The Retro Game with the Most Realistic Sword Fighting?

  • Most video game designers don't research practical martial arts techniques, and of course they don't have to. "It's just a video game", who cares... Well, some players do. It's nice to also see down-to-earth, realistic animations and reasonably sized weapons every now and then.
    People often ask me which game has the most realistic combat, and the obvious candidates that come to mind are Mount & Blade, Chivalry, War of the Roses, and even Dark Souls to a degree.
    In my opinion the most accurate representation of real-life sword fights (before the release of Kingdom Come: Deliverance) are to be found in a Ps1 game from 1997, Bushido Blade.
    It has 8 different weapons:
    - Katana
    - Rapier (with an oddly short blade)
    - Naginata
    - Sledgehammer (not exactly a standard weapon)
    - Nodachi
    - "Long sword" (really more of a spadroon)
    - Saber (basically a Chinese dao)
    - "Broadsword" (strange hybrid of a greatsword and a claymore, quite inaccurate in both name, shape and weight)
    The duels in Bushido Blade show the importance of correct distance and timing, just like in historical swordsmanship. Wildly flailing the weapon from side to side works well enough in many games (*cough* Skyrim *cough*) but here it doesn't get you very far.

    I am so glad this game is remembered for this. I loved this game and desperately wished other games would follow suit with the disabling of limbs, etc. The idea of health bars that slowly deplete while retaining full movement seemed quite silly after this game. But alas, not many games followed suit. I would love to see Dark Souls with such a mechanic.

    • @purpledragon2442
      @purpledragon2442 7 років тому +4

      The only game that really comes to mind is the deadliest warrior game apart from some silly mini games. You get limbs that can be disabled or outright cut off. Oh! Bio freaks also has detachable limbs but that's no where near realistic😂

    • @DBZHGWgamer
      @DBZHGWgamer 7 років тому +3

      As he said in the video, its actually not that realistic to have disable limbs in the middle of a fight. Adrenaline would keep you standing or swinging through the hit. And if you actually got hit hard enough somewhere that you couldn't use physically that limb, you're dead anyways, because that would lead to massive blood loss very quickly.

    Mount & Blade: WB may have quite restricted animations and ways to move, but when compared to other games, it's the most realistic one I can possibly think:
    - Crushthroughs on mauls
    - Shield size actually matters when fighting archers or crossbowmen
    - Couching lances
    - Chambering
    - Cut, thrust and blunt are good against specific armor types
    How many games have all that?

      Kebabscout Not to mention you can feint attacks (very common and realistic technique); you have stances: Ochs if you wind up a thurst, Oberhut if you wind up an overhead; weapons have realistic range and speed.
      Skallagrim is so wrong on this one.

    • @stepover12
      @stepover12 9 років тому +16

      It's restriction on the moves that makes M&B realistic, you cannot twirl around like in Chivalry, you cannot jump and do weird fancy moves, that is a plus in the realism department.

      Aside from regenerative health, you can parry a zweihander or maul with a tiny dagger with no issues, you can make the character spin as fast as you want thus getting you an unparriable flurry of strikes, no issue with daggers penetrating a full plate armor ..

      TomatoBreadOrgasm I know exactly. Like the last update was 3 weeks ago I think. If I'm not mistaken, they made the AI more intelligent and more natural. Like it would take them a little bit longer to realize an enemy is nearby. They would no longer home in on you instantly and that makes it easier to use stealth and take them by surprise. Small updates like these are very cool and all, but I need them to work on bigger updates like a story mode (they have been talking about that for a while now). But, it is one of my favorite PC games and I wish the devs (which is like 3 people I think) won't give up on this game.

    My favorite weapon and stance is the Katana in low guard. this offers very little defense as the sword is held behind the player, but offers some great underhanded slashing / lunging combos.
    Have you ever heard of a PC game called 'DIE BY THE SWORD'?
    This game offers a very realistic combat system called VSIM. where the player has full control over the blade using the numeric keypad. (ie: pressing 6 then 4 will swing the sword from right to left.) (pressing 8 then 2 will swing the sword from top to bottom.)
    It is very realistic, as you can decapitate or dismember your opponents. You can even pick up their dropped limbs and weapons and use them to bludgeon your opponents.

  • @SPOONCorp
    @SPOONCorp 9 років тому +67

    Look up "Blade Symphony", its a third person sword fighting game, in an asian setting. There's three stances, and many classes of weapons, but some of the combat is very unrealistic. (i.e. jumping high into the air to perform a spinning move on your opponent) Apart from those kinds of things though, I recommend you review it. Also, my opinion on the combat of "War of the Roses" is a strong one, as I've played hundreds of hours. The weapons are all fully in-game physically, which means they cannot phase through other weapons or armors. It's a game that requires real reflexes and footwork, and it would be awesome if you would review it.

