Apologies for the sounds quality at the start I need a better radio mic! It gets better when I take it off though. About time I got a Capri on the channel and looking forward to getting more done on it, parts have already started to arrive 😅
In 1987, my Dad took me out of primary school for 'a laugh', picked me up in a red Capri, took me to the petrol station, bought a packet of smarties and a king-size Mars (which I took), then took me to buy a Mountfield Lawnmower. It was such a cool day and how he got that massive new Mountfield into the boot I have no clue. He owned the Capri for about a week and that is my only memory of it. Good stuff!
Was distracted at work all afternoon waiting for 6pm!!! What a wonderful start to my Friday evening!!! I had quite a bit of experience with Capri's, back in the day, and they were always great fun! As always, thank you Ben for the excellent entertainment.
Your enthusiasm is contagious, Mate. Congratulations on your purchase. This car deserves another crack at life and I think you’re the person to grant it.
You obviously know nothing about cars...the Capri is just a prop to get views. A genuine enthusiastic wouldn't have butchered the battery terminals and started a dry engine...
What can I say, you can do as many Capri episodes as you like, I've had a mk2, an immaculate one owner 2.0s, a 2.8 injection,a 3.0 ghia and a highly modified 3.0s and loved them all,I could watch you all day long, just so enjoyable and entertaining, best wishes to you Ben.
Amazing addition! I can’t believe how solid it is underneath. Not much welding needed at all. The wear free Laser drivers seat is very rare. The interior has scrubbed up so well. I also have a black Capri Laser (video on my channel) so can’t wait to see the progress and restore you do on this. That engine is on the button and barely run in! I would suggest keeping as is for a good year maybe and put some miles on it and enjoy it. Maybe then engine swap, but don’t ‘bin it’ just stick it on a pallet and keep it to one side maybe, especially as you have all the mot history to back the mileage up etc. can’t wait for the follow up episodes on this!
Brilliant thank you, that was my idea if I did do anything to the car I'd make sure I'd keep the bits and keep the engine safe as it is a little gem and would be easily returned back to standard
My second car was a 1.6L Capri from 1978 that I got in the mid 80's, I spent many Sundays filling the wheel arches with that foam plastic stuff, sanding down and re painting - happy days!
They apparently named the capri the Mustang of the UK back in the day .I guess they were a similar shape Plus the Mustang was a bit smaller than equivalent American coupés so made a bit of sense . I owned a fair few Capri back in the 80,s . MK1 ,2 and 3 great cars
I found an old Henry hoover in a skip! Stripped it down and cleaned it all out. The engineering especially the cable reel in them is interesting. They were designed by the still owner of the company who made the first one with an oil drum. That's why the thread on the hose is that size it's a small oil drum cap size! They are designed to be worked on you can tell!
From an American perspective, it’s amazing that Ford was still making these in the UK as late as 1986. In the US, they went away (as the Mercury Capri) in 1979 and they are so representative of cars of the 1970s here. Realistically, though, Ford probably should have saved money and introduced these as the Mustang II instead of creating an entirely new car. If marketed correctly, they probably would have sold just as well.
Regardless of engine size , these cars are an absolute pleasure and treat to see on the UK roads. Very nice attractive body shape. No wonder today they are going and making a absolute fortune.
Lovely Low mileage Capri. Depends what you want to do with it. Fords tend to be worth more money if they are all standard. That engine only has 32000 miles on it. You could install a bigger engine in it. But I would keep the original engine as a backup. Just in case you wanted to sell it. So you could covert it back to standard. Keep up the great videos.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I stumbled across this video and loved it….all 2 hours. I’m restoring a 2.0s that I bought 4 years ago now. Was heavily customised with a V8 but I’m returning it to somewhat original with a pinto I’ve owned for 2 decades. I’m also doing an Australian mk2 Escort van that I imported last year and almost owned that now for a decade!!! Good luck with your project Capri.
Ben, I stumbled across your channel because your recent Focus ST video appeared in my suggestions. That video has resulted in you becoming one of my favourite channels on youtube. I'm now looking forward to catching up on this Capri rebuild. Keep up the hard work and continue making these amazing videos. You've got something about you that is different to other car related channels I watch and I think you've got great potential to go very very far in this game!
