This was one of the most underrated gems on the PS2. It felt like such a meticulously crafted labour of love. Unlike so many games that feel like "paint-by-numbers" corporate products, this one had a real soul. The fact that the game was set in the 18th century well after the heyday of the samurai gave it a sense of melancholy. These were guys training to become perfect warriors in order to fight against each other in tournaments because they no longer had wars to give their lives meaning.

Don't remember a colourfull rainbow which was always black and white. The review was right, its a mediocre game and a wasted opportunity.

Game was honestly underrated, I do appreciate it because it does captivate the essence of a Samurai. Train and Better yourself, Master your discipline your school that is. Challenge other schools prove your skill. Enter the imperial tournament and put your life behind your blade. Simply Bushido, of course more can be added to it but given what we got I personally love it along with Bushido blade 2. These games need a remake with a overhaul.

Is this the game where you got to train by chopping down bamboo and standing under a waterfall as a test your strength style mini game in between samurai dueling ? If so I loved this game. !!!

The fighting mechanics, while at first seem deceptively simplistic, actually had a layer of complexity when you reach a certain skill level. It's a shame none of my friends were interested in this game, as I feel like it could have been really fun pushing the fighting mechanics to its limits, in both skill and strategy. I remember only scratching the surface of the custom combo feature before moving onto other games at the time, and thinking it still had a lot of potential.

videochemist There probably is a lot more to dive into if you give it the time, I personally felt like my patience ran out before I could do so.

It’s really all about building your ideal move set and mastering the special finisher move. Legit beating this without using dirty tricks is tough as nails and feels like a real achievement. I loved it.

Came here after my brother saw me playing ghost of tsushima and said he thought it played a lot like this game he used to play when he was younger

The concept of growth in this game should be in Ghosts of Tsushima along with the mini games and features that would be cool

Me and my friends would fight eachother every day on this game. My best charachter was Gettan but everyone had good moves. You weren't a true master until you beat the board guy in the candle room. He was the 30th fighter in single player arcade mode. If you've never seen him he is the guy who slaps your shoulder with the 2x4 during meditation.

Actually the same, me and my friends would play the vs mode over and over there is incredible depth when dealing with a human opponent, we developed multiple metas. From quick strikes to counter high stances to feign wars I never really get to talk to other people who got as hard into the game as about 8 of my friends and I growing up. I'm very happy to see at least another group with similar memories, unless your name is Aaron.

Bro this was a gem and I remember it from when I was in my PS2 days and it was fun for the time, my nephew loves fighting games so I recommend it for him, if you're into retro fighting it's perfect if not then it's a hard pass

ah, i miss standing under a waterfall in naught but my knickers and rapidly wobbling my elbows about. never understood exactly what i was meant to be doing in that minigame.
good review! my feelings are more or less the same… there are the bones of something really interesting and unique here, but not enough material to really pull you in and make you want to keep playing (oh, and it was hard as BALLS, at least when i was in my early teens and had the patience of a dragonfly with adhd)

Kengo 2 was a lot better with huge amounts of depth. It was released in the UK as Sword of the Samurai. (Not to be confused with Way of the Samurai, which was a vert different game.)

This game was soooo hard to find. Found one at K Mart in 2001

I was excited to try this since people called it a spiritual successor to Bushido Blade, but couldn't get into it. Felt real clunky and at first. When I played Dark Souls years later, the amount of patience needed reminded me of this game, but getting better at Kengo never felt rewarding to me, unlike Dark Souls.

This game is great. The first time I unintentionally killed a dojo master with a boken and got jumped by his students and crossed real blades with them is still one of my most memorable gaming WTF moments!

There's a couple direct sequels to Kengo, yeah? Any idea of how they compare to this one? I'm looking to play one a bit on a PS2 emulator.
