I'd consider changing the title to something along the lines of "best basic DSLR settings for video," But you did a really great job of breaking things down for beginners here.
I've been trying for a couple of weeks the cinematic look... and there was something that I was missing! The ND filter! I didn't think about that before, you solved my problem, thank you very much! Keep being that wonderful and helping :)
The best explanation of camera video settings I have ever seen. I am a professional educator and want to stress this guy knows how to explain things clearly. Kudos to you
Great videos. Even tho you claimed to be basic stuff, the way you put them makes sense and it's easy to understand. For instance, the ND filter tip for handling exposure was pretty great. I used to handle it with increasing shutter speed or ISO, and then wonder what went wrong. Btw, regards from Brazil!
Oh man, this is literally the first time someone's explained shutter speed, aperture, and ISO in a way that I've understood, and then gone on to say when and why to adjust each. THANK YOU!
for 6 months i have been watching hundreds of UA-cam videos to try and get out of just using auto settings..... Your explanation was the first one that made sense and i now see it .....THANK YOU maybe because everyone else talks as if they are talking to someone who already understands the workings of a camera
I am in the midst of completely re-working my channel and starting over. I love film making but am also not the most experienced. I am basically going through your back-catalogue and this video is literally the most helpful and insightful video I’ve watched in ages! I even sat and took notes on my iPhone and I really got to grips with it all. Thank you bro! 👊🏻
I’ve been watching UA-cam tutorials on filmmaking and videography and I felt like I reached a barrier but this channel broke that. Amazing information and quality made. I love these videos so much! Thank you!
omg. this was so helpful. never quite grasped the meanings and tools available to practice a better understanding of my Camera. For a complete novice, like myself, I'm now better understanding what it is I should be doing to get the desired result.
Even though this is basic info I have mostly covered before, many times in some cases, I really appreciate your style of explaining...I learn a lot from all of your videos! THank you.
I found your channel by watching Peter and one day I rolled over into your channel, and im so glad I did. You explain things at a perfect pace and you break things down for the novice as well as the professional, Although I still love watching Peter Im glad i ran across you. Thanks Matti #KeepEmComming
That video is amazing and everyone considering to buy another set or the first set of lense should listen to all this. I bought my first drone recently and didnt know if there is a difference in shutter speed and iso when it comes to making the image brighter, because at its very basic you can increase brightness using both but now i learned the correct way of using settings! Amazing video and it all get very clear after watching this.
I have just recently discovered your channel and have started really getting back into my passion of photography and cinematography with my youtube channel. Thank you so much for this, you really explained it in a way that was easy to understand. I feel more comfortable taking my camera out of auto settings and really creating some amazing photos and videos! Thank you
Simple and well put... just filmed in Belize and Iceland...I wish I had saw your tutorial on F stops fittest but luckily...i didn't want a blurred backround due to the beauty of the location but now I fully understand
Thank you Matti! I’m really starting to get a grasp of this thanks to you. I don’t have ND filters and in my most recent vlogs I was ALWAYS adjusting aperture to get proper exposure. Extremely well explained and even for a novice like myself I totally understand the lesson here. Love watching your videos and learning from you. Thanks for being so open with your content and expertise. I consider you a digital mentor 😉.
Excellent refresher course on all the basics, I really needed this - now I can move on to the more complicated stuff like white balance, black toe, gamma level, knee, J-Log, color matrix, master black. Can you do more tutorials on some of these topics?
These videos have been so useful for me, thanks! I've recently been getting into videography, and have been looking for some back to basics, easy to understand explanation of everything. So many tutorials assume you know this stuff. Thanks again :)
Learned more about camera settings in the few mins I watched .... awesome presentation. Very good teacher and instructor regarding the gear. All the best
Thanks bro your videos help a lot with film school specially to communicate better with my DP because i'm still learning the basics of storytelling, screenwriting and photography.
Thanks Matti. First class video, easy to understand. I am sending this series to my family so they can improve their videos. You are also in my playlists. As they say in Australia: Good on yu mate.
That was EXTREMELY helpful!! I am just getting into cinematography and wasn't really sure how to get that beautiful cinematic effect. My videos came out okay by just winging it but I knew there was way more I could be doing. I am going to implement these ideas and I can't wait to see the results. Seriously, thank you!
Finally some one explains what they are saying. Thanks for this wonderful video... it all makes sense now... thanks Matti... and i wish u a lot of success with your channel...cheers....