    • @RedWurm
      @RedWurm 9 років тому +8

      My issue with games like War of the Roses or Mount and Blade is the first/third person character control - you're basically a camera with a sword on the front. There's little consideration of how character moves or is positioned, you just charge up an attack and release in range, then quickly strafe or backpedal away. Ironically that's one of the things I think is very well implemented mounted combat in those games.

    • @Nuvizzle

      Blade Symphony is pretty flawed in all of the areas Bushido Blade got spot on - a lot of the time Blade Symphony comes down to "death by a thousand cuts" because it's so difficult to land a lethal blow with the relatively slow and clunky animations heavy stance has (let alone a tier 2-3 attack), while some fast attacks are near impossible to react to meaning you always have to be on guard - because of the gamey nature of its combat you can't transition fluidly from attack to defense; while a heavier attack will break through a lighter one, only one weapon can feint out of an attack windup and that weapon for whatever reason cannot guard, so if they simply hit you first your attack will be canceled - and heavy attacks are SIGNIFICANTLY slower, so you have ample time to react and cancel them as they start up if you just play passively.
      Bushido Blade had fast, non-flashy (for the most part), fluid animations, and most importantly combat was very lethal. Low lethality and preference for fast spam moves made Blade Symphony overly defensive and forced the devs to add in even more ridiculously gamey stuff like the charge up dash just to get people to play more actively rather than passively waiting for openings. I really wanted Blade Symphony to be the next Bushido Blade when I first saw it, but it's really not.
      But beyond all of that, overall I simply can't get behind any sword fighting system where you "charge up" strong attacks - where is the logic that holding a sword above your head longer is going to make you swing harder? If anything your arms will get tired and your swing will be weak.
      Huh, I wrote a bit more than I thought I would for a UA-cam comment.

    Ah Bushido Blade, I remember playing it in a lecture hall at Vaticon in UCD in 1998, standing on the front row of tables, game larger than life on the projector screen. I remember winning a string of fights by dropping in a low stance and attacking high to the head with the rapier right from the start... unless the other player made an immediate defensive action they we're out. So after that every fight began with people hoping backwards out of instant head shot range. Which made for more interesting fights.
    Skallagrim says in the video that hits to your dominant hand don't have any result, but if I recall correctly it lowered the power of attacks, non-fatal hits to the head lowered accuracy and hits to the body lowered overall speed.
    I might be wrong about that but I remember one fight in which both myself and the other player had selected the two fast but weak female characters, had given them sledgehammers and then had a fight that just wouldn't end.
    Once we lost the use of our legs and left arm, and had taken a number of glancing blows to the body, arms and head we just couldn't get enough ummph into the attacks to kill the other player.

      Yeah, I have *cough* over 200 hours on Deadliest Warrior, and it's definitely not a realistic fighting simulator, but what makes me enjoy it so much is that it is legitimately skill based. When I started playing I usually got KTDs of like 1-10, but now it's more like 2-1. I just like that you can really learn the mechanics of the game and test your skill against other people who have done the same.

    Also the sparing injuries for bushido blade are nice concept to keep

    I miss bushido blade. I do hope for a faithful modern remake or clone.
    My favorite battle was when a friend was visiting. He took my legs out from under me and I rolled away, and in a moment of desperation I rolled toward him and swung my katana wildly. I tagged him right in the head and ended the fight. We laughed so hard when it happened...
    I'm tired of playing games where it takes 5-10 hits to the head to kill a foe with a blade or gun... It's good when implemented well, but in most games enemies are only there to waste your time and the quickly overstay their welcome. If a fight takes forever and your strategy and skill cannot help, the game becomes a painful drag instead of fun. So I appreciate the addition of games where a skillful shot or strategic/tactical exploit will quickly end the fight. Realism in games is great when it serves this purpose, designed to make the game more interesting and fun (instead of more realistic only for the sake of realism).
    I'll watch for Kingdom Come: Deliverance; could be a lot of fun. I've also been meaning to try Mount & Blade, War of the Roses, and related games. Thanks for the recommendations, Skallagrim!

      Daniel Hale Yeah, I don't like bullet sponges in fps games either. It just makes the weapons feel like toys.

