  • www.tilemasterg... Hi everyone . In my new clip I am showing how to build, waterproof and install shower bench "SEAT" from scratch using concrete blocks. This method is one of the safest and most durable to build in a wet area. Before starting on a shower, tile or bathroom remodeling project it is a good idea to research on how it can be done This project was done in Alpharetta GA.
    I hope my video will be useful during your own bathroom projects. Feel free to ask mw any questions and leave comments.
    My tips:
    1) Don't worry about the weight of concrete seat
    2) Avoiding regular studs and even treated in constructing your seat (I have remodeled many showers that had wooden seat and always it was rotten, moldy or causing leaks)

    couple things for people to look out for.. when constructing a shower.. that gets thousands of gallons dumped on it a wk... in order...set your block material in the appropriate configuration.. ie with cell openings facing vertically! (or use solid) you compromise almost all structural integrity otherwise (block 101) .. also.. tie your blocks into the existing framework (block ties) or set block prior to board and the drypacked pan (think like water and lap material accordingly). the bench substrate after is the "easy" way..the bench is free floating w this method and will separate from the wall in do time. if the pan is correctly installed .. or topical membrane for that matter.. there is no problem with water buildup. grout isnt waterproof.. your pan and membrane systems are meant to "breath" and "flush".. hence pan and weephole.. or topical membrane being "topical" water soaks in and evaporates out.. the latter more quickly do to less material depth. also.. ur wall tile should drop on top of ur detail edge bench tile..(part 2) not doing so allows easy access thru horizontal groutline of water.. to corner of bench dripping down between wall and free floating bench (not tied or keyed in)...starting the separation process.
    not a bad job.. please keep sharing....but those small differences add years and years.. that and keying thinset to wall and tile.. and wiping everything prior👌
    this ones free..next time ill charge.

    I like this idea
    , I used durock , mambrane , and one piece of granite on top , then I tile the walls ,
    I do not tile my benches , ( too many issues )

    Hi There,
    NEVER put blocks first !! - always on to of cement base.
    When blocks done before mortar base water eventually will get to space in the blocks causing water to stay there and mold problems.
    Cement blocks always go on top of Cement pan !!!

    This is why I am showing it !! and explaining why not in this clip>>>
    - If you want leaks, rotten wood and cracks - frame it !!
    - If you want bench to last for many years - use blocks and listen what I am saying in this clip !!! watch it before asking strange questions.....

    continued from below...
    wall tile needs to drop on top of edge bench tile(part 2).. not doin so creates vertical grout joint.. water will soak thru grout.. seep between bench and wall and start the separation process. (because theres no tie or key in)
    nice job.. please keep sharing.. but these small steps along w keying(i dont mean toothing w trowel tooth) thinset into wall and tile and wiping all prior.. this adds yyyears to your tile!
    thats all free.. next time i charge👌

      +fuckartthisismylife My shower has just what you are describing...a vertical grout joint and the water has soaked through the grout and is now pouring into my kitchen on the first floor! :-(. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I've called a few grout repair guys but non work on showers. I'm desperate, please help before my husband decides to try his hand at it. (NOOOOO!) He's already purchased the grout. LOL. This is an emergency. Any tips, videos, advice? ASAP PLEASE! HA!

      Queenie Brown was it resolved. that issue also means your bench wasn't waterproofed.

    A question: Why didn't you waterproof with membrane the floor corners and sides before installing the bench?

  • @hockeykv
    @hockeykv 11 років тому

    I was told to bring the pan liner 6-12 inches behind the block and up the wall. But when I look at DensShield website they mention not to put any liner behind their product because moisture will get stuck back there. What did you do behind your cinder block for a moisture barrier? Thanks for the video! We were thinking about framing with wood but after seeing this video that's a no brainer.

    Yes I guess this is a strange question considering BOTH your partition walls are framed with dens shield on it. So doing it on the bench is no good. I have 10 year old shower with framed bench no leaking, no cracking tile and shower are just fine. I gues you just have to know how to build...

    great video. How did you deal with the floor pitch and the wall? It would create a gap between the blocks and the wall. Thank you for making this video.

    thinking about using blocks. Question the liner that you extended above the blocks how did you attack the board at the bottom? and not pierce the liner?

  • @tileformiles
    @tileformiles 11 років тому

    Dude, this is the way to go. Framed benches are no good unless you are using wire and mortar with hydroban on top.

  • @hockeykv
    @hockeykv 11 років тому

    I was also told to set the block before doing a mud bed. I noticed you did it afterwards. Is this the best option to avoid water issues?

  • @TileMasterGa
    @TileMasterGa  11 років тому

    Well, if you will bring pan liner about 20" high behind seat nothing will happened - Denshild still have plenty room to breath. It is highly not recommended to do moisture barrier on entire walls if using Denshield.
    You also have to remember to waterproof section of the wall behind seat with membrane and mesh tape - the way I am presenting on this videos . . !
    Pan liner is not the only product to waterproof behind seat - it defiantly helps, but there is more to the story....

  • @rhondaphelps64
    @rhondaphelps64 12 років тому

    How do you run the vinyl liner that high above the seat at the back and the sides? Is this all one piece? It seems there would be a huge amount of liner if you folded the corners. Thanks

    Can you do this in an existing shower? How would that change the technique?

  • @mpeff8026
    @mpeff8026 11 років тому

    Why not frame the shower. then dens shield and hyrdro ban over top of that. This would be a water proof shower also. Any reason why you don't use that practice?

    I know this video is 10+ years old, but I'll ask my question anyways. :)
    If the shower pan is pre-sloped to 1/4" per foot, wouldn't that make the backs of the cinder blocks sloped away from the wall, touching only in the corner at the floor, and having a gap of nearly 3/8" at the top? How do you deal with that gap? Will filling it with thinset really be enough protection from water?

    • @adamsaquatics3332
      @adamsaquatics3332 Рік тому

      Also a late response, you can level with the thin set OR fill it in.

  • @321edr
    @321edr 9 років тому

    The floor you put the cement blocks on, has a 1/4 of an inch slop per 1 foot (i believe) so how do you handle this issue.
    Thanks for the great video

    I had shower benches installed......but then we had to cut them back to accommodate the shower glass.
    We hired my handyman to do cut back the bench and a registered contractor validate the integrity of the shower pan.
    My worry now is how they are ceiling the cut-back portion of the bench before they re-tile. They are using red-guard.
    I would love to share my photos.....but dont know how.....just really worried.
    Help!

    Please use durrock if you want to do it hard way!!!
    I am using more modern type of underlayment - Dens-Guard. Works same or even better plus is easier to work with!!!
    Durrock is not 100% waterprooffed , dens-guar is!!

    I’m pretty sure this is how the “contractor” that remodeled the bathroom in our master before we bought our house placed a “bench” beneath the window of our shower. We had water coming in from both sides. Through the window seal, and through the stupid slate tile top they decided to use. Stone is porous, especially when it isn’t sealed. I don’t even know how to rectify the damage this idiot caused in this house. Also no cement board and no waterproofing beneath the slate tile floor. Cracked tiles and no grout left. Water just pours through the floor. It’s a living nightmare. This was with two seprate inspections. They even used FLAT paint in the baths and kitchen 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Oh and the bathrooms not bathroom window is the one they blocked up with glass blocks. No extractor or exhaust fan. Nightmare for new homeowners. There ought to be lemon laws for houses.
