo octave sound.
Because I have a stereo amp setup and I got the TC Mimiq doubler, now all my mono pedals sound in stereo like there are four guitars,so in quite happy with the Sub N Up.The Mimiq is Definetely a game changer.
Are people afraid of putting it on just octave up for a second and take the dry signal out?
Really great to see FX pedals tested with guitar AND with bass guitar!
Thanks baudelette...we are going to do lots more bass demos in the future!
Too much yapping. Play more, speak less. Let the gear talk.
No can do...sorry
I've been looking for an octave pedal comparison that covers more of the low thumping "bassy bass" stuff (open E?). Everyone wants to play their bass like a lead guitar. ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill uses an octave effect and that's what I want to hear. Pounding the low boom, boom, boom.
I'm interested in using only the Octave UP function. I currently use the Micro Pog. Is the SubNUp any faster? the Pog has a delay that really irks me.
It tracks pretty good...not sure if it's any faster though
I got the Sub mini.. its quite fast I didnt even notice
when you did that thing with your phone to download the new tone I could hear the digital data sounding noise, my bluetoothed amp shut off then the video paused, by itself. No worries. Just hoping it wouldn't mess with my new JBL EON 1 personal PA which bluetooths to my phone for lots of eq, effects and memorized settings. I think the Sub n Up is the way to go. I've got the Pog here and it can't do what the Sub n Up can. Plus, they're inexpensive. Thanks for the review
SUBnUP for the WIN.
Why a guitar amp? I'd love to see this through a bass amp recorded with a mic and good pre. Great videos.
TC unit tracks so well, no reason to but the Pog.
any chance of a reveiw of the Boss PS-6 harmonist vs subnup. that has octaves, tri's and harmony in any key. Does the SubnUP have something else. ?
I had the PS-6, the tones wouldn't compare to the Sub N Up, glitchy and not very usable, interesting tool though
Sold a Pog, got an sub‘n up. Sold the Sub‘n up and get a Pog again…
Yeah, that lower octave is just better on POG, there's no way around it.
2:29 Here is where the demo starts...Is it fair to leave them at "roughly the same settings" as if they were designed the same way, and then say that one has more low end than the other? Or would it have been better to say crank them all the way to the max and then the min to see how they perform at the extremes to see which has more "low end" and which has more range of choices? My experience with electro-harmonix stuff is that they are hard to control because they go from zero to crazy in a very short time, so I don't usually put to many of their pedals on any board i would use on a gig because I want them to be less sensitive so they are easier to control when you are in a hurry.
Just to help people out, this is a review from me with time spent with these pedals. I have an original pog full size pedal and wanted a more board friendly octave pedal.
The sub n up starts showing its price the longer you have it. You just hear the flaws in it over time, it's a very messy boomy bass to the lower octaves. I never used all the extra gimmicky features either..
No matter which Pog you use the up octave will be synthy !!
Great demo. Always good to hear Australian reviews that aren't full on in the Accent. Probably not the best idea to play the bass through the guitar amp, especially when showcasing suboctave generators. Would love to see how these pedals handle some overdrive and feed back.
Thanks mate! At low volume its really no problem to play the bass through the guitar amp...
Fair enough, I prefer not to risk it. You probably already know about the differences between guitar and bass speakers, so I won't rant.
I have a question with these octavers, if you are only using the SUB out which pickup position sounds most like bass guitar and/or has the best note definition when playing chords? And which kind of pickups sound the best when trying to get close to a bass sound HB, single coils, p90s, mini hums? any suggestions would be much appreciated.
You guys should try hooking the TC Sub N Up to the TC Electronic desktop app.... I'm thinking you could really do some serious tweaking and duplicate the EHX POG sound.
I have a sub n up. one of my guitarists uses a pitch fork, other uses a micro pog. gotta say, the sub n up does not track as nicely as the two from ehx and the bottom does get muddy, but the octave up is definitely less synthetic-sounding and the extra features are dope to experiment with. I'm probably switching to a mooer tender octaver due to board space though.
Matthew Nguyen but now the micro sub'n'up has come out
Really is the tracking that worse?