    • @danielhale1
      @danielhale1 9 років тому +1

      Exactly, that's a really good way to put it.
      I remember watching you play (I think) War of the Roses or one of those similar games, and remarking on how *satisfying* it was to see you use a bow or crossbow. Shooting someone with a crossbow mattered; it was devastatingly powerful, as you would expect a face shot to be. Putting a sword or warhammer through their head was equally effective, and you clearly felt like you were wielding a real weapon; likewise, the enemy was a serious threat to you too, and you had to be wise.
      Too many games have you tickle fight your foes for around 30 to 60 seconds with a toy sword before they have the decency to fall down. Then you fight yet more identical foes. This goes on and on... Doesn't feel like I'm actually effective or important. Games too often are just stuffed with padding, when they could do so much more with a decisive (and consequently more realistic) combat system.

      An HD remake or straight-across port of the Bushido Blade games to the Sony PS Vita handheld would be welcome! Sony ported these PS1 favorites (along with others like Einhander) to their PSN store in Japan, but not to the stores in North America or Europe. Come on, share this! Playing PS1 games on the PSP handheld is fun, although the PSP's single awkward stick and only two shoulder buttons can make controlling these PS1 ports difficult. The PSP stick lacks the precision of the PS1 dual stick controller. Play the timed flying levels in Spyro the Dragon and you'll see. But games like Resident Evil 2, Silent Hill, Metal Slug X, etc. work well within the PSP's constraints.

      I recently puttered about in Overgrowth with my brother for a bit and had fun with the freestyle fights. That's really all we could do though -- the basic combat system is fascinating, but everything else is apparently very under-developed. It would be neat if they spent a bit of time patching in a quick Bushido Blade style story mode where you take on a series of opponents through a simple narrative.

    Hi @Skallagrim! I would love it if you can release a video about Mount and Blade. At the beginning I can see that you are playing the Viking Conquest DLC, which combat-wise is definitely an improvement over the vanilla Warband. By the time you released this video (Jan 2015) the Viking Conquest DLC still had a lot of bugs to be ironed out. But now after the release of Reforge edition and updates following that (current version is 2.025) the Viking Conquest DLC has been finalized in all regards and is definitely worth another go if you have only played the pre-Reforged versions.
    Best of luck,

    I absolutely love this fighting game, so different from any titles that has come before/after this and never been seen since! I really wish out of all the games being remade for next gen gaming, that Bushido Blade can get the recognition it deserves with all the graphical/UI, SFX/speed of gameplay updates it desperately needs.
    Just imagine if you could battle online, I think it would be both entertaining yet insane because of the high risk/high reward system of being strategic rather than button smashing. The music is just f-ing awesome and doesn't need to be changed at all. Also the jumping mechanic was so hard to do, but when I did it, it was a miracle to pull off! The 1st POV mode was unique, Slash mode was fun af

      I disliked how they removed a lot of the aforementioned mechanics, but I was especially disappointed by the fact that they removed the parry mechanic. They also made it so that the triangle button didn't do anything. Like _c'mon,_ I could at least understand removing parrying if they replaced it with something new; that's a whole-ass button that they just left functionless! Oh, and there were also a few particularly annoying bosses, but otherwise the game was pretty damn enjoyable. They just made some weird and slightly irritating design choices, imo.

    got about 1300 hours in M&B wb and I can honestly say while it doesn't LOOK that realistic, the combat is very real. Footwork and knowledge of distance are essential, countering and feinting are a large part of higher level play and blocking, chambering and glancing are supremely important. Oh yea and the damage is based on momentum which is very important.
    I cant really explain the feeling I get in a fight when im playing M&B to someone who hasn't played. Theres really nothing but your skill versus the other persons, and its intense and liberating knowing that one mistake and .3 seconds is all it takes for you to lose. Also highly highly frustrating when you just start the game and don't know what youre doing, M&B punishes inexperience very hard, much like real life combat.
    Don't even get me started on competitive team battles, that's a whole nother beast the really changes your strategy altogether.

    Try Mount n Blade + Brytenwalda Mod. They added
    Critical strikes which allows for 1 hit kills
    Adrenaline - which can heal you during battle (or better say keep you going)
    Bleeding - if you get wounded you will start to bleed out - which may cause you to get KOed / "die" without getting hit again
    Stumbling
    Stamina System - you can run out of steam...and thats really bad ^^
    Weapon breaking - which can be quite annoying but realisticly doesnt happen too often but forces you to actually have 2 melee weapons instead of 2 quivers^^
    Weather effects that may affect certain weapons like bows
    And of course changed damage type of weapons like now axes do piercing damage and can damage people in mail perfectly while swords struggle more with armor
    they also made the hitboxes better so an open helmet will count as armor if hit on the helmet but count as unarmored if hit in the face - making aiming more important

      A good fighter would probably go into a parry as soon as they saw the enemy was attacking, so a double parry would be more likely than a double stab.
      That said, duel victors have died the day after from wounds they'd recieved in the fight.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  9 років тому +15

      ***** Yes, that is indeed possible, even in case of skilled fighters. There are reports of rapier duels for instance where one receives a thrust through the torso and then runs his opponents through with his own rapier.

