Tip for checking the oil on a diesel is to wipe the dip stick with your finger and then wipe your finger with a cloth. If your finger stays dirty you have too much carbon in the oil. Petrol engine is easy. If it smells of petrol it needs changing
The chrome add-ons were probably a cunning anti-theft device. Nobody would have stolen the car, they'd be too embarrassed to drive it. Seriously though, why do people do this? It makes an elegant car look crass.
When I had my TD6 it would never scan as Land Rover, I used to manually add as E53 bmw x5 3.0d and then it would read all modules. That was with a top don scanner, since getting the 4.2 supercharged, that scans fine as LR. Also after resetting the steering angle sensor left and right you normally have to drive a few yards for it to clear any lights. However if ABS keeps coming up that’s the cause of the issues more than likely. Also don’t forget to swap the crank breaker from the foam to cyclone type, lives in the top of the engine, rear, drivers side corner, remove scuttle panel central section (2 13 or 15mm bolts) then it slides out, that allows access to engine cover bolts.
I've had 5 Range Rovers over the years, all petrol. The last one P38 broke my spirit, all four suspension airbags replaced about £200 each at the time. Air suspension manifold block and several compressors but the thing that broke the camels back was the cylinder liners in the 4.6 V8 all came loose and moved. It turned out cheaper to get a used engine than put new top hat liners in. I sold it sharpish and bought a X5 4.8M but that's a different suicidal story 🤪
Looks like Jase has a good buy there. I’m surprised on the MPG figures. Time will tell I guess. Certainly looks better with the bling off. Paint looks pretty good on the video. Will be good to see how it scrubs up with a detail.
A good job Matt, deal with the important things first, keeping the car running. Loosing the bling as the next priority was a must as you don't want to be pulled over every other traffic light. The error codes are always confusing as you mention as an electrical connection can cause a bundle of unrelated faults. Many thanks for sharing. This car has a lot of potential.
Good project for the channel, plenty of great parts out there for a full refresh, especially the interior. I would change the wood to the dark walnut and lose the silver trim which dates and makes the interior look cheap.
A fine day's work Lads, especially the fast motion Harold Lloyd dechroming. The L322 looks a thousand times better. Jason always has a cool daily driver and he now has the best looking Range Rover after early 1990s Vogue. Plenty of oil and filter changes and good branded diesel and she should waft along merrily. Love these and the Range Rover Sport but I haven't got the Balls to own one. Good Health to you both to improve and enjoy her.
When I owned a 2cv, I used to change my oil at the Tip. I would park up then find an old container. Undo the sump plug, whilst the oil was draining I would get rid of my rubbish. When the oil had drained I would refit the sump plug then fill up the engine with new oil. And then dump the old oil in the dirty oil container. Job done! (if I had time I would have changed the oil filter too)😉.
I wish the road tax was as low in the Netherlands as in the UK. 450 pounds a year? That is nothing! €380 a month here! Diesel and very heavy. Road tax is on weight here and a big surcharge for diesel.
With the CAN stuff, can’t you from memory just tie into the high low signals from a working nearby module and then pin those into the CAN connectors on the module that isn’t getting signal? I did a similar thing in my old E39s IBUS wires when the OBD port stopped working for INPA, just tied wires behind the cluster and re routed them into the port and hey presto!
If you want the oil specs you should go to the Total Energies lubrication guide it's usually very good for getting the right fluids and volumes. Som times I question the choice of power steering fluid but that may be because the one they recomment is of a newer spec than what is original to ancient cars
Petrol would get that glue residue off. Or you could buy Goo Gone that’s good too. Glad you were going on about these insane oil change intervals. No way is 20,000 miles right for oil changes. Personally I reckon a max of 5000 before oil changes. No wonder engines keep failing
Great video. However couple of things to point out. If you only put 6 litres, where was the other 3 litres. Done mine twice and have put in 9 litres. The tax on my 04 TD6 is £31 a month. Puts it roughly £370 a year.
Maybe they changed the spec as there are 2 capacities listed, and 6 litres came out when I measured it later. Perhaps also model year changes for better emissions?
The gills and mirrors could indeed be factory, they were an option in period. The grille 100% isn't factory though, it was a "make it look newer without buying the newer headlights" option. Fortunately the one fitted is the lesser evil of the "half a job" upgrade grilles - there's one that follows the contour of the inner headlight a bit like the 2007ish headlights, and causes the headlight wipers to park all over the place!