I buy the TC (not Top Cat), tomorrow ,..not synthy like the up octave on the Pog,. and almost half the price,..plus 2 sub octaves,...game over !! Sounds better than Boss and MXR, also !!
I would choose the EHX Pitchfork over both of them. I'd also avoid buying any TC pedals because they use lousy switches that frequently break, and their customer service sucks.
Almost useless for my need, sorry guys...it's very, very, very hard to find someone who shows the "guitar to bass" conversion and how to get a decent bass sound with an octaver pedal. I mean: I play guitar and I have a duo with a keyboard player and in a few numbers of our song list I need to switch back and forth from guitar sound to bass sound during the same song...no one ever does a decent demo about it....
Leave it with me...I'll try to do a video about that!!
I would be really interested in a EQD organizer sub n up comparison. To me there is a little (fast) modulation on the organizer´s octaves and it would be cool to know if the toneprints can come close. And btw great demo as usual!! :)
Thanks M Fb...we will try to get our hands on one and do a demo!!
I replaced my Orgainizer with the S&U. Organizer never quite gets rid of an annoying warble and certain pitches just don't get along . Only love for Sub & Up. Very versitile in edit mode , but you can't save and install user toneprints through your phone.
dont eat the yellow snow?!?!?!
Watch out where those Huskies go...
😂😂 Pog off sounds like a diss!
More chords, please.
POG vs BOG
only slav can understand your joke)
Great video. I've just bought tc subnup. Is a great pedal. I have a question. The octaver pedal in which order must be placed in a pedal board? Before or after distortions, fuzz, modulation wah? Thanks.
i personally think before most pedals, but can be cool after others. just depends on what makes a nicer sound to you. im sure your already figured out what order you want it, since you posted this so long ago
great video guys! im also a frequent customer of Mooloolaba music, bought most of my rig from there. Keep it up :)
Thanks Brendan...make sure to check out their UA-cam channel...we have started doing demos for them!
How do you use the tone print with a PC ? Or will a Samsung phone work?
I'm pretty sure they do a PC version...I'd imagine they do an app for android phones...not sure though...check the TC Electronic website
The SuperFunAwesomeHappyTime Pedal Show! So basically you dont know sorry to have bothered you
No bother at all...I did a quick Google search and yes they do an app for android phones...and also the TonePrint editor software for PC
The SuperFunAwesomeHappyTime Pedal Show! Hi Thank you do much for that info thats cool and for a good demo
Wow
is one of them scandinavian by birth?
beautiful jazzbass
Should've included digitech ricochet/whammy. Nice video though
We've just done a video with the SubNup, POG & Pitchfork...might do a part three sometime down the track with the Whammy/Ricochet
Coolness. Thanks for doing updates and listening to the viewers!
Whats better at tracking full chords Micro Pog, Sub n Up or Pitchfork in octave mode ?
We might be doing a demo comparing all three pedals in the next week or so ...stay tuned!
+The SuperFunAwesomeHappyTime Pedal Show! Ok cool
prenup
With the tone print editor you can make the Sub n Up octaver to sound "synthy" and then some.
Yeah tons of option with the Tone Print Editor...great idea...and the whole beaming it through your pickups thing is just awesome!!
Is the POG stereo?
No it's mono...it has two outputs...one is a "dry" output the other one is an "effects" output...so you could in theory run it with a stereo setup and run the dry signal on one side and the octave up or down signal in the other side
are these 2 chaps in love?
With each other or in general?
loving the goodwood cables fellas!
LOVE all the Goodwood Audio stuff...best cables and Pedalboard Interface on the market....in my opinion!!
+The SuperFunAwesomeHappyTime Pedal Show! Definitely! i love my interfacer!
+The SuperFunAwesomeHappyTime Pedal Show! Definitely! i love my interfacer!
Can you use the tone print editor to create just a chorus without the octave effects?
Not sure...but possibly...you can do some very weird and wonderful things with the Tone Print Editor
Ste Ro you can!
Ste Ro yes you can. There are settings that allow you to kill the wet signal of the octaves without killing the modulation, and even control the depth of the modulation still. The Sub2 knob controls that.
