I'm 90% sure it's a sandbar shark, but the dorsal fin is usually much larger. Those tiny ventral fins help in reproduction, but are mostly used for fine motor control. They help the shark turn and roll as well as help in going up and down in the water. I've worked with live Sandbar sharks for a couple years now at the USA's National Aquarium in Baltimore and they're quite personable. One of our Sandbars is nicknamed "creeper" because she likes to sneak up towards visitors, showing her teeth and scaring the daylights out of them. Fun fact about sandbars: They use obligate ram ventilation to breath, and must keep swimming to keep oxygenated water flowing through their gills to survive. edit: The reason shark skin damages knives quickly and is so painful to hold onto with bare hands is because of the dermal denticles on their skin. they're literally teeth. on the shark's skin. They have different shapes depending on the species, but the ones on Sandbars aren't too bad. other species dermal denticles would have cut your hand up if handled the same way. edit 2: so it is indeed a Sandbar. It's a little sad to see my fish friends this way, but I'm glad that the fish is being prepared respectfully, and without waste.
This shark looks to be a grey reef shark. I was confused and until I saw the shark's eye. Reef sharks have distinct eyes that helps me identify them. Maybe this isn't helpful now that it has been eaten, but surprised people couldn't identify this shark. Shark fanatic and wanted to be a marine biologist, hope this helps. Each Shark has their own unique eyes that at the minimum should be enough to at least give great guesses.