Thank you for this series. i have been making videos for a while and I did not know the shutter speed and lens filter tip. Now I know why my footage doesn't look like pro footage. I played around with these tips and I have definitely leveled up.
Thanks so much for this! i really enjoyed it! It was a bit basic for me because i've been into video for a little bit, but i did learn about why we need to shoot double the frame rate, as well as the importance of a variable nd filter! thanks man!
Wow!! I learned so much!!!!! Thank you. I've been watching videos on this for weeks and finally I understand it well enough that I can now make my own creative choices. This is what I needed: Knowledge that empowered me. Thank you!!!
Best video ever, you just answered all my questions... If shooting in F-log dictates a minimum ISO of say ISO 800 like in my Fuji XT2, would you still choose F-Log over a low ISO, or would you choose ISO 100/200 over shooting in F-Log?
Such a good and clear explanation! I learned a lot. Thanks! One ☝️ follow up question I had about the ISO topic is, how do you know what your camera's base ISO is? I've always thought to use the lowest number for the best possible image, but didn't know there was a base ISO that might be higher than that number.
this is simply the best explanation I ever heard! its so clear!!! Thank you! Do you have a video like this about photography or knows a good video like yours? Thank you again!!!
Hi Matt! These videos are so helpful - thanks for making this type of content. Quick question when it comes to settings: do you use manual focus all the time? It’s what’s slowing me down most and can’t quite seem to get the hang of it, especially for shots with a lot of movement. Any tip would help - thanks! -Molly
Happend to watch your videos lately.Am super excited going through your channel..Am a beginner in the area of DSLR.Can you make a video on best DSLR'S for beginners and the must buy lenses for the same?
The most imformative video I've seen on youtube. I have never owned a DSLR but after this video it truly makes it feel more confident. Thanks man for the info!! I own a Canon G7x Mark 2. I may be upgrading to a DSLR soon.
Very nicely done... but I have one decision to do: 24 fps and 1/50 shutter or 25 fps and 1/50 shutter ? What's more important 180 degree rule or 24 fps setting ? What would you do ?
Hey Matti, I just wanna say I absolutely love your videos! I would really like to know how you focus when filming. For instance, what scenarios you would use auto/ manual focus? Also, how do you focus when using the steadicam? I (and millions of others) would love to hear your take on this topic, I’m looking forward to hearing back from you! Maybe a video!? 🎬🤩
Thank you so much for the info, there's so much info about filmmaking on the internet that it can become overwhelming taking in all the little details. This was such a nice fresh of breath air, thank you for this setup!
Hello Matti... First I would like to thank you for the great help you gave me with both videos... I have just two questions if you please could answer me. I have a Nikkon B700 but I couldn't find any LOG mode do you have any suggestions so I can get close to the settings you just explain on both videos... Many thanks.
Thanks for the Cinematic Settings video helps drill the need to stay conscious of the settings in a run and gun push record world. I've been focus on making some very necessary purchase for my Canon 5D Mark II, I have the 50mm 1.2L so my question is will the ND filter you recommend fit on it? Also is the 18-35mm Sigma lens as good as Canon 24-70mm 2.8L lens, because I been checking on how to get wide quality from the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L Lens without spend $1800?
Thanks for this! Very clear and helpful. I would be curious about the 'GAIN', and what are the correlations with ISO. I am shooting most of the time with Sony X70 where instead of ISO there is GAIN. Is there a 'Base Gain'? Thanks!
Another great video!! I need to get a variable ND filter! I usually just adjust my Aperture. But then I can anyway only get as low as 3.5 on my stock 18-135mm lens.
Been following your channel for a while now. Your videos have been really helpful. You talked about a base ISO for different cameras. Pls I'd like to know the base ISO for Lumix GH5S. That's the camera I use. Hope to get a reply from you soon. Thanks
This was Exactly the info I was looking for and couldn't find until now!! I'm new to the mirrorless camera world (GH5). Thank you so much! A HUGE help to me and I can't wait to practice these settings! for the GH5 I bought the native Lumix 12-60 Lens that is 2.8 but now trying to decide what my next best lens should be to achieve that low F-stop for documentary style productions!?! I also think i will need some sort of Lumix telephoto lens for farther away shots.. Any suggestions?
Best Video I have seen regarding new users and Basic settings !! I learned a lot and VERY easy to understand !!! I am excited to start filming with my new Lumix G85! Thanks again !!