    • @jasonslade6259
      @jasonslade6259 9 років тому +4

      Keep in mind, thrusts though the torso can be not-immediately-fatal or even all that incapacitating in the short term but kill you within a few minutes from internal bleeding and what not. You see it a lot with small caliber gunshot wounds as well.
      Wouldn't be all that hard for somebody to "win" a sword fight and then drop dead from their wounds shortly after.

    I remember having a lot of fun with this game growing up, though it was a bit broken in a few ways. Some weapons just did next to no dmg and seemed to hit but not kill more than others. One of the worst was the naginata spear like thing. It had this multi stab move that you could spam pretty effectively, it was a some what cheap attack. The thing is it would only wound people for the part and rarely kill. You could chain it one after another, all hitting their chest without a kill. Some times you'd knock them around the map time after time but they just wouldn't die. yet almost any graze from the Katana was a kill.

    • @ilyasbasuki3207
      @ilyasbasuki3207 6 років тому +1

      I think it's a problem with the angle or something and not the weapon. I once had a really long match where I hit the opponent multiple times without killing them. Then in the next match, I killed the same opponent with the same weapon in just one hit.

    I loved the shit out of Bushido Blade. Played that for hours. It really needs a modern successor. The going through the stages was about getting the "good ending." The people that you where escaping from where your friends and comrades with in a under ground fighting organization. You had to escape and kill the leader for whatever reason. You have a chase all the way to the sewer and then injure the person so they can't follow, do that right then beat everyone else "honorably" and you will get the good ending.

      Honestly PS1-era 3D games look like crap. I even thought they looked like crap when they were first released. The polygons are too enormous to ignore, everything is incredibly blocky. 3D games didn't really come into their own, graphics wise, until the PS2 and Dreamcast.
      They don't have the timeless quality that 6 bit or even some 8 bit sprites have. The few PS1 era games that actually used 2D spirtes like Darkstalkers looked amazing as well.

      Jason Slade I love the blockiness of FF7, wouldnt change it at all. After you start to delve into the game you no longer notice it and the that is what use to make cutscenes so much better. You could sit back and watch and be in awe. Now there really are no more cutscenes and the bastards make me hit buttons during it lol. I agree with you on the ps2, So much smoother and better, (see Soul Reaver series for good comparison) But I really think some thing was Lost when graphics became so much more important. Game makers stopped caring about content. Look at Oblivion to Skyrim, The Final Fantasy series that made it a success to the horrible stuff they do now.

      Midwest Mage "Look at Oblivion to Skyrim." Okay, I'm looking. Skyrim is better in nearly every way I can imagine. Its only failings over Oblivion are its weaker main story, and a disappointing lack of Captain Picard.

    • @midwestmage7173
      @midwestmage7173 9 років тому

      No way, content wise it falls off a cliff. Oblivion roam the map, find so many different quests. Check that farm house, BAM, magical ice sword after slaying goblins. Follow a river, straight to a group of people run out of their home and need your help. Skyrim has its merits, but the world just isnt filled or at least created to make exploring more satisfying.

      and again that was a direct connection to game makers having more time to fill it, because they didnt have to spend as much time making it Look as amazing as possible.

    I loved this game, I remember getting it cheap from a pawnshop and was impressed how much fun it was, there have actually been a few games with similair concepts, the way of the samurai games had swords with different styles and attacks which was neat, and there was another samurai game set sometime after the meiji era i think that had you pick and choose and basically build your own sword style by selecting different attacks and techniques

    Never thought about "Mount & Blade" as a game with 'realistic' fighting. It allways seemed to me that there are many more realistic representations of fencing in videogames. But it turnes out that there is no any, since this 'Bushido' is old and other games that were mentioned are not as good as "M&B" in my opinion. It is wierd and disappointing discovery. :(

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 9 років тому +4

      Well the main thing that makes M&B combat "realistic" is the way it plays out, making you think about your strikes, momentum, positioning, and forcing you to pay constant attention to what your opponent is doing and be ready to react in a split second.
      The actual animations and sword play itself are as basic and clunky as they get, but the mechanics of it do well at imitating how a fight works.

