Just recently started following this channel. Awesome content especially the history of electronic drums. Is there a reason why this channel was named 65 drums? Thanks
I love how honest you are without being rude. Wish other reviewers were like that.
Thanks! It's hard to find that balance
True! i really like that i can always trust Justin to say what he thinks and he is a polite person thats also honest so everything he says is just true.
Best edrum channel on UA-cam. 👍🏻
Justin's reviews are always the best . Unbiased - no riff raff, theres always cons.. theres no perfect kit .. love that he keeps it real. Awesome Justin - Rock N Roll
Get the V71 and sell my TD50X.... got it! Really love the fact that you can control it via a laptop or PC. That removes the need for a touch screen completely, for me anyway. Sick playing during the vid!
That app is going to be really important for the people that edit a ton and throw together set lists all the time.
You really still have the best e-Drum channel on ewwtube. the amount of intelligent research and information you spit out is AMAZING still! THANK YOU!
I haven't looked into e-drums for a long time and just discovered this... it's amazing how far e-drums got. The review is great too!
Hey VdrumsTips! Yeah it's hard to see the evolution from month to month. But when you step away for a few years and revisit, the companies really do make nice progress
We need e-Drumcenter to sponsor some insane Hybrid Custom Epic eDrumkit using the V71, Digital equipment then a mix match of various cymbals, toms, kick and create a super kit video lol
Great video as always. I never get tired of watching your drumming get better and better! Cheers, man.
I own Roland VAD 706 and DWe Wireless kits. The V71 module is definitely an upgrade and the DW Soundworks package are very good!! I'll be playing my V71 module with my DWe Wireless kit for the first time this weekend with my band!!!
Its a truly incredible machine but I've owned a TD27 for over a year which I play for hours daily, and yet I haven't scratched the surface of what it's capable of.
I really wish Roland would introduce a variety of cymbals.
I wish there was a better explanation of all the settings in the modules too.
Especially for rim shot sounds !!!
I just can't get that reggae high pitched harmonic I'm looking for.
@@laptoples sample your own or grab the sound from an album
Bro, great review! I love your content, I have been with you since the Roland TD7.
I do agree! this drumset is not only a "premium" one its basically the top of the line the "best of the best" and there shouldnt be ANY set backs, everything should be the best at the market because thats what roland charges it for.
The Goat of E-drums is back❤
Great work as usual Justin! I just got the V71 and I find it is a nice step up from the TD-50X. Hi-hat transition samples and controls are top notch and the DW 50th anniversary expansion sounds amazing to my ears. I’m certain expansions will get even better down the line.
Just checking on ya Justin your drumming is getting real now great to see you still going strong man !!!
Thanks for the most differentiated, honest and helpful video on the VAD616 I've discovered so far! 👍🏻
Honestly, you are the one that provides the best information for me to make my final verdict on E-Drum products which helps me make better purchasing decisions for my needs. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Tim!
Very comprehensive and informative review. As usual, good job on this.
I have no problem believing this is generally the best module ever created, but let's be honest. It still doesn't sound like a Mimic Pro. I ordered one and I can't wait to try it.
I've been waiting on this since Edrumcenter did the unboxing!
Was waiting for your review above all others... Thanks for the video, great information as always.
I was refreshing the 65Drums page every day seeing if it came out !!!!
Hehehehehehe
Justin rules !!!!
What a great in depth review Justin! You have by far the best (e)drum channel on youtube!
Great review, its a really nice kit, but way more than i would ever need. But its nice to see how far edrums have come! Ill stay with my wee litte td 17
Thanks Justin. Haven't talked for awhile as I'm building a new studio and starting a new band. I'm going to purchase the V71 Sound Module and add it to one of my other Roland kits. Or, I'll take both of my two Roland Kits and build a big V71 kit.