Doing photography for a long time now, but recently started filming. This was just the " basic" info I was missing! :) Thx for the info! Learned quite a bit from your 2 vids! :)
Did you see the movie Sacario? It got a best cinematography oscar nomination and there was a ton of that movie that had a deep depth of field. Interesting about not being able to focus on areas out of focus in real life. Hadn't thought of it that way.
Hey! Love your videos, I've learned a lot from your GoPro themed videos but I'm just curious about if there are any immediate go-to's for you when shooting with a GoPro. I have a Hero 5 Black. So, I keep the resolution at 2.7K, 24 frames, Shutter at 1/48. What about ISO? 400? Colour I keep on GoPro, white balance is obviously based on the environment. Sharpness I leave on Medium. Any tips would be much appreciated, as I've been asked to put together some wedding footage in September (don't worry, I have a light and the Rode VideoMic Go for better footage lol). Thanks, TravelFeels!
awesome video I love it! so much value in it! But I'm curious to find out if I am shooting at night the only way to increase the exposure is only by the ISO in order to not affect too much of the quality right?
Hey Matti, love your content. Do you just always shoot in SLOG2 on the Sony A7 or do you use SLOG3 as well. I have heard SLOG 2 outside, SLOG3 inside, is this true? Thanks.
This are the best Camera i can recommend to you. amzn.to/33RmjQT amzn.to/3gTh6vK amzn.to/3iuMaCq amzn.to/3ivtcLP amzn.to/3kBnkmo amzn.to/2PGTLBD amzn.to/33PzmT3
Matt.. Thank you. I am a mobile filmaker and wants to jump using may d3200 beginner cam it's just that I don't know these stuff before that's why I am afraid to use my old camera. Now I am excited to use my old cam and start using it. Thank you man..
Thank you Matt! You're terrific, that helped me a lot! Does the native ISO change depending on the profile? For example they say the native ISO for the GH5 is 400. However some UA-cam confused me and said that's for Vlog and HLG and that the native ISO for cine-d, cine v and natural etc is 200? Can't seem to find the info for the GH5, I see info for the gh5s, but no gh5. Have you heard what it is? thanks so much.
Not too recent hybrid photo cameras did not offer choices for shutter speeds for video nor color logs. Most still don`t today and I guess only available on expensive ones. So, most of your guidance to yield a cinematic look can only be used by those few lucky ones with deep pockets. An additional useful tip to achieve a cinematic look is the choice of lenses. The broader the range of the lens, the broader the room to fine tuning the footage framing during post. Also, in this context, with recent hybrid cameras i.e. the Lumix S1H and the Canon R5, one can shoot in a high definition, say, 6K or 8K (12K now with the BlackMagic) and further downsampling it to 4K. This simple procedure will allow for a much broader room to zoom in the framing during post without falling apart the whole image. These two tips are just complementary technical manoeuvres to preserve the integrity of the cinematic look attempt taken beforehand and in accordance with your most properly advices depicted on your video. You should be proud of your born talent to simplify complex ideas into simple A-B-C steps for the average guy. I am not (most aren`t, I guess) that affortunate in my communication DNA.
Hey Matt, I gotta say: great tutorial, I'm loving your content; that said I kind disagree on your point about ISO, for the most part you're right about it, and it should be kept as low as posible to protect the footage, but sometimes introducing grain can be a rough stylistic or a narrative decision maybe to tell your audience something is off (ie. a memory of a character on a noir film)
Dude the double fps thing helped me a lot, I was wondering why my camera was really blurry in low light ( I used to shoot program auto) then I watched you're video and I shoot manual with double fps (50) like you said in the video thanks for you're work helped me a lot keep up the good work!
This are the best Camera i can recommend to you. amzn.to/33RmjQT amzn.to/3gTh6vK amzn.to/3iuMaCq amzn.to/3ivtcLP amzn.to/3kBnkmo amzn.to/2PGTLBD amzn.to/33PzmT3
Great video . If you're trying to balance a shot & it's exposure & the meter is a little off being over zero slightly or under zero slightly in the negative, what's the lowest or highest you should go if those are the best numbers you could get ?
Bro, your channel is amazing! You explain perfectly without treat us like dumb people. jajajaja As you said once in one of your videos about to be successful at 50, your videos make me feel like I don't need to hurry to understand, and, at the same time, only study is not enough. LEARN, MAKE and REPEAT. So, I keep studying and I hope you keep making more videos so that I try to repeat in my practice. =P Sorry for my English. I'm Brazilian.
