12 Lovecraftian And Grotesque Conan Villains Explored, Lovecraft And Robert E Howard Shared Universe

- As much as we’d like Conan to be addressed as Conan the Barbarian, we think he is a lot more than just that and referring to him simply as a barbarian kind of limits the esteem that his character truly deserves. A 1932 creation of the American author Robert E. Howard, one who was looked upon as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre, the character of Conan continues to exist till date. Older to every DC and Marvel superhero out there, he is more like a legendary hero - a born leader, an intelligent strategist, a highly skilled warrior, downright chivalrous and most importantly, the true alpha of the Hyborian Universe. Full credits to Howard for whipping up a spectacularly new era of fictional history aka The Hyborian Age. Mind you, Conan is no superhuman but his proficiency in martial arts along with that smoldering, brutish, brawny appearance is a living proof of the fact that he has had quite a lengthy list of enemies to raise his sword against.
Speaking of villains, it goes without saying that Conan categorically has had many who have been worthwhile challenges and in today’s video, we are going to stress on 12 of Conan’s Lovecraftian villains, explaining them and their backstories in detail. You better be ready for this! - Розваги
I would argue calling him a Barbarian does not limit his awesomeness. He charges in full throttle, doesn't partake in frivolous talk, defeats his enemies through strength and skill of blade. He is the example of the perfect barbarian.
Yeah but a "barbarian" is just any non-ancient greek
@@shinobi-no-bueno yeah but I was referring to the fictional depiction of barbarian. Like what's in dnd

Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft were friends.

They actually were friends and no they didn't email each other. Regular snail mail
@@hotpopcorncake Howard sent snake rattles and large insects in formaldehyde to HPL.
@@oblomurg Yea along with Cd rom of AOL and beetle borg dvd set.
Since Howard and Lovecraft were friends, their original writings even had some minor references to each other, like if the Conan world and the Lovecraft stories all happened in the same universe. However, as time passed and Conan became more popular, those references were taken out of the texts in future reprints. It is today quite hard, basically impossible, to find a copy of the Conan stories with the Lovecraftian references.
You can find them in Lovecraft works though
i feel like reprints these days are more people making official fan fiction rather then true retellings cus they change so much these days
Howard and Lovecraft never even met.
@@kevinrobinson1357 they were correspondents and last i checked Howard was apart of Lovecraft's circle so despite the fact they seemed to disagree a lot i would imagine they were at least friends to reference each others work at all
@@lordsathariel4384 you need not be friends to have professional correspondence.
I'm curious to why you made a statement saying Howard ever referenced Lovecraft's work.
Study postal history, and read about Howard's character.
Thulsa Doom: pre-He-Man Skeletor?
Conan the Barbarian movie was supposed to be Kull the Conqueror. During preproduction they had hired Matel (I think) to make toys and stuff. But they were soon deceived. For there was another... oh wait wrong story. They went through many rewrites and voila Conan the Barbarian. Matel was stuck with Kull and all the other toys. They decided to write a story and voila He-Man was born. This is also why Thulsa Doom, a character from Kull, is in the Conan universe. During the many rewrites they left him in there for Conan to fight.
Pretty much
Also seems the inspiration for the king of the underworld on Blech. Or Bone Daddy.
You hit the nail on the head my friend.
@@Ulgarth basically
So glad you pointed out that Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) in the movie was probably based more on Thoth Amon. Howard and Lovecraft were actually friends in real life so naturally I clicked "Like" as soon as I stated watching
This should be changed to “12 villians Conan fought from Robert E Howard’s universe to Marvel and movies”. So far in the first two entries, Conan fought neither of them in Howard’s universe.
Edit: In total, Howard’s Conan only ever faced 3 of the villians on the list.
Yea , after all Howard's Conan is the real canon one , from the books being the creator and all . Mind telling those 3 enemies ?
Never understood way Marvel needed to have Conan , same as DC had He-man aparrantly , in those comics .
@@Kobalt_Rax_the_one needed? Nobody needs any entertainment. Marvel paid for the rights to Conan

Tsathoggua was actually created by Clark Ashton Smith in his 1929 short story "The Tale of Satampra Zeiros," not by Lovecraft. Also, the spider god Zath reminds me of a similar spider god called Hlo-Hlo in “The Distressing Tale of Thangobrind The Jeweller,” from Lord Dunsany's The Book of Wonder (1912). Hlo-Hlo is similarly depicted as an idol statue in a temple.

