Just got my first lathe for Christmas so i'm immersing myself in various how tos...and am finding yours extremely helpful in showing angles, stances, techniques etc. Truly appreciated. Once i get a little more over the intimidation factor i'll start playing with my first blank.
I think the best place to start is with a small, wet limb. Just put it between centers and practice. Turn a little slower at first 500-600 RPM. Sam

Sam! I have been turning for a while but using carbide tools. I mostly turn multi layered segmented bracelets. I have a pretty expensive set of HSS turning tools but am self taught. I have never dared to use them because of not having someone handy to teach me. This video has been very useful in learning how to use some of the tools. Thanks! Ron

I am new to wood turning and this is the best video I have seen on UA-cam. One thing I never seem to see is advice on where to position the tool rest with respect to the center line of the wood. Great video, thanks Sam for all the effort you put into this.

I've been on a bit of a hiatus from the lathe. Just getting back into it. I have to say that Vortex Tool is pure wicked! I have a Thompson fluteless that might get the Vortex treatment! Good video!

Beginner with wood but experienced with metal work. Couldn’t help noticing the parting tool is used flipped 180 degrees compared to metal lathe work. Anyone knows the reason for this?
Sam; Just came across this. I have been making gnomes for Christmas. Peeling cuts and planing cuts are no problem for me, but making that tapered hat is not easy for me. One suggestion. I attach a stick on tape measure to the bar of my oneway jig on the side away from the clamp. Then I write the measure on the shank of the tool. Allows me to repeat the same setup each time I grind that tool.
This video was so well done. It was long, but a good long, if that makes any sense? The close up shots are so much appreciated. Your time and efforts are very much appreciated by me. Glad to see your hand is healing nicely. You have a great survivor instinct. I can tell as a Cancer survivor myself it is shown in your I can do attitude . Please keep up the great videos.

James I did find the "profiler" I did not they made this device. I think I will save my money. Always good to learning sharpening first without a jig. Sam

Since I bought mine, they are much less costly and offered by more producers. I got one from Craft Supply USA and one from D-way tools. I see no difference in quality in either tool. I think I would find one that costs as little as possible. Sam

Im just starting out and this video is a godsend - has opened up my eyes to alot of new stuff - that after having gorged myself on all the videos i can watch on here. I see you're turning stuff at 2500 rpm - If my lathe only goes upto 2100rpm, would that be a problem at all, or just mean i would have to turn small diameter stuff a little more slowly?
I really like your video. Can you please show us where the tool rest is in relationship to the center for each tool.
I know the height is very important on weather you get a catch or not. I know I need this instruction. Thanks

This is a good question----maybe one for my next "notes" video. I am not sure if there is an easy answer. One, the diameter of the wood changes and you must change the tool rest. Different tools require a different height. Ex: the skew chisel, in my opinion requires a rest at a comfortable height. If the rest is too low, the handle is too low and not comfortable. I think generally, it should be right at the center line.

Thanks again, your library of videos is invaluable. As a novice at sharpening, I have some concerns; I seem to be getting a sharper point than desired on spindle gouges with steel fixed in the handles (Sorbey). I'm using the Wolverine setup with a Rikon slow speed grinder, (not using the vari-grind attch) . My sense is maybe the shape of the end of the handle in the jig may be a factor?

I’m not sure how you’re sharpening this tool, are you putting the end of the handle into the V arm? When sharpening a gouge, you should be swinging the handle from side to side to give you a swept back wing.

I don't have a video. I use 2 CBN wheels but they are costly. But nothing wrong with stone or matrix wheels. But you must find ones that work with the complex steels we use today. Sam

Is it necessary to have a bowl gouge to turn the inside of a bowl? I don't have one and have tried to use a roughing gouge or a spindle gouge but, they want to grab and throw the gouge to the outside of the bowl.
I am new to turning and trying to get started. I have only turned a couple bowls.
The main thing in answer to your comment IS...do not every use a spindle roughing gouge on a bowl or cross grain piece of wood. A spindle gouge would work but it is probably too small. A 5/8" bowl gouge is important to have. Sam

Speaking of practice maybe you could practice holding the handle in your left hand and guide the chisel with your right hand for the left hand cuts as I find this way more comfortable and more accurate then trying to cut the left side of the bead from a right handed stance. Plus one has full control due to one guiding with the right hand, and as you cut right right handed you will see what I mean if you try this out. Nice video full of information. Hey Sam, Hope you are doing well. I am just curious about something. At 18:35 in the video when you are cutting the cove I can't quite tell if the bevel of the gouge is rubbing or not (maybe only a very small portion is rubbing?). Can you please comment? Thank you.
Good eye....I think at first in cutting this cove the bevel is not really rubbing the wood but toward the end-it is. I may have a micro bevel on the tool that can't be seen. I think part of it is the camera angle. Something else-I think the bevel on this tool is really long. A tool with a shorter bevel would be better. Sam

Sam, I see you are getting fine curls when you rotate the blank by hand; I cant get those;why? Do you hone the edge of your turning tools, after grinding, as you would do with carving tools?
Seth, a lot goes into having a properly sharpened tool. The proper grind for the nose angle in degrees and how you sharpen the tool. Really too much to cover right here. I just think it takes a lot of practice and experience. Also you might try practicing on wood that is a little softer that will help Sam

I have never used that particular tool. I did look it up to see it. I think if you made many spindles and such, it would be a good tool. But I think there are other ways to size a spindle. Sam