Great Teacher. Just finished your Lynda course, quick question, how in the world did you get that logo to reflect on the water like that in your intro?
I learned a ton, I've been making videos for a few months now ans this was always a blurry subject for me, thank you so much! I just order some variable ND filters
Using a fast lens doesn't make sense for wide angle landscape shots. You do want more in focus in those types of shots usually. That's why I think dynamic range is more important that a shallow depth of field.
Hey Matti, thanks for all those videos you're sharing with us! I'm about to get a 1DX MK II very soon, and I was thinking about the base iso you talked about. Do you know it for the Canon 1DX MK II?
Great Video, it help me alot understand how the cameras work :D Im trying to make decision on what camera should i buy to start filmmaking, my budget is 800 euros, do you have any video or recommendation on what should i get? Thanks
Thank you Matte for the camera settings. This definitely made it clear for video settings, but how does this translate into photography? Can you please feel me in. Thank you
thanks man just bought the d3300 and this video really helped me understand the difference between videography and photography with regards to exposure. i have a question though. with regards to doing a hyperlapse . what camera setting do i use? i checked numerous youtube videos and each video explains hw to do it bt completely ignores camera settings cos as u move your camera during a hyper lapse each time the exposure changes bt u have a ten sec interval to shoot between each shot. so does that mean u have 10s to fix your exposure or do you just keep your exposure at a constant for each shot? please answer you have been the only youtuber thats actually been helpful. keep t up man. papa bless! lol :D
This are the best Camera i can recommend to you. amzn.to/33RmjQT amzn.to/3gTh6vK amzn.to/3iuMaCq amzn.to/3ivtcLP amzn.to/3kBnkmo amzn.to/2PGTLBD amzn.to/33PzmT3
Hi there! great video! what is the best way to manage fps in premiere? I mean, i shot some footage at 24fps and some at 30 or 60 for slow motion, what is the best thing to do: import the footages change every clip at 23.976fps and then speed the 30/60 up to have a normal speed, unless I want slow motion? or do I leave them as they are and I slow them down into the sequence if I want slow motion? I hope I made myself clear :) Keep it up, you're doing a wonderful work with your channel
Neil Mutia In premiere, make a 24fps sequence (timeline) and add your 60fps and keep the sequences settings. Then right click the clips you want slowed down and click Speed/Duration and type in 40% in the speed box.
POLL - Was this series too basic or did you learn a lot???!?!
Learnt a lot!
I'd consider changing the title to something along the lines of "best basic DSLR settings for video," But you did a really great job of breaking things down for beginners here.
TravelFeels got something new.. about base iso and.. nd filter thanks buddy keep it raining
I've learnt a lot! I've also shot in "auto-mode'" and never considered manual, but what you have said here it makes so much sense to go manual
I've been trying for a couple of weeks the cinematic look... and there was something that I was missing! The ND filter! I didn't think about that before, you solved my problem, thank you very much! Keep being that wonderful and helping :)
High shutter speed for greenscreen! Key the green out and than add motion bleur in after effects. It will give you a way better key.
The best and most applicable tip for what I'm doing is found in this comment.
Thank you Eric S.
All the best to Mrs. S and the kids x
Thanks man, that's a great tip!
I didn't even thought about that :)
Great series...you definitely explained camera setting in a clearer way that some of us beginners can understand. It was like taking a film class.
The best explanation of camera video settings I have ever seen. I am a professional educator and want to stress this guy knows how to explain things clearly. Kudos to you

Thank you Matti! I’m really starting to get a grasp of this thanks to you. I don’t have ND filters and in my most recent vlogs I was ALWAYS adjusting aperture to get proper exposure.

Legit learning more from you than I ever did at University... Thank you. Travel vidz coming sooooon!
These two parts were the best educational video on Filmmaking! Thank you for clearing lots of doubts!
The most helpful tips was the order in which you think changing about the exposure triangle and the why or the side effects of each part. Thanks you!
These videos have been so useful for me, thanks! I've recently been getting into videography, and have been looking for some back to basics, easy to understand explanation of everything. So many tutorials assume you know this stuff. Thanks again :)
Awesome! Glad you got something out of them 🙏

Thank you this was brilliant! - a bit advanced, but now to go try those settings and practice shooting on the next holiday - love your vids
Great stuff Matti. Thanks. Manual or AV mode better?