Halfway through this and it's awesome already. My stepdad had a mint W reg Navy blue 2.0.S back in mid 80s. Had the orange check fishnet ricaros in. Awesome car that was.
The small wire to the positive terminal is a fusible link, inside the sleeving further down the wire it connects to larger red cables and yes you can buy batteries with flat terminals, really enjoying this, i served my time as an auto electrician on Fords from our local Ford dealership in Horwich called Gordon Ford, this was in 1979, we did their electrical repairs, cheers Andy
Holy fuckin shit I'm layed up in bed and have completely binged all your vids absolutely amazing!!!!!! Pretty sure some off your gags/sarcasm will be missed by some but mate honestly thankyou and keep it up....bravo sir 👍🏻
The Capri is probably the most beautiful car Ford has ever made it looks like it's going 100 standing still and I'm glad you decided to keep it too! A Capri defo suits you brother
Lovely Capri! Always had a soft spot for these. My dad bought one in 1994 as a ‘get me out of the sh*t car’ as our MkV Cortina had been stolen from my nan’s house in Manchester. Needed a car to get us home 200 miles away and he bought HNB 420V. Despite 15 years of city abuse in Manchester, it drove home without a single issue and he kept it for another 2 years after that. Your Capri looks great, number plate tag for a garage in Denton, Manchester which is where my uncle lives. Nice work Ben!
Im a Brit living in KY, a dirt dauber is a kind of wasp that builds their nests from mud, had a 3l V6 capri back in the day, and it scarped the hell out of me on damp days 😀
WOW! that must be the most solid capri i have ever seen!! black is the best color on that car. thats a real keeper in my world. congrats mate! looking forward to more episodes 😀
That's Savage nothing better than a tasty classics video with pizza after work ❤ great to see a capri on the channel cool thing, I watch him to dirt dobbers are a type of wasp funny enough weird as shit
Hi love watching you, John in New Zealand. Have owned a few cars, about 27 last count. Capri is great got piped at the post for a 2litre which promptly promptly grenades on the poor bloke.
Gotta lova a ford Capri. My parents had 2 and wrote both of them off, the second time with me in the back in a carry cot. The first was a sleeper 1300l with a 2 litre engine and an enormous weber carb jammed under the bonnet and zero upgrades to wheels, tyres, brakes or suspension so no wonder it crashed. The second was a John Player Special limited edition and that's the one I was in the back of when it got written off on the way back from a holiday in the South of France.
My Dad used to like Capris when i was a child, Mk1 & Mk2 and a special edition MK3 Calypso in dark green . Really enjoying watching your channel. Better than wheeler dealers by a country mile.
Your best project yet, i have had loads of Capris, sold my last a few years ago which was a 1.6 laser in black, your seats are in amazing condition as normally the material splits. I bet the heater motor is knackered and thats why the lower dash was out , looks a good shell. hope you do well with it on utube.
@MarkB9th Not only have I heard of it I've driven one and it was far to front heavy. The brakes are barely adequate for the weight and the only way to get it to go round a corner was to power slide it, otherwise the front would just push and understeer The old Essex lump was initially intended to be produced in both diesel and petrol versions so it was a very heavy block, like over 300ibs so over double that of a Pinto..
that capri needs to be kept as a 1.6 laser - It's such a unicorn car in that condition and mileage, and is 100% original. Please don't change the engine, just make that car concours. You can easily find another one less special which can take an st170 lump or whatever - In perfect condition that capri could be pushing 8-10k? Will definitely fund another. You are well worth patreoning matey.