First comment ever…. I preordered this kit to replace my very used Alesis Strike Pro SE. I’m in need of something more reliable for outdoor venues. Although the Alesis lasted almost 4 years, I went through 4 ride cymbals and 2 hi hats. I wound up buying the Roland CY-15 ride and it’s worked flawlessly, proving Roland just makes a better product. Originally, they guessed the kit would ship in October. Now they are saying possibly December. Ugh…
Here’s a thought about why they may have put the rubber rim on the inside of the metal edge, the chance of it wearing out when playing hard rim shots is much less if it’s on the mesh head. I’m considering selling my Pearl Mimic Pro set up and getting this kit. I am concerned about your comment saying that there is still that Roland sound present. That was one of the reasons I migrated away after playing Roland exclusively for 30 plus years. Great vid as usual
Thank you for pointing out the actual sound of the bass drum. The acoustic sounds of edrums is somewhat overlooked, which can be a bit odd because that's a big reason why people by them (they're supposed to be quiet). Great review. I can't wait for the inevitable VAD 514.
Appreciate the info
Your content on edrum news is the best!
Great vid Justin! Even though I don’t play e drums any longer, I always check out your vids to stay up to date, I think you’re the best at reviews and info about all things regarding e drums! And, your playing has improved! Well done!
Edrum Workshop mentioned!
Always a good day when 65 Drums posts a video
I think it's a bit of a miss to not make a proper integrated rubber rim so all the pads get the new "feature" of a realistic rim height. I think finally making that 20 inch ride would have made a lot of sense. This feels more like a TD-50 upgrade, rather than an entirely new product line. It's not bad at all. It's just even more expensive, even smaller of a change compared to their last flagship, and not quite enough of a leap forward I expected 7 years after the TD-50. But i think the new module sounds are pretty good? I'm gonna need some longer playthroughs, but if Roland has actually managed to make a great sounding module that would be a company first for sure.
Thanks for the great review. That snare is super cool.
Great review! I like all the features that the Roland module offers but, I have now watched every video on this module/kit and cannot get past the machine gunning and the fact that you can tell it’s an electronic kit just by listening to it.
Efnote and pearl mimic pro sound so much better to me .
I can’t be the only one here thinking this?
So I own the DWe (the cymbals make me want to die but kit is amazing) and I played this the other day, I definitely like this module better than the TD-50x. Lots of preset customizations and the base kits sound good. Digital snare is not a massive improvement but still feels more responsive
Since the prices are fairly comparable (top end DWe is still more) I can say if these had come out at the same time I probably would have gotten this so if you are considering between the two I’d say this is more bang for the buck. And man….the cymbals. If DW releases another round of those they will have an almost perfect kit but Roland’s are king for now
Considering Roland bought DW I presume they are treating both these kits as their top tiers, the DWe for modern tech pushing….the Roland kits for reliability and touring rigs
Been waiting for this!
As always a great review. I would love to finally go roland and this could be the module. But that price is tough to swallow. Thanks for the review.
Nice review Justin. I like roland stuff, just can't afford them.
I just wish e drum companies would realise that we need extra inputs! Give me a module with at least 16 inputs,
know you can make a cymbal sound by hitting your hoop but it's not the same as having and actual extra cymbal. I 'm sure the efnote kit you showed had the "pro" box added. Efnote kits use a multi wire plug so you cant just plug in 1/4" cables for extra inputs.
I also think it's time for more inputs. But it is what it is unfortunately. Some people string multiple modules together or a module plus a couple trigger interfaces into a drum plugin.
My path is to buy the module and then snare (snare at some point but not pressing to get it). Sell my TD27 module and then put this module on my VAD507 and I'm essentially mostly current. Now, I just need to hope for a decent bonus or tax return in the spring and I'm all set 😂
Same situation😅
Me too !!!
I just want to see if this new module has better rim shot capabilities, or if I'm missing something in the settings on my TD27 module to get a high harmonic when I do rim shots.
If this new module is better, then I'm in for sure !!!!
Gonna start saving....lol
Great run down of a great looking kit. Thanks Justin.
Great video dude, definitely wanna try it out at guitar center
I tried a VAD706 not too long ago. The new features of the 716 are great. The one thing I found though when practicing songs with Spotify through the module I found it hard to balance the drums and music. I have an older Yamaha DTX III extreme that is at least 14 or 15 years old. I found the mix and sound quality far superior to the Roland. I use Bose noice canceling phones. Wondering if maybe other phones would work better . Maybe a segment looking at various kits and sound quality when playing songs might be worth looking at. Thank you Great info all the time
Did you try boosting the music in the mix in? You can increase it by 12 dB in the settings.
