Kull the Conqueror Origins - Conan The Barbarian's Gritty Spiritual Predecessor - Explored In Detail

- Kids of the new generation will rarely know the magic of reading a storybook while pretending to study or eagerly counting days for the next edition of comic books to arrive. Has the ascendancy of technology bid farewell to the world of reading? I am sure it has not. Let us salute and pay tribute to the legendary author Robert E Howard and take you to his world of fiction, which has mesmerized generations of horror, fantasy fans for many decades. Today we lift the curtain and reveal the inspiration behind his creation of the legendary character ''Conan the Barbarian", which is none other than, ''Kull the Conqueror''.
The first story of Kull appeared on the shelves in the August of 1929 titled, ''The Shadow Kingdom'' in Weird Tales magazine, followed by ''The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune'', in September 1929. Before Howard's premature death in 1936, another story on Kull titled ''Kings of the Night'' appeared in November 1930, but Kull was not the primary protagonist here. The story's main character was Bran Mac Morn, another heroic character of pulp fiction by Howard. The most surprising fact is that the unpublished, rejected tale of Kull named ''By This Axe I Rule'', was rewritten into the introductory superhit Conan story, ''The Phoenix of the Sword'', which was issued in December 1932 in Weird Tales.
The stories bear striking resemblances regarding the plot, while the main differences in the levels were the time and place. The fictional period when Kull belonged was the Thurian Age, which ended with the great Cataclysm paving the way for the Hyborian Age when Conan stories were framed. Both the adventurous barbarians shouldered the revolutions and became rulers of powerful nations of the world. But while Conan ruled Aquilonia, Kull ascended the throne of Valusia. Despite the analogy of Kull and Conan, Howard evidently characterized them differently. But as rightly said by Douglas Cohen, ''Without question, the most important connection between these two characters is that without Kull of Atlantis there never would have been the icon known as Conan the Barbarian''.

Id imagine the dead Atlantean king that Conan stumbled upon was Kull
Same as a way to pass on the torch.
Except for the fact that the dead King had a sword, not an Ax. So More likely, it was either a descendant or a totally different King altogether.
@@johnlloyddy7016 so what if the dead skeleton had a staff with a cat on it & carved out of unearthly wood (instead of the Atlantean sword)
Who would the skeleton be then? :)
@@johnlloyddy7016 Except for the fact that Kull used swords more often than axes. And, in the stories Kull had the Atlantean sword.
I second this! It is now part of my head cannon! Thank you.
I saw Kull the Conqueror in the theater along with my classmates. It felt like another tv production of Kevin Sorbo's Hercules the legendary journeys but we enjoyed it.
I feel the same. I wish Arnold would have done the movie and John Milius or John McTiernan had directed it.
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812
Probably I would like JAMES HELLWIG played the role of KULL THE CONQUEROR.
I had never thought about it, but it would be awesome if we could get a Kull series that ends with him sitting in his throne room as the ceiling comes crashing down holding the Atlantean sword and calmly accepting his fate. And that helmet.
Robert E. Howard wrote all these stories while he was in his 20’s. He passed away at age 30.
Yes it was a suicide
@@robertstanton561 super sad evan sadder was when I found out the great depression took his mother ad he lost his reason to live
I've just started reading the chronicles of Conan and I'm blown away by his talent as a writer.
Did my research to find he shot himself at 30 so basically he wrote almost all his story's in his 20's like you say which is mind blowing.
His mother was his best friend and she'd come close to death fighting her tuberculosis before it eventually took her and Howard had said he'd follow her...
If only someone could have told Howard his mother wouldn't want him to follow her before his time...such a massive loss...
I've ordered Howards book of horror story shorts and his Solomon Kane collection.
I'll be buying this Kull stuff too.
Howard clearly inspired many including King and G.R.R.Martin.
I got into Howard through my love for Lovecraft who Howard was good friends with.
What a talent he was.
When I listened to The Shadow Kingdom for the first time through The Cybrarians rendition... I was blown away. I though Conan stories where the top of Robert E Howard's skill, but there's a much deep level to the Kull stories that ring True on a primal level
Where can I find that? It sounds interesting!
The Cybrarian readings are excellent. 😊