Hello from Canada! Nice score bud! I had two Capri's in my teen years (Long ago LOL) Both 1973 models and both manual V6 2.6L However one was massively modded with Race cam and pistons, high rise manifold four barrel carb hooker headers. (I think that was it) and it went as you might say "Like the Clappers!" Or as we would say "She's a Ripper!" It was painted Candy Apple Red with a huge Whale Tale on the rear too! It had a body kit on it and looked MEAN! But it kept on blowing out rear end's and when the struts on the front died and the clutch cable snapped for the the second time along with the diff blowing up again I just stopped and drove the stock one. It was great and I actually did a few amateur Rallies. What I wouldn't give to have those European Fords (They were sold under the Mercury name here actually) back NOW! Too bad yours is the tiniest engine available. HOWEVER! I would think it wouldn't be much difficulty finding a V6 maybe a 2.8 or 3.0L even to put into that baby. I haven't yet watched the whole video so I'm praying and hoping it runs like crap so you are motivated to swap that sucker out and make it a fantastic project car we could all watch for a bunch of series videos on it and maybe YOU could go RACING!!! WOW! THAT WOULD BE SOOOOO COOL!! PLEASE!! DO THIS!! If you've ever loved me at all (LOL I'm trying everything here) you'd genuinely see how important this is to me and ALL OF YOUR FAN BASE PLUS ALL of those thousands to come once they catch on that you're the first REAL CAPRI swapping Video EVER (Like I said I'm trying everything LOL) great personality and master mechanic to actually do a full Capri build on you tube! We've been hoping and praying then hugely disappointed each time we see a Capri vid that says "Full resto" or something like that and it's just a bunch of old blurry pictures of a boring ten year paid to get the work done somewhere thing. PLEASE Kind Handsome Brilliant Wise and Generous SIR!! Ooo, maybe even a 5.0L (302CI in our speak LOL!! All the best and think you again for all your great videos!! Sorry this is so long but I'm excited for once about something IMPORTANT!! LOL.
My dad always had Capris when I was growing up - we travelled all over Europe on our family holidays. The fastest I have ever been in a car was 120mph Capri 3.0 Ghia 😂
My first Capri was an 85 Laser 1.6. Great cars even if a bit old school. I promised myself I'd have another. They're so easy to work on. There was, iirc a 1.6L, GL, GT, S (rare) then in 85 it went to the 1.6 and 2.0 Laser. I upgraded mine to 2 litre after an engine catastrophe and it ran for another couple of years. The last ones were the Brooklands 280s which are seriously rare now. There's one in Hastings with just 1000 genuine miles on the clock
Love your video and your sense of humor. It is impressive that this Pinto just runs and the timingbelt is not snapping or anything. Imagine Ford making a engine like that in modern times aswell instead of wetbelt builds.
I had a 1.6 GL in red on a V plate i added that rubber spoiler, it was slow back in the day, when the engine blew on the motorway just outside of Notts, i had it re-bored to 1.8 but it didn't really help had that thing for almost 14 years, the petrol gauge stopped working the heater packed up the drivers door got replaced with a gold version and the windscreen wipers would fall off (on the motorway) front valance rotted don't ever take the rear number plate off. Loved it but it was massively underpowered, the death knell for it was when it ran out of petrol on the private road to what used to be British Coal HQ and i had to push it, the drivers door snapped and fell off I was handed a post-it note, from someone in the management it simply read, "buy a new car"
A friend of the family had a 1987 2.8 special owned it for many many years and then sat in his garden of the road for years I helped him get it running and we were blasting it up and down the road no seatbelts on no MOT nothing how they never noticed is beyond me but always been my dream ford to own can't wait for many more episodes on this 👍
Overall a very sound purchase 👍🏻 Camshaft is noisy if you’re lucky then adjusting the tappets may fix the problem, failing that it will need a camshaft kit . Common problem back in the day was the camshaft oil feed bar would clog up and starve the cam of oil…another job to check 👍🏻 …and get that cam belt changed..due to age it could snap anytime ☹️ From memory 1.6 pinto engine safe if belt snaps …..2.0 pinto not 👍🏻
Ben before you dismiss the clutch try adjusting the clutch cable , the proper way to adjust cable is to back the large nut off till the pedal is level with the brake pedal rubber that is the way i was taught, when i was a prentices at ford and that includes allfords that have clutch cables . Great vewing. Ben . If the gear selecting gets difficult then you are probably right the clutch is shot. My favourite capri was the mark one 3oooe now that was a beast especially in the wet cheers ,👍Alan .
