I got into this game because I was a big fan of the way of the samurai games. They go into much deeper detail with the sword styles and each of the games had some great storytelling.
Got a copy of this game when I was really young on a holiday once. I kept reading the instruction manual over and over, excited to get home to play it. I wasn't disappointed. Still one of my favorite games. I replay it every couple of years.
My first thought seeing this was that it looked like Way of the Samurai. Good to know they are related! I look forward to seeing what you think of the original game. I got that one used as a kid not expecting it to be any good, and ended up playing it over and over again for weeks essentially trying to 100% it.
Holy moly, didn't think this game would get covered on this channel. It's such a hidden gem, and I almost had a copy for a good price but lost the auction 😭😭
I'm glad I still have mine somewhere. I picked mine up for like $5 back when the PS3 was still considered "new". I genuinely can't stand how expensive the "retro" market has become, my jaw dropped seeing a game I bought complete for so little is worth 60 times as much now. It's utterly ridiculous.

Great Review! You perfectly encapsulated what makes the game such a joy to play. I would like to note that the game actually does have a dedicated lock on button, its just mapped to R2. The game doesnt tell you about it at all, which is dumb, but it is there
The entire time I was watching this video I kept thinking "This looks like Way of the Samurai. Those models look familiar, this game is faster paced but the font and menus look straight from it." So I was very happy to learn it's a spin-off. Definitely need to track this one down because I know it'll be a ride.
am still pissed there was never a sequel to this or somehow a remake, the game was way too unique and the amount of times i finished it were too many. its even more funny how i got it solely by the name and the cover and actually ended up really liking it.
I had a lot of fun with this game as a kid. I was stupid to have sold it for dirt cheap only for years later to rebuy it when it was a lot more expensive. Either way I'm glad it's back in my collection.
I love this game. Bought it on a whim at a used game store for.... more than I'd have liked (about 80 USD), but was worth every penny once I got into it. It's Devil May Cry meets Red Dead Revolver, and it got me to pick up Way of the Samurai as well which I need to get more into (thankfully that one was a lot cheaper lol). The dress up and sheer variety of stuff in the game was delightful, and it absolutely nails that sort of weird 90s/00s alt-Western anime vibe. Glad to see it getting love.
Gonna be getting a Japanese PS2 and a SEGA Saturn when I fly to Japan later this month. It's thanks to you that I'm starting to get back into collecting PS2 games. I swear there was another game about a samurai going through a western world and cutting everyone with their katana but on PS1 instead of PS2. I think it was called 'Samurai Gunman' or something.
This is a truly underrated game on the PS2. I don’t know why I didn’t play this, cause I’d enjoy this a lot as a kid. Like who doesn’t want to play a samurai fighting outlaws in the old west.
Having just played the Kamiwaza PS4 port I'm so glad they used that same dodge mechanic in a combat focussed game. This looks so rad although it's unfortunate that the bosses seem to suffer from the same issues as Kamiwaza - bad/no telegraphing and hit stunning
YES!!! What makes the combat even more satisfying is that while you're deflect ability hits enemies sometimes, hitting the bullets with regular attacks hits them every time, so there's a great risk vs reward mechanic there. It even works when you're using the DT ability which allows you to reflect everything regardless of the firing speed like Jean's Gatling Gun. Also, the unlockables have stats boosts which aren't super interesting on lower difficulties, but really help on higher levels and on the challenges like finishing with taking no damage, or in record speed which can all be done in different attempts. You can level them up with the coins you get on the levels and there are set bonuses "like the one that makes you look like a locomotive that increases your movement speed). You can unlock basically every character in the game to play as a skin of your character, including the children and there's even a few secret levels you can get that have story related cutscenes. It's a great game to come back every now and then and find something new.