    • @creepercraft123abc
      @creepercraft123abc 9 років тому

      UnknownSquid The animations are very fluent. A big part of the realistic effect is how weapons and hit areas and armor all determine the outcome of each blow. Swing positioning is important. For example, overhead is powerful, but limited in range and slower than a lefthand swing, which is limited in range but less so than the overhead, et cetera. Thrusts are ineffective in some weapons as they glance like they would in real life.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 9 років тому +1

      Creeper Astley
      Well I didn't mean to say that the animations are poor in quality or anything. And I understand that. Hence why I was praising it for "making you think about your strikes, momentum, positioning," etc.
      The actual motions or "moves" involved in the combat are as basic and rudimentary as it gets though. You get only four attack directions with any weapon, and only three with many. And the swings are always precisely the same animation every time, with the combatant always standing bolt upright and with very little use of body weight.
      This doesn't mean they're bad. Not at all. They do their job of replicating the highly reactive and fluid nature of a fight perfectly. But you can't deny that it tends to look like a more mobile "rock em sock robots" battle.
      It is an intentional and well designed limitation though. M&B was/is successful for replicating how a fight plays out and how it feels. By only providing very limited options, and not over complicating things with more varied animations or attack types, it allows the players to better perceive the fight. You can learn the animation cues for four attacks much easier than you can twelve, and thus actually react to them in realtime. So whilst it's slightly abstracted, visually, the combat flows very realistically.

      ***** uh no. We are talking about different games. The one i am talking about is a one on one fighting game like bushido blade. Look it up as deadliest warriors Xbox live. Srarch for a video on UA-cam at least. Tell me what you think then.

      Andrea Giongiani Ah, that one. I thought you meant the Deadliest Warrior version of Chivalry.

    • @kyleflanagan963
      @kyleflanagan963 9 років тому +2

      ***** I agree with Andrea, the Deadlist Warrior fighting game was based almost totally off Bushido Blade except it was updated pretty much exactly as you said you'd like to see happen with Bushido Blade. They mess up some things, and some of the mechanics are unrealistic, but as a whole it is a fun little experience. It's been a while since I've played it, but I believe that they replaced the high-mid-low stances with 3 different weapons that your warrior holds (like the viking gets an axe, his sword, and a throwing spear). There are some historical problems, but oddly enough it seems like the makers of the game actually did their research better than the actual show.
      I don't think it's as well polished as Bushido Blade was, but it's fun and worth a look, IMO. The one thing that it improves upon is that it does a much better job as showing when a blow was just a glancing blow (in Bushido I sometimes felt like my hit should have bifurcated a person but they were fine) and even a glancing blow can be fatal after a while since they have a sort of blood-loss meter, so if you take out the guys legs they will die after a few seconds (but if they are good they can still kill you before they bleed out).

    • @HouseLyrander
      @HouseLyrander 9 років тому

      ***** If he's talking about the Spike Games one, then don't bother man. That thing is a buggy luckfest. You don't actually have any real control over your attacks (you just make high/middle/low attacks and pray that your character obeys) and the fighting and gore are so over the top that it shoots past hilarious in to groan worthy.

    I'm so glad you showed some of the second group of fighters. I was beginning to think I was crazy. I got to them once and the guy with the gun got a free kill cause I didn't know what was happening. I got my revenge and fought the other 5 after him, but I have never made it back to them since. How do you get to them? I've always wondered. Is it like a special secret you have to do? lol I actually for a while thought you just had to literally be a perfect fighter and follow the ways of bushido, cause that's what the game always said at the end of the story mode

  • @espialga7183
    @espialga7183 8 років тому

    If you're looking for a newer game with similar fighting mechanics (stances, proper cuts, articulate weapons, etc.), I've found Kengo to be a quite entertaining sword fighting games. Just as you said about Bushido Blade, Kengo also has alot of over exaggerated things for the sake of gameplay (like that rapid 20 stabs in five seconds lol) but it also can be punished with a very severe or fatal attack to the head or chest. Unlike Bushido Blade, you can also bleed to death depending on where you were cut and you can even use evasions or throw your opponent off balance and destroy them. There isn't a huge variety of weapons, but each character has their own discipline and school that you can challenge in the story mode. You can also teach your character the techniques of the school you defeated. The other I was going to say was Deadliest Warriors. Aside from the ridiculous headshot pin to the wall with a Javelin, you can also bleed to death, damage or cut off a limb, various weapons, and depending on how many times you were hit, the severity of the blow, and/or the weapon you were hit with, you will die. Each warrior also has a fatality style attack when your opponent is low on health and will trigger a cutscene in which you brutally kill your opponent upon successfully landing the strike. There's also a stamina bar and your attacks will come out slower and you defenses will be god awful if you run out. If you use the bar completely and try to attack, you lock up and lower your guard. I also love these types of games, so I'm always on the look out. I hope this sparked your interest as much as it did mine.
