he does use the kite as a brake, but i think leaving it behind him for a very long time is not really what he does. I think that he has really precise control of the kite path though the high lift zone above him, and sheets in and out to maintain an optimal kite speed: not too fast that it moves quickly away from the high lift zone, but not so slow that it stops providing lift.