First Kull short story The Shadow Kingdom is incredible. I listened to the audio version on youtube this summer and I was captivated by the writing. Masterpiece.
I always felt that Conan was a direct descendant of Kull but family trees would have been impossible to maintain in the wake of the cataclysm
Humanity had to survive somehow..
Maybe like a Noah story, someone found something floating and lived or some Magic protected Kull .. and somehow Conan was a great Grandson.
How else does Thulsa Doom stay after the Cataclysm @6:18? Maybe not all was was "Sunk"
Conan was a positive being, Kull was negative...Conan is not related to Kull.
"Your bride is over 3k years old!" "3k? She said she was only 19" lol :D
She’s barely immortal
"shes barely immortal" im fiucking dead.
I went to see Kull in the theater. Its an excellent movie. Kevin Sorbo did an awesome job.
Would love to travel back in time and stop Robert from taking his life. This was a travesty for him to leave this world so soon. He had a lot more stories to give. His writing is so well done as you read it you would never know it was from the late 20s.
I just wanna give a poor guy a hug and tell him want kind of inspiration for me personally comes from his writing and what kind of legacy remained
I'm thinking the same...
Howard mate...your mother inspired you to read and write and she wouldn't want you to follow her before your time.
She absolutely would have wanted him to kick on and grow as a writer and human being but he put all his eggs in one basket...such a massive loss to this genius young man.
I used to love Conan,Kull and Red Sonja comics as a kid. A lot of Howard's tales got re used as Conan tales in Roy Thomas's epic run.
I did see the Kull movie at the time. Always liked Kevin.
It would have been a really cool bit of world building if Kull had actually used Conan's iconic atlantean sword.
I've seen parts of this movie. And I think Kevin Sorbo did well. Also it's a shame it's underrated.
Oh, I own this one.
Watch it about once a year or so, with the Conans, Red Sonja -- Sword and the Sorcerer.
Usually around winter 😉🤘
@@richardrobbin2225---enjoy
I watched it the other day. I enjoyed it
One of my favorite movie kull the conquer, I used to watch it all the time when i was a kid, I like those ancient times movies like xenia warrior princess and Hercules.
Kull lived many years before Conan in storyline. Your comment about them being Kings made it sound like it was at same time but it was ages apart.
It's a shame they don't make movies like these anymore.
Agreed. I was watching Warlock the other night and said the same thing
They won't. Hollywood doesn't like strong straight white male characters as the heroic lead anymore.
@@billcox8870 ,Sad but true .Hollywood is going bankrupt with their woke path they're on.
Yeah. The woke has set in like the rot it is. It's terminal, unfortunately. Now all we'll get is Ra Ra girl power, Mary Sue, feminism BS.
@Dan Alexandru Iacobescu you will get no arguments from me on that.
I remember watching this movie along with everything from Conan. They actually incorporated parts of the Kull setting and characters into the Conan the Adventurer animated series: the capture by pirates, fighting against serpent men, and some of his companions all bear a striking resemblance to Kull.
Why have I never heard of this movie? I love Howard's original Conan stories, his writing is timeless. I need to find some Kull stories to read now.
This movie is great. I envy you for being able to see it with virgin eyes 👀 🙃
@@bleachedout805 Virgin eyes? Why does that make me giggle.
In my opinion his Kull stories are superior, and represent his absolute finest writing. Be sure to read "The Shadow Kingdom" - considered by many, including myself, to be the greatest sword and sorcery story ever written. Also "By This Axe I Rule" is phenomenal, and in my opinion is the single most badass title to a story I've ever seen.
I always figured it was Kull sword that Conan found
Howard made two mythic end stories for Kull : One time travel where he has gone to the future and returned, and when he has chased a guy to the end of the world beyond the styx river where an old ferryman paid 1 gold piece told to his group he has never seen somebodies come back.
Howard was a true inspiration as a writer, and his life ended so young and so tragically
Saw this and 13th Warrior in the same week. I loved them both!
13th Warrior is amazing.
It's also interesting to note that Red Sonja is a character created by Robert e Howard but he set her in the 16th century it was Marvel comics that put her in the Hyborian age as a female match to Conan to attract a female audience
I'm sure she brought in only more males, ironically enough.

