One idea I had to introduce her into the lore is to have it so her father owned a Dojo in NYC, but the Foot Clan destroyed it, to eliminate competition, killing her father in the process. Aska should be included in the ninja turtles canon, NECA should make Aska figures and Funko should make Aska figures. That Aska also be included in the ninja turtles comics and that Aska appear in the new ninja turtles games

Shredder: "I don't even know who you are." Yes, it's a Thanos quote, but the context would be different here. It's because Shredder's desire for power and control over NYC is so great, that he and the Foot Clan can't even keep track of all the people's lives they ruin
Interestingly, Aska shares some traits with Rachael from Martial Champion which was another one on one fighting game Konami made in 1993 for the arcades and the PC Engine CD. Like Aska, Rachael was a kunoichi (female ninja) and had a similar outfit, albeit with a black leotard and blue kimono top. And if you notice how similar the player select in TMNT: TF looks to the player select in Martial Champion, it is possible that at one point, Konami wanted to port Martial Champion to the SNES.
Already stated in the video but if her name matched in beta, it likely means they intended to add her to the game but didn't because the movie failed. Perhaps they did some base sprite work for a female fighter and didn't want to abandon that so they modified the sprites into a generic hot girl fighter (which would be popular in a superficial way) and continued from there.

It's entirely possible that Aska was indeed supposed to be Mitsu (her original name, long hair and bandana are the biggest indicators) but Konami didn't think her design was very interesting for a fighting game and thus they redesigned her to make her look like a traditional fighting game kunoichi like Mai Shiranui. It's not like this is the first time they did something like that, I mean, April in the Genesis version doesn't look like April at all and more like a Blaze Fielding cosplayer.
The Genesis version has April O'Neill as a playable character and I think she looks more similar to Mitsu than Aska does. So I wonder if Mitsu was originally planned for the Genesis version and maybe they changed her to a completely new character for the SNES version.

What would her reaction be to the mutants/aliens running around? How does she feel about vigilantes or even characters that rely on technology/machines to do their fighting? Seems like a lot of narrative potential with her character… 🤔
Her name is Aska Mitsu. It isn't uncommon for ninjas to have a name that ends with Mitsu. The most famous being Yoshimitsu and Kunimitsu from Tekken. Likewise, the full name of the girl in the 3rd Ninja Turtles movie is Himemitsu.
Or maybe the people behind the game didn't know Mitsu was going to be a character from the past. Also considering this game came after "Turtles in Time" maybe allows for such a character to appear?

The english translation of her, I mean the spelling is missing a letter. All my years living in Japan I've never heard Aska. You can't even get that name in japanese this is no single s sound.
It's just an alternate English spelling of "Asuka". The singing duo Chage & Aska spells it like this. In this case, "Aska" is the English spelling of 飛鳥（あすか）.
What I am saying is that we do not know the full story. Maybe it was originally an original character, who was temporarily changed into Mitsu, and then they went back to an original character (thus explaining why the character looks so different).

I do think it was meant to be Mitsu, but I cannot confirm that myself. Because I didn't develop the game. Know what I mean? It's like getting into a room and finding a dead body on the floor, and a person standing next to it... sure, that person is a main suspect... but you have to figure out if the person was a killer or not. Do you have more information that I don't have about that beta? Was the Mitsu reveal confirmed by the company behind it?

At least Karai's moveset and fighting poses in Shredder's Revenge are very similar to the ones in Tournament Fighters.
