I'm 36 and this show is new to me. Are they always so condescending about people over the age of 30? I grew up with IRC, web based chat rooms and the birth of AIM and Myspace and they talk like I don't "get" Tiktok. Maybe I don't *want* Tiktok because it's aimed at kids. I jumped off FB when they let my parents on there. Platforms aren't just based on age, but the audience. And these two seem to shit all over anyone my age for no apparent reason.

I was the "social media manager" (among about 30 other titles) for my last job, and I loved it because I just wrote horrible dad jokes all day related to our specialty (podiatry). They only had a Facebook so it wasn't as though we were reaching a huge audience of new customers, but it was a nice way to break up the workday.
Then one day my office manager saw me on the page typing up a new post and reamed me out for using social media on company time...when that was literally part of my job and I was on the company Facebook page??? She and the owner of the practice then called me in for a meeting asking me to limit social media to non-work hours, including posting for our office page. If that hadn't sucked the joy out of it for me, I probably would've done just that because I didn't think about the fact they were essentially telling me to work off-hours and unpaid. *So* glad I don't work there anymore.

I’m actually very proud of gen Z and other users from other generations banding together to tell brands in one deafening voice that we do NOT give a shit if they are not genuinely trying to do things to help the environment and communities. Insincerity used to be so much harder to sniff out before social media because even if a company was doing bad things they had ways of limiting who heard that information and lessening it’s impact. That’s largely gone now, and any paper trails, harmful bill lobbying, and hypocritical business practices can get sniffed out and exposed and amplified in SECONDS. You can say you are “committed to helping solve climate change” but no one is gonna believe that when they see your name on a list of lobbyists to shoot down a more restrictive bill on carbon emissions. You’re protecting your bottom line before anything ethical you SHOULD be doing and WE SEE YOU.
So, I’m actually quite glad that people have given such an aggressive pushback to brands whose “woke” platitudes are completely fake and thinly veiled. I hope that we see more of that and that brands have to actually care and want to enact real tangible change before consumers will buy anything from them.

I deleted Instagram, snapchat, FB, and everything else except Twitter for news and current events and TikTok for comedy. It's all about how you use social media, you don't even have to post. this episode just reminded me that my Ugandan friend once ran the social media for a company that sells "traditional African pieces" that celebrate the "cultures and crafts" of Africa (notice how I keep saying Africa like its a country and not a whole ass continent, because that's the way the company talked and presented itself). She needed the money so she took the job quick, and immediately started being dictated to by the owner (who only ever messaged her) to phrase the social posts in these weird ways - skirting around fetishising and infantilising the communities and cultures who produced these goods. So my friend does some digging and finds out the person who owns the company is, shocker, a rich white woman who treated this as her charity project 🙃🙃🙃. My friend left as soon as she could but damn.

The first was dissing us for our college basketball team not winning titles and saying they would never build a station in our town, the second was on Valentine's day they tagged the town in their valentines card, and the most recent was playing an april fool's joke about putting a station in our town. Boom, you guys nailed it.
Commitment. It’s 100% about a brand taking hard stances, whatever they may be, that will attract loyal customers.
Everyone is SO UNBELIEVABLY OVER this whole attitude of “we want to be liked by everyone all the time, so…..yes…we agree with that thing you said, unless it’s not profitable in which case, no we don’t.”
This whole fear of losing “potential customers” by being lukewarm will lose you WAY more overall. No one likes a sycophant that just wants to please everyone and say all the buzzwords to get all the brownie points. It’s so disingenuous, and no one is fooled. You want to do something to help your brand? Take FIRM STANCES on things. Commit. Accept the potential losses of SOME of your customer base if you say certain things because it will attract INFINITELY more actual loyal customers who respect you for drawing a line in the sand on whatever issue.

I agree, if they want peopel to listen they have to incorporate it into the video, not just a seperate ad read. especially like they did in this video with literally no background and a straight read, no one is interested in seeing that. I was surprised in an episode literally about brands, they did such a bad job at ads. Though that may be the fault of the company demanding things, but still.

Brands will never actually be ethical because it goes against their reason for existing - turning a profit. Appeasing Gen Z on Twitter is just good business. If they were truly ethical most would simply go out of business.

The issue of higher ups holding everything back and only making everything worse is so real. At my former unnamed employer, we helped make a lot of print marketing stuff. One time the local Proud Boys wanted to print materials with us and the department supervisor refused to do it. Until word got to our district manager, who said we had to do the job because "there isn't enough evidence of the Proud Boys being a hate group".
This was in, like, 2020. Like, *months* after George Floyd. The thing is, I'm confident that district manager wasn't a white supremacist (not overtly, anyway) or even a sympathizer, I just don't think he was connected or in touch enough to know the actual reputation of the group he was greenlighting us to work with.

I'm 33 and have not made a Tiktok account because when it first came out it was marketed towards teens and tweens. And then the 20 somethings started using it for dances, challenges and memes. It's still evolving though. I've noticed that more and more people are using it for less trendy/funny stuff like education, art, news and social issues. Maybe one day I'll get on and share oil painting tips like Bob Ross.

Sarah is known for her observations in the service industry, writing for brands ig, and most recently Zillow gone wild.)

Whenever a brand acts like they’re “woke”, while having a culture of abuse and mistreatment within their spaces, I always wonder whether marketing teams are aware of it and knowingly post hypocritical statements. Or if sometimes the people in charge of their social media accounts really are detached from title. Bc Sometimes the hypocrisy is genuinely insane.

This is definetely my favorite episode so far, I love the inside take you both have about how out of touch and how much they milk real problems in ways that are just so unempathetic and they need to really get a grip on how to bring attention to real problems without playing friends to everyone. They seriously need to introduce some kind of training into handing responsibility to younger people because it is our world now, like yes the internet is stupid and unreal but there is a responsibility to drop the pretext or the brand and actively be socially aware and help the people. Brands and corporations should always be for the people, they've been so actively selfish for way too fucking long

Just a reference to the daisy chain term, that is also a well known term for a chain of locks interconnected. The method is used when multiple entities have/need access to a private area. Let's say there is a big gate and a chain to close it for the most part, then you will lock multiple padlocks together to close the chain/gate. But the locks are assembled in a "daisy chain" so that if anyone needs into the area, they just have to unlock their one lock to open the chain/gate. I work in environmental sampling, so I've seen many protected and restricted areas that multiple companies and municipalities have access too, but no public plebs allowed.

When I see an ad, the first thought that pops up in my mind is that ads are f*cking annoying and the more I see them the more I hate them. I sometimes deliberately not buy something, even though I could technically use it, if I have seen to many ads for it.
