  • In this vid I show a great Hihat Feature - FIX (using SD3):
∙ the "Consistently controllable 2-closed-stages Variable Hihat"
    ∙ switching states "A" - "B" - "C"
    ( / 981895792724073 )
∙ The FIX is about consistently reaching and controlling the FIRST TWO closed stages - so especially the second stage (which can be the CLOSED or the OPEN 0 articulation) becomes very important here. By being able to consistently control the first two stages by foot motion and additionally by switching between three combinations of SD 3 articulations (TIGHT ; CLOSED ; OPEN 0) (= the states A; B ; C) your e-Hihat will be suitable for all musical situations and really becomes a DREAM of a e-drum Hihat: this is the BEST you can get out of it!
∙ The video is split in two parts:
    1. - a shorter basic presentation (which is an excerpt from the detailed part) - (00:37 - 11:32)
    2. - a longer and more detailed presentation - (11:43 - 47:12)
detailed presentation (2.) (some timestamps are listed here):
    ∙ 8 stages (11:43 - 11:26)
    ∙ switching to all available 2-closed stage combinations (15:14 - 18:07)
    ∙ Hihat SOLO presentation (18:08 - 22:23)
∙ switching to the original Toontack Hihat Engine in order to be able to play Hihat Splashes (22:24 - 24:16) [LINKS: SuperiorDrummer3 - Hihat Engine FIX ( • Superior Drummer 2/3 (... ) + (EZ2 - Hihat Engine FIX ( • EZ Drummer 2 [Toontra... )]
    ∙ additional Open-Closed Playing (26:05 - 26:30) + (27:43 - 28:57)
    ∙ long "C" (TIGHT - Open 0) presentation (29:25 - 34:06)
    ∙ long "B" (CLOSED - Open 0) presentation (35:13 - 39:06)
    ∙ switching from "A" to "C" (44:08 & 45:41) ; ∙ switching from "C" to "B" (44:37) ; ∙ switching from "B" to "A" (46:45)
All sounds from "Fields Of Rock" SDX ("Stone" default kit (using the 15" Agop Mantra Hihat) without any audio FX)
    FIX FEATURES & EXPLANATIONS:
∙ You can consistently reach and control not only the TIGHT* but also the CLOSED* (the 2nd stage) SD3 hihat articulation with your foot pedal position (= relaxed closed = just laying your foot on the VH-x or FD-9 pedal without additional pressure shall consistently trigger the 2nd stage without other Open stages or the Tight stage disturbing it.
So you can get the following pedal translation which is capable of being consistently and reproducibly controlled by your foot motion:
    1. - "Fully" depressing the hihat pedal with "normal" (relaxed) pressure ( = laying your foot on the pedal) : CLOSED* stage is triggered
    vs.-
    2. - again increasing pressure : TIGHT* stage is triggered.
    Btw, A ["1. TIGHT + 2. CLOSED"] stages can also be B ["1. CLOSED + 2. OPEN 0 (/1)"] or C ["1. TIGHT + 2. OPEN 0 (/1)"] and you can switch between states A , B , C by a dedicated pad stroke while playing.
**Roland "FD-9" controller pedal: with FD-9 there will be the issue of the disturbing Pedal "Chick" within the first two closed stages. I've FIXED this! :)
∙ the consistent control within the first 2 (closed) stages is preventing that the slightest foot motion triggers an unwanted stage like a semi-open stage.
Also, sheer CC data have to be prevented from triggering stages (- relevant with Roland e-drum hardware) - so there also won't be any transition artifacts and no ringing on fast Pedal Stepping :)
    ∙ The control toggle ("A" - "B" - "C") is triggered by one pad zone here (so I'm getting the following order: [A - B - C - A -...]. With this system you'll have to hit the pad twice in order to get from A to C ( or from C to B ; or from B to A ).
Of course you could also have 3 dedicated single pad zones (one for "A" , one for "B" , one for "C").
    ∙ supported DAWs: "Cubase Artist/Pro" , "Logic Pro X" , "Reaper" , "Bidule" , "AbletonLive Suite"
It can also be combined with other FIXES (like • Roland digital hihat "... )
When using a Roland FD-9 ** hihat controller Plogue "Bidule" is additionally required as a Plugin.)
    ** Explanation: - Why is Bidule required using a "FD-9"? No need using a VH-x (like VH-13)? :
The excellent FD-9 performance (which btw is exactly what I want from a hihat controller) triggers a wider value range regarding the closed stages. So there will be "Chick" notes unwantedly triggered within this closed range (no module setting can prevent this - even not the flagship TD-50). And the Bidule engine is just suppressing those unwanted closed range "Chicks". So you can switch between TIGHT and CLOSED according to your foot pressure and when doing so you wouldn't want any annoying Pedal "Chicks" to come in. The VH-x closed value range is much smaller - so Roland modules don't generate a "Chick" within this smaller range and no suppressing engine is needed.
Anyways, both hihat controller systems (FD-9 and VH-x) will work great with the consistent control of these 2 closed stages :)

( This example is Superior Drummer 3. :) Of course you can have the same principle of function WITH ANY CAPABLE DRUM SAMPLER of your choice :) Enjoy! 🙂

This may be a silly question, but you're playing quickly in the video and I'm not sure. Around 4:55 are you hitting the hat while it is closed, then opening the pedal and getting the sound to "open up" into an open sound without rehitting the hat?

Not sure what you mean... I'm controlling openness (and especially the first 2 closed stages) by hihat pedal foot positions :)
