- As the Christmas season approaches, Sam turns a rustic birdhouse ornament with an area of bark edge.

So THAT is what those texturing tools do. That looked awesome! I wondered what those were for when I saw them in a magazine. There are so many fun things to do in turning. Before I got a lathe and tried it, I thought turning was just pens, bowls, and table legs. I quickly learned there is a whole world of different things you can make with a lathe. I like your videos because you show all kinds of stuff. This birdhouse would make a perfect Christmas present for my sister, so I'm going to make one. I made some of your ring holders and enjoyed that very much.
Yes, woodturning encompasses a vast world of options. Coloring, texturing, burning, painting. and much more.

Sam, do you have a source for the little birds for the perch? I think it is a cute idea and will go over well. Also, I'm looking for very small eyes to screw into the top and the right kind of thread or wire to hang them with. Mike Peace recommends a type of beading string and I found it at Michael's craft store. I'd prefer to find a good online source and order it all from one place. What is your source for things like this? Thanks.

I used guitar strings on my wire burners that gives me 6 different sized burn lines.

Nice ornament. Like the offset to allow for the perch or a sort of porch when you don't have the branch. Learned a few tips to try on my next one. You mentioned those maple rounds. Wondering where to get them. Several years ago, there was a guy that had a pile of them by his drive and was selling at a dollar each. I which I had stopped the car and picked some up. I had not seen them since until your video.

I also use guitar strings, but if you want even wider lines use the stings from a bass guitar. Very bold lines

Hi Sam I was just wondering why you don't use a compass for marking tenons?
You mean dividers? Sometimes I do. It depends often if I can reach the area more safely with one tool or another. I use many tools to accomplish something. It may be just because the tool is sitting there. Sam

Sam Angelo I was just looking back at this video and I’m glad you’ve dropped the dubbed in music on your latter videos. It is more distracting than helpful. IMHO; The sounds of the lathe are better to fill the gaps between your narrative. Otherwise I liked the video and neat ideas. Thanks.

I have 2 cameras. I use both Canon DSLR cameras. One is a t3I and the other is a t6I. I think the DSLR is a great way to go. Easy to adjust and set up. I have 5 videos on making a video. Just search my channel. Sam
where do you get Russian olive?

In Wyoming it is ALL over the place. Few people appreciate it. It is cut down all the time by farmers/ranchers who just find it annoying. It does grow fairly big. The burls are wonderful. But I can get an endless supply of it. It is nice wood when turned but cracks very badly. I really don't turn bowls from it for this reason. Sam