Great content as always 👍👍
Great video. - I think Robert E. Howard created Shuma-Gorath also.
And Soloman Kane
The KULL movie looked like a TV production and never had the mystique of the CONAN movies. That's unfortunate because the KULL stories read like a precursor to CONAN. R.E.Howard set up the Hyborian age to define the world that his stories took place in. It's such a shame that Howard committed suicide. As an extremely talented writer he probably was just hitting his creative stride and could have produced many more vivid characters ! H.P. Lovecraft was a penpal of Howard's. Something that is seldom mentioned. Many of the dark stories that Howard wrote feature "gods" of forgotten races. Evil that had lain dormant in the earth. I'm sure Lovecraft was drawn Howard's imagination, since it overlapped with his own.
Got most of Howard's work (including the lovely Conan collection centenary edition) but the book of his i reread the most is Almuric, though i suppose nowadays its "troublesome" in its content.
Still one of his best though.
Read al of his work myself , though I can't remember them all
I remember watching this movie. I enjoyed it as a kid. One of the reasons is because I used to watched Hercules the Legendary Journey and since Kevin Sorbo was in it, so I thought it would be good.
Gotta love Robert E. Howard. Great vid.
I always thought the Atlantean tomb Conan found in 1982's movie was Kull's. Probably not. But I can dream.
It would be interesting for some one like Amazon to pick up the rights to Kull and Conan and do 2 series based on the characters, Kull first then Conan afterwards. Linking the two to that same tomb that conan got his sword from. Idf done right you'd have a money maker that would span a decade or more considering the source material you could put together for both eras.
I have become very skeptical about anything Amazon does. If they pick up Kull, he will be a dumb barbarian, easily outsmarted by the ancient queen and he will end up passing the throne to Zoreda.
I loved all these movies, and the conan books! My fantasy minded mind fantasized being a warrior, princess, or both as sat at school daydreaming at clouds, looking out the window. Lol.
Kevin Sorbo at his best.
Clearly a Sword and Sorcery movie worthy of its name!
The dead Atlantian king, I'm not sure it may have been Kull - It iS possible but may have just as well been a late Atlantian king before the wars that brought the Atlantians into savagery.
Kull was after all never a king of Atlantis or even Atlantians but of Valusia though the crypt may have been buried due to the cataclysm, otherwise it should have been more grande looking...
Speculations a dn theories aside I think at least spiritually that the Atlantian King in the crypt could have been Kull as it would have been a great symbolism.
While the lore does not say it outright there are strong hints that Kull is in fact the ancestor of Conan as the Atlantians are the ancestors of the Cimerians (Who in turn are the encestors of the Celts of Britain such as the Irish and the Welsh/Cimri).
I would love to see KULL vs BEASTMASTER & then the winner would face off against the winner of CONAN vs HE-MAN. The finale would have the 4 heroes joining forces
I don't get why you're invoking He-Man, here.
Kull and Conan are both very much swords-and-sorcery/horror fantasy, where He-Man is very much... Not that.
He man would ruin them all.
@@aaronforsythe8556 He would, though.
Conan and Kull are just really cool, really strong people. He-Man is a magical warrior with immense power.

A guilty pleasure absolutely cool film!!!!!!😎👍
Juba was actually played by Scottish Actor Douglas Henshall though, he was also the star of the UK Sci-Fi series; “Primeval”.
No, Marvelous was talking about Juba but showed a clip of Ducalon. Ducalon was the previous heir apparent and conspired with the wizard Enaros to overthrow Kull. Juba was Kull's old pirate associate who drugs and captures Kull, Ascalante, and Zareta.

