    There is a method that could allow you to do welding on the Mercedes in the dry; just open that side door to your garage and aline the bit of car you want to work on with the door. Also consider removing the driver's door to help with ingress and egress when doing all the shifting.
    You are going to have to turn it around in sometime, so you've got something for the "Junk in the Trunk" feature. (Unless you do "Junk in the Engine Bay?")😁

    LOL, I would never watch again if you got so frustrated with this interesting project that you passed if off! Have faith! For me, the absolutely stunning SD1 / 3500 was the car that I consider the pinnacle Rover, and I think its overall greatness (any flaws overlooked here) overshadows the greatness that was the P6. Only now am I beginning to appreciate the P6 though my American heart will always pitter patter from my first (the blue Corgi Juniors model!) and the ONLY one I have seen in the metal (stuck in Toronto highway gridlock traffic in May 1982). Looking forward to the finished project, of lord and caretaker of such interesting motoring machinery!!!

    Hope the shop gets the Rover going easily. Likely something fairly simple. We hope. I still find it funny to think of the Mercedes W123 as a large car. They were smaller than a North American mid-sized car of the time. Then again, the Volvo 240/740 are what I call small cars. The Panther was a medium sized car, and I have had 5 of them along with 4 of the similarly sized "Torino Birds" which really were mid-sized. The truly full-sized car I have owned was just over 19 feet long, weight a respectable 4,600 pounds, and had a 6.5 litre engine under the bonnet. Considering it was rated to tow 3½ tons, that seems quite reasonable!

    Garages that are too small really are a bugbear of mine. For a year I kept my 2003 Nissan Almera in a council lock up built late 1960s. Boy, that was narrow. Seems like the local authority designed it around a Morris Minor!

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc Рік тому +2

      Yes its terrible. Even here in Sweden which isnt as populated the garages are sometimes quite small. Is/was there no building code for garages? Can only assume the answer is "no" and when they built them they did the bare minimum. Perhaps they simply took the size of the average car the year the garage was built, and added a generous inch clearance on every side? "Should be enough for anybody, shouldnt it" 🤓

    • @Adam.Piper62
      @Adam.Piper62 Рік тому +2

      @@GoldenCroc In the same way UK parking spaces are too small for modern cars it is the same situation with garages. The regulations were set back in the 1950s or so where cars were much narrower and you could easily drive in and get out but with today's hatchbacks being wider than even the largest saloons 50 years ago it becomes a tight squeeze!!

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc Рік тому

      @@Adam.Piper62 Yeah I get it, and my previous comment was a bit flippant for comedic effect, but to me its just madness to not build in a generous margin. Modern cars are larger, yes, but not by an extreme percentage or in inches. I would guess 10 inches or so wider on average?. Building a garage that wont fit every car on the market (yes including Pullman Mercedes) with a very nice margin to spare around it is just daft to me. Guess law makers, builders and buyers of the garages didnt care much.
      My house is built in 1980 and my garage is considerably larger than ones built a decade prior. Still not more than 11 feet wide though, so its not optimal, I would like at least a foot or 2 more. Length wise I got 46 feet, so I should be safe in that regard for a while...
      Btw: Nice PFP!

      @@GoldenCroc , stuff are usually designed, based on the knowledge, habits and economy of the time. It rarely works when someone actually try to predict future needs. Fun fact: An VW Up are about the same size as an Golf mk1, the Up is just higher.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc Рік тому

      @@westmus Not sure its very smart from a utility perspective to build a house or garage to the minimum szie one can get away with at the time of building. Its not like they are easily switched or converted in size later, like most other things can.
      So yes, when it comes to houses "future needs" really should be taken a bit into account, I would say. Lets not forget, there were a lot of cars even at the time that wouldnt fit, certainly an average American car from the era couldnt fit. That small interval of what can be stored in these old garages is just too miserly for mine, and many others, tastes.

    Perhaps fitting the smallest car you have in the garage is wise, because that way you can get in and out, shuffle past, but more importantly you could have it as a bit of a dry set on rainy days perhaps, pop a camera in the corner and slide a table in the middle or do odds n sods rather than outside, i think with the rover in there its made it awkward to go grab that tool you've forgot etc, perhaps a garage spruce up is in order! just a big tidy up and sort through, chuck what don't need, its one thing thats put me off taking on a project while i learn to drive, a small soggy driveway with no space!

      My Mk1 Fiesta is sitting in the old asbestos garage in my garden - one side of the car is tight up against one side, and there's only just enough room to get in and out of the driver's door. Kind of a moot point though, the car's a half-finished project that I haven't touched for years, and in the meantime my wife got a builder to put up some wooden gates on the (narrow) driveway, so I think the car's completely trapped there until I take the gates and the posts down.

    It has length but I bet your E-class is narrower than your Y reg Mini?
    Years ago I had a 1995 W124 and parked it behind my friends 53 plate Cooper.
    Guess what ? In 8 years a 'mini' had grown wider than an 'executive' class saloon!

      @@furiousdriving Must have been an optical illusion. Oddly though a W123 is nearly 2 inches wider than the later W124. But is it any wonder modern cars all seem to have parking dents&dings. Supermarket/car park spaces appear to stay the same width as they were when built in the 60's/70's to accommodate Minors, Minis, Escorts, Beetles, Vivas. Now they're expected to take these extra wide family cars. Not to mention these ridiculous SUV's , the size of an oil tanker with the boot capacity of a Mk1 Fiesta 🤣