I used to walk past a D reg blue/purple ISH one 2.0l Lazer when I was at school in the 80's. I've had my classic car sat outside since 2003 I completely re-did it in 2003. But the paints peeled lots of parts have gone rusty. It's tempting to try and get it finished again I just need a new tailgate. Got a bonnet and scuttle panel. Then the chassis legs need welding and from pillars.
G'afternoon Ben 🤠 . Nice score & great job my friend. Here in the States' Ford has the mud stain & mercury has the capri 🤣 . Some guys turbo them but my friends & I put 302 & 351 smallblock's with camshafts and headers in them. If it's a standard we put a four-speed stick in them and if it's an automagical we use a C6 w/ a shift kit, then we relocate the rear shocks so we can run wider tires out back or we 4 link the rear end. They make for fun little road & track cars 😋 ..
Long term wise, I'd put the 170 engine in it on throttle bodies, the LSD, rear coil spring conversion (you can get a kit for an Escort which needs slight modification to work), lower the old girl a bit, nice exhaust, couple of 80s recaros in the front, nice period steering wheel, and give it a lick of paint after sorting the tinworm out, get some reproduction decals done, and you're off to the races!
I caught myself, saying out loud "Oh, Yes Ben. Well done". Nice motor. Those old Fords had batteries with flat terminal posts. I nearly got caught out on my old Cortina Mk4, with Pinto engine. The battery had two earth wires. One to the engine and one to the bodywork. After a top end overhaul, I put the battery back in and inadvertently sat the battery on the chassis earth and missed it. The car ran fine, but had all sorts of gremlins. Lights flickering and temp guage showing overheating once up to temp. But strangely it returned to normal when I put the handbrake on. I eventually found that it was getting all it's chassis earths through the handbrake cable, throttle and choke. Found my mistake when I took the battery back out. Doh! Happy days.
THIS is a keeper. No engine-swap. Make him brand-new. Engine-swaps are - you know, which kind of people do these. Let it be. This car deserves to stay original. In 1996 I was able to work as a student trainee at the Ford factory in Cologne for six weeks - three weeks of which were on the assembly line and three weeks in another department. There I took the liberty of sitting in a pair of Ford Capri-Cosworth touring cars. How I loved these vehicles in the 70s! In my neighborhood, there was a black 2.8 in the neighborhood - unfortunately it was badly rusted. It's a great pleasure to see a well-preserved model again!
This is one of your most compelling videos, ever. I enjoyed every minute of it and thanks so much for your hard work. I can't wait for the next in this series. Ten out ten, Mr TC.
Watching you mess with this took me back to the early 90s my nannas drive way I had 3 mad uncles who had Orion’s capri’s cortina’s every weekend they would be doing something absolutely brilliant watching u fix this up 🎉
Points gap is 17 thou. Timing 12 degrees before tdc vac pipe off distributor and valve clearances 8 inlet 10 exhaust and check and see if oil feed pipe on camshaft isn't blocked.
Another great video Ben. I remember these back in the day, my uncle had a bronze mk1 with black vinyl roof but it was tragically rusty, especially where the roof fitter had used a stanley knife to trim the vinyl - your car looks much better! At one point the father and son next door both had black 3 litre (?) S(?) cars with the gold pinstripes. Helped kindle my interest in cars as a teenager
Hey my friend across the pond! The Ford Capri always reminds me of the Mustang II that we had from 1974-1978! I’m not talking down about the Capri, I love it and, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, I actually like the Mustang II!!!!!
Great project! Brings back fond memories of my folks brown Capri when I was a youth in the 80's. It took us everywhere but it couldn't do steep hills and we rolled back down one once. I still felt cool as riding in the back of that. I've never driven one though.... gutted!