Sorry, i was going by the picture and what he said at the time, my mistake.
Kull was the Conan prototype.
Excellent and well timed video
I hope Hercules the legendary Journey will be shown again on TV and is available in my country
When you realize kull and Hercules are the same lol
The dead Atlantean king that Conan found might be Kull. Although if he is I think he would have an axe rather than a sword.
The axe was used to seal the cursed room in the book
I remember seeing this movie but forgot everything except the fire and ice motif.
It would have been a nice easter egg if the crown in Kull had been at least similar to the one of the Atlantean skeleton
Also, if I recall correctly, the narrator in either Conan or Kull (my apology for not remembering which...) mentionned that humanity had the time to devolve back into "great apes" for than evolving back into human between Acheron and the Thorian Age... over the course of something like 9000 years.
Many human tribes, as well as ancient civilizations before them, were described as devolving into mere beasts as they fell from grace. It was a common theme in both Howard's and Lovecraft's works. I don't remember the species as a whole devolving though.
I always thought that Kull was a successor to Conan. Always liking Kull more but damn it's the opposite. Funny how my young me found liking to Kull as if somehow knowing or feeling he was the first. Speaking as someone born 97 and being raised on Kevin Sorbo's roles - y'know Hercules, Kull, Andromeda. Intereting vid. Absolutely love it. I used to watch that ol' movie so much that kazete got srsly corrupted and only two scenes remained after a while - kissing the demon and him jumpign from fire with an axe (onto a boat or sea?).
Sigh, ah man the good time. Wish kids these days could relive the glory, but everything is too sensitive nowadays so any chance of remake is near zilch.
They are trying to bury Sorbos legacy cuz of politics because he is openly Conservative
@@KanishQQuotes Damn what a pitty. He's one of my childhood legends alongside Stallone and Schwarzenegger. Like how can they hate Sorbo, just look at him. He eminates a heart of gold AND even made movie series with Mathew Mercer! Like what'S to hate? Polotical ideas? Fuck that, who cares.

I think the writers of Kull (the film) missed a great opportunity to tie the worlds together. If it were me I'd have written Kull as a prequel to Conan, and have given Kull Conan's sword near the ending of the film
I loved Kull the Conqueror. I thought it was a great movie. They need to make another Kull movie
I watched this in theaters back when it came out, had it been a little more grittier and a proper music score it may have been that much better but it was the 90s
If it hasn’t been mentioned in the comments yet. Thusla Doom is actually a Kull villain and Akivasha is Conan’s. The films switch them, which i find fascinating
The funny thing is that if you look at the time lines according to the Elephant Man, Kull could be an Ancestor to those of Cimmeria.
The Directors Cut was a Masterpiece

Aka Kall the Conquer in Finland. For reasons only Finland knows. Also was originally written as sequel to Conan The Destroyer.
I,m fan of Conan and i believe that some how the sword Conan get is from king kull! So i agree but you know is just a mith or legend so have a good one!
Not a great movie, but a highly entertaining and enjoyable movie indeed! 😁👍🏾👌🏾
I think Conan is more popular than Kull mainly for the reason that Kull was (or at least increasingly become) a brooding, philosophising character embossed with seriousness.
Conan stayed pretty simple and take leave from his responsibilities as king from time to time, so he could still have adventures without the faith of nations and worlds on the balance.
In short, Conan stayed ever what made both Kull and Conan popular, while Kull become a philosopher ruler few could or would identify with.
I always thought that the crypt where Conan got the Atlantis sword is may be the crypt of kull
Mostly why I never watched the movie is I thought of kull movie before it

I wish I had some real life counter parts for the inspiration of these stories. Like what time period and what part of the earth is this supposed to be
The story takes place in a fictionalized idea of the 'old world', europe, asia, and africa. Its fictionalized structure is a cross of multiple eras in history, combining elements from the persian, roman, greek, and egyptian empires and ancient chinese dynasties along with tribal traditions of gauls, nords, etc.
Howard took his inspiration from real world heroes and biblical or other religious figures. A pretty similar real world character would be William Wallace acting in rebellion against the rule of Britan to free the Irish serfs.
I find kull interesting of Robert E Howard's character It's shame Howard took his own life back down we'll never know the half of the story of kull how his story ends
Kull
I clicked the video thinking of Krull.
Conan is related to Kull
See! Now I have to watch Conan again. I always thought that tomb was from his family, but since he was a slave he hadn't been home in years. I thought the sword was his family's and they hid it from the bad guys??🤔😀😂
The scene your talking about isn't in the book form. It's a screenwriter s version. I do remember him being captured with others and escaping, but not powering some mill for years to adulthood.
The first movie didnt follow book form in origin. If it's made , do it right, no wokeism. Know that it was written in another age. Just like Tarzan was.
How the mighty (Kevin Sorbo) have fallen 😔
Probably got pushed into obscurity by Kevin finding religion.
Robert E. Howard shot himself after his mom wasn't going to wake froma coma. He and HP Lovecraft knew one another and the Conan Universe was considered to be Cthulu in nature.