Always great to see your videos and listen to your opinion. Keep up this great work!
Thanks Marcus!
my guitar has a satin finish and god damn it got me really good, I love satin wood finish its just *chefs kiss* bang on.
Great review as always. One thing that keeps standing out about these "pro" kits are the $40 Alibaba cymbal stands with the knurled boom arms. Either these high end kits should be shells only or if an eDrum company is going to bundle hardware at the pro level least they should design it specifically for cable management. Use hollow boom arms and build in the ability to do internal cable routing so that cables from the cymbals and toms exit at the bottom of the stand instead of making them snake all over. Roland's solve is to use molded, clear gummy cables but they could do much better.
Awesome review! Thanks for the work!
Wow. This is epic. Great review.
Nice review, Justin! For that price, I'd like more cymbals and inputs. Great progressive leap forward though. I'm still sticking with SD3.
I never used positional sensing on my drums because im a really casual player but droping that feature from new module is kinda a set back, its not like a gimmick and stuff, that was a proper feature that made the drums feel more "natural"
@@jezusmylord it’s even more expressive not less.
@@onomatopoeidia oh my bad then
Thanks Justin, all the best from Melbourne Australia
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the review and sharing your perspective! 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for the review as always!
How's the rubber rim protector stuck to the head? Just by friction? Awesome video BTW!
Hey @65drums, any chance you could reply to my question, I'm really curious? I wonder if it will just fly off or if it's attached somehow?
I built my own A to E drum kit using the Guitar Center brand SPL in green sparkle! Using a TD-27
14:36 Roland flagships ... grey boxes
They all look like the VS-840 I got in 1998. It's a large grey box with faders on the left. The GT-1000 had a bit more wiggle room as they're not technically Roland, so it's a large black rectangle
18:33 Right after it came in, I was showing the effects to someone and told him how you could adjust the size of the virtual room you're using for reverb, down to only 4 feet, He responded "So you can put the drums in a room smaller than the drums?". Yes. Yes I did.
Thx for this❤
Definitely want to visit
e-drum center too
Justin, great playing, honest review, and helpful info. I'm a long time V-Drums user, V-Pro > KV30 > VAD706. The one thing I'm really disappointed in the VAD706 is the BD. Like you said, it's an annoyance to have to turn the head just right so the double BD pedal will fit. But even worse than that for me is the cushion. I play 2-3 hours per day 6-7 days per week with rehearsals & live playing. After ~2 months the cushion had a permanent deep indentation. I got a replacement cushion then had to switch to the Gibraltar Black ball Beater to lessen this but it's still a problem and a poor design, IMO. I agree with your statement, why not just go with the DW full mesh head design. Since Roland barely changed this design, is the VAD716 BD any better in this regard? Thanks for your help.
Great video Justin!
It's hard to comment because your reviews are so thorough. But I'll ask your opinion: For some reason, I really don't like the "Roland sound". It's fake and generic to my ears, but I can't define why. However, almost every VST sounds great. Do you agree? And does adding the DW drum downloads make it sound more like a VST?
I agree, they sound too digital. Especially the snare.
Ah yes a drum set I will never be able to afford
Yeah, and after 10 years, even the second hand depreciation rate will still be very low.
@@JiTiAr35I totally agree...never could afford the earlier models ...still can't !!!
Never say never
many of the features and capabilities seem overengineered and unnecessary - but that's what you pay for. the essential features and capabilities (if there are any truly innovative ones) will eventually trickle down to the intermediate models. a drummer who knows their way around the module, can get everything they need from an intermediate module from a generation or two back. even from justin's playing, the sounds out-of-the-box are still quite sterile and unnatural on this ultra high-end drum kit
Just buy it
I’m 28 years old, and still waiting for an electric drums worth the money! Lol
Vintage synth drums are the only instruments worth bothering with. The early 80s Simmons anologue sounds are useable and malleable as are the 70s syn drum sounds. If you could find a way to hook those up to modern pads they would be worthy additions to an acoustic kit for certain situations. I don't like the samples of those sounds in some of the modern electronic kits.