My HR and I have had lots of ford Capri's the pinto engine is an easy one to fix a tip for all the oil feeder pipe on top of the cam blocks up easy, the fix is easy drill the oil feed holes out the next size up, no more problems
I used to spray the carpet sections on the parcel shelf with satin black car paint worked a treat also in the recess along the underside a strip of wood along the width would straighten it up no end or aluminium strip whatever you can get, it looks great after.
i can remember my mother coming back home saying she just bought a car and can i pick it up . was from a car dealer in Dembigh north wales , a 2.0 GL pinto capri in midnight blue ... was in the familly for over 25 years i loved it always a head turner ours was a V reg , watching this viedo makes me miss it .. whatever you dicide to do with it i hope it goes well , enjoy your videos . Steve
great watching your vid inspired me to go out and get my mk1 capri started today it hasnt run for 3 to 4 yrs turned over with a charged battery put some fuel down carb it started for few seconds ,then got locking petrol cap off with the help of wd40 poured in a load of new fuel and it ran idelled topped up water it ran perfect pintos rule its a facelift mk1 with the pinto got body work to do and sized back brakes i did a massive restoration on it 12 yrs ago so it was soild everywhere then and used loads wax oil .I laid it up after personal life went into a nose dive in 2020 thanks for helping with the kick to get it started and hopefully back on the road soon .love the channel
Apologies for the sounds quality at the start I need a better radio mic! It gets better when I take it off though. About time I got a Capri on the channel and looking forward to getting more done on it, parts have already started to arrive 😅
What mics are you using, the DJI ones are good
Yes to DJI but Rode wireless ones are even better
@@markahobbs1967 I use Rode with my GoPro, so yes makes sense 😂😂 I thought he was using a phone until I saw the go pro
It's not even bad at all.
It sounds okay ....just a bit peaky at times, either lower the gain by 20% or place it further away from your foghorn
In 1987, my Dad took me out of primary school for 'a laugh', picked me up in a red Capri, took me to the petrol station, bought a packet of smarties and a king-size Mars (which I took), then took me to buy a Mountfield Lawnmower. My first choice is an estate car, but it's amazing how much can go in a hatchback car, with the rear seats folded, they are both useful "kit".
It might be worth checking the cam spray bar.
Your dad stole it and used you for cover.
Blessed🙏🏼😂
@@karluk7724 Very possibly!
Your enthusiasm is terrific!!
I was on the edge of my seat when you trying to start her up. Fantastic!!.
Congratulations Ben. 👍🤘😁
Thanks for helping me survive our lasses obsession with soap operas with brilliance, pure engineering and a passion for something real.. Cheers.
Ditto 😂😂
This is a classic !!! Reminds of the professionals !!! This needs a full resto !
What more can you ask for? New video, new car..few beers and sat in the sun…☀️ perfect Friday evening 👍🏻😊
This Capri deserves a full respray and keeping original .....👍
The next guy will do that
In green like the spitfire
With x pack arches 😎@@marklittler784
If it gets an engine swap, no issue with keeping original engine and bits with it when it's moved on.
Don't be such a cardigan, it needs a Windsor in it is what it needs . Lol
This has made me smile. I sort of took Capris for granted in the 80s because they were everywhere, but I'd love one now.
Was distracted at work all afternoon waiting for 6pm!!! What a wonderful start to my Friday evening!!! I had quite a bit of experience with Capri's, back in the day, and they were always great fun! As always, thank you Ben for the excellent entertainment.

Gotta love a capri. That shape, the aggressive look. The headlights. It wouldn't look out of place in America next to a dodge charger.

St170 engine on twin carbs is what you need, leave everything else standard including the laser stickers. Like an old skool sleeper 👍
I found an old Henry hoover in a skip!

It was like finding gold!
My Dad used to like Capris when i was a child, Mk1 & Mk2 and a special edition MK3 Calypso in dark green . Really enjoying watching your channel. Better than wheeler dealers by a country mile.
That ford is the same age as me
Your best project yet, i have had loads of Capris, sold my last a few years ago which was a 1.6 laser in black, your seats are in amazing condition as normally the material splits. I bet the heater motor is knackered and thats why the lower dash was out , looks a good shell. hope you do well with it on utube.
This Capri deserves better than a Pinto under its hood ! A 3 liter Essex will be perfect in this place !
Except a big heavy lump like an Essex would really spoil the handling.
