First Impression: Bought the Original BMPCC 6K a few days before the Pocket 6K PRO

- I finally decided to buy the Pocket 6K last week, give it a test run, and share my first impressions & footage, being mostly a Canon shooter. Then a few days later...the Pocket 6K PRO arrives haha! It's not within my price range, but I'm glad to see the steps Blackmagic is taking to improve these affordable Mini Cine-Cams.

@@LouisLuzuka Ah right, if you need verical video then yes the m50 ii does support that. It's just got a crop in 4k, whereas the M6II removes that and keeps 1.6x. M50ii also has no DPAF in 4K, m6ii Does, but you know your needs better than I do. I just got the M6II last week and think it's one of the best YT cams I've ever owned. It's not as detailed in 4K as the others like Panasonic S5, but the colours are mint straight out of the camera, and AF is very good!

I made the same decision, couldn't justify the extra cost of the Pro. Had the original 6K for about a week now and no regrets.

Thanks Zeek, great video as usual, I bought the Original BMPCC 6K (got the Davinci Resolve License with it) on a special offer a few years ago, I must say I hardly ever use it because of the large size, I still love my EOS M, always a challenge to see how well the EOS M performs and it never fails to deliver, love it : )
EOS M never fails haha so true! I export H.264 from DaVinci and those BRAW files come out tiny! Love both cams honestly, but still going to use the M for sure!
Always impress by your use of the eos m, nothing to envie !! Even in compare of bmpcc 6k, it's just insane...

Oooh haha! I showed him the footage later without telling which was which, he was surprised for sure but he guessed the outdoor ones right thanks to the resolution. I copied the same editing settings from the P6K in Davinci and pasted it on the EOS M DNG Raw, then made minor tweaks. Colours look exact lol. 😎🎥🔥

I've got the BMPCC4K (with Viltrox Speedbooster). But TBH, I only use it when I want to punch in the 4K or have the BRAW to grade. I use the EOS M/ML more, simply because I'm more fearless with it. (Again, price). I may start using the BMPCC4K in place of my C100/Atomos Ninja 2 combo tho in the near future. Finally got the hang of the color checker in Davinci Resolve (which is my NLE).
I blame Zeek that I use EOS M/ML more than any other camera. And I can't thank him enough for it; because there's stuff that I would never try (and therefore would never learn) otherwise. No way I'd have felt comfortable bringing the BMP to some of the places where I bring EOS M/ML without fear.

Thanks to your videos and experience, I decided to keep my canon 100d and magic lantern and my sony a6400 because with magic lantern they do wonders if not almost the same as with the blackmagic pocket cinema hehe I almost sell them less badly reconsider

Appreciate the comparison of the two cameras: on my iPad Pro screen there is noticeable difference between the BM and the M, but the M blew me away. The difference isn’t as great as I expected. Will you compare the BM with 5d as well? This isn’t a request, just curious.

I recently got an EOS M after watching a ton of your videos and I‘m getting some great footage thanks to all your tips on settings, lenses and all the details! I stumbled onto your channel through your BMPCC4K video though, because I‘m slowly building up to getting one of those. I was wondering, do you have similar footage from the Pocket 4K that I could possibly use to test my Hackintosh? I‘m currently working on a video about my Hackintosh build and would like to push it to its limits and your nature shots are always so beautiful! Would be great for showing how well BMPCC4K footage runs vs the BMPCC6K footage you posted here vs some of my own EOS M footage. I would of course credit you and link to your channel!
Thanks again for everything you do here, you‘ve put together a really great resource that makes filmmaking a lot more affordable. I originally planned to just save up to get the BMPCC4K for a documentary project, but with the price of the EOS M I can start already and the two cameras seem to compliment each other really nicely!

A lot to be honest ;) You don't always need the latest camera, just get whatever will tick your criteria :) After owning a lot of cams, it's what I've also learned.

Colour science is very similar. Love that about Blackmagic! Really, crossmatch is great actually in Davinci Resolve.

For whatever reason I've never tried editing braw footage until now, thanks for the download link btw. I thought it would flow better then it did, the image didn't grade the way I wanted it to and the raw exposure controls felt clunky. I much prefer cdng, even arri log c feels more raw then this braw. The file size is massive with lack luster results. Glad I stayed away from the hype. I'll take properly exposed prores log over braw any day.
Now problem at all. Glad you had a quick taste before the plunge! I use am external 4TB HDD for $120, then export the clips individualy from DaVinci Resolve as H.264. The file sizes are then absolutely tiny around from 3GB to 80-100MB. But yes, I know a few who prefer CDNG, I do as well, but I'm still pleased with BRAW.
Bud, take a look at my pocket 4k compact rig to see how to solve your battery issue, it's pretty great and easy to mount.

The lowlight and dynamic range on the Pocket is amazing for the price. How do you think the 12 bit BRAW holds up against the 14bit DNG tho in terms of color retention and all that jazz.
Exactly! It holds up really well. I can say that ML Colours really pop. I can match Blackmagic to it it pretty well, but there is a noticeable extra bit of colour depth with ML. The resolution on the P6K can't be beaten though.
haha duuude im in the exact same boat! BUT I am still keeping the 6k. It has less mechanical features (the tilting screen and ND filters) which can potentially malfunction!

If you're a Canon User, I think you'll be at home with this one! Just assess your needs first and consider what you'll use it for and how often. With the pocket 6K Pro, you can't tilt the screen all the way up, with the original you can if you get a Tilta Mod.
But the BM Color Science feels about the same as Canon just with a more cinematic time right off the bat.
My editing workflow is DaVinci Resolve, edit all the clips there In a 4K/6K Timeline, export individual clips as H.264, then order them in FCPX and add music etc. Not much else is done in FCPX and then export 4K H.264.
I don't miss the AF as I already use and love my other Canon Cams with Dual Pixel AF. I like the mix of BM and Canon.
Please make tut how to solve battery problem with powerbanks, v battery or other way.

