Okay, I’m stumped! Awhile back I removed rather new alternator at a junk yard from the first generation Scion xB. I reached all the bolts from the top with not much of a problem. 👽
Did you notice whether the bracket directly opposite the bottom bolt was still on? Removing that bracket (which supports a harness that can also be moved) should provide clearance to remove the lower bolt.
This video was the only one that worked. I’m not sure about other people’s cars, but there is no way that bolt was coming off without raising the motor a little.
Great video but I've never had to raise the motor to do this. After removing top bolts and the bracket, and the belt, remove that bottom 14mm bolt out as far as it goes. By doing this, the bolt is only going through the left side of the alternator hole mount leaving the right side hole unobstructed, if that makes sense. You can then wiggle the alternator and twist it a bit, trying to angle the left side of the alternator up slightly, the right side should drop very slightly since theres no bolt in there now, and that allows the bottom bolt to clear the frame and airbag sensor bracket. Ive never had an issue doing it 3 separate times. And yes that hose is a pain.
So glad I found your video! Lately I've been seen the battery light come on very dimly, more visible when it's dark at night. I believe that means that my alternator will fail soon on my xB. I was not looking forward to remove the bumper and grill to have access for the alternator removal. Your video shows a much easier solution. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Just did this yesterday on my 05 xB. Doing the motor mount trick worked so much easier than removing the bumper. This is the 3rd alternator in this xB since I've owned it.
great video, funny but I did not need to raise the engine and I used a ratcheting wrench to remove the main bolt after I loosened with a ratchet and socket. I dont remember if you said to remove positive battery terminal first so you dont short the cable on the engine.
Just a tip to anybody doing this job a ratcheting wrench will come in clutch for that lower 14 mm bolt you might still have to raise the engine up a little bit
Thank you! I watched other videos on replacing the alternator, and they glossed over getting that bottom bolt out. That was the part I had the most trouble with. I spent an hour trying to get it, then watched this video, and everything became easy. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this video it absolutely helped me. The bolts for the engine mounts were seized/ I wasn’t strong enough to break them free so I couldn’t lift the engine but luckily was able to remove a bracket and had just enough room to pull that bottom bolt out. But again thank you so much!!!
Missed the amount of belt tension that needed to be set at as these belts can go to 90ft lbs and normal range is 45 to 60 ft lbs and the Toyota/Scion XB 1.5L spec is very hard to find!!!!!!
Thank u for this video u explain step by step how to change the alternator and raising the motor that is a plus to remove the screw keep making videos thank u.
I pretty much left it in the same position, start watching video at about 6:30 in and if you notice in the video, I zip tie it to keep it tight against all the other pulleys so all I have to do is put it back on the alternator pulley. If the belt comes off the other pulleys, before you lower the engine back down, you should have enough room to reach in and realign the belt on the other pulleys. Thanks and good luck.
You have to remove the 3 bolts that I show in video. The mount will still be attached to the motor and not the fender. If you only loosen, then you will not be able to raise the motor.
Thanks for the video I did not have to lift the motor I have my little girl put the Is socket on the screw and I'll loosen it up is ticket all by hand sideways sideways an it work took me longer to pull it up
Took the bracket off in front of the bolt. It was held on by one bolt and It came right out with out lifting the engine. Also didn't have to take off the bumper. not sure why everyone is making this so hard. Oh well :)
@@hguawcire got her out took off that bracket that is the air bag sensor the bolt almost clears it I'm thinking about Shaving 1/4 out where the bolt hits it then I would ever have to remove it those two little bolts for the bracket were the hardest part of the whole thing
Would your vehicles tire jack with a piece of 2x4 wood on top possibly work? You also may be able to rent a floor jack.....Just make sure to use your parking brake and chock the tires so your vehicle is secure and can't roll. Good luck!
I just got that bottom bolt out without raising the engine by taking that bracket off.
Good job!

Removing the washer fluid container with the bumper off gives you so much more space to work
Thanks! That was very helpful!
Tysvm! It helped immensely!
i replace my alternator with out taking anything out like it shows on the video
You didn't have to remove the motor mount? I just changed the alternator in my TC and was a tough job but it looks like a have more to work with.
I did both the alternator and the water pump without moving anything....pro level
Me too. Just replace the alternator and was able to get the bottom bolt out with a ratcheting wrench.
👍💯
Thanks!
Just buy the Toyota OEM alternator.
Video is about removal and installation of alternator but factory parts are always good to use.
From where??
This video I better than the other ones was very in depth thank you saved me from smashing my windows out lol
Thanks! Glad it helped!
Keep making video you've explained it the best out of most of these videos 💯%👏
Thanks! Glad it helped and please give it a thumbs up!
You actually show the 2nd altenator bolt, where it is. Nobody has that.
Thanks for the comment!
Fantastic video. Just did mine and your step by step was spot on thank you as it would have been a real pain in the a$$
Anyone knows how long that bottom bolt is? The scion I got the person used a shorter bolt and I wanna install the correct hardware

I just pulled alternator nice and tight leaving about 1/2” overall play in belt.
Very informative video and in depth in details, thank you for taking the time to make!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment!

hey Dave was wondering if you could explain where and how you raised the engine with the jack? Stuck on that bolt part. Please and thank you
I put a piece of wood on the jack and placed it directly under the oil pan. The wood protects the oil pan from getting damaged. Hope this helps!
Awesome video saved me a headache!!
Thanks! Wish I had this video before I started this project! would have saved me a ton of time!
This was invaluable help for me! Thank you so much!!!
Does the motor Mount come off when you unloose the bolts. When I raise it it raise the whole car not the motor alone???
You have to remove the 3 bolts that I show in video. The mount will still be attached to the motor and not the fender. If you only loosen, then you will not be able to raise the motor.
Hey. Thanks so much for making this video. I never would have thought to loosen the mounting bracket and raise the motor. Alot of help. Thank you
Your welcome! I originally figured out this procedure when replacing the water pump. Had to raise engine to do that also!
You nailed it. You should be an instructor!!! Thanks for your time!!!

Thx Bro ,,, that was a good demo ,, never thought to raise the engine ... appreciated , I’ll go do mine now ..thanks !
Great! Hope you got yours fixed!
Lower the engine
Excelent video ,I’m subscribed,thanks 👍
Hope it helped! Thanks
Th Alternator just froze up; love the tips! Thanks
Glad it helped! Hope repair was easier...
This is sage knowledge. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks. Glad you liked it!
What about the engine mounts on the other side?
The only motor mount that needs to be unbolted to do this job is the one on the passenger side as shown in the video. Thanks.
That is called a fixed nut.
Thanks
ok but what if I dont have the cramp to raise the motor
crap*

Was the bottom bolt difficult to loosen??
Not hard to loosen, just difficult to reach until I raised the motor.
@@davelowe1963 I tried to loosen
mine it wouldn’t move now it’s stripped smh lol
That’s crazy. I can understand stripping from over tightening but not from loosening. Don’t know the answer for you. Good luck.
@@davelowe1963 yeah it makes no since to me lol but thank you anyway
@@davelowe1963 hey man what part under the motor did you place the floor jack? I have to change mine and your method seems to be the smartest way.
Good job thanks!! I got lucky with that bottom bolt somebody replaced it with one that was short enough where I didn't have to lift the engine
Thank you! Hope video helped! Lucky you that the bolt came out without raising the motor! Buy a lotto ticket!