Hello Matti... First I would like to thank you for the great help you gave me with both videos... I have just two questions if you please could answer me. Fantastic, really simple and informative tutorial. Great for someone how is new to film making. Please keep up the great work. 👍
Finally the answers to my exact questions! All other youtube videos were confusing.
Great video! thank you so much. What camera do you recommend that takes both great photos and cinematic videos?
Olympus EM-1, maybe GH5? A7rII 1dxII if you have the money? All great cameras
Been following your channel for a while now. Your videos have been really helpful. You talked about a base ISO for different cameras. Pls I'd like to know the base ISO for Lumix GH5S. That's the camera I use. Hope to get a reply from you soon. Thanks

Interesting about not being able to focus on areas out of focus in real life. Hadn't thought of it that way.
This series answered all of my questions, thanks so much for sharing! Can you reco a good ND filter for the Sony a7rii?
Awesome video. This actually answered a long list of questions I had about photography basics.
Thanks, TravelFeels!
great tutorial!
How about drone shots? Do you record in 4k for youtube videos?
awesome video I love it! so much value in it!
Thanks.

Matt..
Thank you for your guide Matti. For 24fps Is it better to keep your appetite 1/50 or 180d? Could you explain what is the difference?

Really helpful, thanks man. Basic for some but super helpful for me. Subscribed and look forward to following more!
Fantastic explanation. Cleared up a lot of questions for me 👌 thanks matti!
Great Teacher. Just finished your Lynda course, quick question, how in the world did you get that logo to reflect on the water like that in your intro?
I learned a ton, I've been making videos for a few months now ans this was always a blurry subject for me, thank you so much! I just order some variable ND filters
Would going to a higher f-stop for filming a landscape make sense? So you get more detail from foreground to background?
Using a fast lens doesn't make sense for wide angle landscape shots. You do want more in focus in those types of shots usually. That's why I think dynamic range is more important that a shallow depth of field.
awesome info!! super helpful for someone like me, a photographer that's just learning video. thanks for all the great content.
Your channel is awesome man, love you work and your tips - thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Hey Matti, thanks for all those videos you're sharing with us! I'm about to get a 1DX MK II very soon, and I was thinking about the base iso you talked about. Do you know it for the Canon 1DX MK II?
Great Video, it help me alot understand how the cameras work :D
Im trying to make decision on what camera should i buy to start filmmaking, my budget is 800 euros, do you have any video or recommendation on what should i get?
Thanks
Thank you Matte for the camera settings. This definitely made it clear for video settings, but how does this translate into photography? Can you please feel me in. Thank you
thanks man just bought the d3300 and this video really helped me understand the difference between videography and photography with regards to exposure. i have a question though. with regards to doing a hyperlapse . what camera setting do i use?
i checked numerous youtube videos and each video explains hw to do it bt completely ignores camera settings cos as u move your camera during a hyper lapse each time the exposure changes bt u have a ten sec interval to shoot between each shot. so does that mean u have 10s to fix your exposure or do you just keep your exposure at a constant for each shot? please answer you have been the only youtuber thats actually been helpful. keep t up man. papa bless! lol :D
Do you have any advice on which variable ND filter to get?
I read so many reviews and there's always something...
Link in description! I really like that one

Hi there! great video! what is the best way to manage fps in premiere? I mean, i shot some footage at 24fps and some at 30 or 60 for slow motion, what is the best thing to do: import the footages change every clip at 23.976fps and then speed the 30/60 up to have a normal speed, unless I want slow motion? or do I leave them as they are and I slow them down into the sequence if I want slow motion?
I hope I made myself clear :)
Keep it up, you're doing a wonderful work with your channel
Interpret them to 24fps and they will be slow motion. (In premiere right click modify > interpret footage > interpret at 23.976
and then speed them up if I want them in real speed? right?
Im confused. Slowmo's should be shot atleast 60fps, right? So if I want to slowmo something, do I add it on a 24fps timeline and export it as 24fps?
Neil Mutia In premiere, make a 24fps sequence (timeline) and add your 60fps and keep the sequences settings. Then right click the clips you want slowed down and click Speed/Duration and type in 40% in the speed box.
Thank you for your reply! Does it have to be 40%?
One of the best tutorial videos I've seen
Travel Feels, how do you keep your subject in focus while moving? Do you shoot mf or af most of the time?
Thank you.