So Zeek, I gotta ask.... That BRAW vs MLV footage... did you grade that with your eyes? I just shot my pastor's weekly message, and it was dark, so I brought BMPCC4K for the dynamic range; but I brought the color card because I didn't think I could match the footage any other way. Do you have some trick to matching footage between BRAW and MLV? Your color correction is spot on.
Yes I graded it with my eye 😉.
I exported the EOS M Clips as DNG from MLV App. Placed them into the same timeline as the BMPCC 6K Clips. I then edited the Pocket 6K Clips with exposure, saturation, hue, white balance etc..and then applied the exact same settings to the M DNG Clips and then further adjust things to match the Pocket 6K.
The Pocket 4K is M43 Sensor, so it will look a bit more flat in comparison to Aps-c sensor. But pretty much just copying what I do from the pocket and then pasting them onto the M Clips.
White balance and Aperture where exactly the same too on both cameras.
I see you have the nikkor non ais lens on the bmpc6k, don't know if that's the 50 but I have the 50 and 35. Are you getting anything good out of the lens? I want to invest in the whole line from that year but I just don't like the images I'm getting and might switch to canon fd's when the world forgets about them again.

It's a nice lens. You need the H.C version which has better micro contrast than the non H.C. I also have the Ai Version which is slightly better too.
I do like Canon FD, though to mount on EF Cameras, it's a challenge without modification.
If it makes you feel any better, I got my 6K 2 weeks ago... A bit irritated for a new version to come out so soon, but I already have NDs, external monitor etc....

I probably won't ever jump to the pro though. I'm personally not a fan of the A6300-like screen tilt. I like the Tilta Mod better for the original 6K. 😎👍

Hi Zeek. Could you upload a couple of comparison files shooting 16:9 anamorphic frtp comparing the 6k bmpcc?
Also compare by seeking a few cinematic scenes not focusing entirely on detail.
First comparison should be done comparing against anamorphic, not against mv1080p imo.

@@dudek53 It has a clean image for sure, looks like a 6K EOS M. But still, there's something Magic about the EOS M. I still use it for stills, love the colour science and RAW Output, one of my favourite photo cams.
i have to say the color science is as good as canon (EOS M) .. great stuff. both cameras!
Feels like a 6K EOS M. The EOS M can use Speedboosters though. But yeah, amazing how Blackmagic have a similar look to Canon, at least closer than Sony.

Export as DNG, it's the easiest way for MLV Raw quick workflow. Everything in this video is basic and simple, very easy. Exporting from MLV App can take much time depending how long the clips are. 😉👍
with magic lantern a little knowledge and practice will do wonders like the ones you do MacGyver of the magic lantern

As for the BMPCC 6K, it really is a remarkeable camera.
Serves you right, because just 11 months ago you had the bmpcc 4k, which is largely the same camera as the 6k. So why buy the 6k? The 6k Pro adds much needed things that make the need for rigging smaller, you should have waited.
I like the Super 35 Look without the need for a speedbooster. The Ursa started getting combersome. I didn't like the form factor initially on these pocket cams and wanted something more like Z-Cam Style, but time changes everything. The P6K or PRO are both great cameras, the latter obviously has some cool features and upgrades. It depends whether you really need them or could live without them as well as the budget.
@@ZeekEOSZ Heh. Z-Cam. So, I have a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. The Super 16mm gives a really neat classic kind of look; and I got it on EBay for cheap. You should try it. DNG and ProRes HQ. Only reason I don't use it more is because it's hard to find the right lens to punch in on that Super 16 sensor. It's small and quite fun, if you can get the frame you want. If you find one for cheap cheap, I'd try it if I were you. (Unlike the BMMCC 4K, it can record internally. I feel like the 4K is meant for SDI only and HDMI is just the afterthought).

@@Dionne_Sheree Hi there. I use an inexpensive 35mm f1.7 by Voking that I got on Amazon for a cheap $65.99 USD. I get some depth of field from it, and the build quality for the money straight-up astounded me. The hard thing about Super 16mm how how much it crops in, and I have to back up the tripod no matter what I do; but it gives a really cool look.

Not really, it's quite a steady one and I'm used to it. We own it. But yeah, at times it could get risky. I had a neck strap on at all times.

Yep, not the best. But the Blackmagic Battery grip with Sony Battery input will make it last a long time as well as the other solutions. The Pocket 6K Pro fixes this as well with the new FP Battery Input instead of the Original Canon LP-E6 🙃

Nope, I've used this for more than a year. I just hide it out of frame. Second time showing it in frame on YT. Sometimes I use a Lavalier, but this is my go-to mic.

If you bought it last week, simply return it and save the 500 for the pro.
Here in AU at the time it was a $1000 upgrade when it first got released from Blackmagic. Now it's about a $700 upgrade. I don't need those extra features at the moment, but it sure is nice. 👌

Honestly for the price of this thing, I can't complain. Get some good lenses, lighting, practice exposing and grading and you'll get great results, honestly. Enjoy! 😉👉🎥🔥

From MLV App, export DNG Uncompressed, it's the quickest workflow in my opinion. Then from DaVinci/Adobe, export as H.264. 😉👍

Not better, for the price definitely! A steal! For me I love the EOS M, it's crazy how well it can hold up! But the P6K detail is up there. In 2.8K Modes, it's hard to tell the difference between the two.