I got curious after you mentioned the cost of the car insurance for the Range Rover so checked a landrover urban 20 plate worth 45k and shocked to see it was only £900 to insure
I’ve had loads of these and never had to enter a radio code.. most odd.. I think there’s an option to enter one. Because I’ve seen a option to enter a code on the display, but never paid it any attention, didn’t need to.🤷♂️
Sometimes the insurance is cheaper if your the member of a club or have a dash cam. A Swinton Insurance employee reckoned Aberdeen was the cheapest place to insure !
The head unit is just a dumb monitor so you won't find the correct serial there, it will be on a separate unit near the sat nav computer in the boot if it's it the same place as BMWs with exactly the same system. I can't remember if the code is on the radio, or the sat navigation CD/DVD computer which is what actually generates the menus on the screen.
Never see one of those here for that money, I have learned, after a point, the miles on the clock becomes meaningless, it is all about the condition of the whole vehicle. As a comparison , saw a friends Lexus RX350 with 575,000 miles, and runs like a Rolex. Any fault it had, was in the steering, brakes, or wear & tear items. Well done ....Cheers
Ive seen a L405 in my area with a disgusting body kit at that point just buy the sport in the 1st place like why put a ugly big spoiler and body kit on the regular range rover it just doesnt suit it at all
Hi Matt. I have the same model Range Rover (Silvie is her name) as your mate Jason. I don’t get why his insurance is so high. Mine is about £450 fully comp. But his road tax is £450 per year, yet I pay £700.
I started looking at l322 about a year ago, insurance quotes were coming in very reasonable, which is what got me interested, but come the time to buy one and insurance quotes came in at 1800+ so I bought a BMW X5 and pay 550 insurance
He said gas guzzler tax it's not really I pay 305 quid a year for a 2002 fiesta it's gone up by 20 quid for three years on the bounce, ludicrous pricing system we have in this country
@chrisaris8756 yeah like I said, ludicrous, if it was consistent it would bother me less I know of plenty of cars that use the same engine, sometimes even the same car underneath that have different tax prices
@@furiousdriving The codes may just not have been erased since the battery has been low. But since some of the codes were permanent there is definitely something else wrong aswell. Either something is shorting the can network (I once had a fuel pump module do that in a golf deleted around 20 codes by changing it) and it sets random codes on can connected modules.
I find it odd that people wouldn't buy something big and cheap, like this, because it's expensive to tax. OK, you are paying more VED, but you have a fabulous, waft-tastic barge...
Probably the last RR worth buying if you're a driveway tinkerer. Hopefully you can get into the diagnostic system and find out what it thinks it needs 🫣👍🇮🇪
20,000 or 10,000 between oil changes... Not that many years ago it was 2,500 and a gallon of oil was less than 10/- 50p for those unfamiliar with £.s.d. What is wrong with Insurance Companies these days. The most that a company will pay out for a total loss is the amount paid for the vehicle, or was, it's those stupid amount 3rd party claims and the Courts awarding ridiculous compensation amounts along with very high legal fees and no win, no fee solicitors. Come on folks, stop claiming £100k+ for a broken arm or whiplash and we will all be better off.
So for the oil change you jacked up the side of the car with the drain plug on, so the last of old oil and sludge settles on the other side of the sump and can’t drain out of the engine and be replaced? Just stays there to muck up the new oil ? 😮
No, lowered off the jack to drain but do you n ex to see every second to know it happened. And the point of jacking it up is to be able to reach the plug. If you Jack the wrong side it doesn’t help much

Best upgrade this L322 has had in years: removal of that awful bling! Hope you can get the RR all sorted out.
The chrome add-ons were probably a cunning anti-theft device. Nobody would have stolen the car, they'd be too embarrassed to drive it.
Seriously though, why do people do this? It makes an elegant car look crass.
The whole front of this car original is quite distasteful to be honest.
@@rimmersbryggeri The early 322s were certainly better looking before the blingy front end was added during a facelift.
Probably because some people like chrome,me for one.just don't go to over the top I say.

Great series, love a de-bling. Always astonished people put that crap on a car stand back and think yeah looks better. Nope.
Removing the bling certainly gave this Range Rover its elite status back.
I’m looking forward to more content on it❤.
The low coolant warning will be the sensor in the expansion tank buy a complete tank to replace it not just the sensor as the float will be bad
You can get genuine sensors for about £9 which fixed my fault!

Radio code - go into a Land Rover dealer with the v5 and ID matching name on v5 and they'll usually just give it you.
Good tip - Im not used to manufacturers that still exist...
I thought your mate Jason would have tried to help you out with the work on his vehicle from start to finish in this video
