I choose to believe that is also part of history. Seriously, if you're a mighty warlord with thousands of men under your command, why would you NOT order your ninja girls to wear revealing armour? Besides, the distration is probably going to protect them better than whatever low-tier crap the combatants with the lowest societal rank were provided anyway.

Seeing this game brings me back to the launch of the PS2. So many titles. Great review!
This game had its rough spots for sure but I wished they continued building on it in the sequels. Once I learned the game continued even if you lose a fight I fell in love.
The branching paths is one of the coolest additions to a game like this that I've seen

If koei moved to America this would be better than Total War by a landslide. Shit kessen 2 is better.

Played the crap out of the Kessen games as a kid, i had all 3 on the ps2. The first one was a bit rough yet it was enjoyable, but RTS games have always struggled on consoles so that could had easy contributed to it. I love military type games so i enjoyed this one despite not knowing about the actual history. So someone who likes these type of games can enjoy it without knowing the real historical stuff behind it. The other 2 Kessen games did improve vastly on many aspects.
I just came here to learn about Kessen before playing it and now I'm subbed. Cool review! I can't wait to play now.
That's the most aggressive handshake I've seen since Predator.
The soundtrack in this game is awesome. I really wish this concept were revisited and maybe for PC. I would love myself a story based "Total War ish game" but on grander scale battlefields where commanders leads armies of thousands and the outcome might depend on their mood and personalities. I don't mind realism and slow pace. The idea of Kessen is great, the only problem is that the game was the first of its kind on a now very old and limited system. Proper planning and decisionmaking where the player actually has a choise would also be appreciated. Kessen 3 improved on these things to a degree and was way more fun gameplay wise as it was an actual game and not an interactive movie more or less:P But it also felt smaller and arcady. Kessen has a very special place in my heart though as the game got me into Total War. And got me interested in the Sengoku Jidai era and Japanese history.
And yeah! Fuck Kobayakawa! BTW the slowdown is an emulation issue. It runs fine on PS2 hardware, but there is a bug on the latest revision of the PS2 slim (SCPH 9000 series) where the battlesound never stops and plays over cutscenes the entire time after battles until the game is restarted:/ Kessen and a handful of other early PS2 releases and some PS1 titles has various issues with the latest PS2 slim.
There is never a single redeeming thing about Kobayakawa in any form of media.

Shibusawa is the oldest head honcho of Koei. He and his wife have produced historical simulations throughout 80s/90s.
It's pretty understandable that they REALLY like their history.

Even reading his foreword in Kessen, I could basically feel his excitement to have western audiences learn more about this period in japan.

@@WREPS2GOG His wife, Keiko Erikawa, basically invented the idea of "girl games" or Otome.
She was pretty unsatisfied having no women working at Koei as well as Koei not marketing to female demographic. She released the first every Otome Angelique, which opened up a whole new segment to video game.
She was also a producer on many of Koei's popular games.
If you ask me, she is a model strong female game dev inspiring other females to join the industry. She belongs to the higher tier in the list of influential game industry persons.

Thanks for the vid man. I'm a huge fan of samurais and the sengoku period history , tho i don't like RTSs , i will give this a try , just bc the history and the knowledge. And yea the Tokugawa legacy was the most important one , tho i preffer some other faces as Nobunaga , or Masamune , tho he wasn't such a big big face but , he did stuff. Just keep in mind that it's technically an alternate "What if" story, that also explores certain scenarios as they could have unfolded had things happened differently during that time. So there's probably more "alt history" in this game than actual history.

The original Kessen was a unique beast. Never seen anything quite like it before, or since. And flawed though it was, I wish we had another game like it as the sequels simply were not the same thing.

I remember this game, I remember not understanding a lot of the mechanics due to me being like 7 at the time. But I LOVED the ability cutscenes. Also, the frame drops were a problem even on ps2.
Honestly digging the voice acting :o
I played it on OG hardware and the frame drop issues are very frequent.

IIRC, while I never played Kessen on PS2 hardware, the slowdowns you mentioned are most probably emulation issue - on PS2, a graphical lag wouldn't result in audio also getting slowed down and distorted
Fukushima was a whole as bitch. I ended up just taking him off my team because he would constantly refuse my orders. Also the game wasn’t balanced at all with cannonade being OP as hell. Loved this game
there was a lot of chugging in the original hardware too. it's not an emulation issue, it's a rendering issue.
Fukushima and Yi were my boys.

I'm playing Nioh and It seems like it deals with the same era of Japanese history with many of the same characters. Although from the looks of it you seem to have walked away with a better understanding of the situation than me.

That's pretty cool, Nioh's been sitting on my shelf for a while, been meaning to play it.
I'm currently going in order of release so I will get to Steambot Chronicles, but it'll take a long time. However as with all things, I might change up how I decide which games to review.

First 2 Kessens were great, put a lot of time into them, but they were buggy as anything haha. I remember this being the only console game I've ever seen just crash and reset!

I rented this game back in the day and the attack cutscenes are the only thing I remember of it. Even early into the PS2's lifetime, those animations really got tiring within the first two hours from the repetition.
Yeah, I really was skipping every battle cutscene at a certain point.