The only reason for owning a modern electronic kit is if you are living in an apartment or house where you can't make noise. I suppose you could use them for making demos.
If I was trying to make a recording I wouldn't waste my time with any of the modern pretend drum samples.
@@mancuniancandidatem SD3 is completely adequate with all the expansions it has. triggering that with say, the td27kv2 and a good computer would give you endless options and superior drummer sounds insane!
Looks really cool… but I don’t see anything that makes me want to move from my TD27
Great review as usual!
I like Roland sounds. I own the TD-27. I intend to pick up the TD-71. Don't know if the new snare is worth it change from the old snare.
Awesome video Justin thanks 🙏
Man, this new set makes me want to upgrade from my good old trusty TD-12… it is too much money though for my financial situation
I would really love to see if they can come out with newer expansion packs besides the ones they already have
I am curious for the v51 en v31 lines. This 716 is cool but way out of budget for 98% of people.
Hoping for that too (at least in shell pack offering). The V71 module is nice but I’d be happy with the 5-series shells like VAD5xx. I can’t justify the price of the 7xx shells.
This is the most exciting kit from Roland in years. Do you know if there are any plans to make that new snare fully compatible with other modules like the TD-27 including the throwoff? Roland have made massive improvements in the sound. Thank god there's no touchscreen on the module. My only gripe is that, like most other eDrum manufacturers, Roland seems completely uninterested in accessibility. I've been trying to contact all of them even going as far as offering free software development. I can't usually get past the customer support guys. If you have contacts that might help and are willing to put us in touch I'd be grateful.
Great update from Roland but 12 400$ here in Canada (before taxes)!
nice playing dude
PSA: There are firmware updates not only for the TD-50X (to support the new DSX digital snare, among other new pads), but ALSO updates for the digital ride, hi-hat AND the previous digital snare. Worth checking these out!
Pass I'll stick to SD3. The sounds do not sound all that good especially for the price.
These sounds are dull, lifeless and too digitalized.
The strata prime module sounds better then this and that one is like 1/4 the price of this flagship lol
@@bagelq2028but doesn’t feel as good to play. The strata prime feels too rubbery and bouncy. Not as natural imo. What are your thoughts?
@@seljoypro Strata sucks imo. it felt terrible and really laggy. to me, the yamaha with the silicon pads felt best.
It’s impressive, especially the module, but the price is outrageous. You could buy some of the best kits in the world for half that, but I know E drums are for a certain application
Roland is going to sell tens of these!!!!
Sorry to burst your bubble but luxury and expensive goods subsidize the rest of the market. You’re welcome
God i like that mahogany finish.
Latest and greatest = Unfathomable amounts of $$$. What is free, however, is the ability to actually play the drums and be a good dynamic musician. Even on an old 1987 CB 700 acoustic drum set.🎉
Thanks for the detailed review! I'm wondering if Roland plans to release a smaller 4 piece kit with the new module?
Could you make a video comparing this flagship to efnote? The pro 7 line looks good too. I use ezdrummer so I don’t care about the built in sounds they can’t come close to ezdrummer
Yesssssss!!!
As a td27 owner, I’ve spent a lot of time on the room size, mic settings, reverb, equalizer settings etc to achieve decent sounding kits. The standard pre set kits just sound awful in my opinion.
Been waiting for this- thank you! I own a TD-50X. If I buy a V71, and I download the TD-50X sound packs from Roland Cloud, do you happen to know if I'll be able to load my TD-50X kits onto the V71? Or is that asking too much...
No
Thanks for your great and honest review. I have a question. Now it's the time to upgrade my old TD20X and i was doubting about the TD50X for quite some time. Suddenly the v71 came out and is on the market now. What do you think?? When it comes to "natural playing" and "natural sounds" does the v71 differ much ($2700,- in Europe) from the TD50x ($1800) of course with the same digital HH, SNR and RDE? With natural i'm thinking about stick position and sound that is delivered. I'm very curious on your opinion... Thanks!
The R/L stick position seems to be mostly a MIDI feature. Like it is on the hihat and ride. Really cool they added it. And yeah the V71 is a very large step up from the TD20X.
@@65Drums Thanks for your quick respons!! But is it a big step between the td50x and v71?
