    The R90S is a classic - please keep the bike in the original colours. It’s likely to worth more than the MG!

  • @roverchap
    @roverchap 7 місяців тому +20

    BMW R90S was one of the landmark bikes of the 1970s. Expensive and special, built from 1973 to 76, often called 'the bike which saved BMW Motorrad', as the top brass in Munich were considering shutting down the motorcycle side of the business in the early '70s. Bob Lutz in the USA persuaded them to launch this model, styled by Hans Muth, and it worked. BMW motorcycles became glamourous. I have a 1974 model, originally owned by Patrick Lichfield, 5th Earl of Lichfield, society and royal photographer. That garage find needs saving!

    NCT2s are some of the best tyres that I bought 30 years ago. I put them on several cars until I discovered Yokohama tyres. Those MGs went like trains in a straight line (I tried a Montego), but the PAS was overdone with no feel. The chassis on the ordinary Maestro was actually a nice car to drive (without PAS). I had a MG Metro with all of that velour and steering wheel. Little known fact, the stalks on the MGs of that era were illuminated by fibre optics, so that you could see the controls at night. That disappeared just after the K-series Metro came out and I've never seen it on another car, which is a shame, esp if you are new to a car.

    I always enjoy "barn find" videos, particularly finding out the back stories behind why they were parked up for so long and getting some insight into the former owner's life. I must say both the Maestro and motorbike were obviously well looked after and it was good they were stored in a garage that was in good shape. If Paul doesn't hold onto them, I hope both the Maestro and the bike go to a good home and get back on the road again.

    Loved this, thanks guys. Had an early C reg one in Moonraker Blue, brilliant underrated hot hatch and with power steering to reduce lock from 4 to 3 turns it was reputed by the motoring press to be just about the best hot hatch - hard to believe of a Maestro, but true. Took mine down to Italy on holiday, had it sat at 130 mph (on the overreading speedo) for hours on the autobahn - exactly matching a Mk1 & Mk2 Golf GTI, who probably wondered what the hell is was.

    My late father had an MG Montego 2.0 EFI in the early to mid 90s. It was a G plate. Those alloys do look identical to those we had. It felt like a huge step up from the previous Vauxhall Chevette Estate 1.3L. Excellent video, as a MG maestro owner myself I love these cars. Mine was off the road for 12 years . After restoration getting it started was a pig. You will probably need tank steam cleaning a new pump and maybe a fuel pressure regulator if CO is high. Original ones aren't available but adjustable progressive ones are which improves throttle response
    That car just really needs a dent man and machine polish and body will be show standard
    It's worth getting it done and running and it could make 5 figures

    The MG is nice, but that BMW is the real star of the show this time - a very significant motorcycle. I think that Paul is right to hang on to it rather than the MG. I must admit that I wouldn’t have tried to fire up the MG up without at least misting the cylinders and feeding it fresh fuel from an alternate source. (I don’t doubt that the fuel in the MG looks very much like the fuel in the BMW.)

      I asked him, they asked where the MG was and asked if it would run (who knows when a car has stood for 30 years) then ignored my replies. Would have been a good video for him after the Astra GTE find. His loss. Mr Furious Driving turned out to be the correct man for the job.

    The BMW R90 was a very good bike a mate had one new. IOM pump petrol out for the ferry, as they craned the bikes on and of, no roll on in those days.

      I asked my Uncle Malcolm a few times over the years what the IOM tank pumped out. He never knew. It was 9mths old when he purchased it, trading in a Z1. I think it may have been a demo bike. Not found the log book yet!

      @@paulrobinson3528 when bikes craned on, they put a rope round 2 bikes with a mattress between craned them on, they had to be empty of petrol, so ferry left couple of pints in tank to get to garage, bikers new this would happen so made sure they arrived with small amount of fuel in tank.

    You could sell it to the Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset if such a thing can be done or to Mathewsons (B&C) or to a real enthusiast who would take care of it. My Mum and Dad had a silver e-reg Maestro and a white g-reg maestro.

      Hi Craig, is your Turbo for sale? would go well with my MG 🤣 Joking aside, i can't believe how hard it is to find parts, i really can't. Its just a MG Maestro, loads about in my day. Hard to find stuff like a water pump so might try and rebuild it, can't find a exhaust back box for love nor money. I know stainless is a option but want to keep it standard. It came with Michelin tyres from new, struggling to find new Michelins to put on it that aren't Cross Climates as they don't look period for it. Hope the injectors work ok as they're a small fortune. I can't start looking for a fuel pump until i know what it is.

    Obviously it's not going to fetch ford money, still worth a 4 or 5 figure sum though. A 2 litre was rebuilt on the Bangers and Cash channel; cost a small fortune to rebuild and sold [Mathewsons] for around mid twenties I think?

    Never a fan in the day of the Maestro however now what lovely example. I had GY Eagle NCT2's on a SAAB 9000CS and despite the brand name they were crappy compared to P6000's!

    Think in the day when you got the ferry to the i.o.m. you had to have the tank pumped out,hence the sticker

    IOM ‘’tank pump out’’ sticker….The Steam Packet Company always sucked out all the fuel of all the bikes before they boarded the Ferry to minimise fuel leakage in the event of a rough crossing and it was tough luck, if you had just filled up on the mainland because you’re never compensated for it they then tied all the bikes down everyone of them. in case they fell over on the rough crossing on route to the TT races on the Isle of Man

    • @paulrobinson3528
      @paulrobinson3528 7 місяців тому +1

      And they then sold the fuel back to you when you got on to the IOM with the petrol station they owned lol. Thanks for the Tank pump out info!