Interesting resemblance of the skull-faced, glowing eyes Tulsa Doom and Conan to that of barbarian He-man & Skeletor.
The creators of He-Man wanted to make a Conan cartoon but knew they couldn’t.
Definitely a Conan Shared Universe. But I think more than few were not created by Robert E. Howard. I still found the video awesome. Definitely Lovecraftian & Grotesque Villains!
In a savage sword of Conan comic Conan is shown his death three times once by dagoth, once by ghouls or flesh eaters and finally in a pit with a creature by a wizard always liked that edition because you never saw Conan die but in this comic you see it three times
I remember reading about how Lovecraft offered his stories including the things like the university that housed the Necronomican and other things that those things could be borrowed or used to craft a better world of fiction then could have been made without the sharing of the ideas.
I also remember reading one of the stories by Howard about Conan that he felt more like the story that came to his paper were more like they seemed to be the thing that put the whole idea from the beginning to the end of the story wasn't something that he crafted but something that was even more of a mystery to him as it was for others trying to figure out how his writing craft had been.
Lovecraft had no idea that his writing would catch on and become popular, he allowed his "friends" (he had extensive pen-pal relationships but very little IRL contact) to use his story elements and build upon the canon.
Howard has said Conan was like a guy in a bar telling him about his life. Howard was truly talented as he could bang out single draft stories very quickly.
Both of these men were ahead of their times and truly troubled deep in their souls.
My favourite fantasy barbarian EVER!

For those DnD players here, the movie version of Dagoth was the inspiration for the end monster of the classic adventure "The Lost City", named Zargon. Zargon is still with the game, now called Zargon the Returner, and can be used as a Warlock patron for Great Old One Warlocks.
Goodman games republished the lost city fro 5e with extras and repritns
Lovecraft and Howard were kinda buddies and they interchanged ideas frequently...so in a lot of cases certain protagonists and places appear in stories of both authors.

Rune, the
vampire-god from outer space, in The dark God deserves a mention but how can you just skip Yara and Yag-Kosha?
Well, Yoga of Yag, aka, Yag-Kosha, awesomely iconic though it might be, wasn't anything like a villain, right? And we get too little on Yara beyond his role as "the mark" of Conan's theft attempt and source of the alien being's torturous slavery.

He goes on to become the Emperor of Mankind in the grim Darkness of the 41 Millennium.
Soo does this mean Conan exists in the marvel universe?? About 10 -15 thousand years ago?? Fuckin epicc.

Conan will always be The Cimmerian
Love this. Conan is an underrated Marvel character. A Netflix movie or series would be great for this character. Thulsa Doom's death at the hands of Conan in the movie was one of the most brutal scenes ever.

When that camel spit on Conan and Conan hit it on top of it's head. I died of laughter. 🤣😎
Best part of the movie
I was wondering if Sega' s Golden Axe ever borrowed an enemy from Conan. Wraal confirms it. Looks just like the Death Adder
Golden Axe's whole existence is due to Conan. And a little bit from Lord of the Rings.
Quite certain they both are inspired by Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer painting. That according to the wiki, also inspired the visual of Raoh, the top villain of Fist of the North Star. Wow, you learn something new every day.
The writing for this channel is awesome. It's either an outsourced script from a non-English country, or written by someone who couldn't pass AP English. "And such so that much as was is, surely."
Who ever writes these has to verify the story first. You keep getting some facts wrong. Go back to HP Lovecraft's books and have a read, please.
I don't think they look up anything 😂 because their wrong a lot

What if thulsa doom being in Conan's time wasn't an accident or a mistake by the writers of the movie, What if he survived the cataclysm that ended the thruian age but in his weakened state the dark got set gave him a new purpose and that's how the cult started.
I've actually always thought this- perhaps he laid low and survived.
but didnt thulsa doom die in the first movie when conan decapitated him.
@@willhuey4462 Kull (and Thulsa Doom) are from the Thurian age in the REH books, which predates Conan's Hyborean age.