Hi Justin. Do you all the stock Roland kits have round robin sampling now ? Wondering whether it's time to sell my Mimic Pro 😂
Thanks for this video!! Is it possible to connect other HH / Ride triggers from other brands which have more sensetive zones, like Bells, and have these, for example HH bell to be triggered by V71?
goddamn that bass drum is loud!
Use a KDQ-8 at night. It’s almost silent.
Justin, you should review the TD-716
I'd have to find one first :)
@65Drums They don't just hand you drums, yet? Haha
Also, I'm curious, do you think Roland made a "big enough" generational leap with just the snare being the biggest change?
Good job as usual !
do you know when there will be a new "TD 27" drum serie?
I'm guessing late 2025. But I have no insider information to back that up.
Justin, would it be possible to do a run down of the best headphones for use with edrums? Never really hear much about them, considering how crucial they are to the entire experience.
4:18 is there any plan to do a demo for this kit?
I might go with the efnote flagship instead. The kit looks more like a real kit and just looks better
Great detailed video! You said at 15:40 “it supports 14 pads, more if you use cable splitters”. What do you mean by this? I can use a cable splitter and add another Tom? Or cymbal? TIA
Pretty much what you said, but I haven’t tried it. I always wondered how you control each pass independently through one input
It's just head and rim and programming them.
A little pain in the butt at first, but once you program and save it, you can have more cymbals, cow bells wood blocks, etc...
I'd rather just put extra cymbals... Etc... on a separate module.
I have a TD27 for the main kit, and the TD-17 for pretty much as many extra cymbals and stuff as I can fit....lol
Plus I have a TD6 if I go over that, which I haven't done.
Yet !!!!
Hahahahahahaha
I bought a Lekato edrum set and I have the TD6 going through that.
That set is really fun to play, especially since I put clamps and extra cymbals on it, and added a kick pad and my 10' hi hats on a stand.
I miss all the fun sounds on the TD6 so now I have it on a super compact set....lol
The TD6 is still better then most newer modules out there, especially for how old it is.
I like some of the snares more then the ones on the TD27 and the TD17.
Although, there's nothing better out there then the digital snare to play on as far as I have felt.
Have a great day !!!!!!
:-)
Here's hoping for a simplified version of this module to sit at the same tier as the TD-27!
Yeah like a V37 or something would be awesome. Because if we're honest, that's what the majority of people actually need more than this all out flagship module
I’m really torn between these new Roland’s and the Efnote pro. I’d like to get that Efnote pro 703X. It has the exact drum and cymbals set up I want. But I’m worried about Efnote durability. I owned a TD20 many years ago. Very satisfied. Wish I hadn’t sold it. Can anyone here vouch for Efnote construction quality? Is it comprable to the Roland V’s?
I would buy them just for the acoustic sounds of the pads. 😬
To this day, a custom converted kit running SD3 via an edrumin is still the best solution.
I don't totally agree. But I do love SD3, I use it on my custom converted kit every day. The sounds are extremely natural
I really really really don't understand the compulsion to make e-drums look like acoustic drums. They are bulky, and now you even have to protect their finishes. Buy drum cases too? If you join a band, every time you play a gig, you have to disassemble, pack, move, transport, move, set up, disassemble, pack, move and transport your drums every single time. For me, the smaller the better. Roland - give us a robust, compact kit that fits in a suitcase for crying out loud.
Do you see keyboard players bringing actual pianos and organs every time? They use a keyboard, for crying out loud. E-drummers, embrace your instrument! You ain't playing acoustic drums. Why do you want them to look like acoustic drums? Answer - insecurity.
Exactly. 👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
There are 3 models. 2 don’t look like acoustic drums.
Is there a chance you can transcribe or do a short video of what you play at 1:59? That's really nice!
Sextuplets with accents on the first beat moved round the toms.

Will that new 71 module work as a replacement for the the TD-27 on the VAD507 kit? Maybe I will upgrade the module if it's compatible
Yes
I hope Roland will release a successor AND upgraded version of TD 17 very soon. This version is definitely waaaaayyy out of my budget.
The TD17 is their oldest module in the lineup. So it would make sense. Don't know about timing though.