@MarkB9th Not only have I heard of it I've driven one and it was far to front heavy. The brakes are barely adequate for the weight and the only way to get it to go round a corner was to power slide it, otherwise the front would just push and understeer
The old Essex lump was initially intended to be produced in both diesel and petrol versions so it was a very heavy block, like over 300ibs so over double that of a Pinto..
that capri needs to be kept as a 1.6 laser - It's such a unicorn car in that condition and mileage, and is 100% original. Please don't change the engine, just make that car concours. You can easily find another one less special which can take an st170 lump or whatever - In perfect condition that capri could be pushing 8-10k? Will definitely fund another. You are well worth patreoning matey.
Why have I not subscribed until now!!!!! Love your content. Capri’s are legendary. The new one however!!! What on earth is Ford playing at!!!
Committing corporate suicide, following orders from WEF 😮
I am not kidding.
Best 2 hours I've watched on UA-cam . Never been a big Capri fan...until now
Hello from Canada!
As a previous owner of several capris in my youth I approve of this video ;) Cannot wait to see this gem in future videos
The Capri was my favourite car when I was a kid back in the early 80s. I would love to have one now, they are beautiful looking cars.
Sunday morning, coffee, wife doing wife things. I'm left alone in the peace and quiet watching this beauty. Lovely!
Capris and cortina's are all I used to drive around in years ago, I absolutely loved them 👍🏼
Love your video and your sense of humor.
A friend of the family had a 1987 2.8 special owned it for many many years and then sat in his garden of the road for years I helped him get it running and we were blasting it up and down the road no seatbelts on no MOT nothing how they never noticed is beyond me but always been my dream ford to own can't wait for many more episodes on this 👍
Overall a very sound purchase 👍🏻
Camshaft is noisy if you’re lucky then adjusting the tappets may fix the problem, failing that it will need a camshaft kit .
Common problem back in the day was the camshaft oil feed bar would clog up and starve the cam of oil…another job to check 👍🏻
…and get that cam belt changed..due to age it could snap anytime ☹️
From memory 1.6 pinto engine safe if belt snaps …..2.0 pinto not 👍🏻
Absolutely brilliant episode, one of the best yet, loved every minute of this.
Happy for you, looks like a nice solid enough project
This has brought back my childhood memories of the whole family owning capris ❤
Watching you mess with this took me back to the early 90s my nannas drive way I had 3 mad uncles who had Orion’s capri’s cortina’s every weekend they would be doing something absolutely brilliant watching u fix this up 🎉
Same always felt like the bonnet was 3 miles infont when driving them but still good cars better time's
Great to see a Capri getting some love. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing.
Points gap is 17 thou. Timing 12 degrees before tdc vac pipe off distributor and valve clearances 8 inlet 10 exhaust and check and see if oil feed pipe on camshaft isn't blocked.
Can’t wait to sit down and enjoy this - keep up the good work Ben
I always loved the Capri especially the last series. Old Fords never die however it needs a lot of (body)work.
That trunk looks fantastic! That just made the rest of the rust completely doable!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Great video, Dad had a 2L S capri new in 1979 which I grew up with so I have fond memories of them. Would be good to see this one back on the road. 👍
Hey my friend across the pond! The Ford Capri always reminds me of the Mustang II that we had from 1974-1978! I’m not talking down about the Capri, I love it and, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, I actually like the Mustang II!!!!!
What a fantastic car well done for all your hard work
Great project!
Steve
I've had my 2.8i Capri for 30 years so I'm going to enjoy this. 👍
Brilliant Ben, purchased one new back in day , blue lazer 16 .. went everywhere in it as a young guy ... nice to see one again 😀
great watching your vid inspired me to go out and get my mk1 capri started today it hasnt run for 3 to 4 yrs turned over with a charged battery put some fuel down carb it started for few seconds ,then got locking petrol cap off with the help of wd40 poured in a load of new fuel and it ran idelled topped up water it ran perfect pintos rule its a facelift mk1 with the pinto got body work to do and sized back brakes i did a massive restoration on it 12 yrs ago so it was soild everywhere then and used loads wax oil .I laid it up after personal life went into a nose dive in 2020 thanks for helping with the kick to get it started and hopefully back on the road soon .love the channel