The conan movie isnt really pure conan its an amalgamation of Kull and Conan. Which works as Conan was basically a retooled version of Howards earlier Kull stories hell conans first story Phoenix on the sword was a rewrite of by this axe I rule
@@vonfaustien3957 oh I know. They really butchered the classic Conan mythos, but it works so well I don't really mind.
I think Thulsa Doom was only in like two of the original Howard Conan stories and in one never encounters Conan himself, not the "archenemy" the movie portays.
Conan is just straight up proof that if you're strong enough shit like Cthulhu doesn't matter.
Oh, Cthulhu is rising from the depths of R'Leigh? Have you tried stabbing him?
So glad you gave wraarl (devourer of souls) some love. He always stuck out to me as a favorite nemesis to Conan. I love his design.

it seems like Dr Strange and Conan would be most close together with the connection of the Eldrich gods as the connective thread

Damn it I wasn't ready for this
While I enjoy those films, especially the first (still a masterpiece), Conan in the movies is practically NOTHING like he is in the classic stories. Hopefully we will one day get a version of that either in a show or movie. Thulsa is basically Thoth-Amon...not sure why they just didn't call him that.
Wrarrl is my favourite Conan’s Comic Series villain.
A kind-of good idea for a video but, man, written and spoken very oddly. I love Conan, both in the books and the original Marvel era, I also love the writing of Lovecraft, but come on - most of these villains were not what is considered “Lovecraftian”. A similar video that just covered the various supernatural threats from Howard’s stories (and definitely didn’t include cartoon and video game characters) would be most appreciated.
But Shuma-Gorath seams to moral to with havign acuall emotion and understandable goals to be a propper love craft creature it doesn't fit with the outer gods

Man, I really wish we‘d get a couple new Conan movies, with the production values and attention to detail of Peter Jackson‘s LOTR movies
Now that's a good idea
Thoth Amon has one more thing to his credit. He is the original Conan villain. Yes, you can argue the nobles of Aquilonia were in The Phoenix on the Sword, but they were just men. Thoth was so much more.
Even if he and Conan never faced off face to face 😁.
When are going to actually get a Conan movie that does justice to the character and his world?
Never, as every movies are PG13 nowadays
Hey man, dune happened/is happening. So you never know!
The very first movie, although not based a specific Conan story, certainly does the character and his world justice. Its not a one for one adaptation, but it gets the most important thing right and that's the spirit of the character, world, and tone down to a T. Plus it has one of the most awesome movie soundtracks ever, hopefully we get another moie like the first one.

Funny that the last part of conans quote was cut off.....
Conan came from the earlier tales Howard wrote of King Kull. Many of those tales were just re-written as Conan. Like any writer, Howard had to work throug his ideas until they were cohesive, so this was only a normal way of doing so. You could look at the writings of Lin Carter and others and see the same process. For more swords and sorcery by Howard, check out his "Bran Mak Morn" tales. Howard, I think Howard would have been skeptical about having his stuff in comic books, but if they were paying, he would have written for them I'm sure By the time of his death in 1936 however, his western stories were doing so much better, he had already begun turning away from writing fantasy. Unfortunately, this video does not deal with the Howard/creator wiritngs only. So much was skipped over and neglected in favor of exploring more recent Conan writings, that to put quite bluntly, I do not think Howard would have ever written or even considered for his character. This IS a very good video however, and I understand why and appreciate it a lot. Might I make a suggestion? Have you ever thought of covering this character in parts? I think you could easilly get 4 parts out of this at least - just focussing on Conan. Think about it. Consider it. I think you could do it justice. Howard DID write some short stories directly connected to Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos and was an active member within the 'Lovercraft Circle'.