Yup, I use this pedal for bass (so I have no used for the Sub2 knob) I went into the editor and made it literally just a chorus knob. So in my toneprint, I have Dry, Up1, Sub1, Chorus. And that chorus is applied to whatever the other settings are. Pretty awesome
6:08 for why the micro POG is still the best octaver pedal.Tracking is superior.
You guys think the POG sounds more "synthethic" but what does an octave up guitar effect sound like? It's not an emulation of anything so it really is new sonic territory for the guitar. If anything the the POG sounds like an organ.
Totally...thats what we were saying...its not better or worse...it just has a certain sound to it...which I like...the SubNup seems to be a "cleaner" sounding octave...less of an "organ" sound to it...two pedals that do pretty much the same yet sound quite different...
Nice demo! 6:30 wasn't interesting, it was awful lol. Try comparing the EHX Pitchfork and the SubnUp!
That's the comparison I want! It's between those two for me now.
Its coming!
Good, really considering the Pitchfork. Then again, I saw a super cheap option in Mooer and people say it's not actually awful.
+NEMusic ive had the Pitchfork for almost a year and have tried the Sub...I kept the Pitchfork. with an expression pedal it's almost unfair.
+Stephen H. Yeah, but I guess it depends on what you want it for and I only want it specifically for two things. Crazy organ sound is a given, but most of all, I want something to pad out my swells and ambience. Of course, everything else is a bonus.
"tone print" suggests "digital circuit" to me, right?
All polyphonic octavers/harmonizers are digital
Octave fuzz boxes are not usually digital. I am pretty sure that the Octavia that Mayer made for Hendrix was not digital, and I am pretty sure that most octave fuzzes made afterward are usually not digital. A quick Google of "octave schematics" will show that there are analog octaver circuits out there. So I think I would be careful with that "all" word.
Not polyphonic ones...there are tons of monophonic octavers but not polyphonic...stuff like Hendrix and Mayer play (Octavia style stuff) is technically monophonic even though it works on chords
Violet Deliriums if you are so good at using google, maybe educate yourself about the difference between an octave fuzz and a polyphonic octaver. When you done that, come back here and review your comment...
You have no idea what my brainpower is. Sorry troll.
I've had the TC for a little over a year. Seemed to be a great pedal at first, but I've since had many tracking issues on certain notes. I also later realized that the battery was draining even with the 1/4" input cable unplugged. My battery would be completely dead even after a day or two bc of this, and I had to start detaching the battery from the harness each time I put it away. I've had a 9v wall plug for a while so it's not really an issue now and I've chosen to live with it. Additionally, I feel that the TC seems to take a little high end off my bass signal when the octave is engaged, but it could just be my setup I suppose. YMMV
I'm confused, dan sitting left, playin' base ... I'm confused .....
Alex is a great bass player...
Is pog analog or digital? Tnx
I'm pretty sure there is no analog polyphonic octaver...both digital!
Thanks:)
Get a 12string guitar then it's analog. Lol
Hey guys! Thanks for the nice demo! Did you recognize any differences in latencies? Would be nice to know if the tc is faster then the pog :-)
None really...as far as I can tell both have basically zero latency...I'm no shredder but to me they both seem to track very well! Have you had issues with the tracking of the POG?
Yeah I mean it is not really audible when you don't focus on hearing that. That's why I am asking. My impression in your video is that the tc is a bit faster. Maybe because I want to be like that :-D But when I play the pog I definitely feel it! And that is always a bit annoying. Especially on bass with an octave up.
Oh ok...I think we will do another shootout in the next few weeks...with the SubNup, POG and EHX Pitchfork...I'll make sure we will check it out for you!
I have to mention that I use the the pog's dry out for the clean bass signal. If the Dry knob is before DA conversion that would make a difference compared to the bypass out, of course. But I hope EHX have thought about that. Really looking forward to your next shoot out! And thanks for reacting to the comments! :-)
The manual says the dry out is buffered. If that means it is latency compensated there shouldn't be a difference between dry out and dry through effect out.
These guys should spend a lot more time testing pedals and less time trying to be funny
TC Electronics is sheer crap, its a digital fuckin circtuitry, go for EHX or MXR or Boss
The POG is just as Digital as the Sub'N'Up...and so is any polyphonic octaver/harmoniser as far as I know....
