Have Been turning 20 years and learned so much from your video, not from watching but listening. It makes the video so much ,more better to learn from. Keep talking makes your videos a cut above the videos that just show quiet turning.---keep talking.
Just started turning a couple weeks ago, and this has been the best view of the skew edge I've seen. Had a bunch of practice today on some firewood! Thanks so much for the videos!
Thanks Sam, I've been turning for a couple of years and have avoided using the skew for most of that time but lately I have been doing more spindle turning and realized that the skew could speed up things so have just recently been trying my hand at it since I have gotten quite comfortable with other gouges. Love the close ups.
This great video reminds me about Catches. I realised cutting "downhill " is safe. Cutting " uphill " is big trouble . Best turning video I have seen so far .
Richard Raffan's tutorials are outstanding, and Richard is well-known for utilising a radiused skew chisel (which helps to minimise catches) All my skew chisels with the exception of my ½" Hamlet skew chisel are radiused.
I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I never had much trouble with the skew. Far from a master but not afraid of it. I started using it before I heard how hard it is to use plus the horror story’s. Great vid as always Sam.
I just found this video and appreciate your instruction. Yesterday I found the old video you referred to on using the skew chisel and tried some of the techniques. Yes, as you pointed out, I need to practice more. Thanks for the reminder.
Brilliant video Sam, thank you 😊. I have struggled with V and chamfer cuts with the skew, getting many frustrating run backs and your video has addressed my problem. I was letting the cutting edge contact the chamfer instead of just the point, your still shot was an excellent example of where my skew should be positioned. Thank you once again Sam, happy New Year to you and your good lady wife 😊💐😊💐
Terrific video Sam. Thank you. Can't agree more with all the above comments. You are a real master teacher, and I love your style and your humor. Please keep 'em coming! Happy, healthy 2018. Lou
Oh yes lovely and warm here Mid 70's not like our aussie neighbours well over a hundred degrees - poor things!! Looking forward to the next video Sam - take care Les
My wife says my humor is a little skewed, so I'm good there. ;o) As to my wood turning, I still need a lot of practice. I think I'm slowly getting better. Thanks so much for posting this type video. Others move so quickly through the moves it makes it hard for me to grasp the idea. Your pace it much better on that point. I hear its a bit chilly up your way these days, so stay warm and have a great New Year.
Thanks. I just watched another by Allan Batty, and am looking forward to checking out your recommendation for Richard Raffen. I got excited about the finish you get and went out and tried it on a bowl I'm working on. I can't agree with you more on practice, practice practice.
Sam...This is a very good video, I really like your video angles. I think many folks put very good videos and information but their camera angles leave it difficult to see what's really being done. Well done...
WYOMINGWOODTURNER Not sure if you can remember from one of your videos a while ago talking about portable chisel set using quick-release fittings? Well I’ve made my first ‘prototype’ in the link here if you’d like to have a look, thanks... ua-cam.com/video/RUF0uo-YXMA/v-deo.html
Colin I did look over the video. The quick-release system looks great. I think it is very nicely milled. But I had trouble with the sound. It was very low....? Sam
WYOMINGWOODTURNER oh yes possibly.... I only have my iPhone to shoot video and sometimes I don’t edit so well lol. Thanks for watching and your positive comments.
Lol, I just clued in that your puppy never stops roaming. Now that I think about it, I think I have seen the little roamer on many of your videos roaming, but will have to look back at some to see if the little roamer has roamed before.
Yes, I like that. She IS a roamer. She is usually looking for a ball, hiding a ball, or wanting me to throw a ball.....to get all this accomplished-she roams. Yep. Sam
Bigger spindle....bigger tool. That is pretty basic advice. But I think the confusion is that we can use a really big skew on small stuff. Maybe not so much in the other direction. I would just experiment. Sam
Hi Sam, Happy New Year! Great video. I only have one skew and I am still trying to learn how to use. What angle would you suggest I grand it too? Thanks for the help. Bob from SoCal.
Always amazing videos! You are a wonderful teacher but still the skew chisel is my least favorite tool on the rack. LOL. I promise you I will try harder and practice more but I was really noticing how your chisels are sharpened. Mine is like from the factory with a very small bevel on both sides. Yours even looks like it might be rounded a little bit? Happy New Year my friend and I'm looking very much forward to another year of your videos!
Thanks Gary I do put a slight convex curve on my skews. But lately I have been playing with a very straight grind. I have always had a curved cutting edge and I am experimenting a bit. Sam
WYOMINGWOODTURNER thank you Sam! Going to try that to see if it helps because I get catches all the time and I try using that lower Edge. You are the master my friend!
