So there we have it then! The Vitesse is motoring around and she looks fantastic doing so, I wish I could keep her but I need to fund that monstrous Capri build so one of you lucky people can take the Vitesse to the next step instead and give it that extra bit of love it needs to be a really special car.

Someone’s already said, but you need to sort that fuse out that’s got the fuse wire behind it. If you put a 30A fuse on top of a piece of 30A fuse wire, you now have the equivalent of a 60A fuse in that position, which is only slightly safer than putting a nail in it.

There is a coolant drain plug at the rear right side of the engine block at the bottom. These straight six engines like to collect a layer of silt there. It's a great place to flush the block from. Also the rad is supposed to have a cowling around it to direct the airflow. It really affects cooling above 40mph. Car looks great and I've put a punt on in the raffle 🤞

  • @scotty6346
    @scotty6346 5 днів тому +15

The first thing to do on a triumph straight six is fit a spin on oil filter conversion kit, The original oil filter assembly drains the oil back as it has no oil return valve. Every time you start it will take like 10 seconds for the oil light to extinguish as it has to prime the oil filter bowl thus putting more wear on the engine 👍 Having now watched the full video the gearbox is knackered, The Vitesse used an up graded Herald box but it was not up to the job.

My first car was a Triumph Vitesse WAR 153E plenty of power from those 6 cylinders. I do know that the rear welding underneath where the rear stabilisers meet the short chassis cross member was due to a weak point when putting your foot down causing the break. Happened to me twice and was like driving a crab when you put your foot down as the axle would move. Great classic little car 👍

It is a “great little car”. My father had a 1275 Herald estate and on occasion when it visited the garage he was lent a Vitesse as a courtesy car. As compared to the herald I remember the ability of the Vitesse to drive up steep hills in top gear all the while gaining in speed. That straight six had good pulling power.

What a beautiful day to take the Triumph Herald Vitesse out for the first time in 40 years.
It’s dripping in 1960s British charm.
My step mum had one in red, a convertible, with a cream top, iirc. I don’t know if it was a Vitesse or just a four cylinder Herald. I don’t remember ever being driven in it. Perhaps she hardly used it. She was an old fashioned, stay at home mum.
I was pretty young (b. 1960) & she’s not around to ask. My family didn’t do photo albums. My wife does, so our grandchildren will be able to look back to before they were born.

If I remember correctly, there is a little lever low down on the petrol tank, which allows you to switch to a lower lever of pickup to act as a reserve level of petrol. I wonder if this one has that feature ? Of course you had to remember to switch it back when you fill up , otherwise you are running on the low level all the time. It must have been designed in expecting that the fuel gauge would fail at some time.

If both temp and fuel gauge aren’t working it could be the instrument voltage regulator at fault. Also for clearing blocked cooling systems try sulphamic acid (NOT sulphuric acid which sounds similar but strangely isn’t) - it looks like sugar but don’t put it in your tea. Dissolves all calcium deposits and is the most effective coolant flush I’ve ever used.

I've really enjoyed these 2 videos -- brought back many happy memories of driving my 1964 Vitesse 1600 in the late 1960s. Great little car - very light controls, superb visibility and a really tight turning circle. Not so good was having to crawl under the car to replace the rear trunnion plastic bushes at regular intervals because they kept wearing out. Ah, happy days!

Bought a few tickets, less so to win the thing and more so just to buy you a pint mate. If I end up winning I'll have some headscratching to do on how to get it home, but I'll worry about that in the unlikely event that I win it 😂

Purchased a few tickets to the raffle, would be an amazing thing to win, i think i would drive it straight up to my grandad and hand him the keys, he would be smiling the rest of his life. Thanks for the chance and thanks for the content as always. Looking forward to the next one!

😂😂 if it wasn't a 30 hour drive in total I'd love to take it, I think I need to get a crazy tow car so I can take these things over there, maybe a new F350!

Okay, tickets bought, in a moment of madness. Not sure what to do if I win the thing, though I do have quite a stash of parts.
Quite fancy a trip to Wales, though. We have not paid a visit since the plague started. That would be an ideal excuse. I wonder could that noisy drivetrain be trusted to make it to Holyhead. I can leave the car and trailer in the port, on this side, for far cheaper than bringing them over with me.

2 years, over 50 cars and fast approaching 300 videos! It’s a crime you’ve not burst through 100k subscribers, my weekends would be a lot duller if it wasn’t for your graft and passion for old motors. Really hope the raffle raises a decent sum that you can ‘invest’ in the mad dog Capri project. Smashed it yet again Ben, we’ll done.

I love your channel and what you do on it m8....your laid back and optimistic approach is first rate. I do have to say though I cringe when you use a grinder with no eye protection....I've worked in engineering all my life and getting a spark in the eye isn't any fun, especially having to go to the eye infirmary where they will remove it with a needle!!😮😮😮....in the worst case you could get blinded in your eye. Even in the late 80s when I was an apprentice, grinding without eye protection would of gotten you the sack!!!...honestly m8 , you only get one pair of eyes.....apart from that , keep up the very very good work 😊😊😊

Ooh !, did I spot the ass end of a Granada Scorpio on your trailer ??, hope so !, haven’t seen one of them in YEARS.
Also, yes, fibreglassing looks easy but, it has a mind of its own. Great video Ben, love this old Vitesse, she’s a keeper.