Hi Sam, I'm a newbie woodturner from the UK. I've learned quite a bit from your videos. However I'm still getting catches which ruin my pieces. I'm using soft pine only because it's cheap and readily available. I'm finding the finish to be poor and if I try to clean it up I end up with a catch. Can you advise me if this softwood is unsuitable for turning ? Cheers
Softer woods are fine for turning but can leave a finish that is inferior to that resulting from a nice hard wood. I suspect if you are getting catches you are losing bevel contact. If you are getting catches from a skew chisel-join the club my friend......What might help is grinding your skew chisel to a 40º angle or so. Mine are ground more to a 25-30 º angle. This is really sharp and can be much more grabby. Just takes lots of practice. Sam
WYOMINGWOODTURNER I'm not a Turner yet but I intend to build a treadle lathe this year so I am watching as many videos as possible. I am a joiner by trade n I use many machines except a lathe. It just seems logical to avoid having catches. Takes away having leading or trailing edges.
Thanks Sam. Watching your videos has provided me with the confidence to start practicing with the skew. One question and sorry if I missed it, what speed were you doing most of the turning for this video. I was having some trouble with my skew work not being very flat (I was turning a piece of ash and while the finish was smooth it had waves in it) and not sure if that was due to the poor quality of my skew (cheap set of tools that came with the lathe) or if my speed was too slow maybe? any thoughts? Much thanks Sam, Ted M
I am constantly changing my speed so I am not sure if I can answer that. But generally turn as fast as you can-SAFELY. Re: you problem with ash. You may be turning too slowly. But the grain in ash is hard-soft-hard-soft so you may git an uneven surface. But ash is difficult cause it is basically very hard. Sam
You were right Sam, the ash with the hard, soft, hard, soft grain was causing the ripples in my work. I tried a piece of box elder with much better result!! :) Thanks Sam, Ted.
Thank you for this inspirational video! As a wannabe turner (not even a novice) practice tips are great, but also a reminder that even someone as experienced as yourself find these practice sessions useful, if not necessary, to be a good turner. With the flattery out of the way, it looks in your cove cut as you only switch to having the long point leading at the very end of the cut, was that intentional or were you just being tired?
Yes I suggest you do watch the entire video. However the main point I would make is in reference to the title of the video. This video deals with practicing and may be directed to those who have not yet mastered the skew chisel. At 2:40 in to the video I am making a peeling "cut". This is a good place to start if you are new to using a skew chisel. At 4:40 in to the video I introduce more of a shear "cut" which is the next step beyond a simple peel. Are you starting to get the progression here of skills using a skew chisel. Now....in your comment you say, "I only see scraping and not cutting." So it appears you only watched the first few clips when I was turning on the bottle stopper. I won't go into any further play-by-play of the video. Sam
Happy New Year Sam, the skew always scares me but my New Years resolution is to use it as much as I can in 2018. No doubt I’ll be referring to your videos on the skew a lot lol. If you haven’t checked him out have a look at “woodturner21” he’s amazing with the skew. Pete
my baby finger got whacked real good from one of those catches but in fairness I don't have the proper tools and they are not very sharp , I've only had the lathe fro a week or so
Milind, I am still getting catches. And I am still practicing. The best thing to do is to use a green Limb two or 3 inches in diameter and just practice on that. Try not to use really hardwood to practice with good luck Sam
Have Been turning 20 years and learned so much from your video, not from watching but listening. It makes the video so much ,more better to learn from. Keep talking makes your videos a cut above the videos that just show quiet turning.---keep talking.
great video :) I think its so important to get catches 'out of your system'. Once the fear is gone, things are so much easier. Thanks Sam :)
Just started turning a couple weeks ago, and this has been the best view of the skew edge I've seen. Had a bunch of practice today on some firewood! Thanks so much for the videos!

THANKS.... I put that in caps cause it is also one of my pet peeves. AND when the turner never changes the camera angle.. Thanks much Sam
So, you use a skew as a scraper to start and then use it as a skew? Interesting to note the difference between US and UK turners.
Very useful video! Thank you for sharing.
Great teacher Sam, thanks
Thanks Sam great job I’m not that great with a skew I try I have more catches I’ll be doing pretty good so I think an the a catch
I do have a very long version of this video. I have not decided yet whether to put it up. Sam

What would happen if you round the toe n the heel thus taking the point off.
You may not be able to use the point-which is important for some cuts. But are you saying this will prevent catches-interesting. Sam

The cove cut I did was terrible. I usually do use a spindle gouge for this cut. And I may have been tired as well.
Sam
Happy New Year Sam---- practice, practice, practice then give up and buy a spindlemaster! Just joking but they work very well👌👌👌👌👌
